I'm concerned about the new turbo charged engine. As a general rule they tend to wear out more quickly. I wish they would've given the option of a normal 6- cylinder.
The turbocharger itself is unlikely to last beyond 250k. Second and third owners should expect some expensive repairs if they want to take the odometer to the moon like you could with older Tacos.
As a general rule probably correct, but don't forget over-the-road diesels have turbocharged engines that are expected to go millions of miles, and those engines experience more combustion pressures by far than any gas engine. It's all in the engineering and there's no particular reason a turbo or a turbocharged engine can't last as long as anything else. My own intuition is that maintenance or lack thereof is a big part of their bad reputation, engineering is likely a case-specific second reason, and Scotty Kilmer is the third.
Exactly ! That’s why I bought my 23 Tacoma TRD Off Road, double cab, 6’ bed with the Premium and Technology pkgs. At my age this will be the last pickup I’ll ever buy. I only drive 6-8K miles per year and change the oil every 5K miles. I have always changed my front and rear differential, transfer case and transmission fluid every 30K miles and will continue to do so on my current TRD.

The best Tacomas were the ones made in Fremont, California, USA. In the used market, the 4.0 V6 and 2.7 4 cylinder engines are the ones to get. As a Canadian, I object to the term 'Rust Belt' when applied to vehicles. I call the northern USA and Canada the Salt Belt. My car is 19 years old and rust free because it receives quality rustproofing treatment every year. In the Salt Belt rustproofing is just mandatory preventative maintenance in the same way fluid changes are preventative maintenance . Rust = Neglect.
Thank you for sharing your love for your truck. I worked at the Fremont plant with a close knit group of people that took great pride in their work. I own a Tacoma X Runner it's mileage is 256,000 it's a 2007. We made 4 of them a day, two on day shift and two on night shift, the rest of the Tacomas on an average day numbered 900 total shifts. I purchased a 2007 TRD Sport in 2014 with 73,000 miles on it for $16,000.00. It now has 250,000 miles on it and all i did was replace the alternator, regular oil changes, tire rotations, and just changed the plugs. It's been a great truck.
I bought new a 2005 Toyota Tacoma, V6 TRD OFF ROAD Access Cab built in Fremont. Never towed with it or took it off road. It has the locking rear end and all the options. Currently it has just a little over 20k original miles. I don’t have any of the rust problems but the clear coat is starting to go. I was thinking about selling it but maybe I should just get it painted.
I purposefully bought my 23 TRD Off Road, double cab, 6’ bed with the premium and technology pkgs because historically a Turbo engine doesn’t last as long as a naturally aspirated engine. I change the oil every 5K miles and the front and rear differential, transfer case and transmission fluid every 30K miles. I’m an absolute maintenance nut, only because great maintenance is far cheaper than expensive breakdowns or buying a new vehicle. I drove my first Toyota for 24 years and when it died in 02 it had 488K miles. I promptly replaced it with a new Camry and drove it until my needs changed in 11 so I bought a new Rav 4WD Limited with the 3.5L V6. I then decided to buy my 23 Tacoma and sold my Rav to a friend because he knew how well I maintain my vehicles.
I think it's worth mentioning, but the 3rd gen tacomas have been seen with quite high mileage already. If you look around, you will find them with 300 to 500k miles already. And almost all of the ones I've seen. Have been the 2gr fks 3.5 v6. The car care nut. Even said in one of his videos on the 3rd generation tacoma. That he believes the 2gr fks is just as reliable as it's predecessor the 1gr found on the 2nd gen tacoma and previous generation 4runners. They do develop a timing cover seep. And possibly a bypass coolant leak. However these issues seem to be more of a problem with the earlier year models.

Has developed a noise when I apply brakes in the front think it might be the pads . Other than that no issues at all . I have seem some dealers on You tube with Tundras and Tacomas as far as the eye can see and offering $6000 to $8000 off MSRP trying to move them . The new ones quality is not what is use to be.

If the 2.7L would have produced 200-225 horsepower, I would have bought it instead of the 3.5L V6. Those 4 bangers are bulletproof. On another note, if you have a 4WD Toyota, engage the 4WD system at least once a month year round. Just put it into 4WD below 60 mph on a flat road, drive it about a mile and put it back into 2WD and your 4WD system will give you many years of trouble free service.
All Tacomas stemming from 95.5 to 2009 are very sensitive to overheating and known for blown head gaskets. As long as you don’t overheat them they will last a very VERY long time. Also correction to the engine for the first gen. The first two are correct the 3rd was a 5vzfe. I have a 6 cylinder 1995 with 227k miles.
I bought a used 14 Taco base model with 64000 miles a few years ago, 2.7 auto, AC has no cruise, but replaced the bench seat recently with buckets also from a 14 model. Just replaced the rear brakes at 120,000 miles. Mine has no rust.
I did too, but when I bought mine the 2023 Tacoma was still out and it was the most uncomfortable seating position I’d ever sat in so that’s why I went with the frontier.
@ I don’t think Toyota has confutable seats I drive a newer rav 4 2022 I don’t see what people like about those cars it makes my back hurt feels like your driving a car from the 90s
I had a 2008 TRD sport for 11 years, traded it in on a 2017 Tacoma TRD sport, that I still own. I really liked the 4.0 auto combo in the 08 better than the 3.5 CVT combo in the 17. But absolutely no problems with either pickup. Change tranny fluid in the 08 @ 60k sum miles, after noticing slight slippage.
*In one year after updates are implemented, BUY A NEW TURBO CHARGER and keep it handy, because the PRICE WILL GO UP* and many people will be replacing these, along with the oil feed line that goes to the TC that lubricates it, BUY BOTH, you always replace both because if the oil line is plugged in anyway, which in many cases is the cause of TC failures, and you put a new 2k TC in and it will burn out again in two months.

