- Many consider Ken Buchanan to be the best boxer ever to come out of Scotland. In this fight we see Buchanan beat former 3 time world champion Carlos Ortiz by a knockout in the sixth round.
Also Carlos Ortiz was a good fighter from my native Puerto Rico. He also was ans still is a legend just like Ken Buchanan RIP for both legend 🥊
Such a great fighter and World Champion, Ken Buchanan has always been a landmark in my own, and so many other fight fans journey through British (And Scottish) Champions of the World.
I talk to Ken every other Sunday about his life, such a nice guy very humble, always happy to talk to people about his life, and what I consider his amazing achievements,a true gentleman.
He's was a great boxing champion, tell him he has fans in the USA who haven't forgotten.
@@pimpompoom93726 I will pass along your kind comment
@@4fulryan Thank you!
A true great who should have received more respect
Ken was in the same care home as my dad in Leith Edinburgh,I can say that he was looked after very well, and I'd often speak to him for ages about his career,he most of the time would wear his black hat and walk around the care home saying hello to people, always kind, always polite, not once did I ever hear him swear or complain,he really was every bit a champion inside the ring and out, really sad about his passing,I will really mass his company when I go visit my dad.
RIP Ken Great Scottish boxer
He must have been one of the first British boxers to win a title of any kind outside the UK Let alone a World title Remarkable achievement!
@Ralph Reilly Apart from Ted Kid Lewis & Bob Fritzsimons who else wine a title overseas?
@@georgebisacre9413Ricky Hatton & Joe Calzaghe both won belts in U.S.A.
What a beautiful boxer Ken was, RIP, legend.
Always enjoyed watching Kenny box, he had great boxer skills and power to boot.
Allow me to put in a word on behalf of Carlos Ortiz, a very fine all-around fighter, genuine lightweight champion at a time when there was only one, and a good man to boot. Sad to see him have to end like this, but no one goes on forever.
No question about Carlos Ortiz abilities or achievements!
Ortiz' trainer not at all happy that his man decided to surrender on his stool. But Ortiz realized that at 37, he had no answers against the smooth boxing Buchanan.
Great champion buchanan
Two Hall of Famer, they are two of the ten best lightweigh of all time!
Indeed
Nahh Buchanan is not in the top 10, while one can argue Ortiz being in the top 5
Carlos Ortiz was the best dresser of all our New York fighters. EVERY story about him contained the word DAPPER! I hung out in a club he owned.
Good boxer, good ambassador...i think it was a shame the fight with Duran ended with low blows because...i'm not saying Buchannan would have beaten him...but he was hitting the spot...a lot...until he got hit in the nuts
Agreed. Should have had a rematch to settle things once and for all.
If the fight had been in the UK Ken might well have kept his title on disqualification Would that have been justice or not?
He was miles behind on points to be fair , maybe yes he deserved a re match … one thing I would say is that it’s out of him and Joe Calzaghe as the best British boxer ever .
RIP Legend
Buchanan moved well on his feet. He was a big star until he ran into Roberto Duran.
THANK YOU REF FOR DOING YOUR JOB,"Of Separating" when they try to take the shortest of "naps" lol. Now look at Buchanan vs Roberta Duran, as he lets Duran hang onto Buchanan after each round's burst of energy from Duran. Not Right, Not Fair
Prince wouldn't have stood a chance against Buchanan, Duran said Buchanan was his hardest fight a couple of months ago...Prince was light years away from these guys, They could punch and had granite chins.
Ortiz from Ponce, my hometown. He fought Panama’s Laguna as well.
didnt buchanan beat laguna twice, durans idol.
Yes.
The fight was in Lagunas hometown aswell Puerto Rico.ken beat him in 110 degree heat,a little hotter than Edinbrugh
Ken fighting for the World lightweight title was remarkable in itself Apparently he and his Manager dropped into promoter Jack Solomons office in London to be greeted with “ right you miserable Scott Do you want to fight for the world title” Apparently Solomons had been asked by Laguna”s manager for a suitable “safe” lightweight for him to defend his title against in PR Ken was a ranked contender but but really had everything against him Just lucky the fight was in PR, not Panama Fortune favours the brave!
