Following serious ill health, I took up Wet On Wet Painting 3 years ago. However, no matter how hard I tried, I still could not master even the basic steps - even after watching an immense number of videos. I became so frustrated in my painting that even tried advertising for private tutors, though without any success!!! I then stumbled on RUclips tutorials featuring Paul Ranson. I now follow these tutorials significantly and am slowly gaining confidence in being capable of developing my own skillset. If I had the resources, I would invite this completely under-rated master (CRI) to my own city for personal 1 on 1 tutoring. Paul you are a very clever and master artist with an exceptional talent in tutoring. I enjoy thoroughly your tutorials and look forward to being able to glean experience from you to help me in my recovery process and getting back to enjoying w-o-w painting.
Hey there Daryl - I'm delighted to read your finally getting to grips with your art. Finding and clicking with the right instructor is key. I was so very lucky to have had so many amazing teacher trainers from Bob Ross Inc to help me. Many of them were Bob's original crop of instructors. He taught them well. Its now my honour to pass on their skills with a few of my own. I wish you continued success and not too many pickles along the way. Paul 😃😃😎😎
This man is just as gorgeous as his paintings are 😊. Not to mention that smooth poetic voice 😂.. I'm not a painter but I thoroughly enjoy watching him and have learnt a thing or two..Thank you Sir and God bless you and your work! You put a smile on my face 🤗😊🌻
By the way I am from Australia 🌏😊
Hello Susan - thank you so much for your kind comments. I'm delighted my videos make you happy. Sometimes our world can be a little less than pleasant so if I can put a smile on your face then its all worth while. I hope to make you smile again with more tutorials - big art hug from me to you 🥰😃😎
Much love to Australia😃😍😎🦘🦘
You are blessed with talent Sir.
Thank you Nikki - I think desire has a lot to do with it too. If I relied upon my tallent I'm sure I would be a long way off where I am now! Happy Painting paul 😄🥰😎
Your voice calms me down
Thank you. I've been told I have a very calming voice so happy listening ... and painting. _ Paul 😃😎
Hi Paul, Kristen from Nashville Tennessee USA here. Your artwork is gorgeous. Glad YT recommended you. Subscribed!
Hi Kristen - pleased to meet you. Welcome onboard my little art channel as my latest subscriber I hope you can join me for more art adventures and tutorials. I try and make on every week. Happy Painting - Paul - 😃😎
Thanks so much Paul for the lovely tutorial. Such a beautiful sunset.
Definitly one to try when you have a chance. I think this one might be a template for a bigger painting for the lounge. But I've said that before! 😃😎
Paul all i can say is WOW just love this😊😊
Hi Bill - yes, its one of THOSE paintings! From the reference photo to the finished painting this was a joy to paint. I hope you give it a go - best wishes as always - Paul 😃😎
Your channel is one of the gems of RUclips Paul, another great tutorial and the end result is fabulous!
Wow, thank you! Its a pleasure to be able to share with such a great group of folks. Your support is so appreciated - Paul 😃😎
Simply amazing. 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻☀️
Thank you 🙌- Yes, the painting gods were smiling on me today! It turned out nice hence the 'best ever' title. But there's always tomorrow and another painting - Have a great week - Paul 😃😎
This is fantastic! It’s very inspiring and I am ready to give it a go. Thank you for sharing every step, I took notes! To take my time, look, and plan ahead. Keeping those pickles in their jar!
I love golden browns mixed with the red. It’s semi transparent… so just a tiny bit. Those reflections actually look doable!! Hurray!
Thank you, have a fantastic week!!
🤗🤗🖌️🎨
Hi Stephanie - well I know were both fans of a nice warm scene. I knew when I was painting this that there would be quite a few whoops of joy for an underpainting too. I mentioned in the video that this is a super fixable scene. And it is. In fact I'm workin on a second scene in a similar technique. But thats all I can say at present. Have a great week and well be chatting again soon - Paul 😃😍😎
Amazing tutorial!! Thank you!!!
Thank you so much. Its a delightful painting thats sitting and glowing in the evening sun of my studio. I might have to do a bigger version just for the pleasure of painting it again. Happy Painting - Paul 😃🥰😎
Hi Paul! This was a very fun painting to do! It turned out really pretty! I did have to add color here- I didn’t notice until I stepped back!
Your tips and tricks really are important for us! Thank you!
Hi Stephanie - thats great to hear. I try and catch the challenges we face early so we don't have a dissapointing painting. The lack of colour at the start of the painting can be such an anoying thing. Its one I've made before = grey drab paintings. Have a great weekend and see you Sunday if you about - Paul 😃🥰😎
This is so beautiful!! I like how you've used mixed media! Thank you for sharing!!
