Welcome back! And I am very happy that someone compare xperia 1 with pixel 3, but not only in auto, but also using manual HDR mode in sony. Currently own Xperia 1 and I think it's a great all-rounder phone (not thee best though). Can you compare Xperia 1 and XZ2 Premium? Dx0 mark is such a trickery. Looks like if you pay enough, you get good scores, Sony didn't pay so they put midrange scores for a flagship phone so people would avoid Xperia. Loved your video mate cheers
I have observed one thing. Dxomark releases the reviews of their clients immediately after the phone launch. But for others like Sony or Nokia they delay their reviews and publish it just before the next product launch of that brand. And the rating will be obviously low so it affects the brand image and the sales of the new product. Ultimately it benefits their client brands.
@@PixelPeepers It's not fair and not doing anything good for the underdogs and also they are not appreciative of any innovation. They are masters in camera tech and yet they say that AUTO mode should only be the option for consumers. Funny
Finally I found somebody that makes sense. Being a professional photographer I at least know that night photos should look like night photos not like day. I wonder if all the smartphone review channel owners ever tried shooting a dslr in full manual mode at night. Or if they even know the very basics of photography or the speicific jobs of specific hardware. Its all about surreal cartoonish looking bullshit all over the place.
Its not so much about HDR overprocessing to get unrealisticaly bright night shots (Night modes are a good OPTIONAL feat to have), but that HDR overprocess in them Night modes make color science go absolutely berserk, as seen here on the Pixel where it turns green to blue, making em look fake af.... No real photographer can work with that.
@@youdarkraver The last and most proper approach to high quality photos through a phone camera was actually the nokia n8. No excessive software processing. Just a wide aperture(for that time) lens on a large sensor and a true mechanical shutter curtain. It also had an in built nd filter. Overall it was the closest you could come to a traditional dslr. If the makers had stuck to that mantra and kept on developing that tech then we truly would have gained a big boost in raw image quality by now. But after the 808 pureview, everyone started focusing more on software. Software is important but hardware even more.
So who do you think more correctly conveys colors and white balance during daytime shooting? Xperia 1 vs Lg g8 vs Galaxy S10 vs Iphone xr vs Pixel 3? which of them is more likely to get the correct white balance? And how much percentage would you give each of them?
Woohoo meine freund, nice job. Audio quality better on Sony, 2:18 what color is more accurate Sony or pixel? By lanterns. Manual HDR is a weapon, but HDR job also to make photo more realistic, why it reduces details?. Maybe in future updates it will fix it. Agree my XZ3 at night suffers, but I trying with manual and it helps, but still... Now I'm starting to doubt that Sony needs Gcam. It seems they want to evolve their own app. Waiting for daylight thanks mate!
In day light comparison please don't forget to test eye focus from Sony. Put a model (your friend or wife) to walk and shoot with both devices to see if it does work properly and gives a real advance for people photography.
Thanx for the video. One of the best online for Xperia at least. Texture on night photos Xperia is awful but i love the way Xperia preserves the night feeling and sharp video
Well, color balance is just a slider away, you can easily fix it while taking the shot, in real time. But the problem you mentioned is more pronounced in videos, and it's a pain in the ass to fix it there
I myself prefer the auto mode. I like dark contrasty shots that better emphasize the night. Night photography should be dark, and this night modes trend is not really my cup of tea
Daylight comparison will come this weekend. Sadly, the nokia 9 is off duty, i dropped it, cracked the screen, and a replacement screen is nowhere to be found in my country
Pixel Peepers This bad imx445 is not Motion Eye, only 1600 iso for video. They added some stuff to cinema pro, Xperia 1 will get with android 10 next month. Xperia 5 has already. I hope the phone Max J posted while ago on twitter is real. The leak suggests 48MP f1.2/f2.4 25mm + 12MP f1.2/f2.4 25mm + 20MP 15mm + 12MP 75mm + 8MP periscope + ToF In november someone posted on exmor wikipedia page about a imx666 (66.6MP but 50 effective, but not quadbayer), I heard it is real but was still prototype months ago. Looks like 1/1.5"..
Actually you can get like night sight or night mode in Sony Xperia by using manual mode and change the shutter speed into 1 second with the steady hand. Seriously you will get amazing shot if you try it in low light scene...
Pixel Peeper, you're finally back! I'm so glad that you're starting to make the camera review videos again. First of all, Sony definitely upped their camera game with Xperia 1 and I can clearly see it - the amount of detail in low light is extremely impressive and comparable to Samsung, Huawei and Pixel in most cases. That's some outstanding achievement by Sony especially given how lackluster the cameras were on their mobile phones in low light. I guess that their RAW noise reduction is working very effectively here, I truly wish that other companies implement this kind of noise reduction as well in future. I hate to say, however, that their auto mode is still quite underwhelming under complex lighting in terms of exposure. I've seen Anandtech's camera comparison and in auto, during the night Xperia 1 didn't trigger HDR at all. It blew up all the highlights and crushed darker areas, and that's now how it looks in real life since the dynamic range of our eyes are far wider than that of any digital cameras available in the market. So orange lights should look orange, and red neon lights should be red, not white - Xperia 1 clearly still fails in that aspect even though they have been criticised for that since Xperia XZ era. Though the most irritating fact is that even though the manual HDR doesn't seem to affect the image quality in negative way and solely widens the dynamic range and exposure, for some reason they decided not to use it in auto processing. What was exactly the point of *not* using it when it only improves the image quality? A very questionable choice by Sony, I hope they will fix it in future updates. By the way, your claim on DxOMark that their score is BS - while it's applicable to its total mark, if you break it down into individual category scores, you'll start to see why Xperia 1 has lost a lot of marks compared to competing flagship smartphones. Exposure inconsistency, very obvious artifacts, loss of details in low contrast areas and so on.. they have some of the sample photos on their website so I definitely recommend you to read the review and check them out.
