I love that Penn Badgley doesn't have any illusions about Joe. Many actors who play these type of characters always try to fully understand or justify their character (mostly as a means of motivation) to the point where they almost sympathize with them. Badgley is just like: "No, this guy's a psycho. There's no doubt about it." It's similar to Christian Bale's approach in "American Psycho" he said that a lot of other actors who auditions kept trying to justify, sympathize, and understand Patrick Bateman. Christian Bale just said: "This guy is who he is. He's a psycho. He's an alien to us. There's no higher reason for what he does, he just does it."
No 90% of the time all Joe did is right. He tried to rescue others by killing or self defense. Also the others try to manipulate other characters and try to bullshit Joe and try to make him look bad or frame him. Its all to blame themselves for ending up dead.
@@user-ox3lr8eq5s understanding the character and defending the character are two very different things. Penn Badgley is a perfect example of it. I will even say that if you find excuses to a character like Joe, it only shows that you don't understand him cause it means that you believe the fantaisies that Joe tells to himself. So that won't make you play him better, on the contrary.
My sister dated a guy who turned out to have narcissistic personality disorder. He abused her in every way except physically putting hands on her She's out of the relationship now, thankfully When we talk about that relationship, sometimes we almost start going down the rabbit hole of "why" her ex behaved as he did But we'll never really understand. He was too fucked up WE aren't malignant narcissists (like her ex was) so it's a totally foreign/"alien" mindset to us
I saw my mom watching this show and I was like “oh cool, serial killer show” and she responded “well, he’s not a serial killer, he has reasons and wants to protect people” and I was just like ?????? Fuck his intentions, he’s a serial killer lmao. Like there’s no ifs/ands, he’s planned and murdered many people, that is the literal definition of a serial killer.
@@Tocaraca serial killers don’t have to enjoy killing to be serial killers though, just because we think of them that way doesn’t mean that what defines them. There have been many serial killers who didn’t necessarily enjoy killing but did it anyway. Also he keeps souvenirs of his victims, a trademark of serial killing
The thing that irritates me about this character the most is how he is so self-aware, but he’s also delusional at the same time. And he’s also a hypocrite. He tries to justify murder by saying “I did it for you” and that irritates me. This character is fascinating. I remember in season 1 the girl Beck was like “you deserve better” and Joe says “I do deserve better.” Even though he is a murderer.
Yeah he clearly has some sort of reality disassociation. That became evident in the episode in Peach's house where he was creeped out realizing her stalking behaviour when he was doing the exact same thing.
lol Joe is not to blame. 90% of the time he killed out of self defence or to protect others from evil. And many tried to bullshit him. And dont talk about Peach that bitch. She and others are only to blame themselves to die. They did that to themsleves. Otherwise they would kill inoccent ones. I dont get it. How can all always talk bad about Joe Character. He is not the villain. Are you blind while watching? They betray him or manipulate him or mock him or trie to kill others and Joe tries to block it. They are the ones who try to manipulate other characters and framing Joe while trying to be evil and also killing. And look at beck. Fucking her therapist, lying about it, trying to kill joe when he trusts her and she fucking around on tinder as slut queen.
@@zarosderer4447 “how can all always talk bad about Joe character.” Hmmm let’s see. He’s a delusional, self-aware, hypocritical, psychopath that murdered people. And yes Beck did cheat on Joe with her therapist which is 100% wrong, but that doesn’t mean she deserved to die for it. Peach was an asshole but that doesn’t mean she deserved to die either. The fact that you’re supporting a killer baffles me.
