    TED Fellow and OneBeat Fellow, Artist, Composer, Multi-instrumentalist.
    21 Year Old Usman Riaz grew up playing classical piano since the age of 6. Picking up guitar at 16 Usman taught himself how to play percussive guitar. Along with these 2 primary instruments he experiments with a number of other ones such as Harmonica, Mandolin, Harmonium and percussion. His recent at TED performances and talks at TED Global 2012 and his selection for the US State department funded cultural/music exchange program OneBeat have proven to him that the internet can be used as a reliable platform to learn new things and open up pathways that seemed impossible before.

    He never called himself a genius. He said he has an aptitude for music. He wants to encourage people to be resourceful and put time into expanding their talents.
    If someone else has the opinion that he is a genius, that's that - an opinion. Everyone always regurgitates Bach, Beethoven, Einstein, Plato etc. - People who are widely accepted to be geniuses. Show some originality. Everyone loves to label, classify, restrict, put down. Positivity is the way forward.
    Take his advice and improve yourself, no matter what you're good at. That's the only way to create a genius.

And all of a sudden everyone becomes a music critic, Cant you guys just enjoy the music and not ruin the experience for others by squabbling or judging him in the comments, This guy is Good, he is extremely talented and deserves even the slightest bit of respect. But he doesn't produce worthwhile music. That's the whole point of the criticism. He shows off, he practices for the sake of being better than others. But he doesn't produce any music that anyone would want to listen to, even if it is impressive. He lives on a high horse, and I'm amazed they allowed him to give this mess of a speech.

      +Enđi Supertramp I totally agree. Sometimes I do think the titles of certain vids can invite this unnecessary competitive edge. People become immediately defensive or skeptical of videos with these grandiose titles. It almost automatically makes them want to hone in on every flaw and imperfection just to be contrary. But there comes a point where it becomes petty know-it-all speak instead of valid criticism.

    • @jameswillmus600
      @jameswillmus600 8 лет назад +1

      +Enđi Supertramp That's great and I agree, but if there was ever an example of necessary criticism, it would be this video. There's a difference between noise and music, and the lack of critiquing and demanding more from artists gives us videos like the one above. If he improves his techniques and can actually use them to make people feel something, then it will be music. Until that time, it's just fancy guitar noise.

    • @MississippiDave
      @MississippiDave 8 лет назад +1

      James - Keeping in mind this guitarist's age, his sense of time and rhythm, and the simple fact that most who would critique this player couldn't remotely emulate what he's actually doing- I respectfully beg to differ. While the technique is certainly lacking, and at times it seems like he's beating the crap out of the guitar- There is still a load of talent, creativity and potential here. But the title of this video isn't doing this kid any favors either. Calling him a genius just invites the hate. But he started playing at what? 16!? And in this video he is 21? That is only 5 years! Should we be demanding him to be on the level of Antoine Dufour in 5 years?

    • @TomasWille
      @TomasWille 8 лет назад +1

      +3e3op88 You are right, peope always been critics. But before the internet people could give critics with dignity. Now being all anonymous it's easy to give 'rude' critics and you don't have to worry about consequences.
      Also before the internet, people that gave critics about a subject, mostly knew stuff about the subject aswell.
      Nowadays, even a 10 year old who had NEVER played a guitar , think he is a university graduate in guitarplaying.
      So exactly Endi. I hate the internet community. The video's are awesome, but can't say that for the people commenting on it. In my opinion , the world is a better place if RUclips, Facebook, Twitter or any other social media discontinued the use of commenting.

      @submalevolent grace its more that he plays music that has a pretty simple sound of just mixing random notes for the impression of something really hard to play, its not that its not okay but its tricks that a lot of people use to make something sound more complicated than it is and when you play guitar after seeing it a lot it leaves a bit of a sour taste in your mouth when the get so much praise as with everybody that hones a skill just to see someone else rewarded for a lower amount of time, admitably not a good thing but it will never the less end up residing in your thoughts and at time you want to say them.

    People don't seem to understand that he didn't do what he did just by "watching the internet". As he said in the beginning he was trained in piano since he was six, meaning by the time he had a deep understanding of music theory and a developed musical ear. Using these, he was able to examine the placement of people's handling of the instrument and listen to and pick apart a chord to figure out how it works. While this is no small feat and this guy deserves every drop of praise he gets, people need to understand you can't reach that level of skill just by "watching the Internet".

