Spartan and Pudgey Just so you know, Richard Harris (Dumbledore) died after this movie, so they had to recast the role of Dumbledore. Michael Gambon did a good job, but he's just not the same Dumbledore you've become used to.

Yeah which is wild cause I didn’t like the 3rd book but the movie is epic
I think part of it is that it is probably the best film of the series from a film making point. I remember not liking it at all at first as a kid because of all the changes to the locations but being an adult I really learned to appreciate it for the visuals and themes and stuff. Although I still think it left out a lot of important things from the books.

@@clover2739 Ya sometimes reactors are more worried about "reacting" than paying attention to the story. It's a fine line to tread. You can't sit there doing nothing but then you can't be all emoting and talking over dialog all the time either.

I find it funny how you guys say “You shouldn’t be allowed to treat House elf’s like this”. In the books Harmione actually creates a club to give rights to magical creatures.
And JK Rowling uses this to make the point that social justice activism is bad and as long as the slaves are treated fairly enslaving them is for the best.
Meanwhile the “elfs” thought it was weird and they where free in hogwarts and got to do what they loved. And we’re paid handsomely by dumbledore but often times didn’t even want to be paid. Lol. Hermione was confused lol. Besides. Their more wild counterparts were a lot less savory.
@@Makkaru112 They weren't paid. Dobby the only house elf likely ever paid in Hogwarts or given days off. Because that was part of the employment them both agreed upon. Though frowned upon I don't think the house elves would have refused it though. Because if Dumbledore or any employer wishes to do it, their will was law.

@@embran8486 In the books they do refuse to be paid except for Dobby. Winky (not shown in movies) was free too and refused to be paid considering it like the ultimate disgrace. The other house elves of Hogwarts aren't free. Even Dobby refused what Dumbledore was offering because it was too much and he asked for less.
At the start, you were wondering why the Dursleys would want to keep Harry at home instead of sending him to Hogwarts (and not having to “put up with him”), so you might have missed the part about this in the first movie. It happens where Hagrid breaks into the cabin and the Dursleys reveal they knew about magic all along? It isn’t in the RUclips reaction and I haven’t seen the uncut one so I’m not sure if you noticed it, but Petunia makes it very clear she hates magic and thinks it’s unnatural and strange (her husband does too) and they always intended to keep Harry away from it. There are probably also other strong emotions attached to it but I won’t lead the witness, I’m sure the longer you have with this film series the more you’ll learn 😊
And the part that they see “harry” using magic to throw the cake in the visit. So yeah, its not that they don’t want harry away, they don’t want him to learn more magic
Also, trying not to spoil anything, but if you read the books, there's a hint towards the fact that the letter left with Harry in book 1 as a baby explains that they have to keep him. Like I said, no spoilers for Spart & Pudge, but they can't kick him out even if they wanted to.
Plus imagine the fact that Harry has to go back to live with them every summer with him getting more and more powerful with magic from learning more… like he’ll have more to use against them, they’re f*cked lol

the teachers not understanding why they did the flying car thing is understandable in the book. they ask harry why he just didn't send a message with hedwig explaining what happened and then wait to be picked up.
As others have said 1 & 2 are on the child friendly side, 3 is where things become interesting and slightly darker; from 4 onwards is where playtime ends and the darkness really begins.
"That's so random". Not if you read the books. Although they are a few clues in the film, the biggest one is that they say the person who is after Riddle's book is a Gryffindor. And of course, we actually see Lucius put the book in Ginny's cauldron at the beginning of the film.
FUN FACT: The potion the nurse gives Harry to regrow his bones (Skele-Gro) was actually invented by "The Potterer" aka Linfred of Stinchcombe aka the founding father of the Potter family.
Lucius Malfoy got so mad at Harry in the ending he literally almost cast a killing curse on him 😅