Thank you so much Nancy. Mixed media is probably one of my favourite techniques. So forgiving and very fixable. Hope to see you for more tutorials - Paul 😃😍😎
This is beautiful, Paul, with great tips !
Many thanks David. Sometimes a painting just works. This is one of those that came together so nicely. I hope you get a chance to paint it - Paul 😃😎
@@PaulRansonArt Well Paul, your technique/skill level helps. As did the specific techniques used. To me the unexpected bit at the end, That glaze really finishes the painting off nicely. And it also really grabbed my interest, how lightly you applied it. Exciting ! I love your tip: " take your time" ! But I had to laugh at myself, because sometimes it seems I can rush one application, then days pass till the next. So I take your tip of taking time, but not be ridiculous about it lol !! And to get less erratic about time.
I met a guy at the art store last Sunday. He has always wanted to try oil painting. From his photos he showed my wife and I, he seems quite prolific with acrylic. So by the time we got done talking, he left with a few tubes of Winton series oil paint and a tip to go visit 3 channels on youtube, yours included. The other two were Yovette's and Justin's channels. All three of you have inspired me, because you take time to explain certain methods. My wife loves your technique of oil over an acrylic base beyond the gesso. So in others words the darker base of the main subject being acrylic. Now also the colored gesso. She is painting one of yours in this series. It may be the first one you offered, so you may not have seen he post to you there. She also subscribed.
@@davidg.5076 Hi David - ah yes taking your time. I find myself rushing about trying to get everything done so I can slow down and paint. The challenge is my mind slips back into overdrive when I'm not looking. In fact just learning to look is part of taking your time. The two go hand in hand. The last part of this trinity is seeing what we've done. Learn to turn your back on your work if only few 20 seconds can reveal a whole world we didn't know we had created. I deliberately sit with my back to the easel as I type this just to give my painting a rest from me! Then I glance back and see what I have painted for the 'first time'. Have a great week and thank you're lovely other half for subscribing and painting with me. Best wishes - Paul 😃😃😎😎
I really enjoyed this one...Well done!
Thank you so much. It turned out great didn't it - Paul 😃😎
Thanks. Your videos are very enjoyable and informative
Thank you Mark. I'm pleased your enjoying my tutorials - Paul 😃😎
love this paul...will add to my list to try,,👍 keep up your work ..👌
Awesome, thank you! Its a real nice scene and honestly not too hard to fix and play with. Happy Painting - Paul 😃😎
Hiya Paul! Just stepping in to catch the weekly painting. The recent hurricane we had here in Houston, Beryl, turned out to be quite devastating, and the recovery process (without power) is long and challenging. Anyway, super awesome painting and great tutorial video. Thanks, Paul, and have a great week sir. Cheers,
Hi Steve - just caught me before I turn in for the night. I wondered how you were getting on and hoping your and all the good folks were safe. Pleased to hear from you. Been a long day of tech fixing - sigh again - and painting. Sotomorrow I'll post an update of todays work. Take care and speak soon - Paul 😃
Muito lindo, maravilhoso, divino. 💖💖💖💖😍😍😍😍🙏🙏🙏🙏
Grazie mille, arriveranno tanti altri adorabili tutorial di pittura. Amore per l'Italia - Paolo 😃🥰😎
Beautiful! I love your acrylic paint underpaintings. They look so much more complicated than they really are and ALWAYS turn out gorgeous. Thank you Paul.
Hi Cheryl 🥰 - Yes this really was a delight to paint. Some scenes need a little work to get them over the finish line. This one was a hit right from the start. I think another mixed media painting is the dish of the day. Have a lovely week and thank you as always for watching and support - Paul 😃😎
Thank you Paul!
My pleasure Amber. Hope you get to paint with me soon - Paul 😃🥰😎
Hello from Europe! You are fantastic! You explain your paintng very clealry and I thank you for that. I usually paint in acrylic. I tried painting with oil once but the smell of the thinners bothered me. But, I know that oil paintings are much more beautiful. Where I live there is no Bob Ross oil but it is a good idea. Thank you for your time and for teaching us so well.
Thank you so much for your kind comments. I'm delighted to hear your enjoying my videos. Oil paints have come on a long way in recent years. No more terrible smells with low or no odour paints and thinners. If you want to have a go without using any thinners there's water mixable oils too. These are fun to try and use soap and water to clean up. Maybe give then a try sometimes. Happy Painting - Paul 😄😄🥰🥰😎😎
@@PaulRansonArt Thank you for your reply. Well, is harder to find some specialized materials around here. But it's good to know. Thanks a lot. 🥰
Good evening from South Africa
Hello Lindy - love the beautiful rose! One of my favourites to paint! I hope you get to see more of my tutorials and look forward to speaking with you again. Love to South Africa - Paul 😃😍😎
Yay you said good for beginners my hands in the air that's me sorted 😅, 🐈🐈⬛🐶
Yay for us - a beginners painting ... TBH I love it when a painting looks tricky but in reality its much simpler. Yes, its still possible to get into a pickle but it starts looking almost finished from an early stage. Again, another indicator that its a beginners painting. See you in an hour - 😃😍😎
Yo this was super dope! Paul you got a good vibe to you my friend! Insta subbed!
