I'll share my experiences that will hopefully help some folks. I've sold at least 500 of these trucks at my used dealership over the past 15 years. I specialize in Tacos, 4Runners, & Tundras. Here's been typical issues for me: (1) Wheel bearings [done A LOT of them] (2) Driveshaft balancing & U-Joints [done quite a few] (3) Common issues that can be handled in one's driveway in about an hour: headlight replacement due to cracking/burning/clouding, ac resistors going bad which causes hvac to only work on high, radio volume knob malfunction; repair services available online or just swap the radio, door lock actuators going out; swap yourself with a remanned one. Other minor issues include the dead pedal breaking off, the driver seat tearing on TRD models, and oem mudflaps cracking. (4) Clearcoat failure on 8-10+ year old ones, which is to be expected with many manufactors, but the hoods and roofs of these can get REALLY bad. Not an issue on the white ones, as they have single stage paint, a few hours of compound and sealant makes '040' look brand new again; watch for paint flaking on them though. (5) Valve cover gasket leaks. Very common on the 2.7. Less common on the 4.0. (6) Rear axle [it's rare, but it's easily the most costly issue I've dealt with a few times; more common on the 4Runners & FJ Cruisers] (7) Transmission slipping on 4-cylinder automatic models [again, doesn't happen often, but sometimes folks pull more than those trucks can handle. Also, I'm not a fan of the manual transmissions in these trucks. They tend to be very noisy and have synchro issues around 100k... quite expensive to work on; especially the 6-speed. Frame rust is a Salt Belt issue that I avoid with a history report. (Check for any recalls, I know there is one on the rear leafs as well as the airbag clockspring; it's free afterall).
