Winter Photography Roadtrip In My 4x4 Van | Torridon

- With a forecast for some extreme winter conditions, I packed up my 4x4 camper van, grabbed my Nikon Z7 II and headed to the far north of Scotland to indulge in some winter landscape photography. This is exactly why I purchased and built my Mitsubishi Delica camper van. In this finale, I drive south to Torridon and struggle with heavy snow.

I loves this channel. Came for the van build but stayed for the photo art and talk.
The best was the bird! 🐤😂
Poor little Robin. He was starving due to the harsh conditions. They are one of the few birds almost tame enough to approach us in the hope of some food. A gentle reminder to all to leave out food and water for the birds when it freezes.
It's funny how we don't really think about all the b-roll of for ex the van driving. You'd have to drive to a place, stop and set up the camera, think about not trying to make foot steps etc in the snow, turn the camera on, back up the car and drive past the camera, back up and get the camera again and continue. Like, the extra time and effort for just some nice context. I really appreciate the work you put in here to tell your story
I have so enjoyed this road trip with you Tom , it makes an old man like me so happy , a whole week I have waited for this 3rd episode , and you again did not disappoint 😊
Hi Phil, hope you are keeping well. I have a cottage booked near this loch in March, you're more than welcome to stay a night or two with us if you wish.
@@simongreer5100Hi Simon , I will send you a P.M. through my wife's Facebook
Great to hear! I would love to do more roadtrips. Sweden was fun, this Scotland trip was just what I needed. Where next?
@@ThomasHeatonPhoto Essex..
@@ThomasHeatonPhoto What about mid-south Wales? Looked over compared with Snowdonia but so scenic, so varied and so photogenic. Say from Abergavenny anywhere up via Camarthanshire to the coast at Cymtdyu, Newquay and Aberaeon up towards the Eden Valley just east of Aberystwyth. Mountains, forests, waterfalls, river lined valleys, beautiful bays and pretty coastal towns. It’s sublime.
I have really enjoyed these videos, the images were great, I especially loved the shapes in the ice, and I have to say that Robin image was so cute.
Excellent content! Production was superb! Thanks for taking me along!
I can’t wait to live where there is winter again. All wonderful compositions, but the robin won the trophy!
Indeed, what a morning for you. The snaps are ethereal.
Those melted circles are caused by warm water from fish pee 🤔😂😂. The Robin on the microphone speaks volumes for a landscape photographer, love it 😍👍
I have to write another comment to add more. The time and effort you put into these videos, the walking for context and the storytelling, the spectacular drone scenes, all these little bits we get to enjoy from the comfort of our chairs and sofas (or wherever everyone else is watching this) take so time and effort, and in those temperatures and conditions you were in, it's no joke. And yet, it adds so much and is very much appreciated. You do take us with you even if just for a little window of time but one that is wonderful.
Thank you!
PS: I was waiting for the candid snap of the robin at the end :) (I wonder how long you considered putting it on for)
Thanks, Shyir. I appreciate the lengthy and thoughtful comment. It makes a refreshing change.
@@ThomasHeatonPhoto no, no, no, Thank You :D
My simplest but most sincere congratulations on these 3 videos !
Love the inspiration !!!
those 3 mountains are the best photo of whole trip for me
Brilliant! I’ll keep watching! Enjoy the kebabs.
The opening scene not showing any footsteps to/back from the camera.. that just shows how much effort goes into making these videos. Let alone everything else we see 🙇♂👌
Well, you must be chuffed you decided to make that trip. Some of you best artwork and as always a brilliantly told story to take us along with you
Magical shots, Thomas and very good advice to all of us.
What a wonderful mini-series! Thank you!
It’s my benchmark of a good trip, that reluctance to accept that it is time for it to end.
Hey Thomas, just wanted to say that you're a huge inspiration for me. And your videos are the reason I got RUclips prime. I couldn't handle the ads getting in the way anymore
Thanks for taking us along.
Thanks for sharing your photographic journey again. I hope I can visit Scotland in the future and just observe the beauty before making any photos.
the Robin image is my favorite of the entire series. I always feel that good composition, light, execution, and editing will only get you so far. The best images must touch the viewer in some emotional way. As a photographer, the Robin on a camera with the photographer on screen is something I can relate to and feel excited about. Thanks for including that.
Appreciate your extra step in storytelling production values. Always enjoyable. Carry on! 👍🥂
Thank you for taking us on the journey with you. I loved every moment. Especially the robin.
Your talents are a treat ! Your enthusiasm an inspiration !
A beautiful part of Scotland. It's been many years since I was up there. Spent many a day driving up from Helensburgh to Kyle of Lochalsh to work up in the Western Highlands, occasionally in weather conditions that you had on this trip. Used to get the opportunity on weekends when I was up there to go up to the lochs around Torridon - some of the most spectacular landscapes in the UK, IMHO. All back in the 80s, so all my images are on B&W and transparency film.
