Thank you so much for the memories rockstar 😘

All my old songs seem to have comments about GTA so I finally tried the original DOS one from 1997! It's kinda fun. I'll stop downvoting those comments now. : )

My fave song while doing vice city drive by
Written by Bob Heatlie and produced by Neil Ross, the song was recorded by Scottish folk singer Mary Sandeman. Realising that the name didn't fit the song, they decided to come up with a name to put to the single. Leafing through the telephone directory, they came upon the name of Aneka.[2] This was then released as a single and Sandeman came up with a Japanese image under which to perform the song. To their surprise, the song became a major hit when it eventually reached No. 1 in August 1981.[3] The song went on to become a hit all over Europe and beyond, although according to Sandeman, it failed to chart in Japan itself because "The melody was Chinese. - sources
The melody was chineseeeeeeee
Yeah it does sound way too Chinese
In fact, the song was released as a cover in Japan by Yukano Yamaguchi as “Chinese Boy” in 1983, two years after the release of Aneka’s original version.
ele sempre me disse essas coisas
And the melody was Chineseeeee😂
LYRICS: "People ask about him everyday"
SCENARIO: "Excuse me miss. Where's your Japanese Boy?"
It's 23:37 here and I woke up everybody laughing at ur comment, haaaa made my 🌃
Yeah. A great answer to some old b×××h getting on your case🤣🤣🤣
This is Mary Sandeman's one pop hit, she was a well known Scottish singer of traditional Scots and Gaelic songs until this came along!
I see you comment on almost every song I look up lol
Duper Cheese You must have good taste too, then!

The 80s are awesome 👍
When this song came out, it was hated by Japan for sounding “too Chinese” 😂
If this was made today, the mainstream would consider her racist while the others would consider her a weeaboo
=D too true lel
+IAmMarshicus shut up
+duck films That's why the '80s were the best.
+Sky Eye in the 80's, rockstars could be transvesties and nobody would even notice!
+IAmMarshicus now you're just trolling
I just loved listening to this song in my Infernus in GTA: Vice City. Great memories.
It's weird how a game from 2002 feels like it's directly from the 80's.
It was set in the 80's you tool
+Demon Rantz that's called atmosphere
Nemo Star It is yeah.
Demon Rantz 2002 ?! 😱😱😱😢😢😢😢 time goes so fast 😢😢😢
ConMan I’m with you, that was unconscionably dim
The Music of 80 years is wonderful.
"Mister, can you tell me where my love has gone? He's a Japanese boy." We're gonna need a better description. Just saying that he is Japanese doesn't narrow down the search that much.
Does if your in Partick, she's Scottish 😂😂
What was the 80's obsession with Japan?
I'm Turning Japanese - The Vapors
Big in Japan - Alphaville
Mr. Roboto - Styx
Japanese Boy - Aneka
It's as strange as 80's obsession with Egypt:
Gold - Spandau Ballet
Golden brown - The Stranglers
Night boat to Cairo - Madness
Walk like an Egypcian - The Bangles
(First two because of their promo clips).
Golden brown is about Heroin
RingoMorash1969 Or Australia for all that matters.
Infinite Sky in the 80's Japan was quickly becoming a economic power, Japanese electronics "Sony, Sanyo, Itachi, JVC" and cars flooded U.S, by the 21 century Japan would be the 1# superpower, so, Japan was the future, as you can see in Blade Runner.
"PS: sorry for my English"
Big in Japan as well
This song makes me cry every time. It makes me think everytime about something that started and then suddenly ended. It's so sad to think.
that ll soon happen to our lives too!
So she ran away from you? I wonder Why. Shame on you!!! 🤗🤗🤗
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
When It has 0% autotune It also have 100% talent.
Her real name is Mary Sandeman, Scottish, and a gold medal winner at The Mod. She could really sing
Not every time, but this time it does.

The memories that old songs keep are simply priceless
Am I the only one who finds this song incredibly sad? I sure hope she got closer after this lol
I was 13 when this song was released in 1981, I liked it then and I like it now.
Na Super
ahh the GTA Vice City feels are coming back. And well I used to have a crush on a Japanese girl lol
Shaise Kindering he said he had a crush on a japanese girl
I would literally wait for this to play on GTA and dance to it 😂
Me too, mostly cause my little cousins would say the opening words as "Eat your veggies" 😆