About those DxO scores... I call bullshit because some makers like xiaomi and oneplus, as soon as they launch a new phone, the dxo review is already up, and is much more in depth, like 10 pages of it. And they have pretty big scores. Xperia 1 has launched a few good months ago and they just released the review, a pretty superficial one, with a low score. I have tested both xiaomi mi9 and oneplus 7 pro, and compared to the xperia 1, there is no chance in hell they have a better camera than the xperia 1. Especially the oneplus 7 pro, which is a big disappointing mess in my opinion
Felicitari pentru clip, deocamdata am un xz2,ma gandesc la un xperia 1,dar deocamdata mi se pare un pic cam mult, poate cand mai scad preturile il voi achizitiona!
You said it all. The 1 has a natural approach in auto mode, but in manual HDR it handles like the "normal" smartphone. But DxO only testing basic things (and they're proud to claim it), and reviewers praising HDR, it doesn't emphasize the capabilities of this phone.
And the man is back and the wait was well worth it... Sad to hear about the troubles you went through but it's good to known that it has all passed. Wish you all the best in the future. I sure was waiting for this one and an extra thumbs up for trashing dxomark as they don't deserve any better... The funny thing is I was discussing the same thing on some other channels and it was sure a pleasant surprise to watch your video start with just that point, dxomark rating is bs. In fact thanks for that. No, I see the point you are trying to make here but there is no denying that in the wake of the craze introduced by the mobile marketing divisions of shooting in low light the pixel's pictures look much more appealing though I do like how Xperia keeps the images closer to reality. Also the level of details in some areas specially the picture with the writing engraved into the metal plate was insane on pixel 3. So yeah while Sony still needs to cover more, they seem to be getting back in the game. Looking forward to the daylight and dusk time shooting comparison and requesting a similar match between XZ3 if possible as I am now rocking an XZ3 😁. Welcome back dear and keep it up 👍. Ps. If you could, then, please do try open camera and camera mx apps on Xperia 1 specially for lowlight video recording. I have experienced that both the front and rear cameras on my XZ3 gather far more light in both 4k and 1080p in low light on the said apps. It also enables 4k video on the front facing camera.
Also another thumbs up for adding the manual HDR mode. In fact I have been using it for a very long time now and it's good to see someone bringing it to the light. Also if one knows how to tweak the camera better in manual mode then one can get even better results which may catch others by surprise...
There is no need for camera mx or open camera for video recording. Now you have manual video recording, just set the iso higher, or change the shutter speed, and voila, you gather more light. I will make a video about this
Good video. Not really interested in either phone but it's good to see this kind of comparison. Any good pixel 3 camera APK for note Galaxy Note 9 exynos?
Bro, glad to see you came back! Nice comparison, again! About the results, I wouldn't choose no one for night videos 😀 And maybe would choose Pixel for photos. About the Dxomark result, they don't testing them in a low light scenarios. So , please make a video where they are compared in a day light. Then we can be sure if the results are fair or not. Wish you all the best!
Great to see you again! I personally think that it is not a good idea to take photos at night without a flash. Usually, with a dedicated camera, I use external flash even at day time. And yesterday I tested my 5 Mp 2004 year Canon PowerShot G5 equipted with an external flash and the photos were astonishingly much better than smartphones produce. Can you compare how smartphones take photos with flash turn on and off?
Sure i can my friend. I will include flash photos in my next lowlight comparisons. I myself am not really a fan of flash, especially when it comes to portraits and skin tones. I rather use it in daylight in backlight situations, to properly expose the foreground
@@PixelPeepers I agree that flashes in smartphones are usually garbage compare to an external camera flashes, but it gives some improvement at least. But at night any light is artificial. Do you use some additional light for smartphones? It would be nice if you test them also.
Great one mate, I'm surprised how good Sony stands in auto mode against pixel 3 even in night site, the difference is just hdr but still manual mode does the job, and don't understand why people complain about the dynamic rang and night shots, it does pretty well the thing it just doesn't do over processing, and that's what I like, to be honest, I like to edit my photos in lightroom, over processing doesn't give that flexibility, sometimes good and sometimes terrible and it can't be undone
Agree. I did a quick test yesterday late night when it was close to dark. Image taken in Auto without HDR looked good and sharp but with some very dark areas. It was quite near to the real thing however. If you want you can easily adjust the photo in Lightroom and bring out light and colors from those areas, so DR is pretty good. If you want HDR you just press manual camera with everything in Auto including HDR. It is basically "Auto" with HDR default enable - especially if you create a short-cut icon on your homescreen with direct link to manual mode (long press camera Icon, drag "manual" icon with 2 lines to home screen). With HDR you get more light but less detail/texture. I prefer Auto in most cases or manual without HDR, as this is very close to neutral and with most details preserved. BTW - DxO is a joke...focus on fake AI processing and money.
@@skankblocbologna3482 Yeah exactly, I've photo samples from Xperia 1 compared to the one plus 7 pro Sony is more detailed but one plus 7 had brighter image and brighter in shadow areas but in lightroom I adjusted both to look decent and look similar, Sony looked much more detailed even in shadow areas oneplus looked a bit washed out, I still have the samples in lightroom
Iphone xs still has the best camera for daylight photos in my opinion. And for videos, it's the king, no doubt. But, the proof for dxo not being legit... Oneplus 7 and xiaomi mi9, above the xperia 1? Really?
@@PixelPeepers indeed, the weakness of xperia 1 raised in the review was true but their scoring isn't, it's like they don't want the xperia to get above other recent phones. Ive read GSMarena's photo comparison with the S10, and the xperia isnt far behind, only in dynamic range maybe
@@PixelPeepers i haven't idea about mi9.. but i prefer oneplus 6t and oneplus 7pro images than when compare to note 9.. i trus it because it is overall score.. not specific for hdr , not specific for detail and not specific for noise and zooming.. i think that's why p20 pro also has higher score than iphone xs.. i personally prefer xs very much than any huawei.. but that tests i notice some sections p20pro images are better than xs.. specially zooming and indoor noise levels.. that's why..

