Bell's palsy: One Loyola patient's story

- Audrey Rex talks about how she noticed the onset of Bell's palsy.. At first she was having trouble pronouncing 'b' and 'p,' and soon lost her ability to smile. After six months she had no movement on one side of her face. She met with Dr. John Leonetti, director of Cranial Base Surgery at Loyola and a well-renowned Bell's palsy specialist. Dr. Leonetti explains how Bell's palsy, or idiopathic facial paralysis, causes acute facial paralysis on one side of the face. It is thought to be caused by a virus. The nerve swells within its bony sleeve and paralyzes itself. Audrey had the surgery to remove the bony sleeve, which relieved pressure on the nerve. She soon started to recover movement in her face. She met with a therapist to improve her muscle function. Her motivation has paid off. Audrey has recovered beautifully. I was diagnosed with bell's palsy in 2019. I made full recovery in just 2 months. No doubt It was one of the most horrible experience of my life.. I was alone..far away from home when it happened...The first symptom I had was that I couldn't move my lips.. then I felt terrible pain on the right side of my face..☹️ I thot i was having stroke and I was going to die in a minute ☹️ I still remember that time I kept saying psalm 23:4 & 2 timothy 1:7 in my heart and that comforted me alot...👏 I was prescribed corticosteroids and some painkillers and did facial therapy for two months. I am perfectly fine now 🙏🏽

My son (12) was just diagnosed today. He won't stop crying because he keeps saying he lost his smile. I feel so bad for my baby, he never gets a break. Every year my boy seems to have a new illness or problem. I hope he makes a full recovery.
How is your son doing?
Did he make a full recovery? I was just diagnosed with this four days ago and honestly I understand what he meant with losing his smile. I look completely different and it's frightening.
@@petrawitty5575 he's doing great! Thank you for asking 😊
@@unicornmadness6286 yes, he made a full recovery in under 2 weeks thank God. They added an antiviral to his treatment as well. Not sure if that helped, but I was willing to try anything for him. I know it's scary, and I really feel for you. Hang in there. It should go away within a couple weeks to a month.
those illnesses you mentioned, coupled with bell's palsy, indicate a downward trend. you must change your family's diet, eliminate packaged "food", and start massaging, exercising to get proper blood flow.
I was also diagnosed with bell's pulsy last week. Luckily, I went to the doctor and they gave me medicine and told me to visit a therapist who will massage my face. My therapist taught be some facial exercises which I need to do every 2 hours and I'm kind of recovering. Some people sadly don't have money for visiting doctor/therapist.. i want to help people like that with what I know. Your condition might be more severe than me or a better but I'll tell you what exercises I do in my face. Hope it helps it, you can try whatever i suggest but it's always better to visit an actual doctor if you can! 😇
1. Try to lift both of your eyebrows, while having bell's pulsy, it's difficult to move one of your eyebrow. For me, bell's pulsy happened in the left side of my face meaning that the left side of my face is kinda paralysed. In the beginning, I had to take medicine from doctor. I couldn't move/lift my left eyebrow completely. After taking medicine, it was a bit better. You have to try hard to lift both of your eyebrows, do it 20 times every 2 hours.
2. Whichever eyebrow you can't lift, massage it with your hand/fingers.
3. Try to scrunch your nose, like when people are angry, they make their nose trills big and furrow their eyebrows. "😠| 👃/ 🐽 - ↗️↘️" like these emojis. Also do that every 2 hours.
4. Inhale and keep the air in ur mouth for 10 seconds, it's okay if the air leaks. Then, exhale (also do every 2 hours.)
5. Massage the cheek in which you have bell's pulsy. How to massage: with your hand/fingers, move your cheek upwards your ear. Also do it every 2 hours.
6. Drink water with a straw
7. Try to blow balloons 🎈
These are what I know, good luck! You are not alone, best of luck! 💜
hope you are better.

i was diagnosed with bells palsy recently. my paralysed side hurts like hell before i took my medication. they only gave me prednisolone. finished it in 10 days. first day i took 12 pills. they told me to cut it down 2 pills each day. i took it every morning after i ate breakfast. then i'll do face exercise and massage everytime i can. i do it for about 10-15 minutes then i rest and repeat. i also used eye drop and eyepatch but i took it off when i sleep. also, dont sleep on your paralysed side. i recovered completely after 2 weeks! goodluck to everyone who was diagnosed with it!
can you recover without medication? i mean is facial exercise enough for recovery?
@@anuarmohamed7590 im not sure about that. but my left side already paralysed for 4 days before i went to the clinic and start taking my medication. for 4 days, ive been doing facial massage and exercise only, thinking that i can get better even without medication but it doesnt get any better at all. so i think it would be better to take medication. you would recover faster with it too.

