    I have painted with Gouache, Tempera and Acrylic for over 25 years and for the longest time I didn’t know what’s what. I always had just bought paint in tubes and didn’t bother which kind I bought. And I dealt with the paints as they were and combines all three kinds. Took me forever to realize that Gouache and Tempera are water colors 😅 Today I am aware of the differences and I find Acrylic most convenient. But I also like the matte finish of Gouache. So I still use all of them and also combine them when necessary.

      Question! I'm new to gouache and i've heard that the media tends to crack. How possible is that to happen and if its due to aging how could you prevent the paint to crack?

    • @jaredtreanor8499
      @jaredtreanor8499 2 года назад +1

      @@bananamanchuria It's less to do with ageing and more to do with the thickness of the paint film. gum arabic isn't a good binder for painting thickly, it has relatively poor adhesion which leads to flaking and cracking in thicker applications. If you're worried about cracking, you could try some of the Acrylic Gouaches on the market, I believe Holbein's is very popular. Acrylic is far more flexible than gum arabic with much stronger adhesion so it's way less prone to cracking than traditional gouache.

    Gouache is amazing! I primarily use it for making medieval illuminations for the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism), which are then given out as awards to the populace :) I use them with a combination of ink and genuine gold leaf, and I use them opaquely...I'll put a dab of the paint onto my palette, along with a drop or two of water and mix it well so that it resembles more like melted ice cream, and it paints like dream! If you would like to see some samples of my illuminations, let me know, I can DM you some links to them :)

    This is so pretty 😍
    Since you mentioned having a bit of trouble with blending skin tones in the video, you can use a clean brush just with water to blend or work in layers of less and less water. Gouache is basically watercolor with chalk in it, so it behaves a lot like that. It can also crack if the paint is really thick xD Starting with lighter layers can actually be better (depending on your subject) because the lower layers are less likely to reactivate and mix. Works a bit like oil paint with thick over thin.

    • @tymondabrowski12
      @tymondabrowski12 2 года назад

      Better guache don't have chalk in it anymorw, just pigment and binder. Pigment is differently made than in watercolors and there is more of it, that's why it's more opaque. You can see that transparent pigments will often still be more transparent than others in guache form, too.

  • @guardianofkeeps1949

    Wow the gouache looks so good, that's crazy how vibrant it is that it can act like acrylics but also watercolours. They seem so forgiving compared to the other two mediums too. I'm doing an artwork for my art assignment that uses watercolours and I'm finding them challenging as they target my weaknesses, mainly impatience. Gouache might be the medium for me.
    The artwork also turned out awesome, you captured the character so well. I did think the colours were icky at first for the skin tone but then I remembered her skin tone is that colour so ... great job!

  • @SpySkater1

I want to see you interpret more characters the way you did with Powder/Jinx.

    • @ADCArtAttack
      @ADCArtAttack  2 года назад +3

      I try not to over think the process and I find it makes placing shadows/lights easier.... if you look at it as realism and not art, we all understand and see shadows daily. You just need to tap into that. Best to not think about it, and just do :)

    Shameless request. Please try out Crayola Supertips with an Aquabrush in the future! I’ve never found anyone else try using them with the brush as a blender like I do, and I’m dying to know how a pro who’s used many different alcohol markers can compare them. I think the right techniques and the brush can give really smooth and clean results that are super impressive, but I don’t know how they compare to more expensive materials like Pro Markers or Ohuhu markers.

    I enjoyed this show too! I have used gouache for many years, but I really must tell you that is really is just opaque watercolor paint. I am glad you have found it so inspiring and I encourage you to keep working with it! I will say acryl-gouache is just manufactures attempt to make money on the resurgence of the popularity of gouache. Acrylic paint is variable in its sheen from semi matt to glossy surfaces. Acryl-gouache is just flat acrylic paint. With all of the problems and benefits of acrylic paint. Gouache reactivates like watercolor, you experienced the flexibility of gouache and trials of lifting of the pigment. One thing you might remember is that you can go back over the picture more than once and one of the things that has kept gouache in the fashion industry as a mainstay. Going over a design changing one aspect or another while leaving the portion the designer wants left alone! I recommend Turners Gouache if you decide to move into a more professional brand. Windsor & Newton is also a recognized brand that is popular, be sure to get the professional line and not the student paints. I know you like their markers, so you might try them next. I hope you keep going and see what else you can do with real quality paints! Go For It! Glad your feeling better ! Take your time and get your rest.

    It is a rather good start but now you need to do it much more to really get good at it. I hope to see many more gouache paintings from you in future videos.

    The first time I used gouache it was for a drawing class and my teacher was a really strict grader that only gave anyone in the class a C so even though I loved using it, I convinced myself I was bad at it because I never got a decent grade on any of my assignments. Since taking that class I've been hesitant to pick any kind of art supply up and use it again, but since I'm on winter break and it's been about a year since I took that class, I might try to pick it back up again and give it a real try. Thanks for reminding me how much I love this medium.

    Hi ADC, this painting is amazing!
    I was taught to use guash in high school in my arts class, which was really nice, as they are very user friendly. I didn't know much about other types of paint, so it's nice to see a RUclipsr use this type of paint too :)) I really like how you always try new things and experiment with art!
    Happy New Year!

    If your wife was willing, would you two consider doing a video together of you both doing some art? Maybe it could be a q+a style, and if she doesn’t wanna show her face thats totally fine. Would be fun to see some of her work one day!
