Today I sat down with some Gouache and tried it for the first time! It was a very fun challenge I’ve had planned for a couple months. Before anyone asks, no this was not inspired by Jazza, my video has been planned for a long time and sometimes us artists just have the same ideas! However, in order to avoid anyone saying I didn’t credit Jazza, here is a link to his video in which he made an awesome piece with Gouache;

Isn't Gouache basically the result if acrylic and watercolour had a baby?
This comment is underrated
Is it? Seriously asking, because I don't have any idea. I see it at the stores, but apparently I even pronounce it wrong.
Mike Hilbert It's like opaque watercolours (:
Yes

@ *mocha_melody *
Not really, Gouache is just opaque watercolour, like “normal” watercolour it can be re-wetted after it is dry, it will not become waterproof as acrylic will. It is very good for building layers, but you have to be careful not to scrub the new layers or they will mix with the lower layers. I found it very good for painting feathers or fur. Once you get sufficient thickness the new layers “sink” giving you very subtle effects.
There is also an acrylic gouache, which I have never used so cannot comment on it.
For a minute there when Chloe was peeling paint off her palette I felt like she was channeling @simplynailogical
💿💿💿💿
HOLOOOOOOO
lol same
Holo my friends
Real Question: Could she use simply peel or a peel-off base coat to cover her palette and make cleaning it easier?
chloe:....pigmented
me: ahh theres what i was waiting for
"It has 16 sheets and with as slow as I paint it should last me about 5 years." 😂👏🏼 I've never related to an artist more than I did when you said that!! 😂👌🏼💜
Gouache great because it’s so easy to get different effects from it, it’s basically like watercolours and acrylics mixed together. I also think it’s really nice to apply because it’s so smooth. Though I feel like sometimes it can be a bit bumpy and uneven when it dries
Never got bumpy with me
And i use a really cheap brand haha
Pollygone Illustration this! I have gotten some of my pieces from using it, though. The color is so saturated but also can be manipulated easily.
@@Snookiekills have you tried using it with acrylics? If you are looking to make a piece using mixed media , acrylics and gouache actually go well but you have to remember which you can re-activate and which you can't lol. I do that when i am too lazy to mix a color i want and have that shade in a different medium
That’s why they call it opaque watercolors 😀👍🏻
Gouache is watercolour paint that is thick and creamy in consistency, and so has the ability to be opaque. I love painting with it. It dries quickly, however, it can be mixed with Gum Arabic to lengthen drying time, and iridescent mediums to give it a sparkle or shine. Blending is easy, it's no different than normal waterpaint. You can layer or use it as a wash. You can wet your paper and the Gouache will spread and mix just like water paint if fluid enough. Dried on the pallet, it activates just as water paint does.. The main differences, are, the Opacity of the paint its 100% once the paint is dry, you can layer lighter paint onto dark and even the white is great! However, if you layer the paint too thickly, it will crack just like the old poster paints used to. Its a strange paint, it's rich and creamy as in oils, versatile as waterpaint, and has the lasting quality of Acrylic. You can even use it on canvas, so long as it has a decent layer of Gesso on it.
Chloe: "I still haven't got a clue what I'm doing".
Me, out loud to my computer: "Well, you're doing a dang good job faking it!"
It started of great but it ended up fantastic. The light from the sun looks real.
Terrelli 9 it does
Ahh thank you so much!!! That means a lot!
Ye
Oil paint does take much longer to dry than acrylic, so it is usable for a lot longer, but you cannot actually reactivate it once it is entirely dry. (If you can somehow though, let me know, because that would be cool.)
I know that oil have an effect on it, maybe try to put a thin layer of oil ( the one you can buy to had with the oil paint while you paint) over the painting and let it sit for a day ( but do a test, it would be sad to ruin a good painting).
I was literally looking for this comment, because you can't actually reactivate oil. It blends well because it takes long to dry
you can go a long way with only tiny splodges of paint and enough water.
If you water them down enough you can make them almost work like water colours.
what you want to do with a gouache paintings is to start with really watery paint as groundwork and get thicker with every layer/the darker you go.
For blending I recommend to only try with thick layers: use a damp clean brush and blend the colours together.
I hope my comment was helpful for you, chloe.
Can you make merch with pigmentation on it? Or something like that?😂
*pigmented
She can’t use so pigmented
EXXTRA PIGMENTED
I definitely will one day!
@@ChloeRoseArt Yay! I would deffinately get that!
