I’m definitely more comfortable with pencils- but I love so much about markers. And my favorite is to combine both!

Extra note: if you don’t like the pencil textured look, there are ways to remove this completely. Burnishing, blending pencils, or solvents, plus choice of paper- they all make a difference and can make 2 pieces of art with the same pencils look like entirely different media.

@@exaggeratedswagger9951 I personally love Prismacolor, but not everyone does. They are soft, easy to blend, but they do break easily so I recommend a gentle sharpener (like Tgaal or Dahle 133)
For paper, you can start with anything, and a lot comes down to preference. Personally I really like Bristol vellum.

As a graphite pencil artist, I can't say how much I agree with the feeling of connection between the pencil and paper. That tactile sensation helps guide my hand.
Also my personal style is to let the texture of the paper shine through. I typically shade with only the tip of the pencil itself. Though there are certain effects I will use some type of blender.
I like both.. But, hear me out. I think the markers are better if you're doing a cartoon/illustration style piece and I think pencils are better if you're doing realism or any art piece that would benefit from "grit."
First I felt like saying “Why can’t they both just get along?” I believe that you get the best results when you use both together! Oh! The broad chisel nib is from the marker origins used in technical/architecture drawings. The broad chiseled nib can give large areas with straight lines this is why they are included in so many brands, they work great on car illustration as well! I hope that answers the question about why the broad chisel nib is still an option for most marker brands. I liked the pencils more but I gotta say you do wonderful things with your marker art! Well done young man, well done!

Both of them look great. ADC. As a coloured pencil artist, I like how the Prismacolours turned out, produced a textured look. While, the pro-markers give a clean. polished look.
I’m fascinated by the fact that as you go up in number in the sets that the price per marker and pencil increases. the only real difference I see is in the reds. The pencils look better to me. Also you can use water to blend pencils.
It actually makes sense, if you think about it... The bigger the set is, the more different colors are included, while also including colors, that are part of the smaller sets. Also, I think they tend to sell more of the smaller sets, than of the big ones... So that means, the colors of the smaller sets have much higher production volume, which makes them cheaper to produce.

There are different things you can use like alcohol and other solvents as well that we all make blending them easy af
Some colors are expensive to make blues in particular tend to be expensive to make of you ever wanna see go look at individual paints and see how much each color costs for example
He used prismacolor premier wax based pencils, they can’t be used with water. There are watercolor pencils like Albrecht Dürer and they have very nice effects but are not the same as traditional colored pencils wich you blend, layer etc. They are a very time consuming medium but the realism and detail one can achieve is amazing. You can blend those with odorless mineral spirits .
I like a mix of markers as a base and colored pencils over that for their details. I also would advise for a better quality pencil than Prismacolor, like luminance or lightfast or Polychromos.
With Polychromos I found the 24 set has the best price per pencil. Other brands the biggest set is mostly cheaper per pencil but not by that much. Single lightfast pencils cost 4.90$ but in the bigger sets it is about 2.40$ per pencil. Quite the difference.
I love both for different reasons. I love how more intense you can get with the shadows with the pencils but i also like blending and effects with markers (i use both as an artist). But i have to give it to the pencils which is really hard cause both are great
To me it's a bit like "do you prefer DC or Marvel?", What i mean is the pencils have this gritty looking dark texture to it like DC where as the markers are very much more clear, less dark and a hella lot more vibrant like Marvel, So i honestly couldn't choose who i think wins in this one, because they both look insane with their own distinct qualities.
While I'm better at pencils, I feel that markers are the ultimate option for comic book-style illustrations. You should do this again, but on the ultimate surface for both mediums, Bristol board. Both can be much better blended on bristol board than on sketch paper.
I’m sure so many others have already commented, but ya. Pencils have a huge learning curve! I’ve just started using them myself a couple months ago. Gamsol or some other mineral spirit is the best, easiest way to blend big pieces vs burnishing.

Avoid pressure to fill in with the color pencil as you will crush the tooth of the paper. Spend more time than more pressure.
Also, always work light to dark. It is way harder to lighten a dark area than darken a light area and as the art progresses how apparently light or dark an area is will change as you fill in other areas.

Glad you chose Prismacolor pencils. I prefer their softness for the way I draw. Some people prefer harder pencils. Not all pencils are the same so try different brands. Also, different papers matter; cold press, hot press, cloth vellum, watercolor paper, all have their time and place.