@@tierrajones5203 LOL :D Then its better them (who didnt deserve it) to kill others. Thats what would happen. It was them or him or them or others. And she manipulated him and ghosted. then she fucked aroiund again and then oh wow she sees him with the black women and then she tries to destroy him and new relationship and does everyhing to be fucked. Good I am only watched each season only once. I would be angry if I could remember more. Hoepfully I forgot 90% of each season. Thank good. I would be in a rage when i watch again. The scene where she fucked the bartender still hunts me after 5 years. She got the shit fucked out of her and opened the curtains from the window so everyone can see how she is beeing a slut. This life is cruel. I wittnessed myself. They bitches trying to bullshit you, mock you and spit on you from above making comments or weird actions so you be the bad one in front of other people. And they do it smart without others noticing. So this show only shows how in real life most things are the same. The vicitims are to blame themselves. They did this to themselves when attacking Joe and trying to shit on his life and relationships. They deserved it
Just to play devil's advocate, there's a difference between excuse and explanation. What he does is undoubtedly bad and wrong, but understanding the reasons behind is really what drives this show and why he's interesting. In reality, it's also a very limited approach to say "this person is bad, deserves x and y and z and that's that". The whole point of understand someone's motivation is to learn how to prevent it and a lot of it comes down to social and parental issues. And yet, in stead of working to become better as a society and individuals, we just dump all the blame onto one person and call it a day. The truth is the mind is a mysterious and complex entity, and people like Joe or even real life examples are just an extreme manifestation of ideas and patterns of thinking that each of us has. If you think about it, if Joe was a healthy version of himself, he'd be a pretty decent if not great guy.
@@mariyabardarska5895 I always ask why are you advocating for the devil when people say this. An excuse is a category of explanation. You can take a person who has has a horrible life and use that to explain why which becomes an excuse then the simple rebuttal is yeah but... What about the thousands of others in this situation? The need for nuance has expanded to the forgiveness of bad people which there's a study by Abby Day that says comes from Christain influence in media. I.e advocating for the devil and everything can be explained. Things should be forgiven because yes they did horrific things but they have a good heart.
@@trianenopenottrian9108 because the devil is a representation of everything we don't want to face yet keeps creeping up every chance he gets. People's obsession with seeming perfect and never questioning things so they can stay in their comfortable bubble IS the real devil. To say an explanation is a type of excuse is the biggest bullshit I've ever heard, and if that were the case, then you just completely dismissed the value of jobs like psychologists. This argument about what about the other people in that situation is so old and so played out what I can't believe people actually still bring it up. I thought we were past it but obviously not. You talk about forgiveness but I never said anything about forgiveness. I said understanding. Whether you like to admit it or not, things that happen to us do have an impact and it's not about excusing, forgiving or justifying, but it's about understanding how the mind works and where lies the line between sanity and insanity. What makes one one or the other. It's also funny that you would bring up Christian values since they are the ones who usually jump the gun to put absolutes on things. Nothing is absolutely evil or absolutely good. Infl fact the very concept of an absolute is an abstraction because it's purely man made. If you take Joe as an example, to me knowing his life story, it's interesting to think what he could have turned out to be if he didn't develop such unhealthy coping mechanisms and took things so far. And while most people growing up in abuse and neglect may not turn into serial killers, they still develop some pretty harmful pathologies. But I guess according to you, we shouldn't look at that and work to become better, because "everyone has it bad". What a disgrace. The fact that it happens to so many people IS the problem, Triane, it doesn't make it normal just because it's common. It just makes it something we need to change. Hard to do that if we keep closing out eyes to understanding the role we play in other people's lives and how actions/lack there of matter. But people like you just don't like to to take accountability or look within to understand your own humanity so you'd rather just judge and point fingers. Fair enough, stay in the dark. Ain't nothing there that's not already in the light, only difference is it will trip you up every time because you can't see it.
@@gaurynair7639 I wouldn't really say that You is well written either. The writing is cringe af and extremely pretentious. One of the most cringe scenes in the history of all the shows that i've watched happened in season 2 of You. That being the scene where Joe jumps out a window and then Ellie just randomly says "White Male Fragility". The line makes zero sense in the context of the scene and was just the writers throwing in buzz words. The same thing they do in a lot of other scenes on the show.
I love how Penn has such a healthy relationship with Joe. LOL But, honestly, it's good that he hates him because if he didn't, I'd probably be really fucking worried.
The way he despises Joe’s character (rightfully so, the man is a roach) yet he plays him SO WELL!! I can’t think of anyone else who could portray him as well as Penn can
I can’t imagine how annoying it must be to play a villain to such a good degree, but a bunch of fan girls sexualize it and acting as if he is some sort of anti-hero!
I mean I don't think it's really that bad bc it's just a character. I love Joe as a bad guy with anti-heroic traits, he's a great character, not a good person. Never idolize a serial killer.