I've been watching your videos for several years. I continue to return because I enjoy your content, particularly these road trips. I am in the U.S. and quite enjoy these windows into the beautiful landscapes of the U.K. Thanks for the weekly escape, education, and enjoyment!
Amazing work you've put together here Thomas. So much work must go into all the B roll, music selection, etc but you've produced a VERY worthy result. This would have taken the BBC a team of 50 folks to do!
Just incredible. Thoroughly enjoyed this. Thank you 😍
Love the robin on the microphone, how wonderful! Another super vlog of your brilliant adventures 👍🏻😃
Thank you for this series from another wonderful trip into nature - my enjoyment of your videos has never waned because I always feel as if you've brought me along for the ride and I'm there with you. Some really nice images from this trip too - the panorama of the mountain and the minimalist one with the broken reeds are probably my favourites.
As for the robin... well, they're famously bold little birds, and one of them once came and sat on the wing mirror of my car while I was sitting in it with the window down. It stayed for a good 30 seconds, and I got a photo - not as good as yours, I'm afraid!
Three words!! Amazing, epic, incredible!!!!
We have been watching your videos for al long time already in the Netherlands and for us you are the very best! Beautiful photo's with feeling in it, excellent filming and presenting, supergaaf! Thank you for letting us enjoy your trips with you 😀
Yes, I really enjoyed your roadtrip videos, thank you so much. Scotland never failed to impress me, it's such a beautiful country. Before I went there I supposed, the country must photograph itself, so that I wouldn't have to work too hard to get a load of great images. What a mistake! Having tried it myself, I can fully appreciate the excellent images you took.
By the way, I always thought that photographers take pictures and videos all over the world except from Ireland. So I think you can take some exclusive images there, because hardly anybody else does it.
This has been a great series, with some beautiful images, but oh boy - that shot of the robin on your camera microphone, with you shown taking the image on the screen, and the landscape around, is an absolute winner! I can see it as a competition winner or magazine double page spread. It is just wonderful. I could happily look at that for a month in a calendar.
We did a mini road trip around Scotland in March/April of 22 started in Kylesku and headed down the west coast to Torridon. I love Scotland, it’s beautiful.
Great video.
Such a wonderful video and an end to a 3 part segment, I have certainly enjoyed it and it has given me time to think. Here it is currently summer in Australia where I am so the landscape is very dry and hot, though I'm getting out on an adventure in the near future. I'd be lying if right now I wasn't getting down with my photography but I know in the cooler months I will be back out enjoying it.
Keep up the great content and I look forward to receiving you Vol.2 book at some point once it arrives :)
Wow, what a way to end the road trip!! Wonderful video and wonderful photos!!
Branching out into bird photography. . . love it!
Really enjoyed this little trip tom! I think some of those photos were stunning! I also loved the little robin pic.
All the best!
Dan
I agree with the last two contributors. You're work is worth the wait! Time and time again. Keep on the good work. I hope to -one day- make 1 photo that can compete with one of yours.
I liked the Robin shot the best, many Thanks Thomas.
I love these mini adventures❤
I know you asked us whether you should do a bunch of short, or a series. I’m so glad you did the series!
Thanks for sharing your road trip with us. I loved your commentary at the end. It’s more about the journey and what we learn along the way.
You never fail to deliver Thomas, and the Robin finished it off, Great work as alway's and thanks for sharing.
Lovely series. Thank you, Thomas.
I just appreciate the effort to make these videos. Since starting RUclips myself I can see the amount of takes and camera positions you do just for a few seconds footage. Although a photographer you’re videos are awesome. Thank you
It's Wednesday - it's 6pm - it's Heaton time 🙂
You mentioned Michael Kenna. Oh yeah! A compositional hero of mine for sure! :)
Really enjoyed watching this road trip to Scotland, the snow up there provides some fantastic scenes. Loved the images as always 👌
Great series Tom, lovely shots too!
Great video & images you captured in Scotland. I had an opportunity last week to read your vol 2 book - it was excellent. Hope you had a safe journey home and looking forward to your next adventure. 👍
Fabulous as always buddy - thoroughly enjoyed your roadtrip and some stunning images... keep up the great work!
Brilliant series Thomas, really enjoyed this one
Thoma, thank you for taking us with you. Very much enjoyed the video and fotos, All the best, Hans
I'm honestly impressed you took the time to do that awesome drone shot. I can imagine it would have felt a lot easier to just leave the drone in the bag and not deal with the fuss and bother of setting it up and hoping it doesn't get ruined in the snow. Not to mention all the work of setting up the external camera every time we see you driving the van from the outside. What a pain! But I definitely appreciated it so it was probably worth it :D
At this point before Thomas points out the subject, I can tell slightly in advance what’s the subject in the videos. Thanks for putting this capability in me man. I can capture calm a little bit more in my photos too.