I just saw your video and loved it. At first I was very underwhelmed with the Sony, because it lacked the "WOW" factor of turning night into day. But as I examined the pictures from my Huawei P20 pro and the Sony, I began to realise just how good the Sony is. On closer inspection, in most instances the Sony outguns the P20 by a long margin. I realised with the Sony compared to other smart phones, is that the camera is true to life. So, with the Sony, you don't get eye popping results, that look good on initial inspection, but are totally artificial. I would not give the Sony to somebody who simply wants to point and shoot, without ever wanting to take control. The Sony is capable of shooting a picture that in most cases is better or as good as the P20 in tricky lighting situations but it is no point and shoot king. Unless you are willing to put in the time and effort, the Sony will always underwhelm, if all you want is the "wow" factor. And that is where the Chinese manufactures have made a massive score - they know most people are easily fooled and they make a product to fit. Sony, on the other hand have stayed true to photography and have produced a system that gives results that are closer to life. I've always wanted to take up photography as a hobby and the Sony is allowing me to experiment in ways that I would never have done, if I had gone for another brand. Late update/afterthought - the Sony does have a very good night mode, called shutter speed. With a tripod and a shutter speed of up to 30 seconds, some really good night shots are achievable.
I watched the video in my p30 pro and I found pixel better at everything except microphone. Maybe I should watch it on my pc because phone's screen is too small to judge Nice comparison
Welcome back. Glad to see sony upping its game once again in the camera department. Proffered the xperias shots in auto to the pixels. Not one for night modes. Rarely use it on my s10. Used sony devices from 2010 up until 2016 when I moved to samsung precisely because of the weak camera performance. Tbh the pixel isn't that tough a phone to beat unless you want shoot in night mode only. I find the 3 to 5 seconds wait too much to use regularly. The pixel is mainly a front camera phone. Would be good to return to sony one day but samsung just has a more complete package overall so I'll wait and see how things shape up with sony over the next few years. Good performance though in auto. Could do with brighter exposure but then maybe safer to under expose. S10 can annoyingly over expose especially when pointing the camera downwards so all phones have their good and bad. All in all, nice to see an xperia after so many years gone to toe with the competition. Last time some could do that was in 2014. They've lagged behind ever since so it's about time. Computational photography should be used to improve the photo and not to produce and deliver them which is what google is all about. It's no secret, I'm no fan of Google's ideas.
Not sure how you say still photo front camera is better in sony, it looks like you left the beauty mode on in pixel. And the selfie shot on sony got so much over exposure on your face.. anyway good to see sony improved so much in low light
DXOMARK is big bullshit if you pay em they will increase score, GSM arena made a better job than DXOMARK how can it be that medium range phones get same score result as flagships
As a phone, the Xperia 1 is better than the Pixel 3. Pics are still a bit noisy in my opinion, but photos are very good with class leading detail retention.