Social cues don't come easily enough to figure a way to hide the bragging. And/or he seeks to have confirmation that what he is doing is indeed good. I tend to brag quite alot, and by writing this and the next line I am bragging about my ability not to brag. But I have tried my hardest not to brag in this paragraph. In my years of school I've learned to play dumb and instead of straight out saying "I know this" to say "Am I right in thinking this and this?" That way I have the reaffirmation of my knowledge and makes me for lack of a better phrase "more cocky"

    There is NO artistry here. It is pure skill. He is arrogantly bragging about himself and all the things he can do and the "genius" family tree he is part of. And like he says, anybody with access to RUclips and that much time to kill can do it. Thank you, sir. Next please.

    • @shaheenbeeharry9710
      @shaheenbeeharry9710 9 лет назад +17

      Really? Where do you see the arrogance? He showed us how he came to his path and found his passion as a musician and displayed his skill to demonstrate how we too could learn from all the information that we're bombarded with. It's true that his capabilities are great, perhaps greater than most given his aptitude but we can all learn something somewhere and I honestly did not feel any arrogance, in fact he seems a little timid almost as though he might be a bit of an introvert but an artist nonetheless.

    • @Luna-ms2sh
      @Luna-ms2sh 9 лет назад +2

      He never once said the word 'genius', and it is only the title of the video which says that he is and he isn't even the one who chose that title. He said that he was fortunate to have a family that had musical aptitude and that his parents noticed his musical aptitude at a young age. The people from Ted probably told him to talk about himself and how he became a musician through youtube, he demonstrates what you can learn and achieve through the vast i formation in the internet. He was not bragging nor was he arrogant, by critisizing him you have made yourself seem arrogant, he was chosen and he was told to demonstrate and present these things about him, once again he does not even refer to himself as a 'genius' but rather as a person who has a musical aptitude and learned through the internet and videos. Get your facts straight before you start criticizing what people do.

    • @joeldio2
      @joeldio2 9 лет назад +5

      If all of you guys are being amazed by the amount of technique you can learn from the internet, the number of instruments you can pick up by watching youtube videos and consider that would be incredible talent or genius or whatever the heck you folks want to call it, just call it and I don't give a damn. Because today, I learn that the bar has come down. Really low. No wonder, I want to look back for better music - starting from the 1960's to way back when Niccolo Paganini was around. These days people want one person to be able to play more notes, show more skills, be ‘multi-talented’ and don't appreciate music for the sounds, but much rather for how it is delivered and produced. It's about the big stage, the large crowd, the glamour, the money.
      This guy here, showed us a short passage on the piano which stopped before you could start to notice anything, the 'interesting' part of the led zeppelin tune without the groove and an ugly ass tone, and the Oh yes I play the harmonica too sounded the best of all, and his guitar composition which was a dull brag about the different things he can do on guitar. My brother used to tell me, if you can’t drive on the highway by yourself listening to something, then it ain’t worth listening. Now, why would I ever want to hear something like in my car?
      Really, it is not this dudes problem anymore. It is the people that want to watch a guy play as many instruments on stage in as little time as possible because they don’t have the time to hear a note sustained for two bars. They can’t enjoy the silence in between two notes. It’s a bourgeois world.

    "It's about the music, it's not about just showing people what you can do with a piece of wood with strings on it"
    John Frusciante

    • @tasfa10
      @tasfa10 7 лет назад +13

      But being able to do more with a piece of wood with strings gives you more possibilities in terms of music making. For some reason he did like having synths and machines as a vehicle to his music. In PBX and Letur Lefr you can hear lots of fast arpeggios played by a synth and he wasn't doing that kind of thing when he was a rock musician because his technical ability was very limited...

    • @tasfa10
      @tasfa10 7 лет назад +2

      I just meant that there's a certain struggle between the man and the instrument and it puts some boundaries to what you can do. If you extend your skill with the instrument you extend those boundaries. Frusciante never did with his guitar what he now does with his synths and there's no way he could have. His ability is just not enough. Altho I love his music I have to be realistic and admit he has some serious technical limitations. We all know his best technical effort was probably the don't forget me solo in that show in France and it was still a very basic lick and some sloppy playing. Compare that with any serious guitarist with a solo career, AS A GUITARIST, not as a songwriter and singer and producer and whatever else he does... I love him as musician in general, but he's a weak instrumentalist for a professional.

