      The first sports star you remember, is more accurate. Stelios Kyriakides was the winner of the 1946 Boston marathon, was awarded by the President of USA, stayed there for a month raising publicity for his devastated homeland of Greece, his efforts ultimately causing considerable aid to be sent from USA to Greece. Was greeted by one million people on his return. The Acropolis was illuminated for the 1st time after the German occupation, in his honour. A national treasure.

    One of the greatest players of all time not to play in the NBA. His playstyle was similar to that of Vinnie "The Microwave" Johnson, the back-up guard of Detroit Pistons back in the 80s. Excellent drive and shot from midrange. He is known as "the Michael Jordan of Greece", because he was the one to introduce basketball to a soccer-dominated country that Greece was back then. He will be known for his glorious battles with the man who introduced him, Bob Mcadoo.

    • @vdLeo-je6os
      @vdLeo-je6os 6 лет назад +2

      I think that his playing style was similar to that of World B. Free or Lloyd Bernard Free!

    • @KaRoU323
      @KaRoU323 6 лет назад +2

      +Ευδόξιος Λεονταράς I do not agree mate. World B.Free was miles ahead in terms of athleticism, and that fact translated into his game, with strong (and instant spin moves), frequent dunks and strength that was beyond his era. Galis had more flair, maybe more stable scoring ability but he could not "bully" his way into the lane, either he would drive and score due to his elevation or do a spin move, not to get ahead of the defender, but to create his own shot. The fact that he was fast (in Europe standards) and crafty, made him the scoring machine he was, but still I stand in my opinion that the closest thing we saw in the NBA was Vinnie Johnson. World B Free was stronger, had a larger frame and he was more of a "bully" rather than using flair, hopsteps and shooting off the backboard, like Nick did.

    • @KaRoU323
      @KaRoU323 5 лет назад

      Antoine Primiquire Don't you understand that I compare skillsets, not careers? And just a little clue about the difference between the NBA and Europe then. Bob McAdoo was a VETERAN and he was the best center in Europe. Vinnie could easily become a leader or at least an All-Star in any non-contender team. Edit:typos

    • @KaRoU323
      @KaRoU323 5 лет назад

      Antoine Primiquire Nick had amazing lay-ups, like those against USSR. However his main focus was the midrange. MJ of Europe does not equal MJ in general. Hell, is playing against Montero and Dacoury the same against Moncrief or Dumars? Nick was amazing and he could have a great career in the NBA. But don't exaggerate.

    • @HIMCULES
      @HIMCULES 4 года назад +5

      @@KaRoU323 How good Montero was, is Montero's problem. Galis was unstoppable against anyone. He scored 45 against USSR with Sabonis and Marculionis, often in Sabonis' face. Sabonis said:"if Galis wants to score, he is going to score". Moncrief is better than Sabonis now? Don't change history to help your argument. Galis is a different player from Jordan, but he did score 50 on him once, against North Carolina.

    Ο μεγαλύτερος σκόρερ μακράν του παγκοσμίου μπάσκετ, πολύ μπροστά ακόμα και από τον Τζόρνταν όσον αφορά το σκοράρισμα.
    37.5 πόντους μέσω όρο όσο έπαιζε στον Άρη όταν ο Τζόρνταν είχε βία 31.
    Ο Γκάλης σε παιχνίδια με προτεραιότητα στην άμυνα σε οργανωμένες και προσαρμοσμένες άμυνες με συστήματα κόντρα σε 3, 4 και 5 παίκτες, ο Τζόρνταν σε επιθετικό πρωτάθλημα με μόνη επιτρεπτή την άμυνα 1 εναντίων 1 και ένας κάτω από την ρακέτα.
    Ο Γκάλης σε παιχνίδια 40 λεπτών ο Τζόρνταν σε παιχνίδια 48 λεπτών.
    Ο Γκάλης σε παιχνίδια με επιθέσεις 30 δευτερολέπτων ο Τζόρνταν σε παιχνίδια με 24.
    Τις 1+1 δεν τις μετράω γιατί δεν είχε χάσει βολές οπότε έρχεται στα ίσα με το αμερικάνικο μακρινότερο τρίποντο που όμως ο Γκάλης ούτως ή άλλως δεν επιχειρούσε σχεδόν ποτέ.
    Ακόμα και με την εθνική είχε μέσο όρο 32 πόντους κόντρα στους καλύτερους ευρωπαίους παίκτες, αν βγάλεις το ένα ματς στο ακρόπολης που είχε τραυματιστεί και δεν ξανάπαιξε στην συγκεκριμένη διοργάνωση χωρίς να αφαιρέσεις τις διοργανώσεις μέχρι το 1983 που καθόταν πολλά λεπτά στον πάγκο.
    Με συμπαίκτες του στον Άρη τον Λιπιρίδη και τον Φιλίππου που ήταν φιλότιμα παιδιά αλλά μπασκετικά ήταν πιο κάτω και από τον Καμπούρη.
    Και στην Εθνική τον Φασούλα, τον Καμπούρη και τον Μέμο ιωάννου. 4 αντίπαλοι μάρκαραν τον Γκάλη και ένας τους υπόλοιπους 4

