Thanks for sharing your settings and gear - it’s very helpful for those of us who aspire to improve our wildlife photography skills. Love seeing the end results too! Keep going - I look forward to seeing how your channel develops. All the best.
Nice vlog Simon! Great to see your gear and approach to photographing this amazing bird. And 5 more minutes! a great rule - easily turns into another half an hour 😅
Great video - I photographed my first barn owl this month, the first of many I hope. Keep the videos coming. PS any recommendations on gimbals and tripods for a Sony 150-600mm?
Fun video Simon. You're patience rewarded. You're right about the 7d noise issues which is currently what I have. I've recently found some software (denoise) that is quite impressive at managing it in post-processing. Look forward to your iceland vids. Keep it up.
Thanks for the comment. The original 7D wasn't the best for noise but the 7D Mark II is much better. This is where the full frame bodies come into their own but of course come with a much higher price tag. Both cameras have their pros and cons. Cheers
@@SimonWantling canon are supposedly releasing the 90d later this year that replaces both the 7d and 80d. There is also a 1dx update coming soon. Let's see what they have in store.
Thanks for another great film...you get great opportunities where you are...I'm from London and the 1st chance I got of a Barn owl was only 3 weeks ago for about 20 seconds...(posted on my channel) would love to know of a good country side location close to me...thanks for the talk through as well very informative...)
My family and I are going to be in England in February of 2020. What are the odds of seeing little owls and barn owls at that time of year? Where are the areas that you have on your videos? I photograph and watch owls in my area of Ontario, Canada and would be very interested in doing the same on our trip. You can message me if you would like to keep the area a little more private. Thanks for your very informative videos.
Wow - best video yet Simon, you are really settling in to these. Beautiful image of the owl, your passion for the birds really shines through. Get the crow as well next time eh? :-)
Hi Keith, when I was using my Canon 1DX mark II until recently I would tend to use single point with the surrounding 8 points active but now with the R5 I generally use the animal eye AF which is stunning. It's not perfect by any means but extremely good for tracking subjects like this. especially on barn owls as the contrast between the owls eye and surrounding feathers is very high.
No problem Brian. I'm very pleased you enjoyed it. Please let me know if there are any specific subjects you'd like me to cover as I'd be glad to help.
Hi Von, I always shoot in full manual. For barn owls I tend to shoot -2/3 of a stop to control the whites when the conditions where as they were in this video. I always tend to shoot negative exposure on barn owls. Thanks
Simon thanks very much I’m very new to wildlife photography I’m a Nikon user, already looking into upgrading my camera 📸 keep up the excellent work ps just watched the video when you talked about the fox cubs amazing
@@Allotmentwithpaul thank you and welcome to the world of wildlife photography. You'll get more hooked as time goes on. Very challenging but worth all the hours and hours of effort when you get the results. Good luck. 👍
Hi Simon, I use the 6 series - GT5532LS. I actually don't think they make it anymore but an awesome tripod but pricey. I'm sure they must have a latest version of it.
Thank you. Don't find you need to much camo when photographing Barn Owls. They're often too busy hunting for food to notice me if you stand still 😉 thanks again..
Thank you Ian. Glad you liked the video. Yes I agree it was one of my earlier videos so should be better in the later ones as it was a comment I had from my wife also.
great vid to watch.. love to see barnys!
Thanks very much.
That,s super loved the shot thanks :]
Thanks Peter.

Thanks Espen. Indeed it does. My wife is often sending out the search party looking for me 😉
Awesome, barn owls are my favourite to photograph, not quite with a setup like yours though!!
Thanks very much. Enjoy the barn owls.

Just getting started with bird / wildlife photography, love you videos and photos. Which Gitzo head and tripod is it that you use.

Awsome footage! Such an awesome creature to experience, especially when they hunt

Did you use any +/- exposure compensation?

Hi can I ask you approx what distance was the Barn owl away from your camera 📸 thanks very much
Thanks for the comment. I'd say about 20-30 metres away. 👍

Well done mate. Keep up the good work! I’m to much of a introvert to do it myself. 👍🏻
Thanks Ian.
Very inspirational, thank you and keep the videos coming. PS. Your camo is dreadful :)

Great video thanks, only one personal downside, I’m slightly hard of hearing and the music is a real distraction whilst you are talking.

Bro. Can you speak slowly so Indian can also understand easily 😊😊
