  • This is a quick unboxing of the The Farmer's Dog cooked dog food. This is a human grade dog food that is cooked and shipped fresh ( frozen ) to you. It is offered on a subscription service and is customized to your dogs weight and breed. In this initial impression and unboxing we talk about what it the initial experience is like unboxing the dog food, what you can expect.
    This is not a full in depth review. We will be covering recipes, cost, taste testing, sourcing and production and much more in our follow up review view as well as comparative review where I will be comparing 10 different cooked dog food companies.

      Keep in mind you do not need to follow their portions. You can adjust. Personally through all the testing I kept my dog on a mix of either 8 or 10oz as opposed to their recommendation. This is of course your call. Alternatively as the farmers dog does not do organ meat you could consider buying the protein yourself cooking in small batches and doing a base mix for much less. You can get base mixes from honest kitchen, sojos, grandma Lucy's, Dr Harvey's and others. This way you maintain a higher quality protein. My recommendation if you go this route is consider a protein outside of chicken while it can be a good rotation option it can also be easy to overfeed and introduce an Omega-3 imbalance.

    Hi. First time pet owner. Just got a cavapoo for my wife and kids on Christmas. The breeder had him on Diamond Naturals kibble but we tried using a brand called Royal Canin and within one day he stopped eating the Diamond Naturals. Then I learned about Fresh Pet Food that is Human Grade. I am new to all this but since you have been doing these reviews can you tell me if one company or food is better than the other? I am looking into The Farmer's Dog, NomNomNow, Pet Plate, and Ollie. Which would you go with? Thanks.

    • @ExperiencesWithMyDog
      @ExperiencesWithMyDog  4 года назад

      an abrupt change in food can be normal especially if not done very slowly. Additionally some kibbles have fats for coating that can be very appetizing for some dogs. This can be challenging for some dogs to change from but it can be done. Fresh cooked options are an option with my current favorites being Evermore Pet Food and Raised Right. That being noted my recommendation would be to consider a raw diet starting your dog on a raw mix is ideal and easiest to work from overtime as opposed to try to introduce later. Some companies to consider are Tucker's Raw, Stella and Chewy Raw, Primal Pet Food Raw, Answers Raw. These are really great options. You may need to slightly appetize your dog with some bone broth or goat's milk but be careful as including it in the food may cause the dog to respond to that as opposed to the food. As such it may be better to use as a treat / reward after they finish their food. If you are OK giving it consistently with the food than you can include it. Other options to consider would be Honest Kitchen clusters, Open Farm ( they have multiple options in regards to types of food all of which I am ok recommending. Kiwi kitchen is also another option. You can also consider lightly cooking your own protein like beef, chicken, pork etc just get it from the supermarket whatever is low cost but ideally organic ( which is better than just about any dog food as not all are organic ) and add to a base like grandma lucys, dr harveys, honest kitchen or sojos. This mixes in and for many dogs they love as it is a fresh cooked protein with a solid base of supplementation. Good luck hopefully in the options recommend you will find something that works for you and your dog! Best wishes to you and yours and a happy and healthy start in 2020 for your pup!

    HI JJ, do you have any follow-up videos on "The Farmers Dog" food? I am thinking about trying them, however this video was made about a year ago and I can't find any additional info from you. Thank you very much!!

