Converting the fan to electric makes a big difference in throttle response and parasitic loss. Especially when you are beating on it and the fan clutch is engaged.
Those E36 i6's have a "fan delete mod" where you put in a cooler thermostat, and WaterWetter for more efficient cooling. If you don't live in an area where you have bumper to bumper traffic, and can always have decent airflow through the radiator, you can lose the fan entirely. Pretty common in E36 forums
Nah, unless you're making pisspoor hp the loss is negligible and you get way more airflow from a single clutch fan with a shroud than even a dual efan setup. Also a clutch fan is way less likely to fail and cause overheating. the only real advantage of going to electric fans is space
@@PhantomPhaze pretty sure on the cooling episode if money pit miata zach points out its all about the cfm of your fans, convinced me to put a dual electric fan shrouded on my sbc350, I never had issues before but my engine definitely stays a constant temp now
Don't forget to mention that when you swap a clutch fan for a Electric fan you get more horsepower! Also if you redo an entire cooling system on a vehicle that you are going to be pushing hard, swap the ethylene glycol based coolant for a propylene glycol based coolant after a very thorough flush. It cools better and is easier to clean up in case of leaks.
When I put the electric fans on my Jeep I went with the same setup. I hooked my green wire ( the override switch) to my AC relay. So when the AC compressor kicked in the fan came on to pull the air through the condenser. But over all great setup for anyone looking to keep it cool.

Can we do a video comparing the different types of catch cans? In most cases you want the catch can to route back into the intake (for the negative pressure). But there are cans that use a breather straight to the atmosphere. As well as cans that route back to the intake and ALSO have a breather to the atmosphere at the same time (which doesn't make much sense).
I did that, had an inline breather going back to the intake, cause me to throw IAC codes, but no performance change, took the breather out and no codes sense
@@NaotheKitsune My thought is that once you throw a breather onto the system before the intake, you've negated the negative pressure. Might as well just vent the PCV to atmosphere at that point. But would be curious on Donut's take.
The e36 'PCV' hose pumps oil vapor into the intake... remove the throttle body and look at all the puddles of oil on the bottom of the intake manifold. They may cause a 'DANGER TO MANIFOLD WELDS' message on your laptop. I have a small filter on the end of the shortened PCV hose ventin' to atmos because blowby air don't burn.
I don't think the negative pressure is the goal. If I understand it correctly these are just emissions systems rerouting partially combusted material back into the combustion chamber. The main concept of a catch can is to allow any oil that may blow through to not be able to just follow a tube back into the manifold. By having the tube enter a container (catch can) at the top and then having an exit on the other side at the top with a gap in the middle of the line, any oil that flows through the entrance will collect in the can instead of going back into the manifold. You can also eliminate the rerouting back to the manifold as long as you aren't blocking the PCV off entirely which would causes gasses to build up and find their own way out which is bad (pretty sure Zach did that on the Miata then added catch cans).
While im sure a lot of us miss the front yard garage aspect of Money Pit, it really is cool to see Zach working on the car with a shop and the right tools (besides a real lift) I think you can tell he is slightly less frustrated with long jobs and he is more willing to do the harder jobs that suck up more time cause hes not working in his driveway all the time.
I have an 05 RX8. They said the plastic radiator would become brittle and they weren't lying. I was able to buy a returned Mishimoto radiator from Amazon for only $100. I lucked out and it was in relatively perfect condition. Best thing I've ever broken and replaced.
Remember to always do some research on your specific vehicle and application before doing an electric fan conversion. Many cars love it with no issues or an improvement in cooling. But many do not and will often run hotter than before or even overheat completely without the factory engine fan and shroud. Well designed engine driven fans are often significantly more powerful than even the best electric fan setups, and while in some cars this is a waste of horsepower and engine response, in others it’s the only solution to keep the engine cool.
