If you could say everything is god. Is because everything is made from energy. Energy can take any form, there for is perfect. It can exist and not exist. Now I don't feel so Lone anymore.

NEPTUNE117 I've believed this for as long as I can remember! I strongly believe that energy is what our bodies are mostly made of. And with that energy it get reborn. (sorry for my lack of religious vocab lol not too religious myself until now.)

I've called myself an atheist so long, trying complexly to explain how my views of the universe wasn't so 'dead' as most people in the atheist community make it seem. I've called myself a atheist-agnostic-deist, not knowing there was a type of thinking that directly correlates to how I feel about existence and the universe! Wow thanks for your enlightenment! :)

I believe that everything is connected. “God” isn’t a singular entity but instead we are all a slice of the pie. But we all live under the same roof. So in a sense we are all gods. Because no one else views reality exactly as we see it.

seven secular sultans how can god be everything

    • @weatherkop
      @weatherkop 7 лет назад +7

Okay now, look at your question, now look at your concept of what god is. God is not separate from nor is it even more extraordinary than the universe itself. God is reality; itself and our ability to perceive it, matter and anti-matter. All the goings on in the universe at once is god, good and bad. God isn't a comic book character hanging out on earth watching our backs. Have you ever done LSD? It would give a glimpse in the essence of what god is. Psychedelics replicate the experience of when we die. And when your ego is melting away, Nothing's going to matter except the pure truth of our existence. It's not wrong or right, it just is what it is.

    • @weatherkop
      @weatherkop 7 лет назад +3

I totally believe that concept. From a grain of sand to a supernova, all is what is. It gets all poetic sounding but thats what happens anyway when people talk about spirituality/totallity or the essence of being. I think that is where poetry, art, music and the like all come from. Its language about existence.

Its strange how I've sat in an ill fitting position in the atheist camp because I never knew of Pantheism. Once I read what Pantheism meant I instantly felt comfortable as its what I believe the universe to consist of that all is divine.
Thanks for helping me further understand :)

    •  10 лет назад +9

I just wanted to take a moment and thank you for taking the time to share your perspective and journey with viewers. I've been, let's say, a spiritual seeker for going on 15 years now and I was beyond thrilled and amazed when I first watched this video because your approach is a spot-on match to just about everything I believe but struggled with wanting (and being unable to) label. Nothing fit exactly.
Taoism was a strong influence but not a match. Druidry came so close, but there was always just a bit too much of a literal focus on gods and goddesses that chafed. And I was also more than a little uncomfortable with the strong Celtic association, feeling that, as an American, it was edging too close to cultural appropriation. Your practice and philosophy feel like a custom-fit for me, so to have stumbled across such a wealth of information as you provide on your channel is a gift. I really think this will help me take steps to build my own spiritual path and be comfortable with it. Again, thank you so much for your generosity in sharing with others!

After years of heavy psychedelic use, I am most certainly a pantheist, where the term "god" relates to a higher intelligence that lies beyond this illusory reality that looks deceptively solid. God is not a separate being altogether, but we are all god, all plants, animals, rocks, planets, and universe. I believe the idea of self and other is an illusion, and death isn't real.
As the great Bill Hicks once said...“Today a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively. There is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves. Here's Tom with the Weather"

Well done and interesting. I consider myself a pantheist but I haven’t read a great deal on what others are thinking about it, so this was interesting.
However, there is an alternative to choosing between the ‘everything is consciousness’ camp or the ‘everything is matter’ camp.
There is the ‘everything is context’ camp which denies that an entity has any substance apart from it’s context at all.
Subject/object or ‘matter/spirit’ are derived from context.
What is ‘consciousness/subject’ in one context can be ‘matter/object’ in another.
Every entity is composed of infinite context--beginning with it’s immediate context which completely determines it--but which, in turn, is composed of it’s own larger context--which also has a context---into infinity.
We as humans are the larger context for infinite number of smaller contexts--and are also embedded in infinitely larger contexts. Like infinite layers of an onion. Each layer is completely unique--but it’s uniqueness consists completely in its position in the whole. Every entity is what it is precisely because the whole is what it is. One shift in one context changes not only the whole but every context in the whole.
A person could think like this and be an atheist and refer to what I am calling ‘the whole’ as a dead universe. But I am unable to do this because I experience reverence, gratitude, joy, love and hold these experiences sacred. These are my responses to my existence. Our lives are constituted of such responses--they make up who we are. I accept those who say they are unable to respond to their lives in this way; but I maintain that I am able. I am response-able.
I did not make myself response-able---it is the universe which made me and gave me this ability to respond as I do. My response is an inherent potentiality in the existence given me by the universe; and this makes it an inherent potentiality of the universe itself. God lives in the reverence I give the universe, particularly the universe as it exists in my fellow humans, and it is the universe which made this so.