    • @ExperiencesWithMyDog
      @ExperiencesWithMyDog  4 года назад +2

      Yes I am currently working on it and it will be out within the next month but I have some other videos coming out in the next few days to a week you may be interested in covering some other companies. The Farmers Dog is a solid option but personally, I do feel there are some better options when considering the cost and evaluating what you pay.
      Here are a few recommendations
      1. Your Pet’s Chef _ will have a basic overview and unboxing coming in a few days. They are new but are a similar option in regards to a cooedk dog food delivered. You do not have a promo for the initial introduction but could get a small order to test it out with your dog. Some of the key benefits in my opinion are
      Similar cost ( using my dog as a reference where the weight would be around 55 to 60 pounds )
      Farmers dogs would be around $250 monthly
      You Pet’s Chef would be just about the same approx. $260
      Key difference include
      Your Pet’s Chef DOES NOT use any synthetic vitamins all nutrients are based solely on ingredients. This is more challenging to achieve and more costly and generally representative of a better nutritional density that a premix vitamin additive. While overall there should not be concerns there have been cases of vitamin premix being incorrectly portioned and causing issues/problems. In this respect, if you can get it naturally it is preferred.
      Your Pet’s chef offers better meat ( animal protein ration ) this is important as it is what you want your dog to eat the most off especially if your dog is overweight or near overweight or does not get that much activity. Furthermore, meat costs more than rice or potatoes
      Farmer's dog has Chickpeas, sweet potato, lentils, parsnip as immediate 2nd or 3rd ingredients
      For Your Chefs Pet, they offer organ meat as generally as the 2nd item ( all their proteins are also USDA certified ).
      I like the ingredients mix more on Your Pet’s Chef ( it offs microalgae a great source for Omega 3,s, and a lot of berries for antioxidants as well as a liquid egg which another great supplement.
      I prefer having fixed quantities of an amount of dog food in your Pet’s chef allowing you to define how much you want to feed your dog as opposed to the pre-defined amount Farmer’s Dog provided. Ultimately nothing wrong it as it can help to reduce overfeeding but if you probably add up how much food you are getting you will get more you can divide out with Your Pet’s chef. Furthermore, you can generally feed less with fresh food ( this is true for both ).
      2. Evermore Pet Food - will have a video as well this week
      They for me are the gold standard and the best option out bar none. The only company that comes close is Raised Right.
      All their proteins are grass-fed or free-range, they user organic produce, no synthetic vitamins, test every batch, and use no synthetic ingredients. Their recipes are amazing in that no other company gives you the amount of protein or premium ingredients.
      No rice, potatoes, corn, lentils, parsnips, etc
      You have three animal proteins ( all single ingredients ) so you have primary meat, heart, and liver. This is amazing for nutrients. The recipes are an outstanding mix and are base the same allowing for rotation if you want to rotate different proteins every few months.
      Cost wise they will be a little more than the Farmers Dog but depends on how much you feed your dog you would probably end up paying around the same to 20 to 35 dollars more but the food quality is not even close and like your chef's pet you get a fixed amount of food ( 1 pack with 1lb/16oz ) so you can feed however much you want. For many dogs 7 to 8 oz once a day is actually enough and in that respect, you could actually have a subscription last your almost a month and it would come out less than Farmer’s Dog or Your Pet’s Chef. If you end up wanting to feed more though it can definitely become more expensive as 2 orders for a month covering 16oz a day would cost around 350 but again it is the best food I have seen and rivals producing it yourself.
      Also, keep in mind no other dog food company users the class of proteins or ingredients they are using.
      3. Another option is a new air-dried option that looks very promising and awesome as you do not need to refrigerate but is in the same class as nutrient density as lightly cooked dog food as it is air-dried ( and is awesome because it can be hydrated with warm water or bone broth ). It much simpler and easier and an all-meat with minimal high call supplemental ingredients. I will be covering them in a later this week also
      Sunday's air-dried food.
      Open Farm gently cooked ( you will have to order from a store though that carries it ).
      Sorry for the length. I hope this helps and good luck and stay tuned for the videos coming up. Have a great day. Stay safe and stay healthy and give your dog a treat from us!

      I also feed my dogs once a day. The amount should be specified by the profile you created, ultimately it is up to you. I feed my dogs a fixed QTY ( approx 8oz ) as such I was able to spread it out further. With that noted the guidance from the Farmer's dog is the amount that is provided in one pouch is what should be feed in that day.

    Is it grain free? My vet told me it’s bad for dogs hearts

    • @ExperiencesWithMyDog
      @ExperiencesWithMyDog  3 года назад

      It is but overall studies look to indicate that the concern comes from lack of high quality animal proteins which can provide superior bioavailability ( digestion and acceptance ) of important vitamins, minerals and nutrients. In this respect you want to see if there is a over abundance of "protein boosters" which are not animal based. With this noted the Farmers Dog does have a a high quality primary animal protein source and is supplemented with an organ meat which is important for taurine which is somethin lacking in many "grain free" recipes. There is is also additional synthetic vitamins and minerals. While not my first pick it is a solid option and vastly better than many low quality grain free options.

    What kind of person will spend 600$ per month to feed their dog ?

    • @ExperiencesWithMyDog
      @ExperiencesWithMyDog  3 года назад

      You do not need to follow their QTY guideline. I have found my dogs do great on a 6.5 to 8oz ( once a meal serving ) this is considerably less than recommended portion sizing. As always though you want to consider your dogs breed, weight and activity level. It is still going to be more expensive than kibble and for those open to it pre packaged RAW is a much higher value and nutrient dense. Even for heavy dogs you can generally have a months worth of food for around 100 to 150 dollars maybe 200 if you feed more.

      @ExperiencesWithMyDog  4 года назад

      Based on views and the length they have been around I would say Farmer's Dog look to currently be very popular and the leading option for cooked dog food. I do feel there are better options and would personally prefer raw feeding which I feel is superior and much lower in cost ( for one of my dogs in one month it is around $100 which is considerably less ). As always though to each his own and for smaller dogs the cost is much more reasonable and it is unquestionably a better option than kibble. In the end my goal is to just provide more information. It has taken longer than originally planned but I am looking forward to finally releasing the in depth reviews on this cooked dog foods.
