There is a brand in Brazil that sells "tempera gouache", which is THE paint that everyone uses in school, cause it's super cheap and non-toxic, and can be washed off of clothes (to an extent, at least), so it's ok if the kids mess around with it. The problem is that my teachers and everyone else at school always called it simply "gouache". So for my entire life until very recently, I thought those were gouache paints and when I saw people working with gouache and saw their amazing results I was like "what kind of wizardry is that??" So yeah. Guess I'm not a fan of tempera paints either. I just didn't know it until this very year lol
Same. Until I went to art school I didn't believe Disney painted their acrylic cells with gouache because tempera could never do that! Then I started to hear gouache is super expensive and got even more confused. Once I learned tempera is gouche for little kids and very different from actual gouache, everything clicked.

I love you to the moon and back Rae, but this is misinformation about Cadmium. Also it's cadMium, not cadium. According to numerous (reliable) sources the level of soluable cadmium in the pigments used in art supplies is not enough to be remotely toxic. I stress the word Art Supplies there because the levels of cadmium used in other products can be toxic. Tests by the European Union on art supplies and the testing done by art supply manufacturers such as Winsor and Newton concluded that the levels of cadmium contained in the products is not enough to cause any harm even if ingested or used for long periods of time. The cadmium pigment in most art supplies like paints isn't even soluble through your skin. Breathing in or using the paints (again, I stress art supplies here) is not toxic at all, even with everyday use. If the levels of cadmium were at all high enough to put users at risk, a CL label (caution label) is mandated to be applied or included on all packaging. If the product you are using has a label on the packaging that says AP certified or CP, it has been thoroughly tested and approved to be completely safe and non toxic. Hope this clears up the confusion. There is also much more information on this on the Winsor and Newton website as well as Green America site. TLDR: Cadmium is toxic, BUT the cadmium in art supplies that have the proper CL, or AP certified labels are completely harmless and safe. Also the tests have been done by independent labs and not just the art supply manufacturers themselves for quality control. There are many unions around the world that regulate art supplies and test for hard metals and toxic chemicals and the best way to know if what you have is safe is by looking for the AP or CL labels on your supplies. *THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU* for bringing up the dangers of plastic glitter. There are SOOOO many microplastics in our oceans and that gets in the food chain and there have even been reports of it being in rain water. GAH! Eco glitters are so muuuuch better ♥♥♥
I had to look up tempera paint to find out more about it. Apparently, the stuff called "tempera" in the U.S. is *not* the same stuff used back in the early Fine Art period (pre-1500s) called "egg tempera" which was made from, among other things, egg yolk as a binding agent. It was remarkably resilient over time as evidenced by the amount of surviving artwork from the period which still exists today. Modern tempera paint is more correctly called "poster paint"; and in my opinion, the word "tempera" was borrowed in the U.S. from the classical stuff because of the resemblance to the word "temporary", which implies it is for exactly that: temporary artwork done on windows and other washable mediums, such as on windows of businesses like stores and restaurants, or on car windows, et cetera. I remember working with tempera poster paint back in grade school, and you're right; it is very difficult to get it to look good without streaking or laying it on super-thick to the point where it becomes opaque rather than translucent. It's good for making simple, temporary illustrations and lettering on glass or plastic, but that's about it.
You do still get tempera but the likes of sennelier egg tempera has oil added as well. I guess they have to add extra things in it to make it last in a tube. When I have used it in the past I just made tiny amounts that I could use in hours or a day at most and just used yolk and water but I believe you can use a tiny amount of vinegar or use wine to slow it spoiling if you don’t have distilled water or want to keep your paint for a few days in the fridge. Some people also use alcohol or the like as a wetting agent but since I mainly just used earth pigments I didn’t need this. I think the tempera that she was talking about is usually called poster paint here.
My mom bought me those $5 sketchbook everytime I asked for a sketchbook. The fact was it can’t handle more then a few scribbles, and that’s not good for heavy handed people (like me)
i found a paper pad once, for kids, and the thin paper was perfect for my pencil work (one mech pencil only).. the paper was so smooth so the smudging looked really clean lol.. people kept asking what paper i prefered and i was just like "mm... that cheap paper for $2 at the cheap discount store lol"