I was just diagnosed with this I’ve been so depressed and sad and in pain thank you for this video I pray that mine doesn’t last long I’m so aggravated and feel so helpless .
When I had it I constantly just wanted to know when it would get better, my friend told me to start telling myself I’m beautiful even if I didn’t feel it and I was so depressed, it took me a few months but I started the steroids late so maybe that’s why it took longer for me to get better. Stay strong and during this time remember to treat yourself to great massages, spend time with people you love and make you feel good to be around. Really pamper yourself, my smile is fully back and I’m so grateful it’s better now Alhamdulilah, I pray everyone going through it has a speedy recovery!!
I got diagnosed today with Bell’s palsy I really feel insecure at the moment but hoping for a fast recovery
Almost a month into mine now. I’ve made a massive amount of recovery so far, I look just about like my old self again. The main issue is my eye though. I still can’t blink properly on the right side and with this cold weather at the moment my eye waters loads when I’m outside. I literally have tears streaming down my face every time I step outside, which is most of the time since I’m at university. Bloody annoying but hey, I’m recovering at least.
That’s good, I was diagnosed yesterday and I hope I can recover fast too :)
Mc donalds Crusty burger I’m sorry to hear that. You’ll get through it, just take it easy and get a lot of rest. I’d also avoid reading into it too much. I made that mistake and convinced myself that I had Ramsay hunt syndrome (significantly worse). The best thing to do is to go to a GP get steroids asap. Other than that all you can really do is rest and let it run its course. It may seem hopeless in the first week, but recovery can be quite spontaneous. I hope you get better soon
Are you okay now

iv had it 2 years back. Still have symptoms to the left eye as well as cheek. I seems to have recovered almost 80% and still noticing slight improvements. But the recovery process is extremely slow in case you had delayed the initial medication. So as soon as it happens rush to the doctor and start recommended medication immediately. I wasted 4 to 5 days until i saw the Doctor which resulted in a very slow recovery.
#vix I dint take medicines and u r ryt about recovery it's very slow I m close to third month and 50% recover only
@Jonathan Lara in short its a very very very slow recovery. The best thing i can recommend is do facial exercises and do some physiotherapy. U will start seeing improvements. but a full 100% recovery is on chance incase u have missed the immidiate medication. But none the less you will see more improvements day by day.
@Jonathan Lara after how many month u recovered
@Jonathan Lara most of the recoveries happened upto how many months
Vix yes that’s the number one thing they recommend! It’s important that steroids and antiviral is started within 48 hrs of symptoms, the sooner the better.
I had Bell's Palsy in 2003. The doctor thought I had a stroke since I couldn't feel the left side of my tongue, chest, arm or face. The night before it struck, I was having a lot of twitching in the affected eye and also it would matter up quite a bit.
The next morning I felt horrible, had to slide off the bed carefully because I couldn't feel my upper right extremities. I crawled to the corded phone I had at the time and pulled it down to me from the shelf it was on and pressed a number, it was my sister, I couldn't talk good and the last thing I heard her say is she is on the way. I think I passed out from feeling so sick because I don't remember anything until I heard banging on my front door. I crawled to it and barely got the lock turned. She rushed me to a hospital and I was told I definitely looked like I had a bad stroke. They did MRI. It was clear. I was diagnosed with B.P. It's been a long time but I'm still with drooping on the right side of my face and eye looks smaller than the other one. I'm learning just now that there is a procedure that may help. I'm very self conscious about it and get called droopy face, squint eye, freak so I try to keep from smiling too big so its not as noticeable.

I hope this works for me. Been living with Bel's palsy almost my entire life. Been having it since I was 9 because of a brain tumor to radiation and chemotherapy with damage to pituitary gland and hypothyroidism. 21 years now since then.
My symptoms: can't close my eye fully no strength to keep eye closed either (I can open the eye just by flicking it with my finger lightly), very tiny smile, no cheek indication, no eye brow movement, and a few others. Other symptoms I'm not sure if it's directly link to Bel's palsy : dry eye (I have tears from just simple exercise like jogging, eating spices or well flavored food not exactly spicy foods, doing physical work like gardening or lawn mowing to mainly from simple body exhaustion if not little sweat), runny nose (happens when body is at little exhaustion also from just simple exercise or sports, from eating mild + spicy foods). All symptoms on right side of face.
It really gets to you when you interact with other people.
Tutored little kids: You smile at them they look at you as if you are doing something weird. Makes you give up the effort of even trying to smile.

