Me to I love the blue aesthetic it’s so nice!
There is a brand in Brazil that sells "tempera gouache", which is THE paint that everyone uses in school, cause it's super cheap and non-toxic, and can be washed off of clothes (to an extent, at least), so it's ok if the kids mess around with it. The problem is that my teachers and everyone else at school always called it simply "gouache". So for my entire life until very recently, I thought those were gouache paints and when I saw people working with gouache and saw their amazing results I was like "what kind of wizardry is that??" So yeah. Guess I'm not a fan of tempera paints either. I just didn't know it until this very year lol
Same. Until I went to art school I didn't believe Disney painted their acrylic cells with gouache because tempera could never do that! Then I started to hear gouache is super expensive and got even more confused. Once I learned tempera is gouche for little kids and very different from actual gouache, everything clicked.
buddy it's a paint for kids don't expect it to be like other expensive gouache
You said 'no glitter' and my heart climbed out of my chest, covered itself in glitter, broke itself in half, and jumped off my roof. So glad for enviro-friendly glitters. I live for sparkles 💖💖💖

The 2 queens 👑
Hello Chloe
I love both of your art you have some of The best colouring ive ever seen
Ikr
Ahhhhh hi Chloe!!!!
I love you to the moon and back Rae, but this is misinformation about Cadmium. Also it's cadMium, not cadium. According to numerous (reliable) sources the level of soluable cadmium in the pigments used in art supplies is not enough to be remotely toxic. I stress the word Art Supplies there because the levels of cadmium used in other products can be toxic. Tests by the European Union on art supplies and the testing done by art supply manufacturers such as Winsor and Newton concluded that the levels of cadmium contained in the products is not enough to cause any harm even if ingested or used for long periods of time. The cadmium pigment in most art supplies like paints isn't even soluble through your skin. Breathing in or using the paints (again, I stress art supplies here) is not toxic at all, even with everyday use. If the levels of cadmium were at all high enough to put users at risk, a CL label (caution label) is mandated to be applied or included on all packaging. If the product you are using has a label on the packaging that says AP certified or CP, it has been thoroughly tested and approved to be completely safe and non toxic. Hope this clears up the confusion. There is also much more information on this on the Winsor and Newton website as well as Green America site.
TLDR: Cadmium is toxic, BUT the cadmium in art supplies that have the proper CL, or AP certified labels are completely harmless and safe. Also the tests have been done by independent labs and not just the art supply manufacturers themselves for quality control. There are many unions around the world that regulate art supplies and test for hard metals and toxic chemicals and the best way to know if what you have is safe is by looking for the AP or CL labels on your supplies. Happy painting and creating! :)
EDIT: Not trying to be a know-it-all. I just wanted to save others who see this from a mass trash of their art supplies which we know are damn expensive. And most of us artists, well... we poor! :)
Thank you
I have a question about labels then? not technically cadmium, but I have some watercolor paints (Prismacolor Premier Tubed Watercolors) that have a warning on them? They say they have cancer-causing agents in them (specifically one of my greens and my cerulean blue), but does that mean they are not safe to use? I just want to be safe with my artwork and stuff. I tried to google but i wasnt understanding much of it
lilmsdrummer this needs to be higher up omggg
I came looking for this comment.
@@graceyates1836 They are legally mandated to state whether the pigments used in the paints are potentially toxic, such as your cerulean blue as it would most likely contain cobalt. Some of my paints also say this and they have these pigments in them. As long as you work in a ventilated space and don't ingest anything you should be fine as the quantities are low in the paints. Especially with watercolors as you don't use any solvents to thin the paints such as with oil painting, which could release more harmful fumes than mixing acrylics or watercolors with water.
Pro tip-
Use a bowl for your paint water.
-You won't mistake it for your tea
-It is harder tip over
-If a brush is soaking in it then it won't mush up the bristles as much
- It is a good use for bowls that are too nice to eat out of
- You usually don't need to refresh the water as much
- It fits larger tools such as sponges, cotton gauze and painters brushes
- If you use pyrex, clay, or stoneware then it will be less likely to shatter all over the floor when you drop it
When I see a drinking glass or a sauce jar full of paint water I think that it is silly and kinda unprofessional (not meant in the shade way). The water bowl is part of your necessary work space so you should have a dedicated tool for the job. It would be like using a dinner plate or a plastic fruit punnet for your palette. Dedicate something for the process if you are a painter. At the very least have a plate for painting that isn't the same as your dinner plates.
Ahh, you would be disgruntled by my method
If I'm painting, 99% of the time it's a minifigure, so I just use a shotglass. I also use salad plates and small bowls as palettes sometimes due to how easily they clean. Mind, I'm also the sort that uses construction grade magnetic trays to hold sewing pins, fish keeping supplies to grow plants, and I'm also using some dishware and dinosaurs to decorate fish tanks as well. Art and office supplies were clearly always intended for use in sewing, and some ordinary home gardening tools work fabulous in a commercial construction setting. If you aren't blending your realms of knowledge and supplies, what ARE you doing?
No hate though, I simply cannot and will not separate these things more sharply. Doing so would restrict the creative possibilities, in both what can be done and how to do it. My creative process was and is never meant for someone else, so 'professionalism' only applies if it would have a physical effect (i.e. quality of outcome). Given that rarely such applies, let Chaos reign undivided.
Those are good tips. I have to admit there have been times I’ve accidentally dipped my paintbrush in my coffee mug by mistake while painting. 🎨☕️🚫🫤