I thought markers would actually smash pencils but wow pencils took the win without a doubt! Turned out amazing!
The texture laid down by the pencils sealed it for me. The markers give such a smooth polished result. But the texture won me over. Great job in both genres.
I find it amazing how much the colors match. any other time you can always tell that one Red is not like another Red but here it's just amazing how they look like the same company made them so that when an artist uses one or the other, Red is Red, Burgundy is Burgundy, ect.. Even the Skin Tones match. More proof why a lot of artist will use pencils and markers together. The ability to match colors is just fantastic.
I honestly prefer the pencils exactly because of the texture they make. Although I like the vibrancy of the markers so I guess that is why they tend to use them both in the same artwork to combine the best in both. ☺️

A tip of you're just coloring with pencils: don't bother with the blending pencil if you can help it. Choose a lighter color, maybe the highlight color of pencil in the area you're working, and blend using that. The color blender pencil has a tendency to dull down the color, the equivalent of watering down paints. Blending with an actual color, even if it's the white pencil, will help keep those colors vibrant.
Making Art is very time consuming, but worth every min! Both are awesome. I'll have to choose color pencil side. 🔥

I'm still a fan of using markers for a quick base and then adding the texture via pencils on top tho because I have no patience xD
So that's what you learned animation and stop-motion for. Cool editing every hour of practicing animation and stop-motion was worth it
I was expecting markers to win but the pencil half is so gorgeous and the texture. Definitely makes me more motivated to learn how to use pencils
I illustrate fairy tale books. I like to make a base layer with alcohol markers and then do colored pencils over it because I can get more of a painterly or realistic style with them. I don’t use prismacolor as much anymore though. I love the luminance and lightfast pencils and Polychromos for details, so it can get expensive too.
I love how gritty the pencils look. I think it provides a bit more realism.

i love both of them equally and sometimes, a certain piece of art is better done with the right tools.
I love how the drawing came out. I like to color with prismacolor pencils and I have found if he wanted the red to become more vibrant, he should have blended with a pink and then gone over the other parts with a deeper red color. Use your lightest color as the blender. Purple or brown is a great way to add shadows to red.
I like that drawing Omni-Man from memory results in your personal style coming out more which in turn results in a slightly more anime Omni-Man.
the thing is, the white bit of clothing and the eyeballs go to the markers, the iris, hair and the reds of the clothing go to pencils,
the skin is close but i prefer the markers as it's more saturated and has more contrast while the pencils just get blacker(if you know what i mean)
the hair is also a close one too tbh
Hey, as a major pencil and colored pencil artist, I really appreciate you mentioning how time consuming they are. I have worked on drawings so long that I have broken blood vessels in my fingers, from holding the pencils too long. I even have a permanent dent in my dominant hand's pointer finger, and if my nails aren't perfectly cut, my middle finger's nail is warped by the pencil being up against it so long. I work at an art store, so other people see it and go "oh, pencils or oil paint?" And you know, I did oil paint a little when I was young and they're still not dry....30 years later. (that is a joke).
I have actually adapted the blended "colored pencil over marker" trick. It's just so physically demanding to fill in every single little piece and I use mineral spirits to blend them and putting down a quick layer of alcohol ink just speeds that process up. My one friend was like "you're being lazy" and I'm like "child, I want to be done with this drawing before I'm 40."