I always used acrylics but never painted much, mostly at parties and stuff, but after I got guaches I started painting *so much more*! Honestly love them, they're great!
Omg! I've never clicked so fast! I've actually never seen gouache before!
You're 1st congrats😘
@@greydobegay969wow never done that before...

@@nevin1180 thanks...
I'm definitely gonna start using this brand
Awful lot of people saying they've never used gouache before in the comments. Has it stopped being a requirement for art courses? I had to buy loads of the stuff when I did art at college. It's all we used.
my sister is required to use gouache in college so i was also confused
It's actually really hard to find in India where we live??? It's so weird hearing youtubers say "so I went out and got some gouache" like, what??
Perhaps a lot of the people watching aren't actually in art school. They might be too young or simply artist that haven't been to uni
@@hayazeedan I don't think it's unfair to assume that most people with an interest in art did it at the higher learning level. & I'm not saying it's impossible that people didn't go to college. I'm just saying it's odd to me that there are so many people saying they haven't used something that was the standard when I was at college.
same, we have art courses in my high school and only use gouache
i love gouache, it’s like the perfect mix between watercolours and acrylics
This thumbnail is me while im doing a test
Rick Goedegebuure LMAO same 😂
Same🤣
Hahaha🤣🤣😂
I use this same brand for acrylic paints. When I ordered my set from amazon they were nice enough to offer Benicci brushes as well and seemed so happy and attentive through email communication to ensure that the paint and brushes were working well. Their acrylics are also so easy to work with and I honestly agree with them being affordable for high quality supplies
Cool, I've never tried gouache either, so it was good to hear your opinion on it. Lovely pic - and I don't think it mattered that it wasn't completely blended. It looked good with a little bit of texture :-)
I agree i gotta get some soon
Thank you Kate! It was a lot of fun and yes I like the texture too 😀
Also good to use in calligraphy
I literally got an art ad before this video. Lmao

Hello! I love using gouache! Apparently they used to use it for posters and stuff because it's great at making solid, flat colours. I don't mix the colours like you do, I wait until it dries and add dark and light tones over the top without mixing it in, and yes add water!! Not too much water though, you want a nice paste. My favourite gouache is from The Works, and it's like 3 quid for 14 tubes - and better than Daler Rowney by a long shot, do recommend.
Hi Chloe. I am about to start my own Gouache experience. I bought some cheap gouache to start my journey with. I have set up a 'palette' of sorts that I created using a set of medicine dispensing cases, the sort that are little lidded, self contained pots, the sort used for a months worth of medicines. They are perfect to use as individual paint pans. I like my paints in pans as a rule, so they work well for me. Anyway, I start tomorrow on my very first painting in gouache, and I'm equal parts- a bag of quivering nerves, or alternately, as cool as a cucumber about the whole thing. If the painting turns out halfway decent, then I will post it on facebook for all the world to see. Thanks for reviewing Arteza. I have had my eye on their watercolour pads for a short while now. I will use your code to get them for me and my grandaughter. With regards from South Wales. UK
I love painting with gouache! Personally the only time I'm really able to blend is immediately while the paint is still wet. Reactivating the paint to blend it on the page doesn't work very well for me. (Reactivating it in the pan, to reuse it is great though!)
Her palette was the most relatable thing
Beautiful painting, Chloe. I can’t wait to see what you do with the gouache in the future.
I've learnt so so much in the last 3 days of binging and I'm so shook. You're amazing, Chloe!
Love the piece! I like watching you paint all the fun familiar characters, but every time I see you do scenery it's so much better!
“Look. Nice and soft.”
Yes Chloe. I can see the softness.
Your video's are the only art videos I can watch all the way through. You rock.
gosh ive been eyeing these for ever, they're soooo pretty and gouache seems so fun
I do agree about the texture of gouache. Definitely the most satisfying out of all paint mediums
This has got to be one of my favourite videos from you. :)
I've been interested in testing gouache myself, and now I'm convinced! Will also check out the brushes, I'm always looking for small ones for my doll and pony customs. :)
I think the painting you did was very serene and beautiful. ♡ Thank you for being an inspiration, Chloe!