Thank you so much, Rae! I've been obsessed with glitter since I remember and I felt really guilty every time I would use it. I'm so glad that these products are coming out now so hopefully, it'll help our environment.
I think it's not necessarily drinking it but like getting it in your mouth, which does happen quite frequently with me and all most all my other artist friends who deal with any kind of paint that requires water (to either clean or need it like water color/gouche etc) but yeah i guess all artists have very different experiences
Rae:“I won’t use glitter” Me: cause it’s craft herpes? Rae: “it’s plastic and needs to stay out of the water “ Me: totally! We need to save the environment, and also... craft herpes
"See, you cant tell the difference between the real cadmium and the fake!" *could tell instantly which one was the fake and which one was real* is it enough of a difference to warrant using the cadmium one? No. But can I tell? Yes
Until you mix it with white and cad red gives coral while fake cad gives pink. Cad red is true neutral red without warm or cool undertone and this property is why it’s so valued. It can’t be mixed with multiple pigments at such high chroma as the real deal. And fake cad is just a mix of red pigments which can be problematic with colour mixes.
I can see the difference easily. I would consider using cadmium free paints if they were considerably less expensive, which would give me a reason to use them but, they cost the same. I wear latex free gloves when I paint and don’t eat or drink while doing any artwork...that’s for breaks. I have been using cadmium paints since 1972 and I am still alive. The color of cadmium paints is much better to my eye. Just use good safety sense when using them.
I'm glad I'm not the only one with the glitter. It just never gets off of my hands and I have to be careful not to touch my eyes. At least we know now about how it affects the environment, and the plant based glitter sounds cool. 😅
I mean if you're providing them to kids who are just there for funsies and don't particularly care about the outcome of their work, who cares But if you, an artist, are trying to make something good that will last, at least get cheap acrylics lol
Plot twist: she’s hoarding cadmium paint and discouraging everyone from using it so it goes extinct and she can one day make a video about the ancient cadmium pigment once used :)
Cadmium was also found in jewelry at Claire's. Here in Canada we have a show called Marketplace that goes undercover about suspicious business proposals/tactics/corporations. And they discovered that there's cadmium in Claire's jewelry. You can probably find it here on RUclips if you search for it, there's quite a few Marketplace episodes posted on here

Since then, I’ve binged so many of your videos and you’ve inspired me to switch up the media I usually do when doing art! Not just that, you’ve inspired me in more ways than one. So I usually draw with pencil and add value, but for some reason, watching your videos made me want to use colored pencils more and get better at shading with them. I’ll get off my phone now since I’m not supposed to use my phone with a concussion!

Rae I would really like an Koi Sakura watercolor review, I know I can trust you since I've been watching you for 1-2 years now. It's just a recommendation, you choose if you want to do it or not
It depends on the sketchbook! If you want good quality, get Canson or Strathmore. They come in different sizes, thickness, and smoothness. Tempera, and Cra-Z-Art are pretty much givens.
I want that $5 sketchbook!! I’d take the pages out and use it as a hard cover / folder to keep my main sketch book safe while traveling (once THE BEER is only in the history books, of corse!!)
At 11:58 you see like the two swatches, in my opinion the fake looks a little brighter you'd see it if you squint your eyes and the real one looks a little darker. Btw that quality from the camera was : 👌

@@lscs102 if we use paints with heavy metals, (cadmium, cobalt, etc.) they get into the environment when we rinse our brushes and throw our paint water down the drain. The metals can then cause damage to plants and other animals. And yes, some people drink their paint water by mistake. Non-toxic alternatives are available these days and some paint companies (Windsor & Newton are one that comes to mind) sell non-toxic alternatives, e.g. their cadmium-free range.
By the time I was 8 I refused to use Crazy Art or Rose Art, Crayola all the way people. And of course other brands once you begin to move on to higher quality stuff.
I'm so glad you mentioned, "accidentally drinking paint water". After doing this twice in one day, I switched to deep bowls for my paint water to make myself stop drinking paint cocktails. I'm glad I'm not the only one!! 😅🤣😅
Glitter is evil in more ways then one. I'm happy they have eco glitter. I do hope they banned regular glitter . Also I'm on the same boat with Tempera paint. Tempera use to be really good back in the day because it was made out of different ingredients . The Tempera paint we have today is garbage.
The synthetic Cadmium paint is significantly less lightfast than the synthetic colorant. It will almost definitely fade faster than the real cadmium paint.
Any fading of replacement "cadmium colors" (which I personally have not even heard of fading) would be totally due to what pigments are used. All non cadmium "cadmuim replacements" made to be artist grade by reputable makers know what pigments to use to make it non fading. It is not a problem.
Those dollar sketch books would be good for daily 30second pose drawing, i use them because they’re cheap and once you’re done you can recycle them for fireplaces or whatever without feeling like you’re wasting good paper

Yeah like that’s the same stuff that like the Mona Lisa was painted with
You do still get tempera but the likes of sennelier egg tempera has oil added as well.

"See, you cant tell the difference between the real cadmium and the fake!"
*could tell instantly which one was the fake and which one was real* is it enough of a difference to warrant using the cadmium one?
@@knp01 fun fact: the real primary colors are cyan, magenta, and another color I forgot.
Just wanted to chime in as yet another person that totally can see the difference.
