That’s the immediate difference, with crayola you need a cup of water for it to look pigmented but for Winsor and newton you only need a drop or two to activate its buttery richness 🤗
By the looks of it, you dilated the expensive ones waaaaaaay to much, the purpose is to wet the brush a little, go over the droplet of paint a few times and then you paint. Also when you let them dry in half pans, you can use them any time you want.😊
Well dear, if you had dipped into the pigment and then onto the page instead of into the water you would have had a greater pigment load on the page. ( no disrespect or snarkiness intended. ) My favorite watercolors are Daniel Smith with Windsor Newton a close second.
Aislinn Graves same here. I haven't even really used those types of water colors and I know better. It confuses me how she didn't think of it in the first place.
she diluted the more expensive water colours down too much, thats why it was more translucent than opaque. i have the same water colours as her and mine work fine
Coming from someone that uses Windsor and Newton, you can get a palette online for cheaper and they actually last for a long time. You won’t want to add too much water to them if you want a better pigment. I’ve never had problems with this brand but you have to learn how to use them right. To be fair you’ve never used them but this is just my advice. I use mine by first spraying the palette with water then dipping a watercolor brush in water. Next I dip my paint brush into the paint gently and then if I want a lighter pigment I quickly dip it in water. Your supposed to keep adding layers if you want it to turn out nicely (I rarely do and it’s still fine though) I just dip without it. Also remember to keep two glasses of water, one for cleaning, one for dipping. And never, ever use paper that isn’t made for watercolor or it could shrivel up or not mix as nicely.
No hate this is just constructive criticism. The more expensive water color would’ve been more pigmented if you didn’t dilute it that much. I my opinion, you diluted it A LOT, way too much.

Winsor and Newton was actually one of the best watercolor pigments in a tube form. You just need to know on how to use the medium well. This should be a win win situation for both since crayola is also a wonderful medium for beginners. Fun fact: yes, you need to soak your watercolors before using. BUT! instead of drowning the pigments, just spritz. And also, you need to put your water color pigment in a tube form on your palette un drown. I mean, TAKE THAT WATER AWAY FROM YOUR PIGMENT. You need to dilute it with the brush 😅
Hey girl~~ Maybe try to take more control of the water when painting (not soaking the watercolors), and of course being aware of the drying time is important too! I look foward to see another watercolor video ^^
I currently paint with winsor & newton professional watercolors when I originally started off with Prang watercolors, which are at a similar price point of crayola and a little better quality. Im never going back. Also you kind of swatched it wrong. It was diluted a little too much! Besides all that I love these kinds of videos.
Some supplies aren't worth the money but most of the expensive supplies are actually REALLY better than cheap supplies. This test made me cringe sorry ... i'm a huge fan of watercolors and the W&N are really pigmented. They are not overpriced, they are made with really high quality pigments. I think the most expensive, the ones I believe are the "best" or the "best" are the Daniel smith's watercolors and the Dr Ph Martin's watercolors. The crayola are really light weight, full of water and not much pigment, they are also chalkier. The W&N are really thick concentrated watercolors, they are a lot more long lasting, I have some of my W&N paint and have been using the same for years ^^
Sakuems i agree, when it comes to the art world it's not the same as clothing or other stuff. When you get gucci shirt for 500 dollars that has quality of 50 dollar shirt MAX that's an "Overpriced item". But art supplies just don't work like that there is not really such thing as Luxury supply's. There is so much that goes into it like Pigments that are super expensive, quality paint should be more resistant to light, it should mix better and much more, and if you need that quality for your work nobody is going to just give it to you for 2 bucks or smth so paying 15 dollars for small tube isn't as crazy as some people think it is..(I'm sorry i needed to rent)
I actually prefer Sennelier to W&N, but totally agree... like these are artist grade watercolors, they're not even in the same class. Crayolas are literally meant for children. $60 for watercolor isn't even that much... not to mention, you could get something like Blick or W&N's student grade that would still be better.
Sakuems I saw your channel on another art video I was watch in in shading so I checked out your channel and it was amazing hope u continue your art style. It's amazing😍I'm a subscriber BTW love ur content
Why didnt she buy a set of tubes instead? I think its 12 tubes (winsor and newton) for ~$40, after 40% coupon would be like $25 Theres also a 6 tube set that was $30 i think Individual tubes are always more expensive