Just diagnosed with Bells Palsy the day after Christmas. My first symptom was that my tongue felt funny. I didn’t think anything of it until I woke up the next morning and my right side of my face wasn’t working. I went straight to the ER and was prescribed Prednisone and an antiviral med. The pain is intense on the right side and the headache is terrible. I wish doctors knew more about this condition. It’s very stressful to go through this!
Danielle same happened to me. I was diagnosed with it on Christmas Day. Noticed my tongues felt as if it had been scalded from a hot drink, next thing you know my face is seizing up. Finally starting to recover now, got a fairly significant bit of movement back over the past few days. Still unable to smile but it’s getting better so I suppose I must be quite lucky
Im 27 and its been a year add me on snapchat so i csn show you @ cooperro562
Danielle any recovery now? A lot of my face is relatively normal again. Still a lot of things I can’t do though. I still struggle to blink properly on my right eye, but I can just about close it when I try. My smiles pretty much back which is the important part, at a point where no one would really notice I have anything wrong with me now. Still certain muscles I can’t move though for instance, I can’t downturn my lips and still can’t puff out my cheeks. I’d say I’m about 65-70% recovered. How about you? Hope you’ve started to recover
Major Bjork The pain has gone away but I still have no improvement in my movement yet. I suppose it’s just going to take a lot of time to heal. I think if I have improved it’s just so little that maybe it’s not as noticeable to me yet. The neurologist can’t see me until March 😫 so I don’t know how much damage was done to the nerve. It has gotten easier to sleep with my eye patch though and the dryness isn’t as bad as it was. I’m glad you’re getting your smile back! That’s something I miss doing for sure!
Danielle I’m sorry to hear that. Don’t lose hope. Recovery can be spontaneous. For me I was sat on my phone and suddenly noticed that I could ever so slightly twitch my cheek; from there things slowly improved. It’s one of those things that take time unfortunately. @@TonyLV Bro goodluck i hope tommrow is the day u recover
Same happened to me, this is what my facial therapist and doctor told ,e to do:
So, one of your eye might be normal. You should shut both of ur eyes close but one will remain a little open (because of bell's pulsy) with your index finger, you will tap/press the eye which you can't close slowly. Because of pressing the eye, it'll close. Then you will slowly open both of your eyes again and repeat the process every 2 hours for recovery. Another is, in the downside of your eyebrow, there is a place where women draw the eyeliner wing. Right? Over there, with the help of the finger tip of your thumb, you will press it then move it a little to the left side (whichever eye you ahve problem closing) and also repeat it every 2 hours. This is what I do, your condition might be more severe so it's better if you talk with a doctor. Hope you recover very soon! 😇💗
I came down with BP 8 weeks ago. My smile is returning slowly but I still am not able to close my left eye. Its flickering a little but just not able to blink completely. I havent seen any physio or eye specialist as yet as this happened during covid and I am still awaiting contact from specialists? Hopefully my eye will improve soon, I have been doing weekly progress videos and the improvement is positive for my lower muscles around my mouth. Fingers crossed the eye will catch up soon.
Are you recovered from Bell's palsy
I currently have Bell’s palsy is has been going on for three days. Luckily I went to the hospital and has been giving lots of meds to take it has been getting better but it is still hard to go to sleep and to drink out of a cup I suggest anyone who is going through this to be patient and drink out of a straw
hello, are you fully recovered now?
Same thing happened to me, went to the ER yesterday and got diagnosed with it. So hard to drink now, I use a straw and eat in small portions. So uncomfortable but am dealing with it. Hope you have a speedy recovery.
i was diagnose 7 years ago and it still hasnt go away. is there a way i can get my smile back.
It's been 4 years but still I haven't recovered fully
I first got bells palsey at 3 and it flares up every 10 years
mine was at 13 , then i had one at 31 last year.
today is my third one at age of 32 , and i am depressed too.
hope you are doing OK.
I was diagnosed on 11-25-19 and it’s 12-29-19 and I still have it. Really so depressing I don’t know what else to do.
rontavius snipes I’ve noticed it seems to be in the winter a lot that people get diagnosed it’s weird! I got mine on December 25-26 2019!
Danielle you still dealing with it? I am. 1-18-2020
I got it on 12/30/19. At the 3 week mark, I began to notice slight muscle movement. I can furrow my eyebrows but not lift them. The corner of my mouth raises a teeny tiny bit when I smile with my lips closed. I can pucker my lips a little better and my face seems to be straightening out. I'm pretty frustrated with the medical care I've been receiving. No one knows what to do. I went to a physical therapist who said he hadn't seen a case in 15 years so he did a google search over his lunch break and determined that there was nothing he could do for me.
rontavius snipes sorry I didn’t see the message...yes I’m still affected by this! I heard it can take months and months for some cases 😖
DierMe00 it’s really insane how little the medical field knows about treating this! It really seems more common than they admit!
I got bell palsy 2 weeks ago it sucks I still can’t smile but I hope it goes away
Leo Martinez it will I had it few years back no one will ever notice when you do recover keep your head up and look up home therapies
you can smile you just smile different it makes you how you are theres nothing wrong with it i wish i had it
It went away after one month thank god makes me appreciate the little things in life
@@leomartinez5307 you became ugly again bells palsy makes you beatifiul i wish i had it
Thanks for your story. Really inspiring.. I decides to try a treatment at home and I do recommend using FaceRehab mobile application. I used it for facial exercise and it allows to you to track the facial muscle activity during time. Really helped me. Take care
It’s been almost a year and it’s not 100% percent gone. It started in like 2018 of August and I was in the 7th grade and now I’m in the 8th grade and it’s not 100% gone
It’s Destinee!! How did you treat it?
I found out I have this yesterday 🙏
I have mostly movement but I have dry eye after a year now and the doctor said it will always be there and nothing can cure it . Always gives me a head ache of sorts and fucks with my sinuses . It feels like a someone sticking a knife into my eye sometimes and its 24-7 , so its not fun stuff . I got it from shingles
I also got dry eyes after bell's palsy.
I was diagnosed with it 4 days ago. Taking MethylPrednisolone 1mg and Valacyclovir 1gm but no physical therapy. Dr. Says I don't need it. What I don't understand is how did I manage to hurt my nerve? I'm physical activity and have a gluten-free diet. Low carb, sugar and fat. Received
How is it not ??? Can u seeing improvement . I m also suffering from bells palsy from past 5 days 😢

