Jack Dempsey vs Jess Willard - 1st Round TKO

- On July 4th 1919, he and world heavyweight champion Jess Willard met at Toledo, Ohio, for the world title. Minutes before the fight started, Kearns informed Dempsey that he had wagered Dempsey's share of the purse on Dempsey winning with a first-round knockout. As a result, the first round of the fight was one of the most brutal in boxing history. Dempsey dealt Willard a terrible beating and knocked him down seven times in the first round. Willard had a broken cheekbone, broken jaw, several teeth knocked out, partial hearing loss in one ear, and broken ribs.
I have to give credit to Willard. With that first knockdown punch, Willard's jaw was shattered. Yet he got up, and lasted until the fourth round, taking heavy punishment the whole time.
Little man destroyed the BIG MAN! Love the little mans low shots!
100 years ago today. I will never forget this memorable fight.
That was a 10-2 round.
nsr60ster lol
wow, talk about brutal.
Hard Times breed hard men
- Jack Dempsey
Willard and Dempsey lasted a good long time, and both were lucid all of their lives. Amazing.
man, these were the days.
can you imagine how many times this fight would have been 'stopped' already if they were fighting in this era?
From Toledo, I know that this fight took place just north of the downtown on the west shore of the Maumee River -- near present Bay View Park. The father of a guy I used to play handball with lived in the nearby neighborhood where the fight took place. As a 12-year-old, he was in the vicinity that day and remembered the fight. It was indeed a *very* hot July 4,1919, and the newly-erected pine stands were actually "sweating" sap. Yes, drinking water was at a premium!
That is when they got the term HOLY TOLEDO.
I am surprised the ref let them keep fughting.
So am I, but Jess was able to defend himself despite getting fucking battered for 10 minutes. It would be hard, because I would be concerned for Willard's safety but I wouldn't want to stop such an amazing fucking display.
1919 isn't 2019, my friend. The sport has drastically "civilized" over the last 150 years or so.
It wasn't a first round KO.... The fight was stopped after the third round.....
The round was stopped early when Willard was on the canvas. It was supposed to be a 1st round KO
Lord Legender, The result is what it is. Lying only misinforms people. Nobody can erase the 6 extra minutes of fighting that happened in reality because of what “should’ve happened”
In a modern fight that would be a first round KO
Didn't this fight go on for several more rounds
This man will is what lunatics used for proof of Jack would beat way more advanced hws in 70s-90s
Where are the car brakes and jet engine sound during the dempsey roll?
giving me shivers just thinking about it lol
In your heart.
0:47 is what you're looking for.
*THE DEMPSY ROLL*
Evanhairgelion lel
Dempsey
i wonder how dempsey had of gone against jack johnson
The rules were brutal at that time. A fallen boxer is hardly given a chance to get up before being hit agian, no nuetral corner, etc.
Heh. Boxing without the neutral corner rule sure is fun.
wat the hell he aint even standing up yet n the ref lest him carry on smashin his face in lmao
Curtis Wilson
I know right
awsome.
It's not the size of the dog in the fight it''s the size of the fight in the dog.
1 person got dempsey rolled
No women boxing back then
Wow he took two more rounds of that mess.....
110 degrees, and now they're talking about "unprecedented" climate change.
Ha...right!
What a beating.
0:28, 0:32, 0:47 Dempsey landed three hard straight right hands directly into Willard's midsection before scoring the knockdown. Willard got hit flush, every time. Gave no angles, used no movement. Just a huge target. Willard was not warmed up, and he tumbled over when Dempsey followed up with blows upstairs.
Dempsey must have freaked his opponents out. He re-invented the moves to suit him, the contenders had no-chance as they were trained to fight "Queensberry" style. What a champ, it was as though he was the only one with the "Know-how". The poor opponent was almost a punchbag to Dempsey. Make your own rules to win.
Dempsey fue el creador del boxeo moderno .
haha, really?! That was just brutal
i came here from Kenji Manga Comic. very accurate Manga! 😍
The title of this video is incorrect. Willard did not come out for the fifth round, so how is this a first-round TKO.
Havn't seen this since the 70's
Sam Frazier vs Foreman 1?
THE MOST BARBARIC AND SAVAGE FIGHT IN HISTORY...and utter MASSACRE
Wrong
im here because of dave allen vs dave price tomorrow
1st round TKO? the fight ended in the fourth.
conan would run after getting up first time . literally crawl out and beg forgiveness from grom.
Wow..way different then now. No mercy....take no survivors. Jack Dempsey once trained near my home for a short time. Place called coal city near price. Left all his stuff there and never came back.
I can listen in the multitude people shouting..in my language spanish."Dale Dale dale....go ahead ..go ahead ..at minute 1-32
Dempsy roll
Dempsey was a KILLER in the ring....ONE OF THE GREATEST FIGHTERS OF ALL TIME!!!
He cheated in this fight
Sad that he lost the bet.
First round my ass. People have some weird adoration for Dempsey and will literally tell lies to make him seem greater than he was.
Your ass has had a lot of 'rounds'.

