It’s the notorious N55 engine failure, biting another good customer in the butt unfortunately.
All it takes is a little time without oil pressure to those bearings and clank and shes locked.
It seems to always be the rod bearings toward the rear, mainly #5, this can be due to BMW’s simplification of the oil supply circuits within the engine.
Always prime the engine after any part of the oil circuit is opened, ie: Oil filter housings, the way to do this is simply disable the engine from starting up, by disabling ignition or fuel supply and cranking no less than 3 times, offer to replace the spark plugs too and while they are out it will crank fast and be easy on the rods due to having no compression to push against.
People have had luck with dropping the subframe and ghetto-fabulously chiseling the old bearing off the crankshaft, then using 400 grit and higher progressively to polish the journal back up and install a new bearing, do not temove a lot of metal! Check bearing clearance with plasiguage on reassembly
one guy even re-used his old oil pan gasket with rtv!!! I highly discourage doing this, always replace all bearings and gaskets at a minimum.
I really would recommend at minimum pulling the Engine, and then disassembly, with a thorough cleaning of the entire oil circuit.
I would also reccomend replacement of the connecting rod(s) (any showing signs of overheating or color change will be deformed)
All bottom end bearings should be replaced
Disassemble and inspect the oil pump for scoring (which will tell you it ingested metal flakes from the failed bearing and is sure to reduce its output, remember oil pressure is also used to power the vanos system)
Inspect for either machining or replacement of the crankshaft itself, because micro-cracking can begin to occur at the point where the affected journal joins the counterweight, which can eventually lead to a crankshaft failure at the least opportune time.
I would at minimum have a good machinist inspect and magnaflux it.
They may be able to cut it and you can buy oversized, or thicker bearings from BMW to save it, but the hardening will be removed from the surfaces of the crankshafts journals in the process.
Its always going to be a trade off at this point with this type of repair.
It can never be too clean when it comes to engine assembly.
Sorry if you felt like I was speaking a little bit fast in the video; However 60 seconds is difficult to pack this much information into, I finally got it done on about take 25.
For this reason I recommend watching it at least 45 times, 😜 for proper absorbtion to occur, thanks good patrons of RUclips!

I remember having a customer that told me the previous shop called it the starter after shutting off on the freeway. I’m trying to wrap my head around how he made that call. Lol
Exactly what I thought… I mean its right there in the parts name START-er 😂
😂😂😂😂
Did someone really say that????
"The Starter after shutting off on the freeway."

It's refreshing to see a diagnosis like this. Good work

Should’ve got a 94 Toyota Celica Scotty would say
Everything comes down to how people maintenance it. If everything is done right, nothing bad will happen.
it's definitely an acquired taste. I coulda bought a Honda and been super happy and done almost no work. but I bought a x1 35i and I absolutely love it and I can't wait to work on it and upgrade it here and there.. acquired taste
I agree, thanks for watching and talking the time to comment.
Rod bearings failure,; an easy thing to avoid. Don't drive above 3k rpm until the oil is at full operating temperature. I have 7 bmw's from 1981 model year up to a 2012 335i (N55 engine) which I make 600 whp and never had an issue. And I drive them all hard af.
Thanks for sharing your opinion, and also thanks for checking out the channel.
Unfortunately, the people who this stuff happens to really don’t even know what WHP stands for.
I'm sorry
@@BigDmike24 Whatchu drivin Mike?
Car is waaay too fussy
The earlier N55 did have a higher than normal number of rod bearing failures.
It has been said that some of the reasons include the variable output oil pump designed to save fuel by running the oil pressure dynamically, faulty oil pressure switch, plastic pick up break, long oil drain intervals, cheap internals (i.e cast crank vs forged internals in the older N54).
Whatever the reason, there are high mileage N55s running around still so the problems are likely not common but common enough to get people yelling on the Internet especially with a 7k engine replacement on a 20k used car.
I had a 92 525i 5 speed with a straight six men naturally expired. I did various mods to it and make it a little bit faster lowered it. And I beat the living snot out of it and I finally junked it with over 358,000 miles on it. Original motor original transmission original clutch. The owner before me however did to the heads which were known as an issue for those cars. That was when it had about 160,000 miles on it. I got it at 170,000. And everything I did until a certain point was upgrade and performance wise. Until it was getting too old to repair and costly then I just did OEM parts. Never ever had any issues with that straight six.
