  • Yamaha have updated the famous TMax for 2018, with the SX version available in Australia.
    True to the spirit of a maxi-scooter, the TMax 530 SX is designed for long distances and great comfort, with a wide seat, two footwell positions, Ride Modes, and a Traction Control System.
    A twin-cylinder powerplant offers strong performance, especially for a restricted LAMS (Learner) machine, with supersport style brakes offering plenty of stopping power.
    That extra width makes the TMax a little less suitable for slipping through traffic in the inner-city suburbs, but it's still a formidable commuter, with great balance and power delivery from down low.

    Never considered a scooter. Being able to ride it on open roads makes it a great alternative to other bikes. Pretty cool machine.

    Great machine I ride a GSA, WHICH IS A BIG OLE GAL. The Max was a lot of fun with as much kit as my Bm. Could easily live with this as city riding on a big bike you may as well use a car. Handling is also very good reliability is second to none.

    I've just bought a DX as a daily runner and I just love it to bits. It's great in traffic, offers good performance (for a 530cc, two cylinder bike that uses CVT), very good weather protection and the handling is amazingly good (and I also own a big Duc so handling is something I've really come to appreciate). I didn't really give the Kymco AK550 a second glance, it might go from 0-100 a few milliseconds faster but the plastic and finish looked cheap while Yamaha's overall finish was much better. I did like the Honda X-Adv and I took some time to decide whether I should go for a TMax or that. The XAdv was more of a motorbike and I was looking for a proper scooter as a daily runabout and that's what pushed me towards buying the yamaha... but it was close.

      gwynnus Sorry only just saw your question in regards to the 16gr weights in the cvt. Yes they make a difference to the initial lag in the cvt the bike pulls harder lower down in the rev range. I got them at 10k replaced them at 20k but didn't need to they looked fine will get 15gr put in at 40k. I've done 36k currently. 40k service is around 2k something to look forward too.

    I haven't ridden the T Max but I own the Suzuki Burgman 650 Executive and I feel it sets a high standard for maxi-sized scooter riding. Mine is a 2009 model so I assume there have been some improvements since then. First the 650 is quick off the mark and can pull away from the lights quickly. It is not a heavy bike - I think 220kgs wet so it works well in the city. The fold in mirrors are ideal for getting to the front of the queue at the lights (if lane splitting is legal in your area). There is also an electrically adjustable screen which lowered gives good air flow at low speed but keeps the wind off at high speed. There is plenty of on board storage with compartments in the dash and under seat storage for 2 full face helmets. There is ABS with 2 disks up front and single rear as well as a parking brake. Being a scooter the CVT means twist and go. On the open road this machine holds its own with the cruisers, sports bikes and tourers and handles the twisties on the back roads with ease. It has along wheel base, not your average pizza delivery scooter. I suggest cruise control since touring is the reason to own this bike. It would make a long day's riding more comfortable. This would not be difficult to add as an off the shelf bolt on from Bosch or other manufacturer alternatively a throttle lock/cruise control after market fit would be the next best option.

    It mostly hot in Africa and some countries around the world, it will be great improvement when Yahama is able to install cooling system with the handle and the seat

    Just a word of warning... The service costs of Tmax ownership are pretty high. I have a 2016 iron max and have done 25k in that time.The 20k service was $1400 alone not including new brake pads brembo work better than the OEM pads and Dr pulley 16gr weights for the variator to take the lag out of the cvt transmission you can add another $250 for that plus around $600 for tyres Pirelli. If you use it as a commuter as I do you need to factor that into ownership.

      Hey Adam, that's a good point, scooter servicing is normally a bit more expensive than on a motorcycle. I'm not sure if you'd need different pulley weights on the 2018 model, as it was very crisp off the throttle, but it might becomes more necessary as the miles add up. How long did you find your brake pads and tyres lasted for commuting?

      BikeReview.com.au Hey Guys, Pad life from the brembo sintered pads is over 10k with 1/4 left to go for the front and over 20k for the rear pads. Tyres been through 3 sets Dunlops gpr100 that it came with around 10k Pirelli diablos about the same 10k and now on Pirelli Rossos that have been the best by far performance wise about 5k on those. Deep breath total servicing and tyres cost for 25k of ownership. $3700 in 2yrs. Hope that helps. Love your content keep it up. Cheers

      Welp.. That's sounds expensive! However in the most of Asians country the ownership costs are surprisingly low enough and can be considered as a reasonable..