    It's funny how many musicians commenting on this video are so jealous of Usman's good fortune and his audience. He went out and got the TED gig, they did not. Good for him. Sour grapes aside, his musicianship and composing skills are incidental. The point that the negative commenters are completely missing is that he learned all these techniques to expand his creative musical expression on the world wide web -- the most powerful distance-learning tool ever devised by humanity.

Sometimes, silence between verses speaks volumes, and the ability to be precise, but maintain the feeling of a song really defines musical brilliance. But, his genius is in figuring things out, not quitting, and having a high level of intelligence that permits his skills and talents, and to present it as if it is the most simple thing in the world! What he played was not easy, simple. He has applied himself, but without the talent already being there, it won't be like this. His mind operates at such a high level, to be able to play like that, not just one instrument but several.

    To the people who say his rhythms were off while playing guitar, who's to say he wasn't playing diverse time signatures. You don't know what he was trying to do, other than to entertain. The same goes for the repetition in his solos. Bach used themes/choruses whatever you'd like to call it, and so does nearly every composer out there. This kid just added some tasteful harmonic and rhythmic variety to each of his themes. Its obvious when you're jealous, just don't talk out of your ass like you know anything.

    • @snoolee7950
      @snoolee7950 7 лет назад +3

      Eva Šetina Nine years? wtf you are a beginner and do not even know it. You think of what is music based on how long you personally have played an instrument? Yes, take that to your music school entrance interview and see how far that gets you. This video is a stupid fucking lie is what it is. And now you are a fantasy fanboi. Well have fun but don't confuse it with the real stuff. It is absurd.

    • @evasetina1529
      @evasetina1529 7 лет назад +4

      Snoo Lee I wouldn't say i'm a beginner at the instruments i play but i will deffinetely inform you when i finish with the academy of music about my progress. I'm sure i haven't mentioned a connection between sense of music and the period one plays an instrument so I don't know what that statement of your's came form. But yes, I like to be positive and see the good stuff in people so i don't know why you are being so judgy towards me. I have my opinion, you have yours and if you have absolutely nothing positive to say, please don't share the negativity onto me.

    People are complaining of his music feeling soulless, and I have my own explanation/interpretation for this: as an Asian (not that this is exclusive by race) who was musically and artistically trained since basically when I came out of the womb, I've been around a lot of other people like me. Second generation Asians in America are bound by parents pushing them to be the best in the "Land of Opportunity" (the US) and many people (including me) found that the arts they started on at a young age, pushed upon them by their parents, to be something to simply be the best in, and not something to pursue because they loved it. Which is why many second generation Asian youth, when demonstrating their skill in the arts, seem mechanical. This mindset, sadly, slowly but surely destroyed any love I possibly had for music over the years, but some grow out of the confines and develop a love for it, a passion, and fill their works with feeling. In fact, that's my relationship with physical art. And I think that's what this guy's going to become, with music.

      Every young American boy wants to play guitar and dream of Rock Stardom.
      My wife and I both play but I just put instruments in front of my 4 kids and they were drawn to them.
      No pushing.
      They are grown now, and all play one or more. One makes a living doing it.
      In defense of Asian parents; -- I'm not Asian -- maybe they go too far the other way,
      but i don't see a whole lot of Asian millennials being coddled by our government enablers, living off my tax dollars.

    • @eggypop09

      I don't hate him but I definitely don't think he's a genius. (Fwiw I am a musician, and anyone giving a lecture entitled "[Said person]: A Musical Genius" has such a lack of humility that I-- and probably many others-- am immedately turned off by him. I don't think it's a coincidence that virtually all of the greatest musicians I have met are truly humble people who let their talent speak for itself.)

      Well he's good, and certainly better than most, but this video comes off more as him being a show-off and certainly not deserving of a TEDx,. There are countless people that are doing exactly what this kid is doing all over the world. I think he just got more attention simply because of where he's from. If he was from the U.S or England or even Canada or Australia, nobody would give a shit because this kind of talent is expected from first world countries. No doubt he's brilliant but in my opinion that's why the hate.