Dumbledore was recast after this film due to Richard Harris' death. Coincidentally, Sir Michael Gambon who portrayed Dumbledore in films 3-8 just died the other day.
Although based on the second shortest book, this is the longest film. Order of the Phoenix, which is based on the longest book, is the second shortest of the movies.
Foreign language translations had to change Tom Marvolo Riddle's name, so that an appropriate anagram could be formed. In Icelandic (my language) his name is "Trevor Délgome" which makes up "Ég er Voldemort".
Before Christian Coulson was cast as Tom Riddle, Eddie Redmayne, who later played Newt Scamander in the Fantastic Beasts films, auditioned for the role.
Hugh Grant was originally cast as Lockhart but was forced to withdraw at the last minute because of scheduling conflicts. Jason Isaacs also originally auditioned for Lockhart.
Tom Felton improvised Draco's "I didn't know you could read" to Harry disguised as Goyle because he forgot his line.
Lucius' and Harry's exchange just before Lucius leaves Dumbledore's office was completely improvised by the actors on the spot. Jason Isaacs said "Let us hope that Mr. Potter will always be around to save the day" and Daniel Radcliffe immediately replied "Don't worry, I will be".
In the book it's revealed that Filch is actually a Squib, which is a non-magical person who is born with at least one magical parent (kind of the opposite of a Muggleborn).
Hermione and Ron's awkward non-hug was the result of Emma Watson being embarassed to hug both Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint in front of everyone, with her hugging Daniel during filming having to be frozen for a few seconds to get the desired effect due to her breaking the hug too quickly. This also unintentionally foreshadowed their feelings for each other.
It's almost universally agreed upon that the films did Ron dirty. One of the most notable ways was how most of his best lines were given to Hermione. One notable example of this is when Hermione is the one to explain what "Mudblood" means instead of Ron. In the book, Ron is also the one who points out how ridiculous the whole idea of wizarding blood supremacy is (instead of Hagrid).
A sweet behind the scenes story is that during production, Emma Watson frequently brought her pet hamster Millie on set but, unfortunately, Millie passed away shortly after filming began. The set department created a specially-made hamster coffin for her.

Also, Emma has a broken wrist during this movie. You can briefly see the bandage under her robes when she is brewing the Polyjuice potion, and can also tell they are deliberately trying to conceal it with the shirt cuffs when she is pouring the potion out 😊

The Harry Potter movies are enjoyable even without reading the books obviously, but the books are full of details that for time reasons are not included in the movies. So there are some points that may seem like plot holes if you haven't read the book. For example (I'm at the beginning of the reaction) when Harry is punished by the Dursley for the cake incident, there is a reason that the movie doesn't explain. The Dursley were scared by Harry because they remembered the incident with Hagrid the past year (and the pig's tail) and they thought that Harry could do the same to them. But they didn't know the truth: Harry, like any other Hogwarts student not graduated, can't use magic out of school, is forbidden by the Minister of Magic. The Minister has a magic system (The Trace, which will be important in the last movies) that allows to identify every form of magic coming from the underage students. So Dobby, who is an elf and his magic is not controlled by the Minister but follows other rules, made this disaster to simulate that Harry was the responsable. Harry immediatly received a mail from the Minister that blame him for using magic out of school and near to some Muggles (not knowing that Dobby was there) and so the Dursley descovered the truth. At this point they didn't fear Harry anymore because in the mail was written that another infraction would cause him to be expelled. So they locked him.

The gist of this is correct, except for the fact that the "trace" doesn't detect when wizards do magic outside of Hogwarts, rather, if magic is done in their household.
Pudgey: "I'm really hoping that Dobby is here to stay."
Spartan: "Oh, how can he not be. A character like that doesn't just disappear for another five-six movies."

@@Rorujin No, Dobby's last interaction is more poignant because his relation with Harry is so pronounced across the books. He is liked by Harry here, but more out of sympathy of the live the Elf has led. Though Dobby life saver in last film, the overwhelming effect on Harry shouldn't be as high there. But Dobby becoming such a valued friend in between makes the effect of last interaction so logical. On side note Dobby not present as help during Goblet of Fire is mind boggling to me. Even though nice moment for Neville, he just shouldn't have the guts on how he got the stuff needed for Harry.
@@embran8486 Yeah it didn't make sense how Harry didn't have much emotional reaction to A.D.'s death than an elf he barely met in the movies. Even the films make it seem like he got over S.B.'s death pretty quick and yet he took the whole day to mourn for the other.

Most people were surprised to see Harry talking to the snake in this movie, completely forgetting he did it at the beginning of the first movie. Though we never heard him speak Parsletongue, he did talk to the snake at the zoo in a way the snake understood, and could understand the snake's departing line of, "Thanks, amigo."
The key to understanding the Dursleys is one simple fact: Harry cannot ever be happy. The Dursely's didn't want Harry to go back to school because doing so would have made Harry happy, and that is something they have been working hard to avoid since they took him in. They would rather have him home and miserable than away and happy.
You might be also interested to know that, even though most of the cast were quite young, the director encouraged them to enhance their performances any way they could. Draco's line, "I didn't know you could read," was adlibbed by the young Tom Felton, and the director thought it was so funny he kept it in the movie.