I was just telling my wife, I enjoy watching stuff like this even tho in most cases I know it already because I randomly learn stuff. I put an entirely new cooling system in a 72 Nova and when bleeding it, I never thought about turning on the heater to bleed the heater core
There’s still a few plastic flanges and joiners to go before it’s all metal. Some you can bypass others you have to live with. I just finished a full overhaul of my e36’s cooling system. Every hose every joiner, I ended up bypassing my cars heater core as the 3 joiners that vent thru to the cabin are plastic joiners and become brittle over time. Wonder if you guys will come across this seeing the state of some of your other plastics. Also I’ve heard mixed things about the mishimoto radiators, some people love them some people say the quality just isn’t there. The stock radiator would probably have been okay with a bigger fan, they have a bleed screw too so all you need is a flat head and a few hours of free time to properly bleed your system. Love the videos guys 👌🏼
I just started watching the video but I gotta say if you want to tune an engine and make more power then that means more heat so an improved cooling system is a must
zach’s videos are honestly the best thing-i’m glad these videos you guys pump out are free; they’re made with television quality, and we’re blessed to not have to pay to watch each episode
I think the premise they're trying to get at is the average joe working on his car at their house so by not putting it on a lift it shows us that it is in-fact possible
there should be some playlist for those of us beginners to learn stuff like these, i have never changed any fluid on my car before, but after some of these kind of videos i dare my self to start working on my own car
YES!YES!YES!! If you drive like a old lady...not so much. But if you drive aggressively on a constant basis....a high performance cooling system is one of the 1st mods right after brakes and sneakers that I always do.

If Zach doesn’t drop a S65 into the E36 rally car, I might cry.
Wow, Zach has been busy handling two cars right now
I was just telling my wife, I enjoy watching stuff like this even tho in most cases I know it already because I randomly learn stuff. I put an entirely new cooling system in a 72 Nova and when bleeding it, I never thought about turning on the heater to bleed the heater core
Thanks!
Freaking finally. It's only been multiple weeks
Ah yes the thermostat removal tool the most important part of any garage!
That mishimoto quality, gotta file down a brand new piece.
I just started watching the video but I gotta say if you want to tune an engine and make more power then that means more heat so an improved cooling system is a must
Completely forgot about this series since it hasn't upload in how many weeks.
I follow my dad’s tutelage: You replace the thermostat when it dumps you at the side of the road. But this approach has its upside.
“Difficulty level: low-ish”
**proceeds to dismantle entire cooling system**
I think one of my favorite aspects of Money Pit is the fact that it is just the boys hanging out and being themselves
zach’s videos are honestly the best thing-i’m glad these videos you guys pump out are free; they’re made with television quality, and we’re blessed to not have to pay to watch each episode
I also like Jeremiah's deep dive videos on car parts
Honestly with all the money y’all spend on stuff I still can’t believe donut hasn’t invested in a cheap 2 pole lift lol
No shit.
I think the premise they're trying to get at is the average joe working on his car at their house so by not putting it on a lift it shows us that it is in-fact possible
@@saucymcrib4047 that's a fair point.
"Now let's go back to money pit."
Facebook ad: *no.*
Day 418 of asking James to do an Up to speed on his Dad
Day ? of supporting Pagani Gaming
Oh boy I think he’s waiting 2 more days to drop the episode
Moneypit is back babbyyy!! Mechanic Jesus let's gooo
My E46 cooling system just failed so this is definitely going to get a rewatch when my parts come in.
When you finish, you should actually take it to a real rally
5:40 i should call her….
Should've gotten a new BMW, the new giant grilles would be able to supply air for the radiator
A Money Pit upload is the best birthday gift I could ask for :D
there should be some playlist for those of us beginners to learn stuff like these, i have never changed any fluid on my car before, but after some of these kind of videos i dare my self to start working on my own car
You can’t call them “nice” aftermarket bits when you’re using Mishi🤣, I guess they redeem themselves a bit with their warranty though
I don’t follow?
@@dtmfool789 I feel as if my statement was pretty self explanatory
@@averyd7383 no it’s not. it doesn’t really make sense
This is the only series I watch on donut it was a very sad couple of weeks without it
I love that you include the others more into the videos!
So glad to see Zach again ! I have missed him lot. Can t wait to see another episode of Money Pit !
YES!YES!YES!! If you drive like a old lady...not so much. But if you drive aggressively on a constant basis....a high performance cooling system is one of the 1st mods right after brakes and sneakers that I always do.
Donut has you covert whatever you like. Off-road, rally, street you name it they have it
This video came literally at the best time. I was like 5 minutes away from hitting the buy button
Those 2 little extra holes on the WP are for threading in a couple water pump pulley bolts (m6) in, pops it right out ;)
Usually. There is a pitcock to drain the coolant from the lowest part of the system, the bottom of the radiator . That is where I usually drain it from and you get most of the liquid out.
The builds work better over 2days. There’s better energy when complete, instead of everyone being tired, stressed, and over it.
always gotta know when to walk away and take a break so you feel eager to work on it when you return 🤙