Just wow.... I'm an Marker Artist using mainly with Promarkers and used them for a good few years after first watching and becoming a big fan of yours, I have also use prismacolor pencils and did solo art pieces with them as well. Suffice to say I a use both art mediums but lean more to the marker side. In this video i truly thought the win would go to the markers easily, and I definitely have to say... while its a close fight im wrong in my own opinion. The texture, easier access, and bigger popularity of the pencils took the win and I love it. Also I love the beginning animation, it was a new surprise but a good one, I hope you keep making amazing artwork and videos and I hope one day I get to be lucky enough to stand side by side to my idol as a True Professional Artist!
For me, I like the pencil side. I find them more approachable since they're generally cheaper for a decent set. I am also someone for whom tactile response is important, and with brush-tips I don't get that feedback. I also have a storage-space issue, and pencils are easier to store. No requirement for blending within a certain period of time, though pencils and markers share the blending issue. Crayolas don't blend as well as Prismacolors due to the leads being harder. So you either go back over and layer (like you're taught to do in art class) or press harder. That all being said, I do like the fact that you use both in conjunction with each other, allowing them to play to their strengths and building a final art piece that is more than what either could do alone. Markers for coverage and pencils for finer detail work. Ultimately, one should choose the right tool for the job, IE what will make the artwork have the look that the artist wants.
Beginer painter here and I'm Team Pencil. Even without your commentary(which is awesome-performance artist here.) The colorless blender, truely a Lathandrian relic,hehe but like you mentioned.."..raw".."emotional"..."the physically feeling". I guess we humans are tactile creatures at the core. From our very first reach for sustenance on our Mom to the control of our devices, we want to grasp things. The pencils did that for me. Thanks Anthony. I'm not a professional, but I do love drawing.
When I was quite young, in my teenage years, I got copic markers for the first time and it was horrible. A very very big disappointment. Maybe I got the wrong paper or it was because I was so used to pencils, that it made me sad to see the bad results I had.
While growing as an hobby artist I learned about Faber Castells polychromos, which amazed me, because of how pigmented they were and how good they were after being scanned.
A few years ago (5years) I finally gave markers a try again. As I have grown, my techniques have grown with me and I watched so many people using them.... So I was way more prepared.
So today I use both and love both. It always depends on what I draw... Sometimes I only use markers like for my sticker advent calendar.
Sometimes I love using pencils, like I do for my pen& paper character portraits, because it looks more natural.
Both are great. And as someone who is really just enjoying drawing as an hobby... It's not about having the best or most expensive material.
It's about the fun and the options you have ;) and I do prefer having options.
That's my experience.
I really like the grit of the pencils but the vibrancy of the markers is really attractive. All in all I don’t think it’s one over the other in terms of “being better” but I feel like the style of piece kind of dictates which one to use. Plus, in your hands both are amazing! Just getting into drawing and illustrating and finding this channel is so informational and appreciated❤️

I feel like you should spend some time watching Temi Danso here on RUclips. She's spectacular. She lays down the color with marker, then adds tons of depth and precision with the pencils. The marker underlayer moves things along much faster than without. I would love to see you give that a try some time and see how you feel about it.
If people ask I say I'm a marker artist. Ive been using markers for a really long time and it's only lately I've been incorporating pencils into my work. I've done it here and there before but it's only recently that I started doing it seriously. I still use markers but only as a base, my detail, texture, blends and even my shading and light come directly from my colored pencils and I am absolutely in love with how they come out. If I had the patience for it, I would use Colored Pencils by themselves.
Nice video ! I'm a marker person but i'll have to agree with you on the pencil win , probaly more affordable and if you really invest time and practice into them they can really look smooth and beautiful just as proffesional as markers , i also like the rougher texture you can have with them and therefore the artist has diffrent ways of approaching their artworks
I used to use markers all the time (Copic specifically) and it always gave a professional finish that people wanted. Having said that I am pencils all the way. The texture and grit and emotion behind the pencils just feels more organic and "alive".
In the end I got rid of all of my markers and now I paint with watercolours and I am much happier with these, but that is just my go to. Pencils or watercolour paints :D

As I've worked to grow my collection of materials and of been trying to invest more time into art, I think I have to be team marker. With the key determining factor being TIME! I'm a new mom and have very little time that I can spend throughout the day working on it. If I have to choose between a 2 hour marker piece or a 5 hour pencil piece, I'm going to get more reward from the markers. I think it also helps that when it comes to markers I know which brand I like. I still don't know with pencils and there is a huge difference between technique with wax based vs oil based. I like the idea of mixing mediums but often by the time I've finished with the markers I don't usually add much with the pencils.
Another great video! That's a tough one. I use waterolor, but just started experimenting with color pencil. I really like color pencil, well pencil work in general. You're right though the more time you spend on your piece with the pencils it gets better and better. Plus to take away some of that graininess, you can use solvents to blend them out. I have not used markers in awhile. Need to go back and try them again.
Wow that surprised me. Being a realism pencil artist that’s my favourite ( though I use Derwent colour soft). I like the both of them together with your comic characters.
I'm really interested in markers but the cost is my main concern and as a person who is working on my pencil skills right now I know that it's hard to beat good pencils for that photographic look, which I really like. I really appreciate this video.