If you don't use too much inks, paints nor markers, it can work perfectly fine. It's what I use for sketches. I also do free drawing with it and markers (cardboard protecting next page). The other side gets useless but it's fine.
@@cferracini I like to draw on printer paper so that I can then cut out my drawing & glue it onto my sketchbook.

Don't feel bad, I started with tractor feed printer paper (for dot matrix printers) and delighted in playing with the tear-off edges with all the holes - I would fold them into accordians, LOL. Back then ANY paper was valuable.
Leave it to Rae to whip out a butt donut. LOL. Girl your skin is glowing and this camera quality is amazing. Also I agree with the tempera paint. For sure.
@Midoriya Izuku *tempera *forced . There you go ! Belated Merry Christmas!
If you want to paint in tempera you must study the history....ive been working with egg-tempera and yes, as Rae says, u cant tell the the end result but you must understand how to use it. There are schools all over the world that teach it, I am a teacher of it. thanks for your time guys!!!
----------
I CANNOT STAND tempera paint. Elementary and middle schools in my area only use that and low quality watercolor, so it took a while for me to realize that I wasn’t the one messing up all of my art and it was the quality of the paint I was using . . . After I got some acrylic paint, my life c h a n g e d.
I had done 2 layers with white tempera paint mixed in and it cracked my whole painting
The super cheap 'sketchbooks' are awesome for practicing gesture drawing with an ebony or charcoal pencil, because it's cheap and you can practice a lot without worrying about ruining the notebook :0
"Us artists are always accidentally drinking paint water..."
I must be in the minority, because I'm positive I've never done that.
yea me too 😂
Yes
Yes same
I think it's not necessarily drinking it but like getting it in your mouth, which does happen quite frequently with me and all most all my other artist friends who deal with any kind of paint that requires water (to either clean or need it like water color/gouche etc) but yeah i guess all artists have very different experiences
Lucky...
The number of times i thought i had my drink in my hands but no it wasnt.... '-'
I'll take pencil erasers that "don't work" over the pencil erasers that *actively stain the paper with their colour* any day.

Tempra paint in my mind is for preschoolers. As a preschool teacher we use it like everyday and it’s perfect for them. Other than that i can’t imagine anyone using it for serious adult art.

I'm in specialized artist school... And temperas drive me crazy, I like acrylics more. But they still want me to buy them.
@@kristianapacheva yassss, I love acrylics too! Oils drive me crazy with that crazy turpentine smell, also they're hella expensive.
I had to look up tempera paint to find out more about it. Apparently, the stuff called "tempera" in the U.S. is *not* the same stuff used back in the early Fine Art period (pre-1500s) called "egg tempera" which was made from, among other things, egg yolk as a binding agent. It was remarkably resilient over time as evidenced by the amount of surviving artwork from the period which still exists today. Modern tempera paint is more correctly called "poster paint"; and in my opinion, the word "tempera" was borrowed in the U.S. from the classical stuff because of the resemblance to the word "temporary", which implies it is for exactly that: temporary artwork done on windows and other washable mediums, such as on windows of businesses like stores and restaurants, or on car windows, et cetera. I remember working with tempera poster paint back in grade school, and you're right; it is very difficult to get it to look good without streaking or laying it on super-thick to the point where it becomes opaque rather than translucent. It's good for making simple, temporary illustrations and lettering on glass or plastic, but that's about it.
Yeah like that’s the same stuff that like the Mona Lisa was painted with
You do still get tempera but the likes of sennelier egg tempera has oil added as well. I guess they have to add extra things in it to make it last in a tube.
When I have used it in the past I just made tiny amounts that I could use in hours or a day at most and just used yolk and water but I believe you can use a tiny amount of vinegar or use wine to slow it spoiling if you don’t have distilled water or want to keep your paint for a few days in the fridge.
Some people also use alcohol or the like as a wetting agent but since I mainly just used earth pigments I didn’t need this.
I think the tempera that she was talking about is usually called poster paint here.