So jealous. I just spent a week in glencoe after being inspired by your old video shooting Etive Mor from Beinn a'Chrulaist. I figured late January was a sure thing for snowy scenes.
I drove up from Southampton - 10 hours on the road, only to arrive for a week of strong winds and heavy rain!
The photos I hoped for obviously didn't happen, but it was still an incredible experience and got to test out the weather sealed gear!
Everyone we met was super friendly and funny, even on the roads everyone is more considerate. I have well and truly fallen in love with Scotland. It's a stunningly beautiful place and I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't yet been.
Loved them frozen loch shots fella! Stunning landscape
Yoohoo excited to watch this! Enjoyed this little series a lot! 👍
Making a video like this is a lot of hard work and takes massive dedication in that cold weather. Thanks for the beautiful photography, and this great presentation! Subscribed !
What a great journey. And what a pano you get from it. It's just epic. What a shot.
If that would be mine pano - I would print it and put it on my livingroom's wall.
Hope to see it in your portfolio in the near future.
Loved this series! Beautiful photos and videos. Got an email that book vol 2 is on its way. Look forward to reading it and seeing your photos in print! Cheers!
This has to be your best video yet. It summarizes everything you do to both get the shots and how you think about most of your compositions. If I were trying to share your work with others, this would be the first video I'd show them.
"Bring me a shrubbery!" What a fantastic area. And the photography is pretty good too.
"A pastime full of hope and disappointment"... I can't disagree with that!
Absolutely loved this little series Thomas. Thank you for the insight and inspiration 👍
P.S. Book (Vol; 2) arrived and I have to say just how superb it is. The temptation to binge my way from cover to cover is so tempting but I'm pacing myself. Its my morning ritual to savour a page or two with my coffee.
Thanks again, Garry.
I enjoy your videos .. they are one of the best landscape vlogs in RUclips
Another great video. Thanks for taking me with you. 😊👍
Epic Tom, thanks for taking us along, very enjoyable and some stunning shots along the way.
You are an inspiration Thomas. Lovely and amazing photos as always. And the lil bird visitor, who stayed for you to photograph it, just as amazing :)
Loved the video and the Robin =)
Love the circles in the ice image!
😅 love it when you said, only -1… that’s freezing 🥶 for me in Miami…
The round shapes on the iced lake are most likely from gas bubbles coming up. Cool to see you can take beautiful pictures in overcast weather as well.
These videos of yours are really pure, honest and still worth of the wait after many many years.
Thanks, Jari. It's nice to hear that you're still coming back after so long.
Beautiful images. LOVE em all.
It was wonderful to have a look over your shoulder during this roadtrip. I noticed especially, how much efford went in all this little scenes, where we see your car driving by or reaching the desired spot.
Fantastic videos! Thank you
Epic again, Tom. What a brilliant trio of films!
thanks for taking me along, really enjoyed it, keep trucking
Thank you, Thomas!
I am happy to watch your videos and get inspired. I love taking pictures in the snow.
I wanted to buy something from you, but unfortunately your mail does not send to Russia.
Fantastic images, Thomas, have loved your Scotland videos and the robin on your microphone was a wonderful way to ‘sign off’.
That was a fantastic road trip - I could enjoy all the delights without having to freeze my butt off! What a treat. Also really thankful to hear of the importance of doing the mundane of life, and time with family - that can never be underestimated! Love how you remind us of the ebbs and flows in photography - I think it sits in much of life across multiple spaces.
A wonderful series of videos with some superb imagery
I really enjoyed this trip, great images. I watch your channel since years and the overall quality became so good. Thank you for taking us with you
My favourite is the Robin on the microphone 😍
Hey Thomas - some epic shots - got to say during this 3 day trip you have posted some of the best images I have seen anywhere in a long time - well done..👍
Coulin estate is my fav place on earth. Love it.
A very nice collection of photos but the reflected reeds is by far my favorite as it resembles a Japanese motif on rice paper, a very minimalistic and effective image.
Loved this mini series. Beautiful photos. The pano of the mountains was stunning
Amazing images and great commentary...well done Thomas.
Love the winter landscapes❄️🇳🇿
Really loved these few videos from what is, in my opinion, the best part of the world (I know, I’m biased! 😊). I particularly loved that pano in the first video, the finest image I’ve seen of that mountain, stunning! Typically, i’d just started a new job the week that these conditions came so didn’t manage to get out myself to photograph them, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed for more snow this year! 🤞 S
I'm from Indonesia, thank you for the tips and experiences that are always shared, always successful 📸📸📸📸📸
Thanks Tom another brilliant adventure, thanks for sharing
What a great insight into the life of a photographer - I've really enjoyed this series and I'm off to watch a few more of your videos - thanks
Really enjoyed your latest road trip. Thanks for allowing us to come along.
Loved these 3 videos so so much beautiful and the Robin super,, brilliant
