We love pomegranates, and you probably do too. What most people DON’T like is peeling or processing a pomegranate. Since this is an ancient fruit, people from those ancient cultures and their modern-day descendants have methods to quickly process individual fruits as well as batches of pomegranates. These are old methods - nothing new, but not that well-known in Western cultures, or in North America.
In this episode, DirtFarmerJay will show you how to quickly cut and get the pomegranate arils out. You can be enjoying a bowl of pomegranate in 3 to 5 minutes!
Wear dark clothing when you cut pomegranates, as there is likely to be some pomegranate juice expelled and it is very dark red. The rich color indicates some of the healthy properties of the fruit, including antioxidants. And while the juice is delicious and colorful, it also can stain clothing, so wear dark shades of clothing or an apron when you process pomegranates.
Many people confuse arils and seeds when it comes to pomegranates. Arils are filled with juice and a small edible seed. They are transparent, and they can be chewed and ingested as is, without removing the small seed. However, if you like, you can spit out the small seeds. It’s up to you, either way is fine!
Pomegranate is often misspelled as pomengranate, pomegranite or pomagranate. It makes it easier to spell pomegranate correctly when you know the name is originally from Middle French "pomme garnete," literally meaning "seeded apple." In some areas and cultures, pomegranate is also referred to as “Chinese Apple.” It is interesting to note that the pomegranate's botanical name, Punica Granatum, translates as "apple with many seeds."
Sure you can go buy pomegranate juice or seeds in containers, but you will pay MUCH more than you will if you buy pomegranates and process them yourself. And now, with what you know, you can JUST DO IT YOURSELF.