I rooted for him only because some of the other characters annoyed me more. But is he a good person??? NO. I found the fact that he disliked the “killer” side of Love so weird cause he’s EXACTLY like that!
90% of the time Joe did right. I understand him. He is not a villain. He is good hearted. He is justice. And killed for self defence or protecting others. So stop tallking bullshit
@@marvin2678 penn badgley is white, which is information that’s freely available on google. the character is also white, and he literally just confirmed that to you himself in this video.
I think it’s so important he continually reminds us that this is not a man we should be feeling remorse or love towards. Now a days it’s so easy for young people to sympathize and want to “bang” serial killers or abusive people bc it’s “hot” or whatever and I love how he shuts that shit down every time. Because he is incredible in this role and I think it’s because he knows we are NOT supposed to want to date someone like Joe.
@@kerp0864 I remember when season 1 came out and the comments said Becca deserved to die…I vowed to never fucking watch this show because of this shit. It’s too much
and it really sucks! because there are so few shows and movies that have the protagonist as a psychologically troubled antihero/villain, and those are my absolute favorites. but because people romanticize the hell out of every single one of them, it almost makes me not want to have them continue. but the problem isn't the art, it's the people and their problematic interpretations.
well they deserved it Joe did 90% of the time everything right. He had no choice. Self defense and trying to rescue others from getting killed. The others are to blame for their death because of their actions.
i’m so relieved that penn doesn’t give joe a break or let people have the romantic fantasy of him. he delicately acknowledges joe’s motives (finding love) but doesn’t excuse the means (stalking, murder, and desire for complete possession of someone else).
Yea I agree with him. I also don’t find Joe’a character attractive or romantic at all! He is clearly messed in the head. However I find the show fascinating to watch because of how close and personal we get with a character like this, how we get to hear his inner monologue and how he justifies all of his evil behaviour. It’s so interesting how Joe really believes he is a good person after all he did.
SAME! The show is entertaining as heck but I cant even imagine wanting Joe. My favorite thing about watching the show is just being utterly disgusted at his insanity and hypocrisy and being surprised over and over at just how insane the character can truly be. tbh, I didn't even know people were idolizing the character at all because I couldn't even imagine anyone thinking that way while watching the show. It's so sad!
I find Penn extremely attractive, but not Joe. Also, I think the fact Penn is so open about how horrible Joe is and that it’s not a love story and he’s not a redeemable person makes him even more attractive to me. Penn’s intelligence makes me 🫠😍
I actually hate the character as well and that's why I love Penn, and I love the show. People don't really like straight up good, happy, vanilla characters, they like the messed up ones. Ultimately people are drawn towards watching things that are darker. That's why the show works. It's like Dexter.
Drama can be portrayed in the most seemingly banal scenarios. I happen to enjoy portrayals of well-adjusted people experiencing relatable challenges too.
2:59 i agree it’s not a love story. It’s a comedy lmao Little scared for what’ll happen to Joe in season 4 as Penn is directing but I’m sure I’ll love it
I think he truly understands the character more than anybody else. I'm sure the studio just wants the show to be dramatic and wants people to fall in love with joe because it's good for views but I'm sure with Penn directing he'll take a darker turn and truly show people how Joe is a bad person and shouldn't be idolized or romanticized.
@@khamazon8893 Joe still has a couple good/not bad traits thoughwhich Penn might take away💀 He feels guilty about his shit.. eventually, he cares about kids and his narration is hilarious
It’s kind of poetic that he plays the role of a psychopath and like real a psychopath, he is able to see his dark motives but other people are oblivious or choose to ignore his actions telling them exactly who he is
I feel like a lot of the girls sexualizing stalkers and murderers in works of fiction wouldn’t actually want it to happen to them in real life. Like, people think a murderer is hot if it’s a book or a movie but if it were to be in real life, they’d be terrified of him.