? The 1GR 4.0 liters were widely regarded as better suited to the Tacoma than the newer 2GR 3.5s. Better power off the line and quieter. 2GR had only slightly better fuel economy.
Purchase the 2014 Tacoma TRD sport v6. 40. 69,000 MI. I want to change the plugs. One side has NGK. The other side Denzel. On the passenger side. The middle plug was full of oil. The plugs look like. They've been incense factory. So I ordered the gasket. The truck didn't smoke or anything. But it worried me about the piston. Down the road.
@Calimota619 ohh nice 👌🏾👌🏾 yes well obviously look for any rust on the frame, toyota fixed that problem after 2012 but you never, still look at it. Get a feel of the manual in all gears as well, how many miles does it have?
I have a Toyota Tacoma Pre-runner 4 Cylinder , my wheel shakes a lot when braking, I read its the rotors, if it is, do I need to change front and back or can I fix the issue just replacing the front ones? ( I'm on a budget this month but need this done ), any info will be greatly appreciated - know nothing about cars
Couple of things I dont agree with. 1st. 4.0 Liters can get respectable mpg, i avg 20.5 combined. Secondly, the seats were much more durable in the 2nd gen than the 1st. Lastly, how could you not talk about the durability questions on the new Tacoma when there have been two that have broken while test driving them, one was a transmission issue andnthe other a front suspension issue. Not to mention the new Tundras are having major issues.
2024 Tacoma "best Tacoma ever"??...common knowledge that turbo engines increase engine pressure thereby reducing lifespan. This is something you're stuck with, not to mention the transmission issues that are popping up with this model. Aside from a rather extreme jump in price, these are reasons new Tacoma sales are dismal.
I would never buy a used Tacoma, especially one with 4WD with lift kit because of possible owner abused offrod. Unfortunatey most buyer would not buy the new 2025 because of the 4cyl, turbo enigne.
Toyotas are known to be reliable, under stressed designs. The new 4 cylinder with turbo chargers and more electronics, just won't last as long as the old Tacos.
2024 tacoma is a victim of the ford frontend style same as every other pickup nowadays. Needlessly large front bumper that is just plain ugly. You lose front approach angle clearance and gain nothing other than an aesthetic that appeals to people who don't use trucks for work. Unfortunately only the trd pro and trailhunter trim correct this. I suppose you could go aftermarket but its already an expensive truck. In fact it's why I'm in the used market at all.
"A badly worn tow-hitch is a badly worn tacoma." - so many solid cheat codes in this thoughtful video. 💯
I'm concerned about the new turbo charged engine. As a general rule they tend to wear out more quickly. I wish they would've given the option of a normal 6- cylinder.

Toyota has had experience with turbos for decades overseas. Diesel engines mostly, but they also create more heat so..

I love my 2012 4x4 TRD sport in manual Taco won't get rid of it 😎🤘🏾
Anything to look out for? Currently in the process of buying a 2014 4x4 manual Tx Baja edition.
@Calimota619 ohh nice 👌🏾👌🏾 yes well obviously look for any rust on the frame, toyota fixed that problem after 2012 but you never, still look at it. Get a feel of the manual in all gears as well, how many miles does it have?
You want to use copper plugs and not iridium plugs in the 2nd gen Tacomas. Iridium plugs cause misfires on the 2nd gen.
Any comment on VVT-IE (electronic) vs VVT-I? Are they just as sensitive to oil wear or not as bad since the activation is electronic?
Even on the 3rd generation Tacoma has weak leaf springs. I will be adding Add a Leaf to the rear of my 23 Tacoma
which generation should i get? i just want a truck to transport stuff from yard sales .
Any year except the 2016.
Almost bought a 1st gen 4 cylinder 4wd. It had no acceleration!
1st gen Taco was a V6 (5vz-Fe) not in line 6
I have a 2016 in super white. The paint sucks! Not too bad though. It’s only peeling under the hood, annoying tho
Seems like many are not as enthusiastic about the new 2024 as you are.
I have a 2011 4.0. Only has 88k on it. It was gifted to me. I’d rather have my father in law back though. My first Toyota. Can’t even hear it run.
Darn it...I just checked my Tacoma...built in Texas...but with date of 2/17.
1st gen’s came with 3.4 L V6.
check the frame for rust
Thank you for your input
This guy must live in a different world. All of the millions of mid west tacoma owners are like wtf. IF it doesnt have rust, ahahah
Eventually I will buy a used Tacoma once I am done with my 88 Hilux 4×4 with the 3.0!
They used to be really good..
Not so much anymore...
The best Tacoma is the one not driven in the winter.
Their damn fly by wire is a PAIN IN THE ASS
2024 tacoma is a victim of the ford frontend style same as every other pickup nowadays. Needlessly large front bumper that is just plain ugly. You lose front approach angle clearance and gain nothing other than an aesthetic that appeals to people who don't use trucks for work. Unfortunately only the trd pro and trailhunter trim correct this. I suppose you could go aftermarket but its already an expensive truck. In fact it's why I'm in the used market at all.
👏👏💯🔝
👍👍😀
First at All is ROT FRAME….
Don’t say present. The new Tacoma is having major issues.
We don't have the Tacoma but the Toyota Hilux.
Bad ending
2025 is the latest bad year for the Taco.
😂😊
Nope Ill die with my 22 off road 😂
Perhaps the most overrated truck ever...
Toyota puts the 4.0 1gr in Land Cruisers around the world to this day. The 2gr 3.5 was used in the Camry and sienna minivan
Never like a 4 cylinder w/ turbo engine (especially truck).
Its a good truck but i wont buy tacomas coz they are ugly as hell....lol!
Not anymore 2025 sucks with four cylinder turbo and the price sucks
