      Thanks Julian. I've always found that each genre can help each other in many ways (composition and light being universal etc)...my 70-200mm f/2.8 often goes in the bag as well as the 500mm and a 24-70mm ! Keeps me honest! Hope your chat at The Photography Show went well for you btw

    These films are lovely- so tastefully made; very thorough, too. Inspiring stuff. I originally bought a longer lens as I got frustrated at not being able to reach certain subjects. A local peregrine was the catalyst. I've gradually fallen in love with the new, heavier kit, but it's been rocky at times! I've found that it's made for locations like above- the ocean, the saltmarshes etc. I feel like I'm hunting. A bit like wildfowling but without hurting anything. I recently had a good time photographing shorties- also in coastal Kent; not far from this film's location. For me, it's a very rewarding hobby and I get the odd good shot. I've picked up some great lessons watching these, so thank you Nigel Morley!

      Thanks for watching and commenting Gareth..yup I know all about heavy kit ! Peregrines and SEO's are great subjects to watch even without taking images ! Good luck with getting the shots you want.

      Thanks very much Rob. Good luck with with your photography. Main tip I can give is that fieldcraft is a huge part of any success and once you get to know any particular species's habits it makes things easier. Local parks and the coast for things like ducks and seagulls are great place to practice as well. I've been in Scotland doing some landscape stuff but I'm in the process of putting together a Barn Owl video and I talk a bit about about settings for focusing and exposure in that.

Unfortunately such a persecuted bird along with the harriers.
    Great work and will follow with interest. Cheers

      Many thanks for watching...the problem with RUclips wildlife videos is the editing makes it look relatively straightforward but it never is !! Landscapes are far easier !! I guess I only have a "good" day about 1 in 4 trips but every trip teaches you something and leads to better photos or experiences (nb a "good" day doesn't always mean good photos but just a good experience)

    • @gadgetgazphoto
      @gadgetgazphoto 5 лет назад

      Nigel Morley thanks for the reply :) ..absolutely, I’m happy if I spend all day and get just one decent shot, it’s still a great day with nature if I don’t get any ;) and always enjoy it, all the best and hope to see and look forward to more from you in future.

    I loved watching this, thank you! I had my first SEO encounter 2 winters ago here in west Dorset. Hadn't gone out looking for it, I was just driving home from my dog walk, but there it was and I got some quite nice shots and video (for an amateur!) At one point it flew across the lane I was driving on - right in front of me. (No pics, obviously, but it is imprinted in my mind!)

      Thanks Kevin. Yes, my few local ones seem long gone now but it does seem to have been a good year. I've always assumed it is based on their food supply levels back in north Europe rather than low temperatures as the weather there hasn't been too bad this year but whatever the reason I always look forward to the first autumn sightings ! Thanks for watching

    Hi Nigel, really enjoyed the ,warts and all video. Your one hour from home series starts from where in Kent. Know you can't give exact locations but we live near Tenterden and would like to know rough areas to travel to.

    • @nigelmorley8092
      @nigelmorley8092  5 лет назад

      Hi Vanessa..thanks for commenting and yes I wanted to make it "real" as wildlife photography is so much about patience and fieldcraft . I'm only 25 mins from Tenterden so (with a small amount of leeway) and so I'd suggest places like Sandwich Bird Reserve, Elmley reserve, Stodmarsh reserve etc are all great places if you're thinking of heading out but the best way is to get to know local fields and woodlands really well by walking there regularly especially now in Spring and if you can at dawn and dusk...all my best images come from areas i visited many times...good luck with it though

    Question. I am in the very fortunate position of being able to choose between a 500 or 600mm. I've managed to assemble the rest of the kit I believe I require. However i'm stuck on this any help would be much appreciated.

    • @nigelmorley8092
      @nigelmorley8092  4 года назад +1

      Hello Mark..its a question many wildlife photographers have to consider and unless you are doing almost entirely small bird work and/or in hides/set up situations, I'd go for the 500mm....usually much more portable, just about hand holdable for certain lengths of time and usually a fair bit cheaper. Also more airline friendly size wise and fits in a lot more camera bags. Usually people say "but I'll get that bit more reach with a 600mm" but trust me, when 500mm is not enough, neither will 600mm..loads of situations when you don't have enough reach. Far better to really learn/practice good fieldcraft to be nearer your subject. What I would say is some of the new fresnel PF lenses are amazingly lightweight now, like the Nikon 500mm f5.6 PF and although losing one f-stop is a slight pain the portability is a huge bonus (and they are cheaper.). Hope that helps a bit

    • @tarjei99
      @tarjei99 4 года назад

      Check the length. For Canon, the lenghts are pretty close.
      The subject is twice as big on the sensor with a 600mm than a 400mm.
      If you are going on safaris, check someone's experience with the new lenses.

    Great video Nigel, love the video of the owl on the post and the still shots. A few short eared owl shots on my Instagram, very high iso on some as it was almost dark, look forward to the next one, off to Mull myself at the end of the month weather permitting - instagram.com/davebennettnaturephotography/

    • @nigelmorley8092
      @nigelmorley8092  5 лет назад

      Thanks David. As you say the toughest part in the UK is so often high ISO especially for Owls at dawn/dusk. I get a lot more days with horrid rather than good light !!

    Hi Nigel...which Gitzo model are you using in this video? Thank you.

    • @nigelmorley8092
      @nigelmorley8092  3 года назад +1

      its a 3542 model I think...the 3 series are a good compromise of very steady but not too heavy (the 5 series are brilliant but quite a bit heavier so too much for field work in the scottish mountains etc)

    You need to control the volume a little better, made it difficult to watch on TV without disturbing others. Or not hearing part.

    • @nigelmorley8092
      @nigelmorley8092  5 лет назад

      Interesting ..thank you..I did various playbacks before finishing and watched the levels when editing so I'll have a look...suspect it may be when background music balancing with the real time background noise (birds singing etc) ..all the voice parts were very similar levels in edit

    • @mariacyou9265
      @mariacyou9265 5 лет назад

      Maybe this is audio ducking problem.
      I think, in part from 9:28 till 9:56 of your video you have assigned dialogue as a music SFX. When I have CC-subtitles on it shows 'music' not caption for the dialogue . In other parts of your video the sound is perfect. Filming and editing a video is a time-consuming task. Thank you Nigel for taking your time to share your knowledge and passion.
