I always wondered how individual corps members learn their movements. Very interesting! It must have been a more laborious process before computer programs got involved.
When I was in High School, section leaders had the full chart, and everyone else had a little notebook. Section leaders would walk down the row and tell each person where their dot was, they'd write it down, put down some sort of marker (poker chip) and go to their dot and place another marker. We'd then dress the form and if any adjustments needed to be made we would change the notes in our books. Then go back and forth between the markers on the field. Tedious.
When I as in High School - the late 70s, we were doing DCI type shows - no "ankle-knee" no "rank-and file" - pretty involved choreography. The band director taught us our show using the "one shoe on- one shoe off" technique. Meaning, we would show up on the field holding our left shoe in our hand. Reading the choreography chart, the director would take our "off" shoe and place it to the next mark, telling us, "you have the next two measures, and 14 steps to get from here to there, keeping 'corp-front' " etc, etc.
The POWER of the internet. I am not in Marching nor will ever. Seen this m.j. marching. Taped in how to understand & march how does it work. This has to be lot work for both. From tje looks of the shades & laptop what a time ago. Thx
I want to join A Design team for a Drum and Bugle Corps Organization Division 1 Competition. I already have completed show ideas/drill cooreography (with flag designs uniform designs, color added, etc) A.S.A.P! I used to March Phantom Regiment (Contra) 1996 D.C.I Champs Pioneer 1997(Contra) and The Cavaliers (Euphonium)1998
Im not sure about 10 years ago. But now you have to audition, then pay money to be in DCI bands. For uniform, food, transport. It's only during the summer and you age out at 21 meaning you can't preform after 21
I know I'm at a place but I'd love to see all these people put together and design a real drum and bugle Corps program with real drumming real marching bring it back the way it was in the old days and you'll fill the stadiums with a lot more people and have millions of fans again
I feel like the Cavaliers really sacrifice their music for the visual, and the visual isn't even all that good. How the hell did they win so many shows? Case in point: 2:59.
What you see in that point of the video is they might be working on a scatter drill part of their show? Not 100% sure. I honestly love their shows, but for a while it did seem like they would save their most difficult musical moments for when they're standing still. Over the past few years, a lot more corps have become more brave and it's paying off.
I agree on the musical aspect. I find little joy in listening to Machine but visually it was spectacular. However, 007, Spin Cycle, Frameworks, Niagara Falls were all well executed all around.
John Schwerdt yes and that makes sense, it's their life year round and they need to make money somehow, and the members have to pay because there's just not enough money in drum corps to pay for it all
it is sad that the regular kid on the Block can no longer be part of a drum and bugle Corps it was a great activity for kids and something worth working for now it's all college kids damn near professionals and instead of precision and drill it's theater now they're introducing band instruments so now it's no longer Drum Corps it's a theatrical band
plenty of local/ parade/ weekend corps around. Some market themselves specifically as "starter" corps for those looking to go world class. And there are some spectacular Open class corps out there. These corps are where a lot of the HS kids or those that can't give up a whole summer go.
Where the hell is Michael Gaines???? Please man, return to the Cavies!!!!! did you see the secret society show drill this year? they need your help, or at least your creativity

Seeing these legends so young really dates the video 😂

Reflections?
Rory Peters Franklin Central High School, in Indy
I've met Richard Saucedo a couple of time really nice dude
Richard Saucedo! I didn't know he wrote for DCI - we've commissioned a piece from him for band, and it totally sounds like drum corps writing.
michael Gaines writes drill for my high school marching band. It makes you wonder. How much drill has michael Gaines written. Lol
between DCI, bands, and WGI, ~10 shows a year since the mid 90s wouldnt be a bad guess, think 98 was his first year with Cavies...

My high school comcert band played a richard saucedo song for richard saucedo a while ago. It was cool getting some feedback from the writer.
The brains in this operation. impressive

+agogobell28 Hey, it worked.
agogobell28 pot works too.
One of the Cavalier's drill writers as of today writes drill for my high school :)
The Blue Devils drill writer also writes drill for my high school.

We pay the money to the corps to march. Worth Every Penny.
Bring back the 1991 Cavies, please.

Andy Toth is the choreographer for my band
Whoo, go Finale!
Worth EVERY.. DAMN ...PENNY!!!!
what is that program that is used for drill design?
Pyware
What Kodani13 said is true, it is 100% worth it in the end.
Are DCI's coordinate sheets 100% innacurate like our schools?
What is this software ?
@@wesleybesancon4545 sir how to get pyware
Splooie
Same! :)
Micheal Gaines wrote the drill for my hs show this year
I
Always wanted to do drill design. I’m just not good at it. 😭
I've always wanted to do this kind of thing when I get older. Question does anyone know: is this their paid career, or just a hired side job?

what program is shown, i want it
Yoshibro26 Pyware
Oh I know that, i was referring to being on the design team

The Green Machine! :D
haha richard saucedo writes half the songs my band plays in concert season!
I feel like the Cavaliers really sacrifice their music for the visual, and the visual isn't even all that good. How the hell did they win so many shows?

Have you ever watched their winning shows at all?
Yes, I have.

Niagara was good, but the brass was still pretty dirty.
I saw Bret, right off the bat i knew it was Cavies.
I think he meant the design staff. Because I'd like to know, too haha
Carmel?
Only the members pay, the design staff and tech staff get paid.
John Schwerdt yes and that makes sense, it's their life year round and they need to make money somehow, and the members have to pay because there's just not enough money in drum corps to pay for it all
Richard Saucedo is the best composer of all time
Don't they mean marching band show?? Cavies haven't been a drum corps since the early '00s.
What? 😭 They're still up there bro
I think hes saying he wants to be a show designer an if its their career or a side job. not marching
it is sad that the regular kid on the Block can no longer be part of a drum and bugle Corps it was a great activity for kids and something worth working for now it's all college kids damn near professionals and instead of precision and drill it's theater now they're introducing band instruments so now it's no longer Drum Corps it's a theatrical band

4:21 Unless you're The Blue Devils
The people who write drills must do some sort of drugs
Is making every show turbo corny and bad part of the design.