Good old memories when the world was a better place
ドイツ人が日本を独自の視線で見てるって感じの曲調が素晴らしいですねぇ🙋この歌は当時、日本では某アイドルが、チャイニーズボーイってタイトルで歌っていたですねぇ😅

i think Japan has a much greater influence culturally in the uk, and maybe thats the reason it was named as such. Around this time the Nippon TV made programme Monkey (西遊記) was a big hit in the uk as well as other Japan related programs and as others have said songs that reference Japan in their lyrics/titles were also very popular. i do agree that the main musical riff used in this song is more Chinese than Japanese though. Although the programme is German, Aneka is Scottish i believe. What a lovely song. ロンドンからこんにちは。
The polyphony of this song is marvelous!😘
I loved hearing this when it originally came out in 1981.
I was approximately 5 years old and as I never saw this performed on TV, I thought the singer WAS Japanese! (No idea that she was actually Scottish!).
I thought that was cool - a disco song sung by a Japanese girl!
I had a Japanese girlfriend at School at the time, so it seemed highly appropriate.
It still sounds great all of these years later and I'd sing it, regardless of the gender. It's just a classic - thanks Aneka!
Wow nice
You had a Japanese girlfriend at 5?
I've never seen this alternative performance for Japanese Boy till now. Good lord, this somehow had a cheaper budget than Michael Jackson's Rock With You.
Its like the stage director went "Alright we got like 6 people, 1 set, Aneka in a Kimono, and I nicked some props in the supply closet next door. You two fight with some kendo sticks, and we'll stick a horse in the background to keep things interesting. Okay we go two hours folks, so let's knock this s*** out quick, my coke back at home isn't gonna freebase itself."
These visuals were made for the Dutch show Toppop. Not really an alternative video
It's from a tv show, not a music video, Numbnuts! As for MJ, music videos were in their infancy.

Oh god, when those Japanese people turned up and she asked them! 🤣
I love the response of the second lad. He's like "I dunno!".
The concept of asking a Japanese person if they've seen a non-descript Japanese boy is outstanding. Doesn't narrow it down much.
Iove this song back in the 80s 😃❤❤❤❤😃
Heh, i was born in 1991, but i have studied a fair deal on 80's culture. Everything Japanese was HUGE back then. With Nintendo paving the way, Japanese culture quickly crossed the ocean and hit America's shores with a massive impact. Some anime and manga, plus a litany of seemingly low budget monster movies (most notably the Godzilla films) also helped pave the way for the phenomenon of Japanese culture hitting the U.S.
same with this generation and the anime weeab/ otaku culture.
@Alec Neate Scots and Brits are separate people. That said, America was not the only western country to experience the phenomenon of which I spoke. Britain too (and Scotland) also felt that influence. Its interesting really what happened.
@@pankuneko186 Which grew out of those halcyon days in the 80's when some of the most notable influences of anime, manga and other aspects of Japanese culture came to the western world.
@@comettamer yep
@@comettamer no. Scots and English are separate. Scotland is a part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and is physically located on the island of Great Britain. Scottish Nationalists may not want to be called British, but they are.
I love the 80s 😊
Because of the galloping bass line, I get the impression this melody would work well for a Country/Western song along the same theme:
"Mister, could you tell me where my love has gone? He's a handsome cowboy.
I woke-up one morning and found he was gone... oh, my handsome cowboy.
Ooo-I miss my handsome cowboy...!" ;)
I have a feeling that this galloping bass line is like an Iron Maiden song
La estuve buscando durante 8 años, por fin y por fin! La encontré :)
Que bueno, amigo

Such a tune, music today just doesnt get you up and dancing like the 80s music does.

This is another of my favourite songs and it is another song about Japan as it was her only number one hit song as she was a Scottish woman as her name was Mary Sanderman but she was also known as Aneka as I am dedicating this song to my old school friends who are both sisters as I hope to see them again very soon and this song is for both of you to welcome you both back into my life as you both will always be a part of my whole family and my whole life to Chris and Hester from Billyxxxxx
Am glad to watch this video. We really enjoyed dancing to the tune in 1982 at solai secondary school in Nakuru county, Kenya, way back in 1982 while in form one(monos)🤣🤣🤣as we were called, then.👏👏
Nice to know people in Kenya were listening to this song in the early 80s.
Today is the 20th of November, so happy birthday to Mary Sandeman, better known to us as Aneka.
Totally got killed on Vice City because of Aneka. Crashed a flaming Romero's hearse into the ocean and refused to exit the vehicle because my jam had just come on Flash FM. I know Tommy couldn't swim, but I'll still blame Aneka and her catchy tune.
Back in the day there was a Toonami ad in the UK where this song played for a few seconds over a Tenchi Muyo promo clip. Memories and nostalgia. Still trying to find that original TV clip.
Wasn't also used in the Super Mario Sunshine TV commercial?
The 80s are awesome 🇺🇸👍

The link between Scottish and Japanese music is the pentatonic scale. 'Auld Lang Syne', 'Skye Boat Song' and 'Mairi's Wedding' use the pentatonic scale.
