In the original anime they place heavy focus on avenging their fallen comrade mash and when Gaia the last member fall, he apologized for his team dying.
Theres no bad guy in one year war (maybe some of them are). Some of zeon fight for spacenoids, some of them serve for earth federation. And i must admit it that both sides somehow lost one of their love also fight to avenge them. This is what i love about gundam 0079, you feel bad for both sides and dont know which sides you want to be with.
Using "bad guys" when referring to anyone the in the earlier half of the U.C. is a bit redundant. This isn't some shitty superhero comic book, it's Gundam. There are no "good guys" and "bad guys"