Is that actually in the books, or your interpretation? My take is that they hate magic, as the mom made clear in the first movie. The whole family fawned over her sister, but she "saw her for what she was". They have hatred/jealousy over magic users, so they certainly don't want Harry to become one. I don't see it as just about making sure Harry's never happy.

Sure they may hate magic but if they really couldn't stand it they would get Harry away from them as much as possible. No they all seemed to have a demented joy in making Harry suffer. Vernon because he was a dick, Petunia because she focused all of her jealousy and also pain of loss of Lily on Harry and Dudley because he was just copying his parents prickishness.
@@Aeroldoth3 Page 33, Goblet of Fire. Vernon has just been handed the letter Arthur Weasley had sent, inviting Harry to stay with them and see the Quidditch World Cup. "Uncle Vernon's most fundamental instincts came into conflict. Allowing harry to go would make Harry happy, something Vernon had struggled against for thirteen years." The implication is clear; while it may not have been an open policy, the idea of anything happening to benefit Harry mental well being was to be avoided at any cost. At least, that's my interpretation of it. Giving Harry less food than Dudley while they were all on a diet, not letting Harry communicate with his friends, it all seems to add up to a systemic pattern of keeping Harry as miserable as possible.
@@gestaltdude Mixed with resentment. They had accepted the responsibility to keep him from harm when they could have washed their hands of it from the start. That at least is to their credit. And remember that in literary terms JKR is strictly traditional - so they are the archetype wicked step-parents. As Jessica might have said - they were not evil - they were just written that way.
@@Llanchlo There is another theory that has been doing the rounds that I am reluctant to mention here because it would be a major spoiler. Something about how Ron's behaviour was affected by a thing towards the end of the saga, and the same happening to the Dursleys because harry had something similar about himself.
I know a lot of people would now say that they like the later movies better because of their tone but this was my favourite as a kid. Even though it never adopts a dark tone like the later ones, it does have its fair mix of creepy and interesting stuff(the flying car, spiders, snake "shh" voices, notes on the wall, the flashbacks, basilisk, Voldemort reveal, etc) which really intrigued me back then. Does anyone else also like this movie the most as a kid?
its still one of my favourites, the set design and the voldemort backstory was soooooo cool. i really like it because it introduces the fact that harry and voldemort are two sides of the same coin
Just remember, they keep getting darker and darker! People say that the 3rd is where it gets dark (it is darker) but in my opinion the 4th one really kicks off the mature tone for the rest of the series. I’m excited as hell for all the rest!
i love them all but just no 4 was only truly dark at the end the rest was VERY light hearted

I really did NOT like the 4th movie. Of course there were good parts, but some very important aspects were missing (like Harry being able to throw off the Imperius curse, showing he has real inner strength), and the characterization of Dumbledore was awful.
To put it in perspective, movies 1-3 are on Netflix Kids, the others are not 😊

The books (and the movies) get more mature as Harry matures from 11 to 18. Very clever on JK's part.
I was about 7 when the first book came out, so about the perfect age to sort of grow up 'with' the books. I was never a huge fanboy or anything but I definitely think each book getting darker/ more mature kept the series from ever being seen as a "kids franchise", it just grew up with the audience at the time.
Considering how much after-the-fact retconning she's done, I respectfully disagree. She was under a tremendous amount of pressure from WB to finish the series so they could make them into movies before the cast got too old. I think now she really regrets that. The world-building was never strong (don't even get me started), but the first 2-3 books have a very distinct, over-the-top Roald Dahl quality, whereas everything that follows, and in my opinion undeservedly, demands to be taken literally. None of it is aging well, or stands up under the slightest scrutiny. Best to give it 10 years, fix all the gaping problems and inconsistencies, and just reboot the entire series as a limited show.

Also Way to nitpick lol JK Rowling has one of the best & most extensive world building in story telling out there esp for children's books that is consistent for the most part save very minor pedantic non-issues. Plot-wise she is ingeniously consistent & brilliant with all the tie-ins. The retconning is a matter of JK's own personal preference/regrets (such as pairing Hermione w/ Ron).
It's because Harry enjoys school. That's why they try and stop him from going.
Thats not why, they are trying to stop him from being magical since they think it makes you a freak and unnatural.
Hope you enjoyed Richard Harris as Dumbledore. I personally think he’s brilliant.