Thanks for watching and commenting
Well said, fantastic engine.
I have an 08 N54 and it has 300,000+ original miles. Bottom line is people do not pay enough attention to levels and oil service intervals. Do not drive 10,000 miles before you change your oil!!
Exactly correct, most cars today can make it to 300,000 its usually the owner who prevents that somehow.
I changed my oil on my 2011 n55 every 5 000 KILOMETERS not miles, and still spun a rod bearing at 134 000km…. Maintenance goes a long way, but these motors have bearing issues. All N54 & N55 will suffer a failure once pushing any power higher than stock , or if low on oil for any significant period of time
Scotty kilmer knows he is a mechanic genius. He didn't lie just the truth... some people and car manufacturers can't handle the truth.
@That V8 Life You buggin’ bro 🤪
@That V8 Life I know your right but, I felt the answer needed to be elaborated on….
By the way you failed to mention my channel for people who really fix cars, whats up with that? 😜 Rainman Ray get’s my vote though…
@That V8 Life No lol, I knew you meant Scotty, I have herd this before about him, just that people May attack you in the comments especially the older crowd for speaking negatively about him, so I wanted it to be clear as to why you hold that opinion
@That V8 Life Agreed 👍🏽
BMWs are known to be hot engines and burn oil very quickly, it is important that you change your oil on time or even before 5000mi, it's the most likely reason people have rod bearing failures over the oil slushing around, BMW engines are designed in Germany where they see cold weather more often.
Low tension piston rings
Failed CCV system
Improper oil change intervals or viscosity
All reasons for increased oil consumption
BMW simplified the oil system in these engines which also led to the known oil starvation issue with the rear bearings
Many people swap their thermostats for colder ones in bmws
@@andries4561on older models they sure did, but the newer ones with the electric water pump carry a thermostat which can be electronically controlled not sure if they sell those in colder ranges
Cold weather? More often? I dont think so.
I've owned an E60 BMW 525 I since I've owned it I've had one problem with it the oil filter housing gasket was leaking sorted it myself since then no problems I change the oil and filters every 4 months engine runs perfectly 90 thousand miles on the clock have owned it since 2016
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
i noticed a small crack in my oil filter housing gasket as well, doing an oil change today so i thought id just replace it at the same time
"driven too hard" BMW im shocked, didn't think such a thing was possible..
With low oil, definitely possible…thanks for watching, like and subscribe for more cool videos!
If a car dies because it was driver too hard, was it really designed correctly? xD I drive my 1991 maxima like a race car, cars are supposed to be driven, if I payed for the whole tachometer, im using it
Lack of maintenance, especially not monitoring oil level regularly causes this
18 year old was driving
Im willing to put money and bet that the owner didnt do regular oil change during its time. This failure/damage doesnt happen over night.
Bingo!
This BS should have been treated as a "recall" being that this issue was very common....
Customers responsibility to maintain oil level, if the driver is enough of a fool, then fool proof alone will never be enough
@JDM TECH LLC Valid rebuttal....makes sense
@@MechaniclifeJDM there’s nothing wrong with the level of oil if it’s being starved by sloshing around, that’s a failure of oil pan design without baffles
@@standyourground9973 it is a compound issue, low oil, worn oil, over revving, lack of baffling and driving style.
Also the fact that BMW simplified the oiling circuits within the engine
Bmw engines have Vanos. You need to drive these carefully until the oil is up to 60 degrees. 60 degrees is where the oil is of the correct viscosity to coat the moving parts sufficiently. Booting it before up to temperature causes starvation.
I've had BMWs & MINIs all my life, look after the car it'll look after you.
Why is this the case? Look at every BMW engine... In every size of engine, litre for litre they are significantly more powerful than most manufacturers.
Buy a Honda if you just wanna turn the key and go without care.
Everybody wants a BMW until its time to do BMW shit
Excellent point, thats why they sell used for so little, people run them until it has a moderately severe issue and then its either for sale or it becomes an expensive yard ornament
@@MechaniclifeJDM exactly, sounds great picking up a 10 year old BMW for 5k until you're repairing 100k+ of misuse in most cases.