I live in the UK and their gouache has been sold out for weeks on the UK site, and you can't ship to the UK from their US site, nor are their brushes even on the UK site, sad times
The gouache seems to be regularly available on the .fr site if you can manage a little bit of french on the order pages, you wouldn't even need to really navigate the site to search for the product itself, just replace the .co.uk bit in the URL when on the right page by .fr to shift to the same product on the .fr site if it exists. No idea what the shipping would be like but it might be cheaper than from the USA.
here in france they make us use gouache for arts class at school, it's actually on the list of supplies you need
also that painting looks amazing, i love the colors!
For a first time, you did an AMAZING job. The first time I tried gouache it looked like elementary school tempera 😜
Blessings❣
I done a huge painting of link from breath of the wild using these paints and I loved the vibrancy of the colours and worked very well. I found that if I left two layer down colours to dry I could use a clean wet brush to reactivate the paint and by doing so the colours blended really well. I haven't used this paint very much either and i could benefit from a few tutorials from an expert but my overall experience was that they were really fun to use.The finish was this lovely matt finish which looks so good on my wall.
I work for a craft store and I’ve tried every paint media they have to offer. I discovered gouache when I was 14. It’s been the only medium I am truly comfortable with for 9 years. You can reactivity the paint, I’ve had painting that I worked on months in between. Just small amounts of water and you almost rub the paint back to life. The only difficult part it colour matching because I find that gouache dries slightly darker than when it’s wet.
As for blending, it’s like acrylic. You have your colours you’re blending, mix half way in the pan. Then on your paper use small amounts of water to rub the colours together almost. I use feathering brush strokes to mix then go back in with a damp/dry brush to finish the blending.
Hope this helps and that we see more gouache videos. ❤️
Hannah Jay thank you for the tips and advice! That’s so cool you’ve been using it for so long! What is your favorite brand to use? 😊
Chloe Rose Art Designers gouache, not sure which brand. But I’m interested in the Arteza brand, they seem to be good quality. 😊
I love your video’s so much! You are so funny and creative and I’m always so excited when you upload ❤️
Excellent medium for calligraphy also!
I loved the video!! It was nice seeing you using gouache since it’s my favorite medium! It’s best to add some water to gouache which it will help you to work with gouache more easily but to be honest there is not rule on how you should use gouache!! 😄 You can use it both like normal paint as acrylics or more like watercolors! And that’s the best thing about gouache!
Chloe:”Hello there so this has been highly requested for a long time”I know right who doesn’t love gouache!😘😍🤣😂
wow! that looks amazing Chloe!
I'm in love with Arteza... I got it as a person who couldn't draw and now I can draw pretty decently..but their supplies are always awesome
I love the Arteza products. I'm glad you like them.
I started to use gouache last year and I love it tbh it’s basically acrylic and watercolor combined
I love gouache. I had no trouble blending it but that’s because I used A LOT of water. I used it like watercolour for the background and then used it thickly with only a tiny bit of water for detail. :)
Nice picture and you will get better the more you use the paints! Hope your having a great week-end!
I just discovered your channel and love your video and your end result was amazing too even though this was your first time with this medium. I also tried gouache for the first time this month and I love it. The fact that it can be reactivated with water is a big win!! ❤️
I have tried gouache before but I used it more in the watercolour sense of filling the pan, letting it dry mostly, and then re-wetting with a spritz of water. I mostly focused on the opaque qualities when I decide gouache vs regular watercolour.
I wanted to order the gouache to try out, saw a 60 box, bought it, and realized it's acrylic hahahahaa. Oke next time i'll order gouache I guess xD
I'm obsessed with their brush pens! 90% of my painted art is using them. Ah i love the stitch and hope it becomes a print in the future. This came out really nice! I've always wanted to try gouache since it's a mix of acrylic and watercolor my fav mediums 💕
I HAVE BEEN WAITING A WEEK FOR A VIDEO!! I WAS SO HAPPY TO SEE THIS AFTER SCHOOL 😃😃😃
Izzy the Liger yay! I hope you had a good day at school!
Hey Chloe! I loved this video sm and I hope you are having an amazing day 💕
I'm in the hospital right now and my dad got me gouache by accident. I'm doing the best work of my life. Thanks for the help.
Love your videos Chloe you make me smile every time you say “Hello there” keep up the good work
I love you and your videos you and some other artists inspire me to keep drawing and doing are even when I feel like my art is really bad.
you're such an amazing artist!!
Gouache takes a while to get the hang of. I had a teacher that forced us to use only gouache so I learned to love it finally. And I'm still learning. To use it properly, don't water it down too much. (She was fond of saying it should be like whole milk.) The final art should be matte.