Yeah, I think some women just want to feel strongly desired by someone they desire. There's nothing wrong with THAT, but I think movies and shows often mistakenly portray stalkers and murderers as doing what they do out of "desire" when it's more of an "obsession" with their OWN entitlement, views of how their life SHOULD be, feeling like they're "saving" someone (who doesn't need it), hurting someone who "deserves" it, control, anger, etc. I actually like that Joe is an unreliable narrator, but it's sad that a lot of fans admire or root for him lol
True. Watching the show there is this scene Spoiler! He has his ex in the back of his van, tied up, in the middle of the night, saying they're just going to rekindle their love by having a nice picnic. He's frantic and she's terrified . This scene was just so terrifying because that's the reality of him. Good guys don't tie up scared girls in their vans. Imagining it happening to someone I love, i just can't see him as 1 good person anymore.
fr, my family was stalked by this asshole for awhile and it was terrifying. i remember being like 9 or 10 walking past the dining room window seeing him in my yard and my heart instantly dropping
It’s funny that he said that because when I started watching this show, I was like what is with all these serial killer romancing glorification shows. But then… I was hooked. The writing and performances were so outstanding. I just couldn’t stop watching it. It took me about 3 or 4 episodes into Season 2 to get over the loss of Beck and be pulled back I . That is how incredible the writing and acting is in this show. So so brilliantly done.
I'm really glad that he's clear on his character and the story, like it can be fun and/or important to play a role and tell a story without liking or rooting for the character, if you're playing a villain like he is
It’s Dope How He Takes Responsibility For That Role And Never Give People Whatever Crazy They’re Looking For.. He Shuts That Shit Down.. Artist Don’t Take That Kinda Responsibility.. Admirable..
Happy to see you back! Yeah it's hard to be productive when you're just living and enjoying each moment, I get that. Lol the IFS bit, wish you all the best of luck! I think you can do it, you've had words of wisdom that have never left me!
I freaking love the first season! I just love the psychology behind the character Joe. He's obviously sick, but something I only realized after watching it is how much he idolized Beck. He kept on putting that halo over her head and blamed people around her for her actions. Beck was actually pretty awful... Self-centered, slept with like every man, treated her dad like garbage, pitying herself into oblivion, being ungrateful and so on. At least she didn't sleep with the professor. And who the heck said that YOU is a love story???? If you think that then I'm sorry.
"You" as a tv show is really interesting to compare to the original book its based off. From pure market demographics, books are easier to succeed with less consumer readership, so Caroline Kepnes creates a Joe Goldberg that is really gross, frightening and misogynistic, knowing there will be plenty of people that will be invested in seeing what happens to his character. However, tv shows need to appeal to a wide base of people and have higher margins for continued success due to production cost. So you end up with the tv show Joe, who has a whole subplot based around helping his neighbours kid from an abusive guardian and who is obviously played by the extremely attractive Penn Badgley
This is on purpose cause people end up looking up to characters like this. A Physics TA on my college campus was inspired by American Psycho and ended up murdering a student (I went to UIUC you can look it up). People end up thinking the character is cool which is stupid af so Penn is trying to emphasize like hey he is not the f*cking hero and is a terrible person.
The way that i saw a meme about his name looking like something someone made up on the spot from things they were looking at and now I can't see his name the same 😭
If Joe has a million haters, Penn is one of them. If Joe has a 1000 haters, he is still one of them. If he has 1 hater, it's Penn. If Joe has 0 haters, it means Penn has left this world.
ive always found it so ironic that in gossip girl he was announced as the person behind the blog, it kinda feels like you is gossip girl in the future and he goes completely insane
Im glad to see Penn has the same opinion as me about Joe 😂😂 I like the show because the plot is interesting and Joe's inner monologue is funny but a lot of times I'm rooting for whoever is trying to kill him at the time
I'm glad he's aware of this. This is the thought I had when watching the show. I actually stopped for a while because I was like "He's a horrible disgusting person" then someone told me about Love and I was like "Oh maybe someone will finally kill him!"
Penn Badgley dislike and confusion for the character is the same amount dislikable confusion as Rob Patterson towards Edward Cullen and I’m here for it 😂
The fact that the actors of terrible, horrible characters have to tell their own fanbase that said character is a terrible, evil person - I- We live in a society.
SPOILER ALERT for S4 pt2 The only reason why I knew Joe was never gonna start fresh because he always downplays his infatuation and killings as 'mistakes' with choosing the wrong person or how he didn't love the person right. Even when he was gonna kill himself in Season 4, he still believed that he tried everything to make his past relationships work, but he never thought that it's cos he never loved them.