Cars are the same as dogs, the owner is the issue most of the time😂😂
No need to wonder, Scotty is right as usual. He's had a lot of experience during his long career as a mechanic. He is always gives honest & valuable advice. He is a wealth of information.
Agreed and we love Scotty’s animated nature as well
Hi Jd
I am experiencing this issue with my N55 2011 x6 could you send me some info on how to do the rod bearing repair any help would be helpful. Thanks in advance.
Hi @jdmtechllc6589
do you know approximately what is the cost for this repair
Didn't the later n55 get updated?
How do you know it was “valve to piston “ ?? Or I guess my question is how do I know if the valves are hitting the pistons? (I’m currently in the process of taking my engine out it’s an N55 and the serpentine belt got In and I want to make sure that the pistons and valves are fine )
Did yours jump timing?
@@MechaniclifeJDM not that I’m aware of. Then again it does turn the full 360 degrees but sine some of the prices of the belt are in the little crevices of the chain it makes it difficult to know. Also I was asking because (took the engine out on Sunday) I have the timing chain tool because I’m going to take it off but I don’t want the timing chain to move so I want to know everything is ok before I proceed
Scotty never been wrong time for a new design before people stop buying altogether.
Scotty only said the e36 are reliable
The problem with bmw is that people who buy them don’t maintain them properly.
That is correct 👍🏽
You know Scotty is right money pit 😂
He definitely is ...
Scotty is partially wrong. BMW's 4 cyl and v8 engines aren't the most reliable. Bmw inline 6 engines like this n55 are very reliable when well maintained. If you can't afford maintenance and repairs for a luxury car, don't buy it until you have the money. Also, this youtuber claimed that the driver was 18 years old and didn't do regular oil and filter changes. What experience does an 18 year old have for driving and taking care of this car? I've seen many n55s above 200k miles and a few above 300k miles. Besides, they're all pre-owned. You don't know how well the previous owners took care of the car.
I'm a 2015 n55 owner with 200k miles. A 2016 B58 owner with 100k miles. Also, a 2016 s55 with 213k miles. I've been the first owner for all cars and took care of them well.
N55, 208k
N62, 183k
My previous X5 had the M54 inline 6 with 265k sad to say but she died a horrible death but it was my fault directly😞
Maintenance is definitely the key.
@@MechaniclifeJDMIt's alright dude. You cherished some good miles! 👍
@@MechaniclifeJDMBtw, did you experience any oil leaks? Not talking about the v8 but the n55.
@@lorenzo9036Just the valve cover gasket, replaced the whole cover a while ago.
You absolutely have to change oil every 3000 to 5000 miles if your driving hard! My car is down a quart in 5000 miles!
You are absolutely right, with that in mind how about Audi’s specifications? They said that the A4 could consume 1 quart in 1000 miles, when they had the piston ring to cylinder clearance issues with the 2010 range of A4 so essentially if the oil change interval is 7000 miles you will have replaced 7 quarts in 7000 miles. Maybe we should just change the filter, lol
additionally, everyone at the EPA and the California air resources board are concerned with fuel mileage, due to air pollution, but what about these low tension piston rings and bad piston cylinder fit problems that multiple manufactures are having? I wonder where all that burned goes? Most likely into the atmosphere in some form or another.
The oil cap smelling like fuel is not from driving the car hard it is from poor injectors which puts fuel in your oil and washes the oil away from your bearings an ends up spinning bearings is people are playing the cars but don't do their maintenance
I agree that poor fuel injectors can cause this, but fuel is naturally found in engine oil just driving normally due to blow by and keeping the crank case under a vacuum like these BMWs, like to do, so driving the car hard would increase the fuel smell, the oil sample was tested, and it was not over, diluted with fuel, but thank you for watching and thank you for the comment. You are appreciated.
pwg n55 just horrible, my ewg perfect at 90k miles(while tuned) and they updated rod bearings,
Gets starved of oil if its driven to hard???
Are they doing 10g launches or somthing how can the oil be away from the pick up for that long???
Some ultimate driving machine.