I'm a little hung up on why pantheism or monism can't be considered Personal? What does the word "personal" mean exactly in a monistic/pantheistic context? Let's suppose God is consciousness which is like a platonic value built into the universe. And out of its love it desired to understand humanities suffering and the only way it could do this would be to live as a human, e.g. immaculate conception or Jesus, providing us a way of understanding the universe, or God, and providing us a way to relate. This would seem to me to be a very personal God. Labeling monism/pantheism as non-personal seems to imply some negative connotations, I don't understand why these ism's are defined as "incompatible with personal".

Thank you for this beautifully succinct yet exquisitely detailed discussion. :) I've been thinking about this topic a lot lately. Ever since I fell out of the Christian faith I had been raised on pretty much since I was born and stopped going to church, I feel as though I've vacillated between hard atheism and a sort of soft pantheistic bent. More recently I've fallen back into pantheism and it really has evolved from a more materialistic view and more of what you might call a spiritual view. I've always been interested (admittedly pretty casually) in science, and I think that's more or less the seat of my particular experience of pantheism. Like all pantheists, like you say, the connectedness of all things and the mechanical order of the universe resonate with me and as Neil Degrasse Tyson points out there is something noble and moving and, dare I say, divine in the idea that we are a part of that and that it is within us and a part of us.
One thing that you said that stood out to me was the idea that everything is consciousness, because I've really become interested in panpsychism and in particular a related idea called hylopathism which is an argument espoused by philosophers such as David Chalmers among others that, in the simplest terms, whatever it is about the brain that causes consciousness to arise must necessarily to some degree be a part of all matter in the universe. In other words, consciousness itself is a fundamental feature of the universe and I tend to believe it might be _the most_ fundamental feature. And it is this fundamental, primordial feature that in some way exists in all matter that gives rise to our sense of self and our awareness of ourselves when all of the matter that makes us up and more importantly makes up our brains interacts and generates what I'm gonna call "conscious energy". In a way, I think we and all organic life is sort of an expression of the universe's awareness of itself, if that makes sense.
This comment was even more long winded than I imagined at first. I'm generally kind of guarded about my beliefs and philosophies, but this has been kind of absorbing my thoughts lately to the point where I'm more inclined to express them and this seemed like a good place to do that. :)

    •  7 лет назад

Yes, I think a concept such as hylopathism is what I was trying to get at in this video - I might make another video on this topic. Sometimes I fall more into the consciousness-arising-from-matter camp, but from my thinking and experience, this way of looking at it makes more intuitive sense. And I particularly like how it quite nicely complements my spiritual tendencies, pantheism, and even Buddhism. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, very interesting! I will definitely be doing more reading around this...

Very interesting to hear the two contrasting subdivisions of pantheism. I have questioned the label of pantheist before as I generally heard only the first description, but I see myself fitting more into the second view. I believe that although not in my opinion supernatural there is a spiritual side to the matter in the Universe and that we have souls that can briefly transcend the material world before being reincarnated. Not magick in the Wiccan sense but a kind of energy within nature that is beyond science.

I am monotheistic in that there is One Divine Source from which every thing in existence originated, polytheistic in that each 'god' is an archetype, fraction, pattern, facet, or aspect of the One Divine Source, and pantheistic in that every thing is One. A drop in the ocean, with this Divine Source being the totality of reality as a unit.

