I lived in Berlin, Germany, in the mid-60s and lifts like these were fairly common. I found them much more efficient than normal elevators.
i was wondering what happens when u just stay on it - thanks for the video!! :D
I left my heart in San Francisco.
And part of my foot in Copenhagen
+thrunsalmighty this kind of elevator cut a part of your foot??
+Andrei - Mihai Chirciu
No. but it looks as if it might,
+thrunsalmighty You'd probably break the elevator first.
actually there is a safety feature where the floor flips if you hit it from below.
This is another true European treasure. Bravo!
I loved the little ‘Der plads til en til’
And what a nice chap you ran into
I love these elevators, they are so cool! :-)
Load capacity is 1 American.
Too "dangerous" for us Americans, by the time we get done focus grouping it that elevator will be so boring and up to code. Then it could hold 2.
More like 1 per cycle
Are you kidding me? One American and the building starts shaking.
Angela Merkel?
or 2 danes or 6 chinese
This is basically natural selection. It's a great idea.
i love these patternonster elevators!
This is interesting to know... Thank you for showing! :)
We still have one at the Goethe Uni in Frankfurt, extremely efficient !!
+lucas zanichelli
You have a University from which J W Goethe graduated?
As well as one from which Helene Fischer graduated?
That is just greedy.
Fantastic video! I went on one of these in Cologne a few years ago!
Looks like the only danger here is human error. Really nifty old elevator.
This is so cool ! I've never seen anything like it .
reaching your *final destination*
i wish you had kept the damn camera steady, so we can see what those glowing red signs in the shaft say.
The blue signs indicates which floor you’re at, and the red signs reads “bliv stående” or “remain standing.”
If you can see the red signs, you’ve gone too far. (You are not supposed to ride the paternoster beyond the top and bottom floors, as it can damage the machinery.) I believe that the “remain standing” signs are there to reduce the anxiety or sense of panic, thinking that you’re about to be crushed.
Like the panic you would feel if, you were standing on the roof of a traditional elevator car. (And don’t know anything about elevators, but have seen several movies in which people die by getting crushed in elevator shafts.) Suddenly, the car starts moving upward, and you have no way of stopping it. You look up, and see the ceiling of the shaft getting closer and closer, and you are now in a complete state of panic, because you can’t get out, and you are SURE that you are going to get crushed against the ceiling, if the car doesn’t stop!!
At least, that’s what I think is the reason for that warning sign..
I hope that none of those who have just read this comment, suffers from claustrophobia, and read this right before going to bed.. 😈
this is amazing, 1913 is old for a paternoster. Most Paternosters I know are from the 1920's and newer. In Köln there is a 1920 Paternoster in service at Felten & Guilleaume, it seems to be the oldest Paternoster of this city still in service. All others are from the 50s and later - some of them even replaced older Paternoster, because the previous ones have been destroyed during WWII
Finnish parlament building has the same kind.
I went to this school a couple of years ago. While I went there, an old man paniked at the top, and tried to jump out while the wall was comming. He almost lost his leg. They added more security features after that incident.
Ohh I didn’t know they upped security. What did they add ?
I like paternosters. I'd like to use one some day. :)
i like your videos
@Streetcar1743 In this case you would have to go down to the machine room to turn it off, as this one is bottom driven, the sound as he goes around under the ground floor indicates this
:-)
actually the most energy in any moving thing is used to accelerate it, since a paternoster is always moving at constant speed (no acceleration) the energy used might not be as much as you would think
We have this at leicester uni, we used to call it the lift.
These machines can be driven with most any kind of motive power because they run continuously.
There's one in the art tower in Sheffield, England
Had one at my Uni - Was always being stopped because someone could not get on or off properly.
Very interesting if a bit dangerous. Where are the guard boards on top/below/between cars?
@funcik1 This is an early "open system", Aprons and flaps between the cabins wasn't added until later.
I can see how this can be somewhat dangerous, access to the hoistway from the landings is very easy,
on a modern paternoster with aprons and flaps, access to the hoistway from the landings is impossible
I just saw a movie that featured one of those. Can't think of the name of the movie though!
Groovy
Wait, is there NOTHING there to prevent you from stepping off in between the cars? really? Do safety regulations not exist?
Stepping where? Into the concrete wall?
You can also 'choose' not to step off a moving elevator.
Rob B I meamntmstepping off from th floor into the elevator shaft. And if you are smart enough to not do it intentionally, someone might accidentally push you - and down you go
Well, at least it would not be a long fall. You'd only fall onto the top of the car. If it were all the way down to the bottom, surely they would have something there.
As far as that goes, though, I think it's also to do with the society you were brought up in. They likely have a much more cautious eye around those elevators than we would be being brought up in an idiot-proof society.
this reminds me of Escalator
The paternoster is also called a cyclic elevator
Honestly, I think those would be much more efficient than elevators
It's a shame these never came over here at all (United States). I would like to ride in one someday.
Did you see this video were featured in Elevator World ? :)
Elsker de der elevatore men har aldrig prøvet en ;)
What do those red lighted and blue lighted signs say? It looks like the blue signs are your floor indicators, but the red ones I don't understand as it isn't in English, lol.
It says “Remain Standing.” I only know that from another video posted by this account. It says it in Danish and in English.
I am bad on MPEs as well, because I have large feet, and steps are generally small on most stairs, I prefer the elevator, unless you want to see me tumbling down the stairs.
You know what. The pants I have are fine. I don't really need to buy a new pair after all.