Are my impressions or is the Pixel 3 delivering a highly artificial, white and extremely clear image of the Xperia 1 with a more natural image and all sorts of shades closer to the real but is darker too? Why don't you use the connected HDR settings system and the clarity of color and brightness on the Xperia 1 Pro automatic mode being that it has it to be used? Sony has never been good at these images in automatic mode and so far it does not have this software with these facilities! For this type of amateur user and for this type of thing there are the: Pixel, Huawei, One Plus, Galaxy, HTC, Xiaomi and IPhone! Then my friend! To get the best results you need the best of each and the best of Xperia is the user know how to use everything the Smartphone offers!
@@PixelPeepers Should be interesting. I find Cinema Pro app is recording 4K video better than the main camera app. Sony should probably update the main camera app with parts of the Cinema Pro software. Also put a HDR button in Auto mode to make all the reviewers happy. I don't miss it though and find that the Xperia 1 only enable HDR when really needed - like shooting against the sun or similar. Manual mode on the Xperia 1 is really good and very easy to use and setup.
Now after seeing dozens of reviews of and around the Xperia 1 as well as comparison videos I can conclude a few things. There are a lot and I mean A LOT biased reviewers not correctly handling the Xperia 1. I feel like lots of them shoot bad pictures and videos on purpose. Seeing the same comparisons from Sony owners it seems that this phones is capable of far more than most of them will tell you. Does it have its flaws? Of course it has. So do other phones. Does it have the best camera? Well... I just bought one and will check it out myself. I think many people today have too high expectations for a smartphone. SONY is capable of a lot of things as well as Samsung, Huawei etc. They are all GREAT phones! And I think in the end it really comes down to your own preferences. Do you like nice and more or less accurate colors? go with Sony. Do you like something different and more unique and like good quality? go with Sony. Do you like Instagram worthy pictures? go with Samsung. Do you mostly use auto-mode and just like to take a quick snap and get good results? Go with Samsung, Huawei etc. Do you want to spy on your neighbour or next homicide victim? Definitely go with the Huawei P30Pro! In the end if you buy a flagship phone you expect high prices but you usually get what you pay for: a GREAT smartphone! Except for the iPhone. Everything there is overpriced, like literally :P
The note 10 is already in the mail, but until then, i have the p30 pro and oneplus 7 pro in line for a xperia 1 match. But first, daylight against the pixel 3 is mandatory
Im quite certain someone is providing Dxo with Xperia phones, and paying for them "reviews" as they see it fit to their own interest. But it is not Sony. On a side note, Sony allowing someone else doing that, and making serious damage to their sales through such "advertising" sites...is a problem of their own.
Sony is better than before, but still behind imo. The thing with the Japanese is, they probably think multi frame software is an abomination. So it'll take time for them to do this, if ever.
Problem is that I broke my Xperia 1 screen and waiting for a replacement... I bought myself a Note10+ and I'm literally returning it whenever the xperia is sent back. Sure the N1-+ has a lot of features and S pen etc... But the screen quality is awful and the camera is much of a disappointment. Long story short, the Xperia 1 wipes the floor with the N10+. It's the best display I've ever had in a long time and the most accurate color reproduction be it display or camera.
Well, last night i just shot the photos for the note 10 vs x1 lowlight, and i must admit, the note is better almost in every picture, in very low light. For medium indoors light, xperia is better
@@PixelPeepers Are you on 55.0.A.6.56 ? Because i currently have both devices in hand and the Xperia is managing to keep all the details it can ( sharper ) even in low light. I can read the texts really far much better. The samsung is overly soft and tend to lose much more details.
Do you think Sony will fix the stabilisation for video? Or is it a hardware issue? My USA note 8 is on its last legs. Depending on sale it will be Xperia 1 or the note 10+. Leaning towards the note because it's easier to use third party apps. Plus Sony for some ungodly reason won't use their own 48mp sensor but they use Samsung isocell. Plus. The Xperia 1 is a Samsung LED. something fishy is going on with Sony for sure. Breaks my heart 💔
Is there a way to gain control over the aperture for this device? I've begun to love that on my note 8. It would be a bitter pill to swallow and a tough surrender as a consumer. Do you know if any third party apps allow aperture control?