Low oil level is, low oil level…. that can kill any engine, some faster than others but they all need that continuous lubrication.
it's not from being driven "too hard". It's from being "beat on".
Basically people pretend these cars are invincible and do not
A: Properly warm up the oil temp
B: Change the oil every 3000-5000 miles MAX
C: Properly maintain the VANOS and do required carbon cleaning
D: Repair the majority of "small" issues that arise, which generally, indirectly, create wear on other important components.
BMWs are, in the grand scope of convenience, delicate. Most owners do not acknowledge this and do not properly care for the car.
It also doesn't help that BMW itself refuses to acknowledge these more sensitive areas of operation and refuse to really BEAT the maintenance and operating procedures into customers heads.
All in all, the N55 IS a very reliable engine, when Properly maintained, along with a couple other engines in their current and late lineup.
Don't buy at high mileage, because honestly, with these cars, the worst previous owners aren't actually the younger kids. It's the little old ladies that listened to the dealership tell them to change the oil every 7500 miles and have never let them get up to temperature.
@@dpro5321 I my self drive an Audi A3 2.0 Tdi, I tried to clean the intake manifold without removing it and knocked that black squidgy soot into the engine and semi seized the motor, I had to remove the whole, turbo, exhaust, drop coolant and oil, remove fuel rail and injectorsand finnaly the valvetrain to find carbon crammed in the top ring land on number 3 piston causing the semi seized condition, I cleaned it all out and rebuilt the motor, £500 of parts and about 25 hours of work later it runs again, really well infact
CFFB 140 Motor remapped to around 190 but almost 500 NM of torque😂😂😂
Why not use dry sump oil pans?
Scotty says, it's a money pit. And he's right
These cars have oil starvation issues specifically on hard left turns. There’s a huge write up about it online from a guy who tracked his n55. Only fix is to swap in an m4 oil sump. Is Scotty Kilmer right about bmw for this issue? In this case yes. Bmw advertises these cars as sports cars “the ultimate driving machine” what ultimate driving machine can’t take 1g of lateral force?
Lots of bmw owners want to cope and blame the owner saying they didn’t keep up with maintenance, but this is simply a design flaw. A new oil change doesnt matter if the oil pickup isn’t getting the oil. I hate and love bmw. I tried to sell my 335i but I couldn’t find a car that felt as satisfying to me in my budget (20k). Apart from rod bearings Scotty is wrong though, I come from jap cars and this wasn’t the nightmare I feared it was going to be. They need more maintenance and it costs more but I guess if you come in with that expectation and do the work yourself it isn’t bad
You are almost exactly aligned with my opinion on this!

Great videos J👍
Lol my BMW E60 530d has 314000km on the clock been driving it for 10 years now I'm changing the oil every 10000km regular maintenance plus I never drive my car hard when the engine is cold I put up my engine temps on the dash so I can observe it and that car has never let me down if you treat your car like dog sht the the car is gonna treat you like dog sht just saying
Excellence in commenting! Well said, thank you for watching.
@@MechaniclifeJDM 🤙
what can you even do about this i think i have the same problem on my 335i
Once you have had the problem the engine will require major work to make it right again. There is a jerry rigged approach that might work in a pinch if the damage isn’t too bad
What is it? Replacing the rod bearing or the crankshaft? Having a very similar situation
Has nothing to do with oil slushing. If it had low oil then yea maybe. But it had to be making noise before it locked up.
Sure at 5.5k rpm, and 1.2 G it will make noise, just not for long enough for you to realize it and then do something about it.
Look it up it’s actually a well documented issue where when used for race applications the engines get baffle plates, windage trays, and or a dry sump setup.
Not a money pit if you’re the one doing the work, don’t hate if you ain’t got the pockets or skills, respectfully 🗣️
Check out the channel
Is there Anything that can b done to prevent the oil starvation at rear of the engine?
Maybe, by adding a baffel or making sure it has plenty of oil. My guess is it didn't have enough oil.
I'm telling you Scotty's right
Your opinion is valued here, thanks for sharing.
Scotty's videos are targeted at people who want to buy a car and treat it like crap. If you want to buy a car and treat it like crap, BMW will be a money pit.
