Hey buddy, if you heard the noise and or saw the smoke come out, it’s fried. Best thing to do is get another or just go back to points for the time being.
You show this just putting it in. But to get this to work, you have to re-time it, right? Possibly the timing might happen to land right where it should be, but then again, it might not. There's some variation in points adjustment anyway. Do you have a video adjusting the timing on the Pertronix unit? (I have a pertronix unit, but I figure your subscribers would want to see that.)
That’s a good point however by pulling the distributor with the clamp, the timing should be spot on. Of course it’s a good idea to double check your timing to ensure it’s correct. Setting the timing with a Pertronix vs points is the same procedure.
Slades VW Beetle thank you sir! In my opinion, the engine seems to idle and preform better with the electronic ignition. Again, my preference and experience.

Great instruction video. Thx. I just installed in my SVDA on my '73 Super Beetle. One thing I had to check was the coil resistance which Petronix advises must have a MIN 3 ohms. I didn't realise that until I received the module. The stock Bosch was only 2.8 ohms, so had to buy a High Energy Black Bosch coil which has 3.4 ohms.
I’m glad the video was able to help you out! One thing I’ve noticed was different Bosch could have a variation of values anywhere from the upper 2’s to almost 4 ohms.
@@notanotherrick No, you'll need to rotate it gently around the shaft, and then when it's aligned it will slide down. The inside of the magnetic rotor isn't round; it's shaped like the shaft, so it has four lobes.
This part number and install video is for a 009 distributor. Pertronix has a different part number for vacuum advance distributors. To set your timing with a vac advance distributor, you’d want to remove the vacuum hose and plug the hole on the carb.
I should of done this.. Monday my new distributor came in BUT it wont slide thru my dist clamp.. Its because the bolt is bent in the clamp and can't widen it 😩 sooo.. Perfect excuse to shop for a better nicer clamp lol

You mentioned quicker start ups.. That's one thing about my car, it doesn't start fast.. I haven't been able to try with the new distributor yet but i hope it fixes that
VW RICH FLAT4 it should help. If you’re battling a carb issue or running way too rich or lean, you may not see a difference. With electronic, the spark is stronger especially if you change out the coil to match the ignition module.
I'm having trouble with mine it's the vacuum version. The rotory arm won't sit lowto lock in on the shafts. In turn the cap won't fit on because of this 🤦🏼♂️
I had to sand a little bit inside the magnet ring so it would sit lower on the shaft. Then the distributor arm would fit correctly. But it supposed to be square inside of the ring to match the distributor shaft.
Brian Hall you don’t have to hit it does make it easier. The distributor can only go back into the drive inside the case one way. See if this video helps you out ruclips.net/video/ru36EM-fiBU/видео.html

I just installed a pertronic on my 72 2.0 Pinto with the Flame thrower coil as a kit I got it from ebay $128 . I reset the timing, drove it and it kicks ass, 80 miles later it starts backfiring and powering down on my way to the swap meet, tac jumps to zero then back up to normal. I pull over and car idles fine. but as i get in the gas it's having trouble picking up to speed while I'm letting the clutch out, I feather it, it gets going then bogs and backfires LOUD AS HELL, lol. at least 20-30 times while I'm getting her home about 5 miles away. I switch out the coil, still the same bogging. then I start checking coil wire, alternator wires and a few other connections, Now it's seems ok, Then last night, It acted up again. I'm hearing from some youtubes to run a hot from the steering column to the hot on the pertronix wire?? by doing that, I'm guessing you leave it off the coil if you're doing that type of wiring?
That’s really odd man, I haven’t seen an issue like that before with Pertronix. Try disconnecting your tach wire and see if you still have the same issue. I’ve seen where the tach wire shorts out and causes issues.