I saw this in metropolis. i finally found it
What do the lighted signs on the inside say?
@ATITANIC1992 There's this elevator in my town that levels 1.5 inches or so too low. Every single time I get out of it I trip. One would think I'd learn, but noooooo! I've also tripped on an elevator that levels perfectly. Guess I was just born to trip on everything in sight. :P
In Germany today we have many of them - but new ones don't get a permit to install!
shit is like a video game
If you reached out to touch the walls on the inside would it automatically stop? How were people able to spell out their names on the walls while on a constantly moving cart?
they do it vertically, even easier you barely have to move your hand
one letter per rotation
Lmao
@ATITANIC1992 Hehe, you're not alone there. I miss steps on those all the time. Especially in public. :P
Is this paternoster still in use?
What is the reason that you film elevators, the mine is i'm afrais of elevators.
Nice film i service 1 in Rotterdam
It looks dangerous, must be occuring many accidents.
I ... I will take the stairs ...
very hazardous elevator paternoster titán
This is weird that It has gaps bettwen the cabins
Wait does this guy acualy rewievs lifts ??? o.O
I never ride any paternoser by myself, but i know some few in sweden. one in Stockholm inside a head office. and 2 ASEA-Graham in Umeå University, far north of sweden...
machine room ????
Some day i will bring various sticks and jam them in between the floor and the platform just to see how thick a stick it will snap before stopping
Reddit armie general hear. Forfeit this video to reddit or it will be invaded with no permission.
Call social services for bad parenting, someone let this child on youtube.
I love that you're such a successful troll. 9/10 would read again.
***** yes.
Seriously, I see your comments on every single fucking video on r/videos.
Fuck off please. You are legitimately one of the most obnoxious commentors on RUclips that I've seen.
***** like seriously how do you not know to just FUCKING IGNORE THEM!!!
Neither are escalators, literally the normal every day elevator seems to be best in terms of energy savings, ease of use, and safety for automated vertical transportation.
Finnish parliament house has finlands oldest 1930 Kone patermoster elevator
These things use hardly any more power than a traditional escalator.
wow!!!!!!!!!!! the elevator is dangerous but amazing!!!
We'll visit Copenhagen next weekend. Where is this?
It’s located at KVUC in Vognmagergade.
@RobR386 I know, it seems much more dangerous without the bits that cover the gap between the cabins. What if you fall inbetween one?
me--You would just land in the car below.
Hvorfor er det ikke på Dansk når du er Dansker tænkt jeg lige?
Og Hvor er det henne i København
I have one at my head office building in Colombo sri lanka.can you send me a maintanace manual for this(English).it woud be great help.:)
I wish we had these in the USA more efficient and faster than elevators because you don't have to wait for the car. Plus you would never get crammed into or stuck in with a stinky person.
IAMWASKYONE63 idiot, these are about as inefficient as you can get.
more efficient than modern elevators in terms of speed? or is it very slow going up and down
But there is no wasted time waiting for the lift to slow down, level, stop and open the door.
It’s a bit sluggish but it’s nice to have 0 wait time (unless of course it’s as busy as in this video, but it rarely is)
I got anxiety just watching this
Hvor har du fundet denne fine gamle sag?
Den ligger ved KVUC i Vognmagergade.
LIMB MUNCHER
The adress is wrong
My friend attends this school and I sometimes visit just for an excuse to play on this thing
This reminds me strangely of Little Big Planet...
What is a paternoster?
Its this kind of elevator.. that has several cabins and never stops.. :)
So funny like elevator...
Flipty flügy flagy.
der er en elevator på Amagerbrogade 17 fra Otis kender ikke dens alder MEN tror der er noget 1920ërne
What if...
Nope. Nope. Nopity nope.
btw, I am afraid of elevators!!
It seems that most of the time these elevators wasting energy, because the flow of people is not permanent.
soooooo scared to ride...
So you cant get crushed by it?
Yes you can. People have died cut. I can't believe europe has not removed them!!
Well, they are pretty much removed. Theres not even an active one in Germany as far as I know.
The ones that still exist have a safety beam that stops the Paternoster if there is something sticking out, and a safety flap that presses a switch to stop the lift if your foot gets caught between the ceiling and the floor of the lift. So you can't get crushed.
What happens if u stay in?
Never mind...
Ravage Gonza--It will go up and around in the attic or down and around in the basement.
248310th view!
Stuttgart CIty Hall has one.
+Teresa Rondo Blanco. Is its use permitted to public though? I was at a police station where they had a paternoster once, but they didn't allow me to ride it -.-
+Siana Gearz It is precisely for public use. The "Arbeitsamt" (employment office) used to have one too. It's great fun!
@ATITANIC1992 I've defied physics and done that with a "normal" elevator, it's a guarantee it'll happen on one of these. xD
Ha, I would totally be one of those people who would step wrong while getting on/off and fall on her face. xD
Don't use this drunk..
Guess they can't have kids anywhere near that thing.
+Theo Pertiller Why not? They used to be common in schools a while back. Saw a lot less vandalism than the modern ones, cause you know, they aren't the most dangerous thing in the world, but they do have an intimidating quality to them.
Que susto me da 😰
helo
It is going slow:) In my country it is faster We have 40 working elevators like that
Controlled by a logitech
Fn
신기한권 덩식승강기?♡2♡×,#,-;;#*#
WHY WOULD YOU PUT WALLS ON THOSE ELEVATOR CARS, YOU PEA-BRAIN!?!?!?