42:34 Funny enough, the scene where Malfoy's father kicks Dobby down the stairs was actually improvised and the director wanted to do another take because he thought the actor just slipped, but he explained that he was kicking Dobby down the stairs saying he thought it was something that the character would do and the director agreed completely once he realized it wasn't an accident.

@@darkstar3116 but none of it would have happened if Voldemort didn't try to kill Harry as a baby. It's all in the books, the prophecy is a self fulfilling one and only happened because Voldemort acted on it. Voldemort and Harry are like an unstoppable force meeting an immovable object.

Hermione: is a muggle-born because she has two non magical parents
Ron and Malfoy: Both pure-bloods because both their parents are pure bloods
Harry: is a half-blood because his mother was a muggle born while his father was a pure blood
A half blood would be someone who had one magical parent and one muggle parent. Technically, Harry is a full blood wizard, even if he doesn't have a long history of magic on one side of the family, unlike the pure bloods.
@@greywolf7577Harry is a half blood confirmed because of his mother, she is a muggle born just like Hermione. Harry is just less "diluted" than either of them because of his Father being "Pure blood"
In the books, Hermione actually tries to start a movement to free the elves. Ironically, the elves (apart from Dobby) don't want to be freed and are deeply insulted by Hermione's efforts. To most house elves, being freed is the ultimate punishment. We see an example of this in the books, where a different elf is freed as punishment for failure and sinks into a deep depression from which she never recovers. The need to serve a master or mistress is deeply ingrained into their identity, and Dobby is considered a disgrace by the other elves for accepting payment for his services after being freed.
It kind of bothers me when people see this issue as black and white and think Harry and Ron are pro slavery and are getting annoyed at her wanting to free the elves, when it’s more complicated than that. Because Hermione’s heart is in the right place, but she’s young and going about it the wrong way so the point she’s trying to force the house elves to change everything they know which affects them mentally, like how she was trying to sneakily hide clothes to set them free, which Ron felt wasn’t right and that the clothes should be visible so they at least see it and can choose for themselves
Dobby talking Dumbledore down in his hiring price was pretty epic though lol. He still has his pride, he cant take much money to work.
@@clover2739 Hermione flat out refused to take the elves feelings into account, thinking she knew better for them. Which, while aweful, still made her more human and relatable in the books. But that like every other flaw her character has was wiped away for the movies. And thats a shame, because she's the only character in the entire movie's story that has zero growth because of it.

Mate. You like the twists and reveals? You're going to bloody love this series. There is stuff even in these early films that come back around later. Cant wait.
For some reason it's not popular with a lot of fans but this is my favorite, actually! Maybe it's because I owned a DVD of this one as a kid, but I just really like how close the darker tone of this installment is to the book, and it also doesn't feel as rushed in pacing compared to the first one where every second something was happening. My only issue is that when Harry speaks parseltongue we can immediately tell which wasn't the case in the first movie, and I feel like it would've made the reveal that Harry can speak with snakes a lot more shocking. Other than that, an awesome movie!
Really? Since it came out as far as I know it's remained one of the highest acclaimed ones (where I'm from) with OOtP and HBP being the absolute dog shit sequels amongst fans hahaha
This is actually one of my favorites of the movie series as well, but mostly because it doesn't all all that much important stuff out that was integral in the book series. (I also love the practical effects with Harry fighting the basilisk.)
I think the issue people have with this one is its got the same formula as the first movie. Team thinks wrong person is doing the problems, turns out its someone they don't expect, and then end up being Voldamort again. Its still better then the first one but all the movies after this one employ a different formula.
@@CheddahSlammer This is actually the reason I think the book is nothing special (and one of my least favorites). As such, the movie was a pleasant surprise compared to movie adaptations of the books I really like; for example the movies did nothing with the HBP that was one of my favorite twists (even if I did guess it a bit early) in the books.

NO SPOILERS IN THIS POST: Just to clarify some stuff on the "Pure blood", "muggle" terms. In the Wizarding World, people can fall into two categories; those who can do magic and those who can't. There are three types of people who can do magic: pure bloods - witches and wizards who come from families who have always married other magic families (eg. the Malfoys, and, more importantly, the Weasleys), muggle borns - witches and wizards who were born into muggle families (i.e. none of the parents have magic), but due to some witch or wizard in their ancestry, they carry some magic (eg. Hermione, and Lilly Potter - Harry's mom), and then finally half-bloods - those who were born from one pure-blood and one muggle (eg. Seamus, Harry, and Voldemort).
There are then two types of people who can't do magic, namely; muggles - people born into families with no magic and who themselves can't to magic (eg. Vernon, Petunia, and Dudley Dursley - Harry's uncle, aunt, and cousin), and squibs - people born into magic families who themselves can't do magic (eg. Filch - the Hogwarts caretaker with the cat - this is not mentioned in the movies, but is spoken about in the Chamber of Secrets book).