@@TheBatugan77, It’s called a record book. Might do you some good to open one.
Somebody who watched full matches, this looks horrible lunatics for years have said jack could beat people in 70s-90s,yet the average fighter in those years was way more advanced than this whole novice era
@@TheBatugan77g
Lunatic truth hurts
27k damn
The most devastating 4-punch combination in the history of boxing. Interesting that he led with the right hand. The left hook that put Willard down was one of the best ever.
You must never seen other era's
Not much sweet science in this one.
Dar1966 nah its there still lol

where's howard cosell?
Tom Greg u funny as hell
smaller man won won,great,well done
Too much clinching allowed
I would clinch too if I got bulldozed by Jack Dempsey
But, Dempsey use the clinch to his favor, not because he was tired... it was a smart strategy for such a tall guy with that arm reach.
Kinda reminds me of Jake Lamotta
No standing eight count...
Not a 1ST ROUND TKO
Infame era
Dempsey' s punches had a devastating effect in this fight, in his subsequent fights even though he won until Gene Tunney became champion they did not seem so intimidating or damaging. Had gumshields been introduced?
110 degrees? global warming? ; )
They had to change it to climate change! Haha
@@lesmcc8103 it used to be global cooling

willard is good tho he kept coming back up
dempsey is too much
if you like film studies/ breakdowns of the old school fighters like Dempsey, go to my page.. I have a full analysis of Dempsey's career skills
cant believe dempsey was hitting Willard b4 he gets up properly.
The fight would of ended sooner or dempsey would of been disqualified in todays sport.
that was jess willards 2nd profesional fight. he was an ex circus strongman.
With a record of 24-6-2?
jack got no footwork. i mean jess
This man will is what lunatics used for proof of Jack would beat way more advanced hws in 70s-90s
Crazy Idiot's on forums used this match as proof dempsey would beat guys in 70s-90s,yet no one made pro fighting like these novice like fighters in those era's
The only trouble is Tyson Fury apart from being even bigger than Jess Williard was infinitely better.

Please explain.
@@ArchieFatcackie is it a thought fury is way better or do you see him as for a fact way more advanced?
jess is just a tank his base game is taking punches and hoping he hits something
@Oliver Samways
He was a big farmboy who technicaly started his pro carrer 29-30yo; he was said to be 37yo here with over 30 bouts. He still was a poor champ who basicaly relied on size, power, and heart.
Jess Willard knocked out Jack Johnson,
not even a minute in he broke his jaw. who is on his level today ?
Mutiple people in 70s-90s who had way better tech and didn't have to hit a person this many times clean just to stop them let alone KO
marcxopoco Johnson let Willard win in a deal to be allowed back in America.. Hes laid down sheilding his eyes from the sun.. Didnt know Dempsey had his purse on the first round though..
Dempsey had loaded wraps.
jack got no footwork.
Have watched this fight so many times. I would have to agree with many that JD had loaded gloves. Some old fighters talked about how some resorted to this method when they needed to win. The substance was put in their gloves and as time went on, the substance hardened. JD's punches never did that to anyone else. Plus, JD bet on the fight; tells me he knew he couldn't loose. And if not for the fact that Jess was as tough as nails, the fight would have been over much sooner. It has also been stated that JD's handlers got rid of the gloves right after the fight. No evidence, no proof.
Nonsense
