Red Wing 8119 Iron Ranger Mesa Oxblood Leather Conditioned with Mink Oil

- I am giving my 8119 Iron Rangers a conditioning after a muddy walk in the park with my dog. I am using exactly what Red Wing recommends on their website. Mink oil does have a tendency to darken a leather. I am fine with the 8119 Iron Rangers getting slightly darker. If I wanted to keep the leather as purchased I would have used Red Wing's Leather Cream.

Beautiful leather, beautiful boots! I think the color looks way better after mink oil treatment.
Thank you Simon
I’m gonna have to get a pair of those Oxblood Rangers. Those laces are the same that came with my Amber Harness ones. Great Video.
Hi. Another Great Video. I think they look better after the Mink Oil.
Thank you!
Beautiful boots. I find them more appealing than the Amber version. Just wish they came in wide sizes like the Amber version.
I love both the oxblood and copper. I can’t decide what color to choose. I really lean towards the reddish/brown color but the copper looks cool when worn in
Red Wings does make some good looking boots.
I have these boots and after 3 yrs. of wear they are much darker. I would call the color a plum brown. Imagine a dark brown with a hint of red. I ordered some brown waxed laces for mine; the laces were too light so I dyed them with some leather dye I had. It matched perfect. I still love these boots and I have never seen anyone else with this exact boot.
Send me a photo. I would love to see them!