The thing about the Harry Potter books is that the author, JK Rowling originally wrote the series for adults. It was the book publishers that decided to advertise it as children's books. If you read between the lines of the story you will see it is a satire. First, one has to understand that you the reader are looking at the story through Harry Potter's point of view as he grows up throughout the years at Hogwarts. In the first book and movie Harry is 11 years old so you see his world from his 11 year old mindset and maturity. But as he grows up and begins to understand things more and more the story gets darker and less innocent as he matures with age.
The reason I call the books a satire is that many of the stories deals with racism of a different kind and political corruption. Dobby might be a house elf but nevertheless he is a slave just the same. There might not be any racism in the wizarding world against people of color but there is racism against wizards who do not come from pure magical families.
Harry doesn't see the horrible similarities between the wizarding world and the muggle world at this point because he is only 12 years old during The Chamber of Secrets. To a certain extent he is still an innocent little boy and is not mature enough to comprehend it all to the fullest extent.

This is Not a spoiler but I have to warn you that the actor, Richard Harris who plays Dumbledore passed away shortly after he did Chamber of Secrets. Michael Gambon became the new Dumbledore in the Harry Potter films from then on. But only just a few days ago Michael Gambon too passed away this month at the age of 82.

I do wonder if J K Rowling had known from the beginning how popular the books would be, would she have made the early books longer. They are quite short compared with the later books.
The word "mudblood" is a vulgar term for muggle-born witches and wizards. Their parents are muggles but somehow they got the "magic gene." Harry's mom, like Hermione, was a muggle-born. Salazar Slytherin was the founder of House Slytherin and believed that the teachings of magic should be kept within the "pure-blooded" community.
Hagrid was in his 3rd year at Hogwarts when he was framed by Tom Riddle. As a result, he was wrongfully expelled.
Absolutely love Richard Harris as Dumbledore. His presence is so calming, yet commands such respect even if you don't know what he's capable of.
I am one of the few fans who actually prefers michael gambon's version of dumbledore (I don't blame the actor for the ooc scene in goblet of fire)

I guess this goes for every adaptation, but I couldn't recommend to read the Harry Potter books more. I find myself lucky to have read them back in the day, waiting with great anticipation for each release and it was such an amazing adventure. You get to know so much more about this world, the school houses, quidditch, their classes, exams, their day to day life in Hogwarts, every character from the movies so much better and many others.

Pudgey, your intuition is correct, the first book makes it quite clear that Dumbledore knows more or less everything that goes around there but he has a very good reason to allow Harry (and others) to face certain dangers.
Unfortunately the laws regarding house elves are what they are, and as such Dumbledore can't so much about it. Their oppression becomes quite a big theme later in the books but it's completely missing from the movies.
My first exposure to the series was listening to the audio books as they came out while I provided child care of my granddaughter so my 2nd eldest daughter could go back to work. So, I was not a teen or even your age - though I have to say the books have a LOT more detail and side plots and such. But while I saw the childish aspects, I also saw that it really had a great plot right from the first book and as you get deeper, the story gets better. The movies are not as detailed so the first couple you really see the kid content and if anything, they get darker faster than the books.
I think the Chamber of Secrets gets better and better with every rewatch. The mystery that builds up is one of the best in the series and the more you rewatch it the more you realize the subtle intricacies in the plot and the bread trail that's being laid out. like the fact that there is water in the bathroom because the Basilisk comes out of the sink. Try rewatching it in a few years and see if it hits different after watching the entire series and having more knowledge of the overall world and characters. You can make even more connections then.
as a huge fan of the movies, it is a lot of fun watching y'all experience them unspoiled. it's such a great story. y'all are in for a treat.