      Well the general service is not that expensive but I guess the big service where you need to change belts and tyres would rack up the bill somewhat. Did the 16g DP sliders make any difference?

    you should see if you can test the Honds X-ADV 750.

    Very good review there. I'm wondering though, what about that seat for shorter people? Like 1.70 for example? Is it going to be fine on traffic lights where's you have to stop and reach the ground or maybe a pain in the ass?

      Good question! A large part of it comes down to where on the seat you're sitting and how you manage coming to a stop. On smaller scooters you'll get away with putting both feet down, while on the TMax, especially for shorter riders you may need to get in the habit of moving to the front of the seat (or shifting slightly to one side) and putting one foot down. So I think once used to it, you wouldn't have any problems, unless you were really short. Also the balance of the TMax is really exceptional, so I don't think it would cause any unnecessary stress, even if you only had a toe down.
      On the old Iron Max I could shift right to the front of the seat for an easy reach to the ground with both feet, but this model has a console with buttons that you really don't want to sit on (although you still can). It's a bit of a shame they didn't have the console sitting a bit lower in this regard, but it's not a huge issue.

      Old Iron Max didnt have the issue with the button console for the fuel and the seat so that made a bit more comforatble on the stops and stop-begin parts. I'm 1.70 so im guessing if I have any issues with it. Ill definately try before buy but still thanks for the advise there and the good points. From your perspective as you rode it already, do you think Ill have serious issues there or not? Thanks again man! :)

    Does it have cruise control ? very important equipment on long drives.

      I'm afraid not, the SX as tested doesn't, however the DX does. We haven't got the DX in the Australian market, which is the higher spec option with cruise control, and heated grips and seat as standard.

    Could a backrest be added along with top and even side bags to make a half decent long distance touring rig?

      Yamaha have a rack that'll suit a topbox and would make fitting panniers easier, although weight distribution may be a concern. Not sure about the back rest however, for the rider if you move back you hit the back of your seat where the pillion seat begins, while you might be able to add a small cushion to any top box added for the pillion.

    As nice as it is, it is about the same price with c650 gt. Not sure if it's worth choosing over the bmw which comes with heated seats, hand warmers, adjustable windscreen etc etc. And believe it or not, servicing costs much less. It is a nice bike but hard to justify the price tag. Especially when you consider the price tag of an mt-09

      The MT-09 is pretty exceptional value, but a bit of a hard comparison for the TMax, I can't quite see them being the same audience, although I do see your point.
      We're still hanging out to ride the BMW for comparison, and heated grips and seat are pretty cool standard items. Interesting to hear that the BMW is cheaper to service too, thanks for sharing!

    This seems like a good place to ask...
    I have just bought a 2017 (2018) Tmax 530 DX brand new. Don't congratulate me. I'm very disappointed. Between about 3,750 - 4,750 RPM it sounds like a broken washing machine. It seems to be the way they are made. I thought the test-ride model had been modified, but now it seems not. I cannot keep the bike if I cannot make it quiet. Who buys a scooter for relaxed cruising and then listens to an incessant drone noise at cruising RPM?
    QUIET exhaust recommendations, PLEASE!

    I've bought a Yamaha Tmax 530cc 2014 but the bike does not have enough space to fit a helmit under the seat

      Here in Australia it's a 'Learner Legal' or LAMS compliant machine, with under 35kW (around 34), so it should be A2 compliant as well. Best to check with your local dealer, or manufacturer website though to make sure it's the same for your region.

      In Australia under the LAMS (Leaner Approved Motorcycle Scheme) you can ride up to 660cc with a power to weight ratio of 150KW based on an average weight (of the rider) of 90kgs. That applies in most states. In the ACT it is just the 150KW restriction and as I understand it in WA (Western Australia) learners are restricted to 250cc although I thought I had seen somewhere that they had recently changed that to the 660cc/150KW. My advice would be to check the website of the department responsible for vehicle registration in the state you live in or are thinking of getting a bike for.

      That does seem unnecessarily restrictive. The 660cc/150kw thing here seems to have the approval of makers, riders, clubs and law makers. You have to do a pre-rider training course (8hours I think) before you can get a Learners Permit, then the rules vary state by state@@MI-pk3iu