Rae i love your video but I think you might have used too much water to water it down lol and I think there are some watercolor sets from crayola that are not washablebe watercolor paint they are the educational watercolor paints for students they also have a set from Prang also
dude the prang sets from around the 80s-early 90s before they were bought out are so nice. They've changed a lot. If I were to reccomend a student grade set now, it'd be the kuretake pallet or WN cotman watercolor.
grace right? It was so ridiculous, after she diluted it and then diluted it more she’s like “omg these were so expensive and I was expecting them to be more pigmented.” Yeah, maybe they would’ve been if you used less water.. I couldn’t even finish the video after that nonsense.
I'm no expert but I don't think your supposed to pour the water on it I think ur supposed to dip your brush in water swirl it around in the paint then use it...
Well, the artists can take the tube paints and make them solid by pouring them into half pans and letting them dry and then treating them as solid watercolors. That works really well. Also, you can get the winsor and newton cotman solid water colors on amazon for a really good price, like less than twenty dollars if your careful.
OOOO girl! you put too much water, that's why everything seem diluted and less pigment.... you like pour the whole cup of water over the paint, which is a no nooooooooo if you want the full maximum of the pigment
@@iehwjwbhwyshe4140 But the way that you use watercolors, is the more water you add, the more translucent the pigment should be. That's under the artist's control, not the company's.

at first i thought the succulents didn't look good cuz the paints were bad. but then she used the expensive paints and i'm like girllll you need to improve your technique first. i don't see too much visual difference between any of them tbh haha
A concern about that is 1) either the cheap fine liners arent waterproof, or 2) the cheapness shows with time. Sure they could be amazing, maybe the same quality as the expensive ones, but they won't last anywhere near as long. So in a comparison video where they'll be used once to show which is better/ more worth it, it won't show the actual full potential comparison.
The reason why the expensive one wasn't that pigmented because you dipped the paint brush in water after it touched the paint... I was soooo pissed when she added to much water! It's not the paint fault.. It's yours😕😕😕😕

@@erickdraws9563 It's not clear it's not meant to be serious. This looks like a review/comparison, lots of people could be mislead by this, especially younger viewers, which is a shame. Art supplies are expensive and that sucks and I hate it too, but there are certain price points that are fair. The price of these paints is fair when taking into consideration labor and sourcing costs.
The expensive one is KNOWN for being transparent so you can do very light colours and blend nicely with soft colours. Also, when you take out the tube, I find that the best results happen, when you leave then to dry before using them.
For watercolour I would recommend the windsor and newton cotman line. They're student grade and REALLY good. The ones Rae had were the professional ones, which are about 3 times the price of cotman, but obviously more suited to.. well professionals. I have one of the cotman solid pan sets and they're so so good 😍.
This comparison is so not fair, I was really exited to see the topic of this video but that’s nothing what I expected ! I’ve been using Windsor newton and Schmincke for a long time, and I have to say they have very good qualities and the colours are super vivid and pigmented
One question and one suggestion for a follow up. Question: What kind of paper were you using? Good watercolour paper (100% cotton) makes a big big difference to watercolour painting. Follow up suggestion - regarding the colour permanence. I suggest you cover half of each of your paintings and leave them in bright sunlight for a week or three then see what the fading of each one is.

TheLittleMinion, math can show you how much you pay for what sort of quality )
Winsor and Newton was actually one of the best watercolor pigments in a tube form. You just need to know on how to use the medium well. This should be a win win situation for both since crayola is also a wonderful medium for beginners.
Fun fact: yes, you need to soak your watercolors before using. BUT! instead of drowning the pigments, just spritz. And also, you need to put your water color pigment in a tube form on your palette un drown. I mean, TAKE THAT WATER AWAY FROM YOUR PIGMENT. You need to dilute it with the brush 😅

Maybe try to take more control of the water when painting (not soaking the watercolors), and of course being aware of the drying time is important too!

It's to get different shades of the color. light colors first then apply darker shades.
Tyler Slaughter she should have used a pallet
You can actually pour the water on it. I've done it with my watercolours too and it makes them a lot more pigmented.

@@artsy_marcypan adding more water makes it less pigmented... tf are you talking about
Well, the artists can take the tube paints and make them solid by pouring them into half pans and letting them dry and then treating them as solid watercolors. That works really well. How about testing fine-liners? I've seen a lot of expensive-expensive comparisons but nor cheap-expensive
Yeah, ew! This didn't happen here either because this was more fun and jokes than an actual comparison.