It's important to remember that he got temporarily removed as headmaster, which is probably the reason he couldn't just show up himself to help Harry.
They do seem to catch many of the small things others miss. Which means they will likely enjoy the later movies even more for it.
There's a scene after the credits with the Professor Lockhart where he wrote another book called "who am i" with a picture of him in a straight jacket as the cover photo.
Now that you're starting this series of movies, keep an eye out for those cheeky comments. There will be some spoilers, and some people will get upset when u don't catch the small details in the film but don't mind them. On your theory about Snape ‘not wanting Harry to become famous in order to protect him’ - the kid is one of the absolute most famous people in the wizarding world, even despite having nothing to do with it for the first 11 years of his life (while living in the Muggle world and never learning about the existence of magic)

To my mind, casting Branagh as Lockhart was still one of the best ever casting choices of the entire series. Also, something that has always bothered me about this movie: Dumbledore was there when Myrtle died, and Myrtle wasn't exactly a secret if everyone avoided the bathroom because of her. Why did Dumbledore never bother to ask what happened? Why was it only ever Harry and Ron?
Dumbledore most likely already knew, but like many other things, kept his Voldemort secrets close to heart. Anyone knowing too much about Voldemort ended up dead.
Plot convenience. A lot of the early books left you thinking that most adult wizards were largely idiots to the point that these kids had to solve all the dangerous stuff going on every year. It has unfortunately given rise to the "Dumbledore is secretly the most evil character in the series" meme with him supposedly being so smart but not doing obvious things. He doesn't talk to people he seriously should have talked to before the events of the next book/movie, even to find out what he knew. It's all just Rowling banging out 7 books in 10 years writing plot conveniences and already knowing the answer to that book's plot twist.
In this world those with magic, there are pure bloods (both parents magic), half bloods (one magic one Muggle)and muggle borns (both parents muggles) Harrys mom and Hermione are muggle-borns. Tom Riddle aka Voldemort is half blood as he mentioned (muggle father, witch mother).
I do think there is more of a distinction for pure bloods. Harry isn't considered a pure blood in the books bc his grandparents are muggles.
❤Minerva was a great Quidditch player back in the day. The Slytherin Gryffindor rivalry in the sport started and escalated since the moment a Slytherin student committed a dangerous foul against her and it never stopped being Rocky ever since between the houses.

Harry's mum Lily was like Hermione. She was muggleborn, so her parents were both Muggles but she herself is a witch. Harry is half-blood because his mum is muggleborn and his dad was pureblood. But you would also be half-blood if one parent was a Muggle and the other a witch and all combinations where not both your parents are pureblood. Draco and also Ron for example are pureblood, their entire families are magical. But unlike the Malfoys the Weasleys don't really care about that, it just happens to be that they always married other wizards.
Hagrid is indeed only 2 years younger than Voldemort. He was expelled in his third year so Voldemort was in his fifth year when we see him in this film.
The second film is mostly considered to be the weakest film of the franchise I think. I personally like it because all in all it is pretty book accurate unlike many of the later films (partly understandable as the books get a lot bigger as the series progresses) but it is a bit slow at times.
A little warning for the next one. You will get another Dumbledore actor because sadly Richard Harris passed away after the second movie. And the portrayal will change significantly at times but after a quick adjustment period I still liked Michael Gambon's (who also sadly passed away last week) portrayal a lot.
Quidditch will stay a bit silly throughout the series because honestly even in the books the rules don't make a lot of sense. You need to watch it with a bit of blissful ignorance ;D Same goes for all the teachers not interfering.
I would have to watch the movie again but I think nobody except Dumbledore or Harry call him Voldemort in the first movies (Hagrid once in the first but only because Harry wants to know his name). It's like Hermione (in the books it is Dumbledore) says fear of a name only increases fear of the thing itself. People are afraid of Voldemort so they don't dare to use his name. But in the end that only makes him more mysterious and people will only fear him more because of it.
House elves are very powerful but they are practically slaves. It is a bit like stockholm syndrome I think. They think it is their duty to serve wizards at this point. But it is a part of the story that Rowling has gotten a lot of backlash about for practically gloryfying slavery. Sadly the house elf storylines of the later books are mostly not present in the future movies.

@SpartanandPudgey the look of horror on Ron's face during the whole spider scene is genuine. Rupert Grunt, the actor who plays Ron Weasley, is absolutely terrified of spiders. That whole scene must've been absolute mental torture for him.

The sad thing about her being the one to say this is that in the books she's utterly terrified of him and flat out wont say his name until WAY later. She always calls him by name in the movies. The movies removed every shred of relatability to her that the books had.
@@dalehammers4425 I've only read the books twice. Once myself starting in 2002 and then I read them to my son until he was old enough to read them himself. He's 20 now so it's been about 10 years since we read them together. Maybe I'll reread them once I'm finished the GoT books.