Next question.. will this application still work with the 009 distributor with vacuum advance or the 009 distributor with mechanical advance without having to do the modification as in pop riveting the hole in the lower butterfly of the mechanical advance pict34 carburetor and adding a 130 main Jet

What is the gap between the magnet and the sensor
Not sure, it’s preset.
A bit late to the party here lol. So is there no need to re fit the rotar ?
Does that just go in the bag along with the points & condenser?
Still need the cap and rotor. Points and condenser go in a bag. 👍
@@VWJawbreaker thanks for the reply.
I was asking as my doesn't fit when the ring is on. It sits too high.
@@notanotherrick if the center ring isn’t all of the way down then the rotor won’t fit onto the center shaft correctly.
@@VWJawbreaker I'll find my "tapping stick" and try and persuade it to move 👍
@@notanotherrick No, you'll need to rotate it gently around the shaft, and then when it's aligned it will slide down. The inside of the magnetic rotor isn't round; it's shaped like the shaft, so it has four lobes.
Sorry if I missed it. What did you set your timing to? Did you remove the vacuum tube and plug it or leave it on? Thanks as always.
This part number and install video is for a 009 distributor. Pertronix has a different part number for vacuum advance distributors.
To set your timing with a vac advance distributor, you’d want to remove the vacuum hose and plug the hole on the carb.
Do i need to change over to a 12 volt coil or can I use the same coil with resister to 8volts?
For this model you’ll need 12 volts.
I should of done this.. Monday my new distributor came in BUT it wont slide thru my dist clamp.. Its because the bolt is bent in the clamp and can't widen it 😩 sooo.. Perfect excuse to shop for a better nicer clamp lol
VW RICH FLAT4 what’s sad is the module I was using just burnt up on me 😔 but I installed it before I was recording videos. Went back to points for a week, missed the smoothness from the electronic so I went with the CB Performance Magnaspark. Man, seriously money well spent!
@@VWJawbreaker im putting it on the 'future plans' list 👍👍
I'm having trouble with mine it's the vacuum version. The rotory arm won't sit lowto lock in on the shafts. In turn the cap won't fit on because of this 🤦🏼♂️
That’s odd. I’m sure you’ll get it sorted out.
I had to sand a little bit inside the magnet ring so it would sit lower on the shaft. Then the distributor arm would fit correctly. But it supposed to be square inside of the ring to match the distributor shaft.
Do you have to pull the distributor to do the upgrade? I don't know much about reinstalling the distributor.
Brian Hall you don’t have to hit it does make it easier. The distributor can only go back into the drive inside the case one way. See if this video helps you out
ruclips.net/video/ru36EM-fiBU/видео.html
Did you put the rotor back on or not?
Sure did.
@VWJawbreaker Thanks also do I replace the resistor if it had one? Thanks so much your videos help ALOT!
@@danielscrapper8207 the resistor is coil dependent and depending on what Pertronix you’re running, the matching coil shouldn’t need a resistor.
@VWJawbreaker I got the kit today is the magnet supposed to be loose?
@@VWJawbreaker should the magnet be loose on the shaft??
Can i use L300 petrol van distributor
I’m not familiar with those.
a question on another topic My engine from mofoco finally arrived when I was installing the heater boxes one stud was stripped I try to removed and it broke now I have a head with a broken stud and a broken drill bit on it my question is can i change that head only and used one i have from another motor or I have to change both
kg4qpb Laureano you might not need to replace the head. Take the engine to a shop and see if they can weld a nut on it and remove the broken stud.
If not you’ll need to buy a head that is the same specs as what they built the engine with.
@@VWJawbreaker What about if I used the two head that I keep from the old engine or can I move all the valves, sprints, rockers from the mofoco head to the one I have.
kg4qpb Laureano without seeing the engine specs from them, I can’t honestly answer that question.
Points do work fine but it sure seems like you always have to mess with them.. The Pertronix would be more of a set it and forget it. Can you give us a review in a few months to let us know how it's doing?
Rob Stapleton I actually installed that module 2 years ago before I was doing videos. I upgraded to a different style distributor all together so I had it laying on the bench, thus the video 🤪
@@VWJawbreaker Ah so this is the update video 😂.. I guess it holds up pretty good!
Rob Stapleton not really an update, just thinking about some of the tips you gave me.
I've only ever used points.
I've thought about grabbing one of those for the Bella,
I've heard both sides of the argument... I'm still not sure....
VeeDub P8 if you do decide to switch from points, stay away from the empi module.... just my $.02 👍
