We actually went to Nicaragua first ( my wife’s home country ). But, in February we are leaving for 6 months in Guatemala, then 6 months in San Cris.
We are cool weather lovers and retired 6 months ago. We decided to slow travel for a few years in search of our favorite retirement city between Mexico and Argentina. San Cris is a good possibility. We haven’t been there yet but have done lots of research, have friend there, and friends that have been there before.

Is there a lot of places to go hiking near San Cristobal for free or very inexpensive fee? I’m talking about miles and miles of hiking trails!
Honestly we’re not sure! We never really researched that when we were there because we didn’t have a huge amount of time so opted for tours plus we didn’t have our own transport. We’re sure there are plenty of trails in the area but can’t tell you for certain. It’s definitely not super expensive anywhere in Mexico though!
You need to lear how to pronounce the name of the town first!!!

Held hostage for 6 hours
I am 60 my wife is 70
They even tore up photos of our children and grandchildren
Please consider our experience before you risk a visit to Chiapas
So sorry to hear about your experience guys! That must have been so scary and traumatising! We hope you are both okay! We’d also be keen to know if this was just an incredibly unfortunate, isolated incident or if car theft and related crime is on the rise in Chiapas. Thanks for sharing and best wishes.