    • @KevinSolway
      @KevinSolway 10 лет назад

      "'everything is consciousness'"
I don't understand why you use the word "consciousness". I don't think a flower or a rock is conscious. What do you mean by "consciousness"?

    •  10 лет назад

      Kevin Solway
It depends on how you define consciousness. It's a rather difficult area to get into in the small space of a youtube comment! But essentially, it doesn't make sense to me that consciousness would spontaneously arise out of non-consciousness, because I believe that everything is one. If you consider that everything is conscious on some level - cells and even atoms are conscious - it makes sense that the more complex the organism, the more complex the level of consciousness. Hence, human self-consciousness. Cells and atoms respond to their environment, they behave in certain ways. You might call this instinct, and I don't necessarily think they're _self_-conscious, but surely that form of consciousness isn't that far removed from the kind of instinctive consciousness of a mammal like a cat or a mouse. Modern science is broadening its definition of consciousness all the time.
I don't think a flower or a rock have the kind of consciousness that we do, but I do think that on some level a flower knows it's a flower... it responds to its environment as an individual. At the very least, its cells are conscious. A rock does not respond to its environment, do I don't think of them as being individuals, but they are a collection of cells that do act as individuals.

    • @KevinSolway
      @KevinSolway 10 лет назад +1

Áine Órga "it doesn't make sense to me that consciousness would spontaneously arise out of non-consciousness"
I don't believe that anything ever happens "spontaneously" - things happen because they are caused to happen.
Things always arise out of what they are not. For example, the person I am right now has never existed before, and arose out of something that was different to itself (namely, the person I used to be).
I agree with you that everything is One, but I just don't see the justification for saying that all things are conscious, or that the Whole is conscious. The word "consciousness" has a particular meaning - an extremely valuable meaning - and according to that definition rocks or flowers do not meet the conditions of consciousness. If literally *everything* is conscious then it seems to me that the word "conscious" doesn't mean anything anymore, which would be a terrible loss to the language.
If we redefine "conscious" to mean "interacting with things" (usually without thinking and without awareness) then how is the All conscious? What does it interact with? I don't believe it can interact with anything, since there's nothing other than itself. Only the parts of the All can interact.
"Modern science is broadening its definition of consciousness all the time."
I think we should be going in the opposite direction, and narrowing the definition, rather than broadening it. For example, I would say that most of human behaviour (99% of it) is *unconscious*, or instinctual, rather than conscious, and that only enlightened/wise beings are truly conscious to any significant extent. For the most part we live on the same unthinking level as other animals. The daily news reminds me of this!
The dictionary defines consciousness as "awareness", or "having knowledge". I think that's a good definition, and there's no need to throw it away. Rocks and flowers certainly interact, but they are not aware, and don't have knowledge (that we know of). Not only are they not self-aware, but they're not aware of anything.
      "a flower knows it's a flower"
I don't think it does. "Knowing" is a very complex thing, requiring a complex organ like our brain, and flowers don't have this. The flower interacts with things, but it doesn't "know" that it is interacting.
"A rock does not respond to its environment"
Yes it does. All things respond to their environment. If the sun shines on a rock then the rock will heat up, and it will then radiate heat, warming up the things around it. It is on a very similar level to the flower.

This video was super helpful because I was just talking to my boyfriend about the divide between atheist pantheist and spiritual pantheist, but i didn't know how to describe it. You explained it perfectly. This divide has been making me uncomfortable, as I am now in a pantheist group where I see this conflict, and to me I think both ideas are valid and neither is superior. It is almost as if they are fighting over who gets to be a real pantheist, when they both are. Really it's just two groups of people coming to the same conclusion down different roads. Personally my journey to pantheism went both through a religious phase and an atheist phase.

There's no such thing as an "atheist pantheist", because pantheism is a subset of theism.

Pantheism can’t actually be proven because it’s axiomatic, just like free will and the validity of the senses: it’s the basis of proof. Will definitely stay tuned to your channel...this is SO liberating!! Thank you!!

