  • On July 4th 1919, he and world heavyweight champion Jess Willard met at Toledo, Ohio, for the world title. Minutes before the fight started, Kearns informed Dempsey that he had wagered Dempsey's share of the purse on Dempsey winning with a first-round knockout. As a result, the first round of the fight was one of the most brutal in boxing history. Dempsey dealt Willard a terrible beating and knocked him down seven times in the first round. Willard had a broken cheekbone, broken jaw, several teeth knocked out, partial hearing loss in one ear, and broken ribs.

    I have to give credit to Willard. With that first knockdown punch, Willard's jaw was shattered. Yet he got up, and lasted until the fourth round, taking heavy punishment the whole time.

    From Toledo, I know that this fight took place just north of the downtown on the west shore of the Maumee River -- near present Bay View Park. The father of a guy I used to play handball with lived in the nearby neighborhood where the fight took place. As a 12-year-old, he was in the vicinity that day and remembered the fight. It was indeed a *very* hot July 4,1919, and the newly-erected pine stands were actually "sweating" sap. Yes, drinking water was at a premium!

      So am I, but Jess was able to defend himself despite getting fucking battered for 10 minutes. It would be hard, because I would be concerned for Willard's safety but I wouldn't want to stop such an amazing fucking display.

    0:28, 0:32, 0:47 Dempsey landed three hard straight right hands directly into Willard's midsection before scoring the knockdown. Willard got hit flush, every time. Gave no angles, used no movement. Just a huge target. Willard was not warmed up, and he tumbled over when Dempsey followed up with blows upstairs.

  • @giulioluzzardi7632
    @giulioluzzardi7632 2 года назад +1

    Dempsey must have freaked his opponents out. He re-invented the moves to suit him, the contenders had no-chance as they were trained to fight "Queensberry" style. What a champ, it was as though he was the only one with the "Know-how". The poor opponent was almost a punchbag to Dempsey. Make your own rules to win.

    Have watched this fight so many times. I would have to agree with many that JD had loaded gloves. Some old fighters talked about how some resorted to this method when they needed to win. The substance was put in their gloves and as time went on, the substance hardened. JD's punches never did that to anyone else. Plus, JD bet on the fight; tells me he knew he couldn't loose. And if not for the fact that Jess was as tough as nails, the fight would have been over much sooner. It has also been stated that JD's handlers got rid of the gloves right after the fight. No evidence, no proof.