      @@doukas1983 Ποσο χρονων ειστε και λετε αυτες τις ανακριβειες; Το NBA εκεινη την εποχη ηταν μακραν το δυσκολοτερο πρωταθλημα στον κοσμο και ποιοτικα ετη φωτος μπροστα. Δεν ηταν τυχαιο που οταν η εθνικη ΗΠΑ κατεβαζε επιλεκτους ΝΒΑ σε μουντομπασκετ και ολυμπιακους βλεπαμε διαφορες σκορ πανω απο 40 ποντους. Η Dream Team του Τζορνταν το 1992 εκανε παρτυ στους Ολυμπιακους σαν να μην υπηρχε αντιπαλος. Το ασφυκτικο man to man ηταν πολυ ποιο δυσκολη αμυνα απο την αμυνα ζωνης του Ευρωπαικου μπασκετ. Τον Τζορνταν ομως τον μαρκαραν 2 εως και 3 αμυντικοι για να τον σταματησουν. Απο τους Ντιτροιτ Πιστονς εφαγε το ξυλο της αρκουδας. Ψαξε highlights να δεις διοτι φενεται δεν προλαβες εκεινη την εποχη. Επισης να σε πω οτι ο Τζορνταν δεν θεωρουνταν ψηλος για ΝΒΑ αφου ειχε να αντιμετωπισει αντιπαλους με υψος, 2,10-2,15-2,20 εως και 2.32. Και ηταν αρκετοι ολοι αυτοι. Δεν επαιζε κατω απο καλαθι οπως ο Γιαννης αλλα στην πειρφερεια και ηταν ενας πολυ καλος σουτερ απο μεση αποσταση και μερικες φορες απο μακρινη που αυτο σημαινει οτι δεν βασιζοτανε στο υψος του για τα επιθετικα του χαρισματα. Ειχε πληθωρα κινησεων οπως πιβοτ, τζαμ σουτ, φεντεγουει κλπ και αριστη τεχνικη καταρτηση αφου ουτε με αιτηση δεν μπορουσες να του κλεψεις την μπαλα. Να πω επισης στον παραπανω φιλο οτι ο Γκαλης δεν ειχε μεσο ορο 37 ποντους στην καριερα του αλλα 30.4 ποντους πετυχεντας 26.275 ποντους σε 863 επισημα παιχνιδια και σε πολυ ποιο ευκολα πρωταθλημα απο το ΝΒΑ. Ο οσκαρ Σμιντ σημειωσε πανω απο 40.00Ο ποντους. Τι παει να πει αυτο οτι ειναι καλυτερος απον Τζορνταν; Ο Τζορνταν καθεται μονος του στον θρονο του καλυτερου ever και κανενας δεν μπορει να τον πλησιασει.

    Nick Galis looked up to Walt Frazier of the KNicks, indeed an amazing athlete, versatile and effective. Nick got inspired by the KNicks championship wins and became the greatest of all time in Europe. I am glad he didn’t stay in the NBA. If he had stayed he wouldn’t have shaped the entire basketball culture and he wouldn’t have impacted our lives in such a way.

    Nikos is one of the greatest athletes of all time - you can see how difficult it is to even come close to what he did at the national and European level. We can see his greatness now that players like Nowitzki, Giannis, Doncic, Gasol, and Jokic have played in both the NBA and in Europe.

    To suggest Galis is the MJ or Bird in Greece does not do him justice. The US does not really have a figure that has so singularly impacted the sport in the country. Galis IS basketball in Greece. He took the sport out of obscurity and turned Greece into one of the world’s greatest basketball nations. And while Greece has since produced some great basketball athletes, not one comes even close on the level of impact, and all can trace their legacy back to Galis. If Auerbach had kept Galis at the Celtics - most Greeks would never have touched a basketball.

      I seem exaggerating , but if you could see him in his prime you would say the same. I could refer to many things , but the comment would be too long. I will just refer to Bob Mcado's quote about Galis (in the 80's when he was playing in Europe, Mcadoo faced Galis many times). The quote was "What I saw from Galis , I did not see from Lakers or Celtics (of the 80's)"

    Phenomenal player. And it is debatable if h did right to stay in Europe and not go to NBA. The good thing staying in Europe is that making a city into a dessert ith no cars when you play is something that is very rare to happen. I don't thing it can happen in USA. Not even for MJ.
    He had many strengths, one was his very very strong legs for his weight.