Can't the gods of polytheism be the names for the various energies that flow through pantheism, which ultimately is 1 thing monotheism.
The problem I have with pantheist that think everything is matter, is, not everything is matter, sound for 1...
I've heard that pantheists don't believe in heaven either. I believe their is room for heaven in pantheism. The choices you make in life will still be affecting the universe after your death, continually. Quite simply, the way you influenced energy during your existence will always be influenced that way, your choices never die. The energy that was you is merely the energy of all you have witness, all that has happened before you, living on through you, to which that energy, frequency will live on through others. That energy is ultimately what we are and it never truly dies! unless of course the universe has oscillations of it's own existence.
The problem with many religions for me is they depict God and Heaven from a human perspective but we are more than flesh and bones, we are consciousness, energy realising itself and the universe through our senses. Now I'm just rambling the noise in my head. it's hard to find the words, the language to put forth what I feel.

From my observation, pantheism just came out of the self-transcendent experience that people can attain through meditation, etc. it's the perspective shift of feeling as though you're a separate discrete thing on the earth with an ego located behind your eyes to having the center drop out and realizing you are a part of everything. The differences among pantheists are somewhat irrelevant and mostly semantic...it's the same general realization.
It can sound like new age babble to some but neuroscientist Sam Harris talks a lot about this and how it relates to a accurate scientific view of the brain. He wrote a recent book promoting meditation.

I don't envy you having to explain this and put it into a digestible form. The universe is alive but what I perceive as the universe is merely an electron within a cell. What I'd call an electron in an entire universe unto it's own. The universe is alive and infinite. I avoided using the word "we" because the universe might also be entirely individualistic, based on one's own experience and perception of it.

I can certainly relate to the concepts of basic Pantheism. What broke me from holding onto theist or Christian loyalty was the death of my father. Though he was an extraordinary human, I couldn't accept the idea of him going to "heaven." It honestly felt like BS. What I believe is that his energy and atomic influence, was rejoined with the universe. And, since we are always exchanging atoms, I felt that his energy was left everywhere he went, and that the rest- after passing- is still being disbursed. So, it seems there is still a purpose to leading a good and balanced life- to leave positive energies or atomic influence for the universe... as opposed to a negative influence.
Not sure how this falls in line with Pantheism, but it's the closest I've seen, so far. Thanks for the video!

Hi Aine, I really like your comments especially on different fractions in Pantheists. I see myself very close to materialist-atheist Pantheists. What I see when I look at the human history is whenever humankind did not understand a physical object in nature or a concept in mind, they tend to give a deep, spiritual meaning to it. This is sometimes trees, sometimes the sun, sometimes the stars, sometimes other planets, sometimes big rocks, sometimes spirits, sometimes the Devil, sometimes the God, or sometimes the consciousness :P. The universe is VERY big, we still do not even have a clue about more than 90% of it, just say dark matter and dark energy for most part of it. But, having no clue does not mean the Universe is spiritual and we will have no clue about it for the rest of the time of our species.

I just got into learning Spinoza philosophy. I've always believed God is the totality of all things, all beings, and all natural processes, and includes all universes (if there are more than one), all history, present, and future, all dimensions and even imaginings, dreams, hallucinations, possibilities, and even nothingness. So, when I say God is the totality, I really mean the whole kit and caboodle. I think we ought to be careful about saying God isn't a person, because if God includes all people, which I believe it does, then you and I and everyone else is part of God. It's just that God isn't a separate, ideal person. Obviously, there is God, we see it all around us. I'm not keen on organized religion, but I love to know about new scientific discoveries and the theories of astrophysicists.

