The fact that Jia convinced him to help Godzilla since Kong would do anything for her, and as well he was intending to carry on the fight after they defeated Mechagodzilla.
But Godzilla chose not to fight since he found out that he mistook Kong for a villain all along, then Kong did the same.

I like how at the end when Godzilla starts to walk up to Kong and Kong gets up and ready to fight, but the expression on his face is like he doesn't want to do this anymore and just wants to go home.
I think his expression was hinting he was worried by Godzilla's powers but STILL willing to fight nonetheless. Everybody respects that kind of fight spirit

1: Most of the time the characters are very popular and if one were to kill the other then they loose a cash cow.
2: Having 2 characters that have serious beed with each put aside their differences to take down a foe neither of them alone could beat is a cliche, but a popular one and one that makes sense. Honestly the whole "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" thing is very impactful considering the beef Kong and Godzilla have.
First hinted at in the credits for Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla and Kong were born enemies; their ancestors fought an ancient war thousands of years before the events of the MonsterVerse films. According to what's shown in the Hollow Earth - the fact that Kong wields an axe made up of one of Godzilla's dorsal spikes and that there was a Godzilla-like shape in the throne room - it seems Kong's ancestors won their ancient war. That's perhaps why Godzilla's home was the underwater city and not the Hollow Earth, and why he already existed on the surface. Furthermore, the throne Kong sits on is one his ancestors must have sat upon as well, reigning over the monster kingdom.

With a little human intervention Kong Lives..... Godzilla Champ...... But without Kong and Godzilla working together plus a little human help Mechagozilla would have won. I don’t know why I laughed at this
The main problem I have with the ending is that it is rushed. The climactic battle between Godzilla and Kong was awesome and suspenseful. But the battle with Mecha-Godzilla was over in just a couple minutes with Kong doing the majority of the finishing moves. This goodbye was way too fast. It may seem very "Cartoony," but I think it would’ve been better like this: Godzilla and Kong have an awesome final battle with Mecha-Godzilla like Cap & Bucky vs. Iron Man. After defeating the robot, there is a moment of processing for the both of them. Godzilla and Kong slowly walk towards each other with angry looks which then switch to content. After looking each other in the eyes for a couple seconds, Kong then drops his weapon and extends his hand to Godzilla. Godzilla looks bewildered at first, but then accepts the handshake. They both give each other a nod of approval, thus agreeing to co-exist. Kong then goes to find his human friends while Godzilla dives into the ocean. The End.

This is only somewhat correct, as the director came out and essentially admitted if Godzilla hadn't exhausted himself and his atomic breath fighting Kong, he would be capable of taking MechaGodzilla 1 on 1.
During Big G's last fight with Kong i think he gained respect for Kong for not backin down even in defeat, even more so gained after the fight with mecha G, in short, best frenemies

I think they did a fantastic job with this movie. Man do they really hit the mark on making you feel for Kong. Was not expecting MechaGodzilla in the movie, and no i never seen the trailer so it was an awesome surprise.

Just pointing out: Kong was never hit with any concussive blast, missile, or laser beam. Godzilla can definitely tank those, but if MechaGodzilla wasn't so adamant of hard-targetting Godzilla and shot a few things other than his tail at Kong, the fight could've turned out a lot differently.......
Thats because mechagodzilla (aka ghidorah) never saw kong as a threat and only started taking him seriously when he saw godzilla charging his axe.
Kong was hit by missiles in Kong Skull Island.
MechaGodzilla did swipe kong with his tail twice and kick him with a concussive blast right in the chest. Mind you kong just got back from Death and still was performing better against MechaGodzilla than Godzilla.
Kong didnt got hit by his beams but he did get hit by his blasts and tail. And also like astro stated an adolescent kong could take missiles so i don't see why a fully grown one could not
Graphic novel 'Kingdom Kong ' states that kong is able to tank a WHOLE SUPERSTORM made by ghidorah himself! with air pressure over 400! The storm was so strong it desimated skull islands entire ecosystem. Not to mention kong fought Camazotz a titan that could swallow the earth in darkness and cause storms and typhoons. He can also Create Earthquakes that could shake skullisland just by coming through a transition from the hollow earth to the real world. So please tell me......

Probably the best film out of the 4 recent Godzilla movies. I always wanted Godzilla to win but you have to respect Kong. The big guy has always been a survivor and the fact he wouldn't submit to Godzilla after a savage beating was pretty badass. Its a shame there weren't more titans in this film but hopefully if there is a fourth, perhaps more titans could get involved.

This is the best movie final battle during the COVID-19 pandemic. Godzilla and King Kong made an amazing team and it’s all because of a little girl who is true hero of the story. Mechagodzilla reminded me of the evil robotic version of Reptar from the Rugrats episode, Runaway Reptar.
