This information is SO much needed for our raza! Many young Mexicans born in Mexico have no idea of this type of information. For instance, myself. I didn't know about anything. Not even who Benito Juarez was. My mom never told me anything. I learned so much when I got deported to Mexico back in 2007 (I was 17 years old). At the time, I didn't realize that "bad experience" was disguised as a LIFE TIME opportunity of knowledge and identity. I learned so much about my culture, my roots, my family, and myself. I returned to the states about 9 years ago. Now, I pass my knowledge to my kids, so they don't grow up like me. What you guys are doing is AMAZING! It is very respected. I've seen your journey since you left Chicago. I always learn something new. So proud of you guys. Your journey will make a difference in others peoples life. Even though I was deported at age 17, I traveled a lot by myself in Mexico. It was the scariest and yet the most powerful journey of my life. I love seeing you two doing this together. ❤️ Sending much love.

Wow, this was a great video! So interesting to see that that region of the country has had such a long history of succession and self autonomy from Mexico. This can be seen today in fact, it appears that this history plays well into present day Chiapas, in which there are many communities in the Lacondon Jungle and surrounding areas that are autonomous. It appears that their history had great influence in the formation of the Ejercito Zapatista De Liberacion Nacional, and that their struggles and difficulties had been many years in the making. So interesting to see this video, I love the lessons you guys show on your channel! :)

I’ve watch quite a few of your videos and every time I see one it makes me want to go to that specific place and this on in particular. I’m Mexican American and my husband is from Guatemala so the history of Chapas makes it a lot more interesting for me. I would like to one day take our daughter there so experience a little of both her cultures.

Interesting and very informative video. I have been wanting to visit San Cristobal/ Chiapas for several years. Always gone to other areas of Mexico instead. I have read many different reviews of problems and issues with the indigenous people, especially when tourists try to visit Palenque. Have you visited Palenque? I understand that now, you can fly directly to a recently opened airport. If we decided to go, we would definitely use a local tour agency to take us there. Would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks again for sharing the video and the great info.
the issues in the indigenous populations are complex, but in a nutshell, we have heard that they've been known to target tourist buses (blocking them on the roads) as a form of protest and to get the government's attention to meet their basic needs for resources and infrastructure... it appears that the government cares more about catering to tourists than to their indigenous communities, but that's just one version of the story that we heard. There are others that are less empathetic. We didn't see any of this nor did we ever feel like the indigenous were unfriendly so I'm only sharing a perspective based on word of mouth.

I would like your advice(s) Jenny and Kevin! ... what cities in Mexico would you recommend for my family of 2 boys ages 6 & 7 yrs old? I have 3 in mind; Chipilo-Puebla, Queretaro, and Merida, ah possibly San Cristobal. Should you recommend any others is appreciated too! ❤ We live just 30 minutes north of Detroit. We don't want too much touristy places or too country. However, I do like Centro cities bit nothing like Puerto Vallarta! I want my family to be emersed into the Mexican culture so to speak! Hello 😊 we haven’t been to Puebla, but the first one that comes to mind here is the city of Queretaro and Orizaba, Veracruz. These two have been the most family-friendly of the cities and towns we’ve enjoyed in Mexico thus far. Orizaba has a super cool dinosaur 🦕 park, great coffee, hiking, and gorgeous Mountain View’s. Just keep an eye on the weather depending on the time of year you go as winter can be quite chilly due to the high altitude. And when it’s warm definitely visit the Ojo de Agua it’s like a natural water park. We have a couple videos on Orizaba on our channel, check them out! San Cristobal de las Casas I think you would also love.
Chiapas is also home to Los Zapatistas (EZLN), an indigenous group that's currently in rebellion. It's definitely an interesting state.
Yes, we didn't get to learn about them much but next time for sure we will dig deeper into other topics.

is it easy to get to day tours like el chiflón from san cristobal?

Yes there are plenty of tours sold in the center of SanCris. We took public transportation to Chiflon because we wanted to spend time there.
What's the year long weather like? Humid?
We were only there the month of April and it wasn’t humid. In Mexico the spring and summer tend to be humid so I’d say humidity here is relatively low

How is bicycling around S. CHRIS?
The streets are very narrow but I think bicycling might be better than their sidewalks.
I visited San Cristobal for an art workshop in 2018 and again last October for 2 weeks during Dia de Muertos celebrations. I adore Chiapas! Incidentally my amiga who went with me last year is vegan and had no trouble finding good vegan food in San Cristobal. Unfortunately we missed Steps as it was closed when we tried to go. Next time! The artisan market and the museums are awesome. We shopped A LOT! The indigenous cultures are so fascinating--we had the opportunity to go to some nearby villages. Also highly recommend the free walking tour that leaves from the plaza in front of the church twice a day and takes a couple of hours. You see and learn so much.

Cool history lesson. In your time in Mexico have you had an experience with the dichotomy that exists between the way in which Mexico/Mexicans touts the richness of its indigenous history and culture and the underlying sense of racism/bigotry against the indigenous people that currently live there today?
This is a great question! We haven't had much experience with that but one thing we did notice in San Cristobal was how our tour guide seemed to have a negative view of the indigenous people while telling us about the town's rich history... He'd say how they take advantage of the government and that they choose to "appear poor" when in reality they have "a lot of money" thanks to government benefits so they "have little incentive to pursue an education". Our tour guide was a college student, for context, and we were very aware that the way he talked about them was more likely rooted in bigotry than in accuracy, but aside from that I don't have other examples
Nice info on San Cris, what a shame there were political factions way back, hasn't changed much for Mexico or the U.S.

En realidad Chiapas nunca perteneció a Guatemala como país independiente, sino que formo parte de la Audiencia española de Guatemala, dependiente administrativamente de la Ciudad de México, en 1821 cuando México alcanza la independencia los países de la ahora Centroamérica se independizan con México y después cada provincia vota su separación de México, formando los países actuales excepto Panamá que era de Colombia, pero la población y las autoridades de Chiapas votaron por la anexión o unión a México, eso de que fue de Guatemala fue una idea del dictador guatemalteco Justo Rufino Barrios que quiso formar un solo país centroamericano con el apoyo de USA, de hecho duro muy poco ese país, se dividió en los países actuales.
En realidad la Capitanía General de Guatemala , perteneció al Virreinato de Nueva España , pero de forma nominal (buscar en el diccionario el significado de nominal). Pero en la realidad el virrey no tenía poder en la Capitania de Guatemala porque era una Capitanía con Audiencia Real Pretorial , lo que significaba , en otras palabras, no subordinada al virrey , como si lo eran otras Capitanias pertenecientes al Virreinato de Nueva España, ni tampoco era una Capitanía General Virreinal, como lo eran el resto de Capitanías de la Nueva España.
First spanish settlement was Chiapa de Corzo, then the Spaniards didn't like the weather and founded San Cristobal

First , from 1542 to 1783 Belong to la Capitanía General de Guatemala and after, dron 1784 to 1822 belong to la provincia of Guatemala , as la Intendencia, with autonomous goverment.

We did.. we didn’t sanitize our veggies properly and got super sick from that 🥴 just gotta take the right precautions!

Chiapas has never belonged to Guatemala. When Mexico was La Nueva España Guatemala which belonged to La Nueva España was a “capitanía”, meaning it had an authority given by the central power in what today is Mexico City, and Chiapas was under the jurisdiction of the authority in what today is Guatemala. When Guatemala wanted to leave Mexico (LaNueva España) also wanted to take Chiapas, but Chiapas had always belonged to La Nueva España, so, Chiapas refused to go with Guatemala.