new plugs/wires new coil new cap and distributor no spark will this replace my ignition igniter only thing i have left ? but cant find the one i need ????
Could be a ground issue or a power to the coil issue. Put a set of points in and see if that works.
Which pertonix are you using?
The 1847a model.
Good video. Set it and forget it!
Vintage Speed VW you got that right!
What about the vacuum advance. Does that get removed?
Ed Weigman no it wouldn’t. Vacuum advance distributor would use a different part number from Pertronix. This video was showing you on a non vacuum advance distributor.
@@VWJawbreaker thanks, i did some more research, i ordered the wrong electronic conversion. I looked in my pile of crap that came with the car and I have 4 old distributors all with the old style vacuum advance. Im going to put point back in it for now until i can get a distributor that will work with my 100 dollar PerTronix unit.
I’d stay with the vacuum advance distributor if you’re already running it. Try to return the Pertronix and get the correct one. Just my opinion.
VWJAWBREAKER I’ll have to call jugs and see if they will exchange. I bought it in a kit.
Awesome video I got this exact kit, guys you have made my day :-)
Thank you for watching and commenting! Glad the video was helpful, that’s what the channel is about.
Thank you I don't know what to do now I'm very depressed all this time waiting for the engine and they send me one that I can't install the Heater Box .
+kg4qpb Laureano I’m sure you’ll figure something out.
Thats awesome man. 🚗💨
JN performance thanks!
How do I test my Petronix Module? I have a multimeter to test it.
Not sure, check their web site. I ran it for a while until I moved to a bigger engine and different ignition setup.
Just ordered mine. Same 009 setup. Thanks for explaining it, I figured it was easy I didn't realize how easy tho.. 1 🌎 1 ❤️🙏🏻
Glad you found the video helpful!
Do you put the condenser screw back?
@@djjonnybong uses a different screw
Yes so the hole is closed up and the screw is easy to locate if needed in the future.
@@VWJawbreaker Quick response :) Thanks, My tac is a after market add on Sunpro. It does have some great power added like you say at the end of your video when it is working right.
William CRAZY LACY Furmage I only have experience with the models for VW’s not other brands.
But disconnect your tach wire that hooks up to the coil and see if that solves the problem.
Just make sure you have a coil with 3ohm resistance or higher
Depends on which model you’re using. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.
That was cool. Thanks.
I appreciate you being here.
No CDI box??
Nope,
Hooks straight to the coil.
@@VWJawbreaker so it's more like an HEI than a CDI?
@@nicktelesco4950 neither really, it’s an electronic points replacement.
Next question.. will this application still work with the 009 distributor with vacuum advance or the 009 distributor with mechanical advance without having to do the modification as in pop riveting the hole in the lower butterfly of the mechanical advance pict34 carburetor and adding a 130 main Jet
@@nicktelesco4950 a “009 with vacuum advance” isn’t a 009…. 009’s are only mechanical advance.
You’d need to get the proper part depending on what distributor you have.
Plugging the hole in the carb or not and different main jet is a totally different thing vs putting a Pertronix in the distributor.
Bro where I can buy it
Ari Ferdiansyah any online VW parr’s place has them and even amazon. Shop around for the module that fits your type of distributor.
Yeap, better starts in the cold, even if your sparkplugs are not in the best of shapes, and it's just install and no need to fiddle with it for years, as opposed to points, one less thing to worry about.
Couldn’t agree more!
Just keep your points and condenser as a spare in your tool kit.
Coil pack and only negative signal and you cancel dispuroter… ..GM COIL PACK 3WIRE
1.GND
2.12VOLT IGN
3.SIG (FROM COND OR ENGINE SPEED SEN)
ALSO CAN USE VW COIL PACK AND OUT PUT 4 WIRE FROM COIL IT SELF
I haven’t used a GM coil in a VW.

Don’t worry about spelling, my language is English and I still misspell hahahaa
Not sure if my distributor would handle what you’re suggesting. I’m running a CB Performance Magnaspark distributor that uses a 1 ohm coil at 30,000 volts.
What about the coil , do you have to use a coil with internal resistor or outside resistor, cause I used a coil with no resistor and burned the module, I got a pertronix. 40,000 v .
How to buy?
Any online parts supplier should sell them. Make sure you get the proper one for the style distributor that you have.
For the 009

Petronix is no durable...🌡Keep Points and Condenser for spare..You going need them one day on road.🚙
Samsung S4 I’ve ran Pertronix for over 3 years before I swapped distributors and engines. I always carried the points and condenser as a backup.
I know several others who have had their Pertronix modules for 5-10 years plus without issue.
That's what I'm hearing