Great video. Totally agree with your analysis. Glad that you're back.
Thanks mate! Glad to be back at last!
At 2.18, both screwed up. Pixel is to green, sony is too magenta

My pleasure mate!
In day light comparison please don't forget to test eye focus from Sony.
Put a model (your friend or wife) to walk and shoot with both devices to see if it does work properly and gives a real advance for people photography.
I can already say eye autofocus works like a charm

Just a few short clips. I will try to find a good scenery to shoot a nice video for a good youtube demo

Thanx for the video. One of the best online for Xperia at least.
Texture on night photos Xperia is awful but i love the way Xperia preserves the night feeling and sharp video
I don't think the pixel is better in this regard, at least not in auto. There is a lot pf noise that gives the impression of texture depth
Welcome back my friend! I missed your videos so much!
Thanks man, good to be back
whether there is a steadyShot on the xperia 1?
It has in both 4k and 1080p. It's just not that effective in 4k
PixelP, turn off EIS and keep only OIS for 4k video in standard camera app, the difference in stabilisation will be quite obvious ;)
Glad to see you back. Sony's warm tone works well outdoors, but sometimes makes colours look too warm indoors.
Well, color balance is just a slider away, you can easily fix it while taking the shot, in real time. But the problem you mentioned is more pronounced in videos, and it's a pain in the ass to fix it there