3:04 this is actually my exact mindset while watching this show, they almost make Joe sympathetic but then he goes and keeps doing crazy shit and it's like "could you pretty please just be normal for five seconds so I can justify liking this character" 😭
Joe is a great example of an unreliable narrator. From his perspective, he's the tragic hero who only wants to find true love when in reality he's a murderous stalker. If only more people who watched the show believed that 🤔
imagine if Penn were a voiceover cohost during the show. Similar to the later parts of season 4 where he argues with Rhys, but more the opposite of Rhys. "oh how do you get rid of a body? LIKE YOUVE NEVER DONE THAT BEFORE" someone should at least do that in ai. would be hysterical
This show can actually open a door for a lot of copycats. This world is crazy. I actually respect him a lot and think it’s smart that he’s vocal about his disdain for the character and his morals because other people fall too deep into Joe, myself included at times 🤣 you really do forget that he’s a SERIAL KILLER and you root for him and it’s warped. Good for Penn for staying true to himself because he consistently keeps the same energy when it comes to the topic of Joe and holding him accountable

I will even say that if you find excuses to a character like Joe, it only shows that you don't understand him cause it means that you believe the fantaisies that Joe tells to himself. So that won't make you play him better, on the contrary.
My sister dated a guy who turned out to have narcissistic personality disorder. He abused her in every way except physically putting hands on her
She's out of the relationship now, thankfully
When we talk about that relationship, sometimes we almost start going down the rabbit hole of "why" her ex behaved as he did
But we'll never really understand. He was too fucked up
WE aren't malignant narcissists (like her ex was) so it's a totally foreign/"alien" mindset to us
Probably because he read the book and Joe in the book is waay creepier.
The only one he gets a pass for is for killing the pedo even though that was an accident.
Yeah, serial killers twist morals and logic to "justify" their murders all the time lol
That‘s shocking, but also there is a reason why so many women stay with abusive men and try to justify their behavior…. It‘s so sad
i kinda totally forgot that he's a serial killer. i know he's murdered a couple people but i forgot he wasn't just a psycho stalker💀
Yh he's extremely self aware and extremely delusional
Okay yes, Beck did try and escape from Joe. This was because he locked her in a cage.
It was them or him or them or others.

then she fucked aroiund again and then oh wow she sees him with the black women and then she tries to destroy him and new relationship and does everyhing to be fucked.
They deserved it
I love how level-headed he is. It's so annoying when people play horrible people and try to find an excuse. Some people are just evil.
Yes omg. He sees it the way it is. Joe is bad
Ain't nothing there that's not already in the light, only difference is it will trip you up every time because you can't see it.

and it really sucks! because there are so few shows and movies that have the protagonist as a psychologically troubled antihero/villain, and those are my absolute favorites. but because people romanticize the hell out of every single one of them, it almost makes me not want to have them continue. but the problem isn't the art, it's the people and their problematic interpretations.
well they deserved it Joe did 90% of the time everything right.

Penn’s intelligence makes me 🫠😍
So glad he sees it, because a huge part of the fan base doesn’t seem to and it’s like… how?
I actually hate the character as well and that's why I love Penn, and I love the show. People don't really like straight up good, happy, vanilla characters, they like the messed up ones. Ultimately people are drawn towards watching things that are darker. That's why the show works. It's like Dexter.
Drama can be portrayed in the most seemingly banal scenarios. I happen to enjoy portrayals of well-adjusted people experiencing relatable challenges too.

True. Watching the show there is this scene

He has his ex in the back of his van, tied up, in the middle of the night, saying they're just going to rekindle their love by having a nice picnic. He's frantic and she's terrified . This scene was just so terrifying because that's the reality of him. Good guys don't tie up scared girls in their vans.

It’s funny that he said that because when I started watching this show, I was like what is with all these serial killer romancing glorification shows. But then… I was hooked.
I love how complicated Joe is. Like he is a very bad guy but at the same time he has a lot of traits that could make him a genuinely good person.
If the role “Joe Goldberg” had 5 top haters, he would be the first in that list.
Season 4 really showed how Penn Badgley sees joe lol