Hi Áine, thanks so much for explaining that. I have just discovered that I am a monist Pantheist. I believe that there is more to life than matter and I believe in String Theory to explain how we are all connected. All macroscopic matter, therefore, is separated by the differing vibrational frequencies of these "strings". And on a more local level I am a Druid who believes that we must work with the seasons and revere the planet and all its lifeforms.
As conscious evolving humanity we must come back to a communal relationship with the inhabitants of our planet, right down to the microorganisms in our own bodies. The earth is an organism, who I call Gaia, and we are its beneficial lifeforms whose population has become unbalanced in relation to the other lifeforms of our host - some might say parasitic. We, as a species, have lost sense of our symbiotic role in Gaia's health. We have lost our sense of the sacredness of all life which has led to an individualistic, egomaniacal worldview. It's sad and I hope as a Pantheist Druid I can challenge this destructive mindset in my work as a Mind-Body Wellness Coach. 😊

I don’t know of this is truly what i’m looking for so I will try to explain it the best I can.
I believe that every single religion is correct and that there are these gods/goddesses that exist. But I do not see them as the creators of everything, I believe that the universe is the creator of everything as well as those gods. The universe isn’t singular but multiversal, any story that you were fond of as a child exists somewhere in the multiverse, and we can only get a glimpse of it all in the stories we create. I believe that there is a being/beings that created everything, and I do not know what this is called, I don’t want to dismiss the existence of other gods from the different religions, but include them instead.

I love that you mention Taoism as pantheistic, and seekers should also note that it is also Animist, and esoteric in many ways. I think we'll see more "pagan" identifiers, discovering more of what the ancient philosophy of Taoism has to offer the West because it's literally already a nature religion with a positive world view.

So, pantheism either functions as a description of the god(s) through ones' concept of the cosmos, or as a description of the cosmos, through ones' concept of the god(s).
Being an inhabitant of the former camp already, you have me pondering the latter.
Part of my concept of a god is that they have a mind, meaning to me that they are caused by incoming stimulus to produce outgoing response.
For example, a bird sings outside your window, so unconsciously, you dispatch a smile to your face. The sun kisses the moon, so she winks at the earth.
The latter is a far simpler process, but reveals, in my opinion, some sort of mind, if only a simple one.
Because by definition of the cosmos, there is nothing other than the cosmos, it can only be stimulated by itself, and respond to itself, so if it bears any resemblance to any mindful creature at all, then it resembles one that is dreaming.
For a dreaming human, it seems, the unconscious mind plays the parts of stimulus and response, while the conscious mind incarnates as a person in between, but is that how mindful gods dream?
If the cosmos is the mind of a dreaming god, what else does that suggest about the cosmos?
My concept of a god is too vague to provide any answer to those questions.

I love your explanation of Pantheism. It is pretty friggin complex religion it sounds like! I am not very religious (until I found the power of believing in what I believe in now). I believe in Pantheism mostly because of the idea behind the belief in the universe, however I believe the universe is controlled by God. I don't know if this is more like another religion, but I also believe in Horoscopes (and similar things to that) as my faithful practice. I mainly believe this because I feel a sense of belonging to this practice and it very much helps me through my depression and other mental struggles. I felt every time I went/go to church I'm constantly being forced to believe in what God is saying, and when I did listen and follow it.... It just didn't make sense because my prayers have yet to be answered.... My body has not physically moved on from my trauma (I still get nightmares and I still remember disturbing moments from being bullied). But if I focus on what is said on my daily readings from my horoscopes, my mind will feel set on a path that will help me in the long run. Finally, I'll say this very simply, I know and don't believe these readings are the answer to all of my problems either daily or in the future.... I just think it's all part of God's plan for the universe.
    Wow that was long! 🤣

I suppose I'm one that ascribes to it being the polar opposite of atheism and I do see the universe as an organism that is experiencing itself through the consciousness that it contains. Yet at the same time I do very much so integrate my beliefs with science and I think that once it advances enough it will continue to line up with this concept more and more. There is already plenty of science that points towards it, especially within quantum mechanics.

Hello, I thought your description of pantheism was quite logical and really laid down the bare essence. I am, in many respects, a self proclaim science advocate, and as such, I am a bit reluctant to delve into religious territory. None the less, however, I have been wanting to find a philosophy which would not only allow for my scientific ideas to flow freely, but, also to align said philosophy with a traditional practice. After having experimented with many religious traditions ( both esoteric and mainstream) I believe islam to be an excellent way to express my beliefs in what is potentially monism. In your opinion, would you say this islam is a good fit for the philosophy of pantheism?