Many thanks for that great comment. I'm pleased you like my vibe. Loving you're art too. Some very inspirational work. Best wishes Paul 😃😎
@@PaulRansonArt thx Paul!!
Thanks!
Hi Robin and Mrs Angel - always so kind. Hope your farm work is paying dividends and things are growing well. 😃😍😎
I love that glow in the painting Paul, and I love working with both mediums. Great job as always. 💕🤗
Thanks so much 😊Yovette. This turned out so nicely. That great reference photo really was the key to this whole video. Lots more like this to come. Loving your smaller painting videos too @paintingwithyovette - Big art hugs from me to you - Paul 😃🥰😎
Your painting really is FANTASTICAL🤩 (I think that's a real word 🤷🏼) Paul, I wish you weren't all the way across the pond because I'd love sit, have a cup of tea with you and hopefully absorb some of your knowledge and talent. Plus, it would just be lovely to actually meet you😊 Have a blessed week🙏🏻😊
Aww thank you Amy. Yes, we're a long ways away but who knows we might share a virtual cuppa over the internet one day! Have a great week too and 'see you' soon - Big art hugs from us here to you over there - Paul and the gang 😃🥰😎
Thank U so much.
Thank you for watching and leaving a nice comment. Hope to see you soon for more paintings - Paul 😃😎
Acrylic underpainting is the secret sauce for a quicker painting as well. You can cover large areas with quick drying, cheaper paints, and then use the oils to give the shine to the painting. I once accidentally used acrylic white with oils. Wondered why my painting was nearly dry after lunch!
Yes, been there and done that as well! I picked up a bottle of Liquid white acrylic instead of the liquid white oils and the same result! Phew what a mess. I now colour code my bottles with a blob of nail varnish on the cap. Lots more videos to come - Have a great week - Paul 😃😃😎😎
@@PaulRansonArt Good tip! All the best!
Absolutely beautiful painting, Paul ❤
Hi Hugh - yes this turned out to be a real eye popper! I loved painting it for the channel and hope you get to paint it too - Paul 😃😎
Could you do a video on a budget kit like what paints to buy and brushes etc
Hello Ray - I have! I did a whole playlist called 'Getting Started with Oils' I go over the brushes, paints and materials. PLUS - my biggest money saver - the DIY Paper 'canvas' you see me using. This will save you a ton of $$ when you're startting out. Here's a link to the list - ruclips.net/p/PLia0kTctmZ_dpScJTWRBQGJfA2n9sNNOH Happy Painting _ Paul 😃😎
Hi there, how’s going nice sharing great content must say I am new here

Paul I'd like to see an oil done in sepia with acrylic underpainting, although I suppose this is a sepia
Hi Jackie - I have just such a picture and I want to paint it real soon. So keep loking in and it will be up in the next couple of weeks - Have a lovely weekend - Paul 😃😍😎
As always, it looks incredible. You’re beyond belief. Just wondering though, do you use watercolour?
My wife is the water colour expert. She's brilliant but camera shy so I don't expect a video anytime soon.😃😎
@@PaulRansonArt
Oh duuuude. Get her to paint, you can narrate. Teamwork at its finest.
@@Ron_DeForest Alas she won't and I get it. She's happy being in the wings.
Wow, that turned out great , I love it ❤ . If I wanted to try this using acrylics and then water soluble oils, could I skip the liquid clear step?
Hi Mathew - the wet on wet canvas is really a key element to enable you to apply glazes and pull reflections. Without this your coming to be fighting a dry canvas that just wants to grab the colour and stain. Get a bottle of water mixable linseed oil and use this in place of clear. Its a lot thinner so go easy with it and use just enough to make the canvas just shiney. Than carry on the same way I did with the colours. Hope this helps - Paul 😃😃😎😎
Beautiful painting! Just want to know why do you need to paint the canvas with titanium white when the canvas is already white? I am new to painting so sorry if I am asking silly question.
Hi Tommy - its not a silly question at all. Buff titanium is a warm yellow tone - not always easy to see on camera. If I held a sheet of white paper against the canvas you would see the difference. Most paintings benefit from being painted on an off white canvas. Its easier to judge the colours when you're not staring at a glaring white canvas. I usually start with a light grey canvas. Hope this answers your question. Look forward to hearing from you soon - Paul 😃😃😎😎
Thank you for your explanation 😄 Can't wait to try paint this masterpiece
