Glad that I wasn't the only one who didn't think that boxart Mega Man looked like he was in constant physical pain.
I never thought he looked like he was in pain. I just thought he looked like the goofiest and dumbest protagonist in history. Totally not a badass. More like the opposite of badass. But in all fairness, lots of old NES games had awful box art like this.
The japanese box arts of the megaman games are pretty descent

For me it is as if the incarnation of pain was born with a MegaMan on it.
And this is why you make sure the team who designs your box art knows what the character is supposed to look like... 😆
I think they knew, they just didn't believe the cartoony box art for the Japanese version would resonate with western audiences. And honestly if I were 10 years old again and saw the Japanese box art version without having ever seen the actual game, I wouldn't have given it a second thought.
@adamb89 , Actually, there was an interview on G4 (if anyone remembers that channel) a few years back that said the main reason that this box art turned out the way it did was due to some sort of time constraints. It's like literally, the guy that was in charge of localization was under a tremendous time crunch for whatever reason and didn't know what else to do and so as they stated word for word, "He literally went out and got a friend of his to do it in under six hours, and that is why the original box art turned out so bad".

It really is baffling that sonehow soneone in the 80s/early 90s thought "hey! Let'a depict our hero as a awkward middle aged man in a blue and yellow losesly fitting in some places, some sort of unitard" and also thought "yep and kids will love it"
Instead of easily just drawing their protagonist in a cartoon accurate way
think I heard something like the had to ship the game real quick but didnt know they had to make a splash art for it and so they made that in like a couple a hours AND because Japan companies didnt think any western folks would but a game with anime characters on it so they tried to make maegaman look like a well ...Man ..?

The artist was given a very short amount of time and had zero knowledge of the game. They just told him something along the lines of, 'draw a guy that shoots', so that's what they got.
I didn't like the box art. Glad they changed for future installments .I think they got the idea from all the 80s space / future shows during this time

Fun little trivia bit. The game didn't really have a cover when it was supposed to be shipped to the states, so one of the higher ups called his friend and said he needed a cover by morning. The guy apparently gave a brief discription of what megaman was supposed to look like and then...thats what we got after the artist spent a night working on it.

The American boxart for some games could get wild lol. The original japanese box art is much closer to the in game style.

I just love that the amount time taken to make the cover for Megaman was less time than one of my college papers...Makes me feel accomplished, especially because anyone that reads them will enjoy it (if you enjoy philosophical papers discussing the difference between zero and nothing).
The difference between zero and nothing is that "nothing" isn't the name of a Megaman character. I have solved philosophy.
Hmmm...🤔 I suppose one could argue that zero is the amount of nothing. But, for that to be true there would have had to be something in the first place. Therefore nothing would denote the lack of something's existence, an unknown, never experienced or imagined thing. While zero would denote the absence of something that did exist at some point in time.

This is how Megaman and Zero became brothers in Megaman Sprite Comic.
So that Megaman is offically known as "Bad Boxart" Megaman and he was going to get a part in an up-coming Megaman title years ago. Like how Mario Maker was but for Megaman. He had weaker attacks, only shots twice inside of three times. And I think a tad slower with limited jump. When Capcom Japan released Megaman, translation to the US was poor. They thought the game was Tron-like, hence his design. They did not know he had the Arm-Cannon either.