@@dalehammers4425 Dumbledore actually said it in the 1st book and this change also made Hermione's character inconsistent in the 5th movie. The screenwriter Kloves was really biased for Hermione and most people complain that he gave Ron's good traits/lines to her, but this line always stuck out the most to me because the wording sounded too much like it came from a wise elder who speaks in an old-timey manner rather than a student.
The 5th movie was the only film not written by Kloves and we get the scene where Hermione finally learns to speak Voldemort's name without fear. That moment was one of Hermione's character development in the book, so Kloves trying to incorporate Dumbledore's wise words through her in the 2nd film was a mistake.
@@flyingstapler1241 I know Dumbledore said it, but that didnt make Hermione less terrified of it lol. And I actually think that Kloves ruined Hermione's character by making her so flawlessly perfect, she gets zero growth throughout the movies and its a shame.
I still remember watching Oprah and the eat slugs scene was shown in advance of the movie release 😂 The trio talked about how Rupert had to spit out so many slugs, but I think the production team made the slugs different flavours?? 😂
16:39 I don't think I ever caught the foreshadowing of Lockhart saying, "Remember that" And then at the end of the movie him being hit with his own obliviate curse, that makes you forget everything. Not even remembering his own name.

I started watching you guys with Game of Thrones and I'm so excited you're doing this series. I just wanted to say that Spartan really picks up on a lot of subtle hints or foreshadowing on things. I first noticed it in GOT and I've noticed it in Breaking Bad as well, and now with Harry Potter.

Love both your takes and discussion. When the answers come, you'll feel so fulfilled when you realize the full story of what's going on. The story series is so deep and planned from the beginning.
My only complaint throughout the movies is they don't make Ron as competent as he is in the books. He is more of a comedic relief in the movies. More so in some to come. So excited to go through these with yall. Book 3 kicks it up a notch.
Same for Ginny actually. They make her some meek quiet little girl in the movies where in the books she's an exploding volcano that everyone is utterly terrified of.
For me, the world building in this universe is INCREDIBLE. A huge part of the appeal is that it's a world within our own world, so you can be sitting at a train station, and your imagination lets you think of a secret entrance etc The amount of minute details that JK Rowling has thought about, is insane. Everywhere you look, is a funny wordplay thing, or a pun. The magic (no pun intended) in the movies, is that JK Rowling insisted on an ALL British cast, and that the vast majority of the actors returned again, and again and again. There were a few exceptions, like actors passing away, or being recast. As such, you see the kids grow in each movie. The first couple of movies, they're children, and they're pretty faithful to the books. The third onwards, they're more teenagers / young adults, and the movies vary more away from the books. After you've seen all eight movies, I'd suggest reacting to a few unofficial Harry Potter videos about the series.
I feel like there is a disconnect & I've seen others comment the same & I think it's due to the popularity of the books & then the next jump in popularity due to the films and that had to have effected how she shaped and matured the story. I think a lot of the after books content, retconning & extended universe feel flat and felt like it was for checks. That said, JKR knows what a woman is so I support her being such a strong force for women.

So no spoilers here but some clarification. 1) ancient magic - when Harry mother protected Harry from voldemort, her sacrifice triggered as an automatic defense against voldemort specifically that makes it impossible for voldemort to touch him. It's basically a protection spell in the blood of Harry Potter. 2) Tom Riddle - Riddle is his muggle father. He hated being mixed blooded and changed his name from his father's. 3) Lucius is his first name. 4) Dobby - the house Elves are super powerful and don't need a wand to do magic since they are magic. During a war in the past, they became subservient to Wizards. I dont know how they don't accidentally free elves everytime its laundry day.

At the end of the movies, they leave for end of year break. (Summer Vacation) Remember this book was written with 12-year-olds in mind. Each book covers one year later.
I see the first two movies as more world and character building. The third is a tone change. Four is where everything changes. The end movies seem like totally different movies from the first. Plus you get to see the actors grow with the characters it’s really a unique series.

So to clear any possible confusion about the terms:
Mudblood is a slur for Muggle-born witch/wizard meaning a wizard/witch born to 2 non magical parents (Hermione).
Half-Blood refers so to a witch/wizard who has known Muggle or Muggle-born parents or grandparents (Harry. His mother was muggle-born).
Pure-Blood is a witch/wizard who is born into a purely wizarding family (Ron).
There is also a Squib that refers to a person born to magical parents but has no magical ability themselves. I believe there is a deleted scene from this movie that shows that Filch is actually a Squib.