Even Polychromos has Cadmium colours, don't know if the pigments are Cadmium or not though. Cadmium isn't the only pigment that's poison, there's loads of them, there's a website which explains them as well.
Can I know the website please?
Yeah
Polychromos don’t have actual Cadmium in them, they are a Cadmium hue.
Most of the ‘poisonous’ paints aren’t that poisonous if you practice good hygiene (wash your hands after use and don’t put them in your mouth) and paint in a well ventilated space. But like Rae, I don’t take the chance when there are safer options that are just as good lol.
@@pauliedoodle1939 Good to know they are hue's.
Like arsenic and radium (yes, once used in paint)
Regarding the cadmium, forget about the artist and what they "consume" and imagine the poor folk who work with recovering and production of the pigment..
I actually love those cute decorative erasers --- as decoration. They actually make really good, inexpensive props for doll collecting. Never thought of how annoying they'd probably be to filter out if you're actually looking for good erasers, because I'd imagine they're pretty useless in that department. :P

"See, you cant tell the difference between the real cadmium and the fake!"
*could tell instantly which one was the fake and which one was real* is it enough of a difference to warrant using the cadmium one? No. But can I tell? Yes
Until you mix it with white and cad red gives coral while fake cad gives pink. Cad red is true neutral red without warm or cool undertone and this property is why it’s so valued. It can’t be mixed with multiple pigments at such high chroma as the real deal. And fake cad is just a mix of red pigments which can be problematic with colour mixes.
@@knp01 fun fact: the real primary colors are cyan, magenta, and another color I forgot.
I can see the difference easily. I would consider using cadmium free paints if they were considerably less expensive, which would give me a reason to use them but, they cost the same. I wear latex free gloves when I paint and don’t eat or drink while doing any artwork...that’s for breaks. I have been using cadmium paints since 1972 and I am still alive. The color of cadmium paints is much better to my eye. Just use good safety sense when using them.
Just wanted to chime in as yet another person that totally can see the difference.

@Katie S
I was going to point out the exact same thing, it’s really important and as a family we never buy it.
@Freya Wilson | That makes very happy to hear (read?)! Lol
@Katie S
It’s the simple things in life really, you made my smile too. 🙃
Who guess the right fake and real paint before she said.?! I like the real one sis, definitely a Difference
Sammie VP i saw a good bit of difference. Real cadmium red looked more rich.
it does but they're so similar I think it's worth it
I definitely could tell a difference too! I get why you'd want to use the synthetic but under filming lights you could tell.
Well the fake one is like it has more orange to it
Carrie Mansfield it’s probably only noticeable in extreme lighting. I’d go got fake things myself 😂.
Dang right about the cadmiums. That stuff will absorb through your skin. I wish I'd known that in my 20's when I was often covered from fingertips to half way to my elbow in cadmium orange, red, and yellow oil pastels for weeks at a time while working on projects. . . had a lot of lung and kidney problems then. Ugh. I shudder.
Such a fun and informative young lady. Thank you for your videos 🙂
5:04 i got vietnam flashbacks from primary school
We used tempera all the time and i still have leftovers
Recently i decided to be extra and use the leftovers to paint my sketchbook like all the tiktok folks and tbh after becoming more experienced with art its not as bad as i can remember?? It reminds me a lot on acrylics

Omg I havent watched ur vids in 10 months its changed so much but the quality is so good too!
9:43 the reason why they cost more is because of the brush tip, vs the bullet nib :)
Rae: I’m going to be revamping my studio.
Me: *gets flashback of chloe’s video*
"So many people out there like the crazy art"
Honey, no one likes Crazy Art.
N O O N E
lmao
In elementary I avoided those markers like the PLAGUE.
I had them but after I used them once as a kid I was like "never again-"
By the time I was 8 I refused to use Crazy Art or Rose Art, Crayola all the way people. And of course other brands once you begin to move on to higher quality stuff.
Your background is amazing!!
Rae: A majority says they hate the decorative erasers.
Me, who collects them: I WILL TAKE THEM OFF YOU HANDS FOR FREE
FINALLY ANOTHER COLLECTOR 😭
Same
"Every person who is watching this has probably used them"
Me: never heard of it.

@@sensacetionalshady same
My friend bought me the blending markers as a b-day gift, even though i already had markers. I havent used them much but all i can say is the brush tip is *chefs kiss* L O V E L Y
That was interesting about the glitter, I didn’t know that. I will for sure only purchase the eco friendly glitter from now on!
Wanting a ‘my favourite art supplies’ video now 😩