I live in north Alabama. I’m 49 years old amd this just happened to me 2 days ago. Am I home health physical therapist assistant. Thankfully we have to wear a mask so no one can see my face but pronunciation somewhere and you can hear it. I am also a leader in my church and So many people say that my smile makes their day. This is horrible! Please refer me to a Dr in Birmingham or Huntsville Alabama that can do this surgery.
I had my first bell palsy when I was pregnant in 2014 but it still goes on and off
ashley ashantay when you were pregnant, how long did you take to recover?? Is my fifth week and I don’t see movements 😢 I’m 37 weeks pregnant
I remember when I could first move again a tiny twitch. No one else could see it but I was adamant. LOOK! HERRE! As I would point to the tiny crook in my cheek.
Likewise.
2 months have gone, I can't move
It's been almost a decade since my diagnosis. Took 1 month to get some movement. As nerves were regenerating it was painful having those electrical firing of the nerves and face & eye lid twitching. Regained full function of my face except for my upper lip as I described in my RUclips video of it. Got feeling in the upper lip but little to no movement which makes kissing the wife weird & awkward when u can't move the lip. Also get crocodile tears still every time I'm eating and it looks like I'm crying.
I suffering from bells palsy problem for the past 6 yrs.still not yet recovered completely.is it possible to recover completely.kindly suggest me.
Hi, Prabhu! Unfortunately, our doctors can't assess patients via e-mail or social media. But if you'll be in the Chicago area sometime in the future, you can request an appointment with one of them either online at www.loyolamedicine.org/appointment or by phone at 888-584-7888. Good luck! -Keisha

A virus that attacks your nerves, my palsy came after the flu vaccine, I question wether palsy is caused by a virus.
Holly Leeming flu vaccine only makes you produce antibodies, not get rid of it. And also it’s a flu vaccine not a virus vaccine, it can only hope to prevent flu viruses not other different viruses. The Bell’s palsy virus is most definitely not a flu virus, otherwise you would have the flu.
Cindy You may want too look at the ingredients in vaccines, I'm not buying the safe and effective they are pushing.
@@Shimeko13: Safety was bypassed. It’s a huge red flag when Pfizer & Moderna have clauses that they can’t be sued for any adverse effects from the Covid vaccine.
My husband's was after the flu vaccine as well. And now it seems to be a side effect of covid vaccine
Renee O'Day OK I'm aware a nurse in the US has just reported she has Bells Palsy after Covid shot and is advising people not too get it. Big Pharmaceutical have been promoting vaccines as safe and effective for years because they have immunity from lawsuits. Politicians don't care because both Democrats and Republicans receive campaign donations from Big pharmaceutical, and vaccine courts pay out for damage leaving taxpayers accountable for paying for injury, for something that is supposedly safe and effective. Many have family member that have been injured or they themselves have been injured, and many do not know that vaccine courts exist, and they are paying for them. I would like too know how many vaccine injuries have gone unreported, due to incompetence from medical doctors.
Can you quit the medications after you recover
