They don't break down. There is a sensor on the mesh part of the elevator. So when you're going up and you put your foot between the bottom of the elevator and the top of the mesh, it trips a switch and stops the elevator. You would seriously have to try if you wanted to hurt yourself on one of those.
@@Alex-tu5vu I ride one every day they don't break down. They stop every now and again when someone trips the sensor but then someone resets it and its runing again in a few minutes.
As long as they are used, they are safe. The buzzer was safety feature that instantly stops the elevator when you touch the grid on the top of or lift the board in the floor. It is to make sure that nothing gets stuck between floor and the the elevator and get damaged.

This elevator is called a paternoster. It is a passenger elevator which consists of a chain of open compartments that move slowly in a loop up and down inside a building without stopping. Passengers can step on or off at any floor they like.

There are also 5 of them operating in Frankfurt, Germany. 4 at the old university building (open to public, free to use) and 1 at the Flemings Hotel. Quite unique and interesting stuff
OMG I literally have nightmares EXACTLY like this all the time! Although its usually going way faster and/or free falls so fast your on the ceiling lol
I used to have to ride one of these every day as a kid. I absolutely hated it. It was super scary and all the adults acted like it was fine but it was obvious that they were afraid of it as well. Also because I was a kid no one would try to explain to me the safety features that it had because I “wouldn’t understand” so I actually thought I would get sliced in half if I messed up. That’s not to say it can’t be dangerous though, it’s fully capable of breaking a bone or cutting off a finger
Based on the name, I'd say that it was in Hungary. Apparently these elevators were pretty popular, at least to be built, in the Eastern bloc. As its structure resembles the rosary, it quickly got the name paternoster in Hungary. Since they are so dangerous, not many of them are in use anymore. For example, I did first encounter them when reading a parody book but never seen any working.
I hate that no one would explain the elevator to you. Like it didn't occur to a single adult that saying "It's fine" isn't reassuring 🤦♂️. My butt was shrinking in fear watching this
@ Dominik Lukas How did you know when to get off? How do you get off of it? It's a same know one explained it to you. I image it made the experience scarier than it needed to be.
It's called a Paternoster lift. There was one in the chemistry building at my university in the 70's. At the start of the academic year, we used to go up and stay in as the lift went above the top floor, bang the sides of the lift loudly (so others in the floor below heard it) then stand on our heads as we appeared coming down the other side back to the floor we left.
You go all the way up, then u end up in a machine room where it moves to the side and down you go to the basement. The changing directions was the best part as a kid playing in those. Every hospital had them so that the staff could go to their floor rapidly.
@@rainbowpotatoecatas someone in a wheelchair when out. I wouldnt go near it even if i got up since i would fall from balance and pain. Not enough money in the world
I've never seen an elevator like that! In contrast, I once worked on the 52 floor in one of the tallest buildings in the USA, and we had what everyone called "rocket elevators, or turbo elevators " . When I got in on the lobby floor, the elevator door closes and we blast off.... the first possible stop could be 40th floor, but on a good day there were no stops until floor 52. Under 15 seconds, and your ears popped several times.

I have an innate fear of escalators, and I don’t know why. They just scare the fvck out of me and I refuse to use them. I handle elevators just fine. This contraption falls under the hell no list
Same here. I’m afraid I’d trip, escalator falls during movement, and I can’t help but imagine my shoe could get stuck or shredded at the start and bottom. Maybe it’s because when it comes to elevators you don’t have to feel you need to rush but idk 😅
Honestly escalators can be fairly dangerous, I don’t blame you for refusing to use them. When I was little I used to love them, but the internet has exposed me to so much that I tend to avoid them too.
In German an office building had one of these and you were required to do a test to get a license to use it. There was a security guard in front of it to check your "license"
We have/had one in the court building in Lübeck. I saw it 10 years ago. Back then there was no license control. Don't know if it is still there. I hope so, because it's way faster than 2 ordinary elevators. To get everyone where they need to go
Decades ago I was an underground Miner. This video reminded me of how we traveled underground in a particular vertical shaft mine. The "cage" was open front and back and suspended by cable. The size of the cage was about the same as the elevator in the video or around the same as an old telephone box. Four of us would travel down the shaft with each of us back to back with another. Very nerve racking being inches away from the rock face and going past each open level. Just preyed that no-one had an involuntary movement or sneezed or something. As the cage was coming to your level it would slow down and stop, yet the cage would continue to bounce up and down a little as the cable expanded and contracted. It was like you were a tea bag being jiggled in the cup. 😅
An important context clue shows that you are lying about the speed. 10 seconds and 20 seconds at that speed? That building would be massive with incredible distances between floors that wouldn't make any sense. These move slower than a modern elevator.
@Zero Hitmen he speed up the video to make it look faster. When someone is stepping on it is slower. When it is fast look at the hands on people and they shake because the video is speed up