what a beautiful boots!,after watch this video,i decided,my first red wing boots:8119!
PERFECT!
Great video. I use Saphir Pommadier in burgundy to polish the toe caps. This is probably controversial but improves their appearance. The oiled leather is odd and seems to be quite easily marked, but blemishes disappear (except scratches) when the leather is rubbed with a soft cloth. You do need a welt brush.
I walk into Red Wing with the intention to purchase a welt brush then I leave with another pair of boots! : (
I was told by a red wing employee that the best way to apply the Mink is with some rubber gloves. To grab small amounts, rub hands and add little by little. I mean, prob same result. Just hate stuff on my hands lol.
Cool boots . good choice in boots👍👍👍👍👍
damn. those are some slick boots
thank you
It's amazing what only the horse hair brush does.
I agree.
im doing the same on my Asian edition moc toes with heavy lug soles. Very relaxing. My hands are very soft from the mink oil. Lol
Have the 8119's as well. Love to see them stay kind of red instead of over oiled and dark. I have a couple of bottles of the protector but can never find what it does. Is it silicone spray?
I don’t recommend leather foam cleaner and mink oil since your Oxblood’s leather still looks healthy and in good condition. Just use warm damp cloth to remove those dirts will do the trick. Unless the leather is old and dry then apply a little bit of leather conditioner is good to go.
The color on those look exactly like your Blacksmith 3340. Maybe it’s the lighting. Nice!
It is the lighting
I need to get mine red like these again. Mine darkened like crazy after 4 years
You should try using a hair dryer after applying the mink oil, it heats up the leather and allows the mink oil to penetrate more. I use the same technique after using Obenauf's heavy duty LP. Also, I'm pretty sure the mink oil waterproofs the leather pretty well. Nice vid!
So im about to buy the 9060 Beckman flat box size 11 any ideas where I could find a pair of Munson rangers in 11 or so size
Have you got a pair of Ice Cutters in your collection? Perfect for wet parks (and cutting ice from wintery frozen lakes in Oregon of course)
Have you ever checked out Smith’s Leather Balm? Great video! Love my oxblood’s too!
No, not yet.
man i came to iron rangers from doc martens, and the break in period was a joke compared. the doc martens leather is definitely thinner and more soft that its broken in NOW because of how thin it is, but man the iron rangers even being thicker leather felt way comfortable out of the box. i went in and tried them on in the store and i'm pretty sure i made a silly face at how blown away i was by how comfortable they felt lol. that roomy toe man
C.J. Love your channel, man! One question - does the mink oil darken the boots at all?
Yes, mink oil will darken the leather.
How long does the shine last after applying the mink oil? I really love the look of these with a bit of shine. Has the leather darkened much since you made the video?
It lasted for quite some time...a week or so. No, the leather did not darken.
CJ Cook thanks for the quick reply! I’m considering these and either the 8085 or 3343 as my first Red Wing purchase. Looking for something that will fit in a business casual office.
@@NoBSBeardReviews 3343 all day!
what would you use to actually polish the oxblood if they get scuffed and the color gets worn away? i know red wing makes a burgundy polish
I have just used mink oil on mine. Yes, Red Wing sells burgundy for the Beckmans. I have not tried it on the Oxblood.
Does red wing now recommend the all natural leather conditioner instead of the mini oil for these? Both will darken the boots some, correct? Love your channel btw CJ!
Both will darken slightly. They mostly leave a shine.
I have the 8114 Iron Rangers. What would you consider the better boot?
The 8114 Iron Rangers have a special place in my heart.
What's the thought process of doing the leather protector after you have done mink oil?
I can understand using it if you conditioned with some lighter neatfoot oil. But mink is heavy duty stuff.
Good question
Those boots looked great before you even started cleaning them!
Thank you Tony!
Hey CJ, after using the leather Protector spray at the end did u notice any spots left behind by the spray? I used the Red Wing leather Protector spray and it left these little almost water spot looking residue on my 8130’s? Thanks 🙏🏼
I think on my first attempt it did. The spray at first comes out clumpy. The second shoe gets a more even coat. I would recommend spraying the first bit into a towel to get all the heavy drops out then apply to the boot.
Nice. Thanks brother. I just got an ever so slightly damp cloth and wiped off the spots. Appreciate the super fast response buddy. Keep up the good work. Be a boot!!!
@@vi77ain7s2 thank you for your support. Be a boot! ; )
that´s even better than mirror shine.... mirror shine is too expensive.. I use silicone and works just fine..
CJ! I need help! Got my first redwing boots. Super excited for them, but the laces they come with are terrible! Where do you get your laces man?
Which type of laces would you like? Flat waxed? Round? Leather?
Try Benjos and also try Pisgah Range LTD
CJ Cook I’m thinking round and probably leather laces.
@@CJCook how long are the laces of the iron rangers?
@@sarazitarosa4620 48inches
I would like to see you wear these .what outfits that would go with the color
Hey Kaleb, The oxblood is one of the most versatile colors. It looks great with black denim, blue denim, natural denim, camel canvas pants and grey denim/pants.
How do the color looked stack up to the Munson rangers color
The Munson are more red
These boots need some olive green laces!
Nice CJ! Which Iron Ranger do you like 8119 or 8085?
I like them both but I would change the sole on the 8085 immediately. So, 8119 gets my top pick.
@@CJCook I thought both use VIBRAM #430 MINI LUG SOLE
@@MrMoon-xn1ut Yes, they do. BUT the original 8085 Iron Ranger was 8115 with a Nitrile Cork outsole.
@@CJCook Oh I see Thanks I did not know...
If you have pig hair brush for shine..it will be so much better CJ!!!
Do they always use the shitty leather for the tongue? My Amber Harness looks like that too
Thinner leather yes.
CJ, have you heard that the grey roughout iron rangers are CANCELLED. instead, they are apparently releasing another Iron Ranger in Black Cherry
Haven't heard that. I heard they are delayed till next year.
@@CJCook Guess we'll see! I wish engineers would come back....
I think you should not switch out laces so much. Can I have some of your old used laces. The taslan ones last years. I wash mine and then rub beeswax on them. Melt. Boom brand new.
Great Vid. I'm getting either the 8856 or 8890 soon, just have to decide what one still. Are you familiar with obenaufs? Do you think that will over darken the oxblood leather?
I think it will darken the leather.
Come on man these look gorgeous! Even before the conditioning session. How long do you let them sit between passes (wash up, conditioning, spraying)? Thank you again
Hey Luca, between the wash and conditioning is about 10 minutes. Ideally between conditioning and spray around 15 minutes. When I conditioned my Charcoal R&T leather I let the conditioner sit overnight on the boots then I brush them.
Would the mink oil address scratches and colour imbalance on the leather?
temporarily, yes.
@@CJCook Thanks for the reply CJ, have you got any suggestions on products that could help with scratches or colour imbalance?
@@quietatse you could use the Red Wing Burgundy cream
@@CJCook lol didn't even know it was a thing, I'll look it up, thanks again.
these are $245 on amazon :-)
LOVELY!
Arrrrggghhhh they have cancelled the oxblood IR!!! Looking for my 11.5 in a hurry!!!
Yeah, I heard they were going to do that. 😞
When I would be in the store and someone was deciding between the 8119 and another boot I would tell them to buy the 8119s first.
CJ Cook looking for a deal
The 8117 set me n my pocket back
Hey cj how do you find the wings that are not offered in the USA. I have 3 white box pairs and along with the 2005 lace tags for the 100 anaversry of the company. I bought a a bunch of new old stock in my size. When a store was shutting down
Hey Carl, The Red Wing Heritage store in NYC/Grown and Sewn carry styles not available in the U.S.
Are those supposed to be dirty?
Dustin no boots are dirtier than my mind 😜
@@CJCook i bet lol
I will never understand how people will so carefully condition this boot but won‘t put shoe trees in it triggers me incredibly
Have Red Wing stopped producing these?
Yes
@@CJCook wonder why, they look so great. Do you think they will come up with something new soon in the Iron Ranger collection?
@@ksvensen Grey Muleskinner is coming out next year.
@@CJCook ahh. How do they look?
@@ksvensen same leather as the slate moc toe that came out 8863. I tried them on...They are nice.
Please do not show these laces anymore.thanks
3:00 Is this a shoe channel or a cooking show?
I'm going to take two capfulls... and put them in the bowl, stir nicely. Warm water... onion, diced... celery, beefstock... Mesa Ox Bloodsausage cooking nicely. The potatoes are baking... mmm... mmm... mmm... bit of red wine... no, red Wing! Red Wing, not red wine!