I’m my opinion Ortiz was better than Gómez, Trinidad, Laporte and Camacho, Benitez gets the nod for greatness because he is the youngest champion in boxing ever at 17 years old but Ortiz was a bull and had a great chin unlike Jose Torres.!
R.I.P. Jim.
El "no mas" de Carlos Ortiz.
Big win!!!
R.i.p Ken.
Ken set a fantastic pace and this broke Ortiz...
By this time Carlos Ortiz was a old man
36 is not old, pacquiao just beat 30 year old undefeated champion Keith Thurman aged 40. Ortiz had no answer to Buchanan in this fight.
@@peterthe3rdbanks287 36 is old.
and his opponent 9 years younger makes a big difference.
@@peterthe3rdbanks287 different times. At this age he had over 60 fights in him. Slugfests of 15 rounds, gloves were less padded., and no steroids...no comparison with today
@@juliocesartorresgonzalez7222 fair comment although Carlos monzon retired aged 37 with a win is his 99 pro fight, he didn't take steroids and smoked 20 cigarettes a day..
But I kinda agree with what you said.
Ortiz had been a great boxer himself winning world championships at different weights but in 1972 what was he 36, 37 and Ken Buchanan in his prime meant this was a one sided contest.
In what way was that a knockout
Duran beat ken because he hit him in the balls.
That's what stopped the fight. But Duran was far ahead on the scorecards going into the 13th round. He was a masterful brawler that night.
@@richardweiler3966 Irelevant that he was ahead on points, thanks to that idiot Magoo the ref in Durans favour he wast warned about his headbutts and wasnt disqualified
@@brianmorecombe2726 Buchanan had no chance. We all know how great a fighter Duran turned out to be. No matter what, Roberto Duran was going to convincingly dethrone Ken Buchanan that night. All the little controversies are just smokescreens that try to hide Duran's superiority. Buchanan was a hell of a fighter. But Duran was better. Maybe better than any lightweight who ever lived.
Ortiz past his prime at 36, Buchanan at his prime at 27 years old....
The time is undefeated
I can't think of a British fighter whose record is so full of champions and contenders as King Kenny's, unless you go way back to Jack kid Berg and Ted kid Lewis.
I've got a report from this fight in an old Ring magazine that stated Buchanan "was no ball of fire"
but he had enough fire to retire Ortiz and did the same with Ismael Laguna, another all time great.
I asked Ken how come he was undisputed Lightweight champion and got sod all recognition yet Henry Cooper gets knighted and princess ann was sports personality of the year ?
He didn't seem bothered and just shrugged his shoulders.
Then he said "I danced with her and she said she wanted tae fuck me"
If he isn't the greatest fighter this country has ever produced, he's at least in the top 5.
Beautiful boxer with a fast accurate left jab, great underrated body puncher, hurtful left hooker, granite chin, bottomless amounts of bottle and footwork like a ballet dancer and a master at fighting off the ropes.
Late on in his career he sparred with a young Barry McGuigan who appreciated the lessons he learned from the Scottish legend
RIP
Wonder who josh Taylor bases his style on
Therapy atentan legend Ken Buchanan the autobiography
No Mas!
What a load of shite Manuel. Ken was the better boxer. You don't have a career like his by being lucky...
Ortiz way past his prime here. Loved Buchanan but he wouldn’t have beaten prime Ortiz IMO
This one was a real "no more"
Carlos was Old on that's time.
Buchanan fought an old war worn fighter in Ortiz by this time not impressive. It was in fact his last fight. A prime Carlos Ortiz would have out boxed Buchanan without a shadow of a doubt.
shight! there was no OK
lol
At 36 his punching power and his hair are gone away Hahahaha so sad......
Neither one is top 10 All-time at LW, it's too stacked of a Division!
Rspene smit IDK about that guy but Ortiz is definitely top 10 lightweight of all time actually top 5 he lost some but would come back and win big ones and that's what goats do like ali would do and clearly Ortiz was old here and not the same fighter he was
Ortiz, not a top 10 at lightweight? LOL--go home; you don't know shit about boxing.
I'll bet you think Mayweather/Castillo/Mosley (etc.) rank higher, right? Again: go home.
Buchanan is a top 10 lightweight bro, and Duran is number 1,then Benny Leonard
Give us your top 10. These guys are pretty close to that list.
Thats why you are a boxing newb