I love drawing been doing it all my life and when I came across Windsor and newton pro and brush markers I wanted to try them and combine color pencils and it made my drawings more outstanding! And I cant pick one side I love drawing in markers and color pencils! But markers for me!
Team Pencils ! They improve your skill and endurance more, looks amazing and also much much much cheaper.. you dont even need expensive prisma colors
6:54 I very used to ProMarker pen. iv got around 70-80 of them.
And that fine tip you want !.
You can get an extra tip for ProMarker, to put over the fine tip on the pen, so you get that 1mm thin tip. And it can stay on and it has extra cap to protect to.
Pen gets like 6-7mm longer because of that extra tip. And a 3pack of them cost like 2-3dollar. And can be switched between the pen.
I bought all my ProMarker's individually, not that big price different to hand pick 20-30 or get a package with as meny.
When hand pick colors, you can try them first so they work, if in a store.
Really nice to draw with this pen/markers.
I love both mediums, I think though when you mix the markers and pencils this is the best effect. Use the markers for the main colour base colour , do your shading in markers then come in white the pencils and add more depth. It makes drawing quicker and well more fun. Have a great weekend. Side note: some of the solvents would certainly give the pencil side of the drawing a good kick!
Use the markers where you need to cover a lot of ground, and use the pencils for detail. Also solvents for the pencil helps a looot to save time
The grittiness of the pencils really suit the character's vibe more than the markers but markers give the flexibility of being very smooth. But i really like Pencils
I got to give it to the pencils here because in terms of versatility and price. I’ve seen absolutely mind boggling pieces done with just pencils. There really isn’t a limit on creativity for them and they’re easier to replace and produce versus markers. I genuinely believe you can get a lot more mileage from pencils than markers so I’d give it to pencils. Although I very very much love markers having a set of pencils can really elevate your drawings to that next level :)
They both look amazing, but the thing about the pencils is that they look more realistic to the artist. Markers are amazing, not going to lie, but with pencils, you can see all the little bumps that you had, the journey, yes they take time, but they look amazing in the end. I am not an artist, but I can say that pencils give you this feeling of time, and they are the thing people love the most in the end. They look more realistic in the way of art too. Markers look like an animation, but pencils look real. That's what I love about them.

I like the smoothness of the markers, but I like the shading of the pencils.
I'm assuming you already know, but I'd like to point out that you can use certain solvents(?) like mineral spirits or alcohol to blend color pencils even quicker for smooth, vibrant results. Supposedly, I've yet to try this haha; but I'm curious to see if it'd have looked better than using the blender. In the very least, it'd have been faster!
Personally, though, I like the smooth, flat finish of markers-they just look so satisfying! But for me, they're the harder medium to use just because of how uncontrollable they are, unlike color pencils where I can go soft and slow. It can be quite unforgiving, which makes it harder to get into. Not to mention how hard small details are!

The marker size probably looks better but there is something about pencil art that just can't be beat in my opinion
I think the markers look like markers and the pencils like pencils, I think you are right, skill makes a big difference. I have used pencils for years and only switch to markers after watching your videos a few years ago, and am enjoying working with them more than pencils. My point is you are comparing two different media, like Oil paints on canvas vs finger paints on stone.
I think the marker is better objectively, but I prefer how the pencils look personally

As a total amateur, I use the alcohol markers for many reasons. However, since watching your videos, I have used pencils on completed marker artwork, and that gives an amazing depth - really depending on the actual paper used.
So both are great, but together they are outstanding!

One thing you can definitely say about pencils over markers. They have a superior colorless blender.

I am a colored pencil artist, so I am totally biased. I LOVE my Prismacolor pencils, despite their quality control issues. Hot tip: If your pencil is breaking when you sharpen, use a hair dryer on the pencil until it is hot (not too hot to touch though), let it completely cool off, then sharpen it. It should be solid.
I don’t know why everyone hates the broad nib so much. I use it all the time for big areas and I get no streaks
You always do great art works. Thanks. I see both mediums as great things to work with, but I think it's probably best to use each of them for what ever kind of texture you want. Here's a challenge. What medium would you want to use for a different texture item. For Skin, Metal, Fabric, plants, environment, or anything else? Try using pencils on skin and markers on clothing items and vice versa. Just an idea. If not, I apologize.
TEAM PENCIL: I've been using pencils for years in my coloring books and nothing compares to the endless depth they can go, however in more recent years I have been using markers and they are better for quick illustrations. I love them both for different reasons and projects.
I like the texture of pencils and the lighting came off super natural. But I haven’t looked back once I started using markers

I am by no means an artist so maybe that explains my difference in perspective, but I can't imagine that the average person goes for markers over pencils. Pencils may take more time and effort but they are the epitome of "easy to learn, hard to master." Markers are fast to finish with but that also makes them very unforgiving with mistakes.
I liked the pencil half better. It has a matte finish, and you can definitely tell someone created it by hand, even the details are more noticeable. The marker side is really good and more vibrant, but it looks like someone could have printed it from a computer, which I think would be hard to do with such a detailed pencil drawing.