That being said, you can use it more like watercolor, and straight like acrylic. (However, it's expensive and using it straight uses it up faster.) I make a palette with my gouache because it can be reactivated like watercolor. The tiny brushes are awesome for gouache and small details. I found a great set on Amazon last Christmas.
Ha, I'm started using gouache too. I love that its the hybrid child of watercolor and acrylic paint.💖💖💖
I just got the arteza water brushes, and I absolutely love them!
I have been thinking to try gouache and this came in my recommendation perfect 👌
I love your videos! The more the better. You always make me laugh.
Yaaaaaaasss! I've been wanting to try those!
You are like the lovely, funny and slightly looney friend we wish we had! Good Work!
Wonderful job on your painting it’s very Beautiful😍
Gorgeous!! Very Tranquil.
Chloe, can you do a vid on tips for acrylic painting. I just bought a lot of acrylic painting supplies but I don't really know if I am doing everything right
been looking for gouache reviews for a while now thank god ur made one! planning on using gouache for rendering
really cool review Chloe :D I'm more acrylics so maybe i could get a try on these one!
I just started painting with gouache too! So far I'm really enjoying it. I think it needs a bit of water to get a nice application. You can water it down a lot too to make washes, but I think a big feature of the paint is its opacity. I haven't had much luck with the washes. Gonna have to practice some more.
I got gouache about a month ago and I love it so much, it is my favorite type of paint
This whole video is a big mood.
I swear you upload just before im about to do art it's great because I love doing art while listening to you're voice- Not weird I swear i'm sure as an artist you understand
That painting looks so real 😮
I love arteza! Their brush markers are really good and they are a great price! I recommend arteza
I love gouache paint. It's my preferred medium and being able to reactive it makes for less wastage...
Definitely best of both worlds...
i have this gouache too and i love it! you did such a beautiful job
I've been using gouache for my landscape studies and I love how it looks.
Chloe you could stick your paper before you start to paint to your desk by painter tape. When it will dry it will come back to flat paper :)
I have used white gouache before, but for skin and clothing highlights over my watercolor portraits. I'd love to do a full painting entirely in gouache someday.
I’ve seen some arteza adds around and I’m definitely getting some acrylic paper from them after this😅
Fabulous. You never disappoint.
I bought these paints a while back ago and I love it so much.
Yay new video ❤️❤️
Their acrylics are CRAZY good you need to try them!
hey chloe! love your videos and your awesome personality! keep up the good work! PS that thumb nial is me the majority of the time! :)
One thing about being an art youtuber is that you get free supplies. I love stationery products, if you can’t tell.
i love all of your art my favourite paintings ad drawrings that you do are your dinsey ones i slo like the videos when you try different things that nobody has ever really heard about
love the video! i wanna try gouache now!!
Gouache is great ♥ ! Best of all, if you have extra paint on your palette and leave it for months, you can still reactivate it with water and use it!
I really want to try those now.💖😍
Hi Chloe
I use arteza gouache and I love it. Mistakes are easily rectified as the opaqueness means I can layer multiple times,. Also enjoy the Matt finish but like you I find it difficult to blend without lifting it off the paper; more practice needed for me I think. I also have the arteza expert colour pencils which I’m also a fan of. Anyway, I enjoy watching your videos, you are entertaining with your humour and your art work is fabulous. Take care
Maria 😊
Chloe this painting was truly beautiful and you should really do more of these videos but also practice other skills like cooking which may sound out of the box for an art channel but you should expand your horizon
Ohhh
I wanna try arteza
I love gouache paints especially when combining with watercolours, as you can cover up watercolour mistakes and add depth. 😊
The Arteeza tube design looks very expensive, yet reasonable priced.
Honestly how on earth do you get your eyeliner looking so good?! It’s so even and BLACK and just so pointy??
What eyeliner do you use?!
Also this video is brilliant, I love that I feel confident that you’re constantly telling the truth about a product and that if you like it, it’s probably a good shout to get it 🥰💚
I was pretty impressed with the arteza gouache. Great value!
I always smile when I see that you have uploaded a video
Hi Chloe ! Blending is difficult with Gouache , but you can achieve similar results by going 'thick to thin' to achieve colour changes and 'hatching techniques' which will sometimes result in 'blending ' …… Cheers ! John ( The Arty Zone )
The struggle of having a dirty palette when using acrylics! Love the satisfying peel off.
I love your painting.