@@PixelPeepers
"There is night mode in Sony. and apart, the high sensitivity Iso mode, did you use it to compare the night photos? "
So which is better between manual HDR or Auto in Xperia 1?
I myself prefer the auto mode. I like dark contrasty shots that better emphasize the night. Night photography should be dark, and this night modes trend is not really my cup of tea
Will there be a daylight comparison? How about the Nokia 9 comparison?
Daylight comparison will come this weekend. Sadly, the nokia 9 is off duty, i dropped it, cracked the screen, and a replacement screen is nowhere to be found in my country
Curious that with same size of sensor and using f1.6 it is still much darker.
I dont think other phones push iso much higher to make brighter.
Huawei uses ISO levels over 3200
Pixel Peepers This bad imx445 is not Motion Eye, only 1600 iso for video.
They added some stuff to cinema pro, Xperia 1 will get with android 10 next month. Xperia 5 has already.
I hope the phone Max J posted while ago on twitter is real. The leak suggests 48MP f1.2/f2.4 25mm + 12MP f1.2/f2.4 25mm + 20MP 15mm + 12MP 75mm + 8MP periscope + ToF
In november someone posted on exmor wikipedia page about a imx666 (66.6MP but 50 effective, but not quadbayer), I heard it is real but was still prototype months ago.

Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it
I love every content you make and i never trust dxomark 😁
Thanks for the vote of confidence my friend
You said it all. The 1 has a natural approach in auto mode, but in manual HDR it handles like the "normal" smartphone. But DxO only testing basic things (and they're proud to claim it), and reviewers praising HDR, it doesn't emphasize the capabilities of this phone.
True that! 👍👍
I will make a video about this
@@PixelPeepers yes that's the cinema Pro app right

About the results, I wouldn't choose no one for night videos 😀 And maybe would choose Pixel for photos.

Hey mate. Nice to be back. My next video will be in daylight, same phones
thankyou for detail explanation.

Next time, daylight comparison
Din ce oraș ești ?
Salut. Din Focsani
Yeah, an HDR post processed photo leaves little to no headroom pf editing...

@@PixelPeepers lol BEST video camera Xperia 1 iphone does not record me the same or in dreams especially at night
@@PixelPeepers yah.. i also prefer for the iphone xs max camera for daylight images and videos.. that video experience is far better than others.. our country youtubers also use iphone xs max for videos when their traveling.. 🔥
So i see you understand sony's philosophy
I watched the video in my p30 pro and I found pixel better at everything except microphone. Maybe I should watch it on my pc because phone's screen is too small to judge Nice comparison
Oled screens accentuate the black levels, so sony photos will appear much darker than in reality 👍

When is the note 10+ Snapdragon vs Exynos review coming ? :D
Never 😂. The note 10+ is too expensive to buy it in both variants
Skin softening on pixel was turned off since i unboxed the phone. I hate that feature 😅

Exactly

@@PixelPeepers Congratulations! So I'll be able to agree to the tests...

You are definitely right my friend!

They don't need to be provided with phones, they can buy and review just like i do.
Sony have more natural colours, that's it.
True that! 👍👍
Sony is better than before, but still behind imo. The thing with the Japanese is, they probably think multi frame software is an abomination. So it'll take time for them to do this, if ever.
Maybe 😅
Problem is that I broke my Xperia 1 screen and waiting for a replacement... I bought myself a Note10+ and I'm literally returning it whenever the xperia is sent back. Sure the N1-+ has a lot of features and S pen etc... But the screen quality is awful and the camera is much of a disappointment. Long story short, the Xperia 1 wipes the floor with the N10+. It's the best display I've ever had in a long time and the most accurate color reproduction be it display or camera.