This was a really great video! Eloquently and succinctly summarised a basis for quite a wide range of pantheistic ideas. As a fellow pantheist I liked hearing about your take on it. I would say that I go up to the same point as you, as so far to say that I too believe in the divinity of the connectedness of all things and that everything is one, but i don't think i can say that i fall on your side of everything as consciousness or spirit. But i don't see it as just cold matter either. Maybe this is what you mean by consciousness, (i'd like to hear more about that). I kinda see it as an energy of sorts, and i simply feel the spirituality within the connectedness of this all encompassing divinity... but I'm not sure i can see the consciousness of it as a whole. But that's just my perspective :)
    Again, awesome video :)

    •  7 лет назад +1

Sorry that this comment slipped the net! I think I didn't express my thought on consciousness particularly well here, I'd like to make another video on that when I've thought it through enough. I guess I mean consciousness in a broader sense than we usually use the term. The conclusion I've come to on this through spiritual gnosis is interestingly reflected in some philosophical thought (though I'm not hugely familiar with that yet) - and this is that rather than explaining how consciousness/awareness can arise from unconscious matter, perhaps consciousness/awareness is the basic component of existence and it is simply expressed as matter, and in a self-reflexive way through the complex matter of human brains. Anyway, that's still all very half-baked, but might explain better where I was going with that. Thanks for your thoughts!

You sound like an Empath. Look it up. You aso sound like a young genius (no need to look that up). At age 12 I started to question religion, etc and was cast out. Best thing that ever happened. keep searching and realize that 99% of adults are lost and not that intelligent. Be prepared to be on a lonely path, great leaders don't have many friends.

What is it called when you're not religious or not practising, but believe that there is a god. (an intelligent supernatural being) Not in a "religious" kinda way.

Hi there! I don't think you need to believe in a god to be spiritual/religious. If you feel a connection to nature and other practices, and those things are meaningful to you, there's no particular need to attach any extra meaning to those experiences. Maybe try looking up spiritual atheism? Naturalistic pantheism or scientific pantheism are also labels that people who don't really believe in *god* use to describe how they feel about nature and the universe.

I've been calling myself agnostic atheist for a few years now and that's still accurate for me, but I didn't really agree with the same cynical way of thinking that a lot of atheists have. That's when I discovered that pantheism is a form of atheism and it fits my way of thinking so much better. I've always thought that everything is connected, that nature is one infinite system and we're all a part of it. I don't really think of the universe as a "god" or a person and I don't worship it, but I do think that it's important and bigger than what we could ever hope to understand. Consciousness is just another part of the big system. I was researching paganism and that's how I discovered this! I really love the culture of paganism as well and might become a pantheistic pagan. I love the idea of using mythology as a metaphor.

Would you describe the belief that “god” is a force that is responsible for the existence of everything and not a specific being that is in charge of everything (like some kind of administrator to everything) to be pantheism or would there be a different word to describe it?

Good video, I've been thinking about this a lot over the years and I think my philosophy could be accurately described as pantheistic, which is cool to know there's a community. I just have a thought on the two perspectives of pantheism noted around the 5 minute mark regarding those who believe all is matter and those who believe all is spirit. I think the mechanistic view is analogous to biologists, and the spirit analogous to physicists, in terms of the micro and macro views, but in all sharing the same view in a sense. I think matter in its own is a bit too rigid of a view because it fails to define the motion of matter, and vice versa for the spirit. Light is made of photons which can be called matter, but not the wave motion in which they travel in. Matter-view doesn't make sense of quantum entanglement and things such as that. So I think I've stated my point, hopefully fairly clearly. Please get back to me if there's further discussion to be had, in the case I missed something.

Hmm, interesting, I think you're right. As a monist, ultimately I see everything as being expressions of the same substance - and sometimes using these terms is misleading, as it suggests that I disregard other ways (i.e. material) of looking at the universe.
