- Hello everyone! My brain is totally fried as i'm writing this.... ive been dealing with some major art block and i've been so worn out. I wanted to do something pretty chill this week and decided to update you on some art supplies that I used to love but due to various things happening (quality goes down, company raises prices, new cheaper versions come out..etc..) I don't really reach for these anymore.

I prefer painting on wood (never tried masonite excuse me you have not converted me yet because you didnt tell meeeee) and art boards, OR a small canvas if possible. YOU'VE NEVER EMBARRASSED YOURSELF!! I actually hated kneadable erasers at first too hahah PROUD OF YOU 💜

You and Rae both have got me drawing again. My people still look terrible, but my blending is much better. When I saw Rae's video where she was testing liquids that help blend colored pencils, I took the one that worked and filled a water brush with alcohol. It works wonders with blending and gives me more control over the blending.

I saw a video that said if you sharpen your pencil and lead keeps coming out it is because the lead is broken up inside the pencil. A few seconds in microwave will melt the lead and it will reharden ubroken.

Spring Red2000 ... watercolor paper. Watercolor is not meant to put on a canvas, it’s for paper.
I’ve always enjoyed canvas, though erasing is soooo difficult. You can’t erase mechanical pencil too well on the center of the canvas

Canvas is best used for painters. You know, acrylic, oil. Drawing on it is hard on your supplies. Stretched canvas is awesome for palette knife painting.
Masonite isn't great for oil, but stretched canvas is perfect.
I've never used masonite so I might have to check that out. I have used pretty much every paper made including paper made from minerals, as well as canvas board, stretched canvas, and wood canvas!

If normal canvases are to bouncy for you, you could use flat canvases. They don’t bounce, they are super cheap (less than $1 a piece on amazon) and work really well in picture frames.

Charcoal is my worst enemy. maybe I just don't have the right paper for it or something but it is my nightmare! I wish I could use it like you do
What type of charcoal are you using? If you can get your hands on some willow charcoal that stuff is great. Paper wise, it's really good to practice on butchers paper, then go up to something with a bit more tooth to it (like pastel paper). But with all things in art experiment and find what works for you.
Tips that may help:
-charcoal is extremely soft, meaning it is dark and smudges easily. Keep your hand off the canvas
-kneaded rubber erasers are your best friend with charcoal
-USE A CLEAR COAT. Prevents ruining the piece when it is finished (also recommended for any type of pastel or soft graphite)
-remember that soft leads can be harder to shade with if pressing hard, so be gentle with it
But yes I agree that charcoal is awful.
edgy and hot charcoal can be preserved with a clear coat, like Fixativ spray.
imapancake I also used to hate charcoal but now I love it cz I draw a lot of portraits and charcoal really is easy to work with for portraits

I actually bought the prismacolor verithin pencils because of this video. They're great for just sketching in a sketchbook and playing around with. Love them for those reasons.

Watching you has made me a better artist. I have learned so much from even just the smallest things, I have some crappy art stuff but I made it work from YOUR videos! It’s all because I started watching you and now I can draw from a simple eye to a complex wolf
I used to hate water colors of all types until I actually looked into it and found you could also mix them with gouache to make it have a different effect. Now they are definitely a favorite of mine.

When I first started getting serious about my art I was looking at canvas and could just see myself completely ruining it so I found canvas board it's the same texture and you can literally fit the finished product in a normal frame. I would highly recommend

The first time I used prisms colors, I broke the lead like 5,000 times and at the end, the pencil was like half the size it used to be...sOoO I just stick to crayola 🙃🙂

Kneaded erasers are fire for me! I've used them since forever and they're so versatile in charcoal and graphite work. Bonus: They're great stress relievers when you stretch and pull them after a long day at work.

One of the brush pens came with my first good set of arteza watercolors. I loved it immediately.
masonite (also known as hardboard) is great to work with and super cheap, but it's worth noting that larger pieces can warp over time if it's not framed.

We used to wet, stretch, and prime our canvases ourselves and not only was it really satisfying it was so much better than the canvases you could get at the store. Good times.