I just got out of school and I opened my phone to a new ADC video, also it’s thanksgiving weekend, life couldn’t get better
Tip number two: if you're going to be using Prismacolor pencils, get yourself a grinding pencil sharpener, not a shaving one. Prismacolor pencils are notoriously crappily made. The wood is soft and tends to chip really easily, and the pencil-making machine at Prismacolor was probably designed by a drunk dude because pretty much every core in every pencil is lopsided to some degree. This means when you use a shaving pencil sharpener, the lead will end up breaking off 99% of the time instead of actually sharpening to a point. A grinding sharpener (like the ones you used in elementary school that were screwed into a wall and were so loud the entire class had to stop and wait for you to be done) is your best bet for actually getting the pencil to sharpen to a point without breaking.

I love my ohuhu markers because my hands hurt less while using them BUT I love my prismacolours because i like the feeling of colouring in with pencils….so I just take a page out of your book and use both 😂

I like the "comic look" of the markers. Because...super hero / comic. Duh!
BUT..
I found myself actually LOOKING at the coloured pencil side about 3 times as much.
..
So... I think that give me my conclusion: If you are reading a comic book or graphic novel...give me the markers. I enjoy it, I love the look, and I can ignore it and read the story part without distraction. If you are looking at a piece of "art". A nice big scene of some super hero fighting a villain on the street... coloured pencil, easily.

Pencilss = "Oh, cool! Look at that! Oh, and there, look at the texture! Hey, is that a tattoo or bruise on his arm? Hmmm. oooh! That shadow in the back, looks like someone is peeking out of it, doesn't it"?

I started with pencils (many years ago). Didn't think that they could be topped for the comic style illustration. BUT, I now use markers (colic & promarkers) & I get a better result. But (AGAIN THERE IS A BUT) I finish fine detail with pencils.
So, let's just use both & be happy, wonderful artists. 😁
Wow, im surprised those pencils preformed amazingly. On the pencil side the blood looks more real cause it has that faded look to it. I knew the markers would preform i never though the pencils would do so great so i chose pencils.
It's not a matter of a winner. Just use the right tool for the right job. Burnishing color pencils is definitely a chore, but you simply cannot get the same level of definition or texture with markers. Alcohol markers on the other hand are awesome for quick saturation or uniform large areas. So just layer them as you see fit

So true about pencils being more tactile. Honestly, they also have the added benefit of being mostly lightfast these days, which markers don’t tend to be. And they’re able to get tiny details.
However, also true that pencils as a medium require ridiculous patience xD I don’t think I’ve ever completed a pencil drawing that took less than 6 h 😅😂 Then there’s the fact that your paper and the texture play a huge role in the process and the end result. Basically, pencils are awesome but complex xD
Now you should make a piece which uses every medium to make the best possible artwork you can. Each medium has their own pros & cons but together they bring out the best in all of them.
For some reason I feel like the pencils have an extra layer of depth and life when compared to the markers, so I kinda like the pencils more

I love that physical connection with the drawing that pencils give. That's why I haven't been able to do digital art, I just don't enjoy it.
I think the markers take much more skill and that the pencils allow you to layer and layer the the markers are an immediate result so you don't get as many chances to correct your shading. Just my two cents. Awsome job thanks for sharing 👍
My favourite way of blending coloured pencils is with the colourless blender alcohol markers. Isopropyl alcohol is a fantastic solvent for coloured pencils, it breaks down the wax beautifully.
when you know how to use markers and pencils the result depends on your skill with them.
One of the big differences is the time it takes with each one, and the difference is big.
I don't know if you've already mentioned it in another video but pencils and markers also work very well together. I usually combine markers with different techniques such as chalk, pencils, gouache, etc.

This piece turned out super cool. You definitely made a super pissed looking Omni Man, and it’s fantastic. A lot of people are saying they like the pencils, but me personally I like the markers. I like being able to get smooth coverage and fill in large areas a bit faster. Texture can be super important in some drawings or depending on aesthetics, but I’d rather have that texture on top of a smooth background color so the texture of the paper itself doesn’t really show through like you can’t get around it. Still, awesome piece and both sides look great. I’m hoping to see someone try markers like Crayola markers with a waterbrush for blending, because from my experience I think they can work almost just as well as alcohol markers, but I’m not sure my skill level is good enough to make that comparison

Mmm, I think its a tie for me
It is kind of even - the face looks equally good on both sides, gray part of the costume looks better with pencils, while the cape looks better on the markers side.
I feel like the pencil side looks like something that was definitely drawn on paper, whereas the marker side to me looks like something from the actual tv show. Almost like the marker side was printed. They both look amazing, and it is so hard to chose. ❤️❤️❤️
I think both marker and pencil work real good because if markers could work the right way the pencils could give it a good finish art work