Thank you. Putting all that text at the end was a sleazy move so thanks for saving people time
They don't break down. There is a sensor on the mesh part of the elevator. So when you're going up and you put your foot between the bottom of the elevator and the top of the mesh, it trips a switch and stops the elevator. You would seriously have to try if you wanted to hurt yourself on one of those.
I would shove a cucumber in there just to be sure.
I don't think you know what he means by it breaking down.
That makes sense
@@Alex-tu5vu I ride one every day they don't break down. They stop every now and again when someone trips the sensor but then someone resets it and its runing again in a few minutes.
@@phillipjones2882domeone needed to fix or reset it is a breakdown bud
As long as they are used, they are safe. The buzzer was safety feature that instantly stops the elevator when you touch the grid on the top of or lift the board in the floor. It is to make sure that nothing gets stuck between floor and the the elevator and get damaged.

For anyone wondering, this type of lift (elevator) is called a Paternoster
That's an awesome name! Certainly would make you want to pray
That's my friends last name lol
They used to be all over Germany when I was a kid in the sixties. We had great fun with them.
The fear of elevators getting stuck has increased after watching this
This elevator is called a paternoster. It is a passenger elevator which consists of a chain of open compartments that move slowly in a loop up and down inside a building without stopping. Passengers can step on or off at any floor they like.
I love how a paternoster is also a necklace with a cross on it, In Belgium, we also use the word to describe praying.

whoever built it clearly hasn’t seen the american lawsuits😂 shit looks like an accident waiting to happen no type of safety feautures involved here just pure luck
I guess wheelchairs and baby strollers are SOL!

There are also 5 of them operating in Frankfurt, Germany. 4 at the old university building (open to public, free to use) and 1 at the Flemings Hotel. Quite unique and interesting stuff
We got a couple in Denmark also, congress have one, and 1 of the hotels have it also i believe! Pretty sure we have 3 in total.

Yes I’ve never tried it before but you can’t say it’s perfectly safe I would be scared to.
Where did you used to ride it as a kid??

You SURVIVED!

@@irenek6295 Actually, prayed to get off safely! It was particularly bad when there was a big crowd at the start and end of the day.
You go all the way up, then u end up in a machine room where it moves to the side and down you go to the basement. The changing directions was the best part as a kid playing in those. Every hospital had them so that the staff could go to their floor rapidly.

That’s me with cops
Honestly escalators can be fairly dangerous, I don’t blame you for refusing to use them. When I was little I used to love them, but the internet has exposed me to so much that I tend to avoid them too.
maybe you're afraid of visibly moving parts... opinion of ferris wheels?
I also fear escalators, and open staircases. Pretty sure I'd pass out before trying to step in it. Or in it.

In German an office building had one of these and you were required to do a test to get a license to use it.
There was a security guard in front of it to check your "license"
Surely if you fail that you should be made to retake a driving test shortly after too !? 😂
There's one in Munich at the German patent office and you don't need any kind of license
we have one at university of applied sciences Hochschule Niederrhein in Germany
We have/had one in the court building in Lübeck. I saw it 10 years ago. Back then there was no license control. Don't know if it is still there. I hope so, because it's way faster than 2 ordinary elevators. To get everyone where they need to go
Lünen?
sounds scary
😮
Thanks for the story, may you continue to have safer days! 😅
This is so interesting! Thank you for sharing
Fascinating! You don't hear people having those type of jobs much these days, at least where I live.

An important context clue shows that you are lying about the speed. 10 seconds and 20 seconds at that speed? That building would be massive with incredible distances between floors that wouldn't make any sense. These move slower than a modern elevator.