They switched to daylight savings in Australia last Sunday, so it is indeed one hour earlier. If you live in the Northern hemisphere and you country switches between daylight savings and normal time chances are it's gonna be even earlier once you switch to winter time.

It is totally natural for you to not connect wholly in the first couple of movies because, honestly, they are wish-fulfilment for the kids reading the books and watching the movies. However, much like Tolkien's writing changed between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, Rowling's writing also began to develop a less contrived, and more advanced style as her skill deepened, as her audience aged, and as she fleshed out her fictional world.
I'd like to make one request of you as a subscriber: ask your questions by all means, but also put a bit of respect on Rowling's name and don't make the mistake of presuming stuff that you notice is an oversight. Sometimes, the movies just don't have the space to explain all the stuff that you discover in the books, sadly. For many of your questions, there very good answers. For instance, civil rights are not the same in the wizarding world as they are in the real world; house elves are bound to families by magical contracts. Dobby could not use his magic against the Malfoys without causing himself great suffering and extreme dishonour amongst the house-elf communities (even warning Harry about "danger" caused him to have to self-harm). Whilst someone like Dumbledore may view the ownership of house-elves to be a sort of antiquated tradition, and especially may find Lucius Malfoy's treatment of Dobby as distasteful, the wizarding culture is totally distinct from ours and the relationships between house-elves and wizards are complicated. For many house-elves, losing the family you serve is the worst imaginable outcome.
Great reaction, overall. I'm super excited for you guys to start experiencing the rest of the movies (which I personally think are all pretty good after this point). As for feeling a bit teased about Dumbledore, try to enjoy the anticipation if you can, rather than letting it frustrate you. It will be worth the wait ;)

There's a difference between Muggle and Muggleborn. Muggles are regular people with no wizarding powers. Hermione's parents are Muggles as well as Harry's maternal grandparents (Lilly's parents).
Muggleborns (or 'Mudbloods' which is a derogatory term equivalent to the N word in the real world) are witches or wizads who are the children of Muggles. Hermiome and Harry's mother, Lilly, are muggleborns.
Lilly was a witch. Harry is half blood because his father was a pure blood (the Potters are an old pureblood family) and his mother was muggleborn making him half blood.
Voldemort is also a half blood because his mother was a pureblood witch but his father was a full Muggle (not a wizard).
Houselves are actually more powerful than wizards but they don't use their powers against wizards because they have been enslaved by wizards into servitude. It has been engrained in them that their purpose is to serve wizards and being freed or attacking their masters is a foul and shameful act. Dobby is an exception. Other elves are not like Dobby who are happy to be freed.
Hogwarts is actually maintained by an army of houselves. They clean the castle and manage the kitches. They're the ones who cook the meals.
Harry can't call Dumbledore because he's not there because of malfoys dad

Slytherin doesn’t mean your bad or evil. The traits are comradery. And famous for helping one another achieve one another’s goals. A future returning teacher was also famous for collecting students from all houses to help them socially network to achieve their goals and reach their full potential. Many English professors are exactly like this too. ❤
It is true that Gryffindors, like any other house, can make mistakes and do messed up things. However, the same can be said for members of any other house. The important thing is how they learn from their mistakes & grow as people. Additionally, while Gryffindors may have a reputation for being cocky or overconfident, they also have a strong sense of loyalty and bravery that drives them to do great things.
As for Hufflepuff, while its members are often seen as kind and hardworking, this doesn't mean that they are without flaws or negative aspects. Hufflepuffs can sometimes be too trusting or naive, and they may struggle with assertiveness or standing up for themselves. However, these weaknesses are balanced by their loyalty and dedication to their friends and family.
Slytherin is often viewed as the "bad" house, but in reality, its members are just as capable of doing good as anyone else. Slytherins are often resourceful and ambitious, and they can be very dedicated to achieving their goals. However, this can sometimes lead them to make morally questionable decisions or pursue power at any cost. But as with any other house, there is a wide range of personalities and values within Slytherin, and it is unfair to generalize all Slytherins as being evil or bad.
Ultimately, the Hogwarts houses are a way of exploring different personality types and values within the wizarding world. Each house has its own strengths and weaknesses, and when they work together, they can achieve great things.
