He also refused that contract, because, he also knew that he would not have been able to sustain his style of play over a normal, real NBA full 82 game season. There were other more talented and gifted players in the NBA that would have stifled him and rendered him scoreless at times, the NBA just chose to go with "the good guys" of the league. I mean that 1988 USA Men's roster had players like Daniel Majerle, Danny Manning, Hersey Hawkins, J.R. Reid! C'mon!!!!! Really?

    Speaking of FIBA.
In 1975, Raymond Dalmau, considered by many (me included) the best basketball player from Puerto Rico, was in conversations to sign a contract with the former Utah Stars in the ABA.
Finally he declined the offer when he learned that doing so would mean he could no longer represent his country internationally which at the time was the law and for him that was much more important than signing a contract as a professional basketball player.

Another curious thing: at some moment, Oscar asked "do you remember Jack Sikma?", because Tanjević, his coach in Europe, was a fan of Sikma and taught him the "Sikma moves", which Oscar, with his shoot skills, used a lot in his career. Sikma played 9 years with the Sonics, was 7x all star and NBA Champion in 79 (the only Sonic title). Payton, who was being inducted alongside Oscar, played 13 years with the Sonics, was 9x all star and NBA champion too (with the Heat). At the time of Oscar and Payton induction (2013), Sikma was not a HOF. They "corrected" this mistake in 2019...

I'm Puertorrican and sometime in the 80s there was this basketball international competition in the island.
They had 4 games scheduled in one day at Clemente Coliseum and I had tickets to the games. I got to the Coliseum around 7am .. a friend was getting me and my brother early to the stadium.
It was all dark, the stadium was empty. I could only hear a basketball bouncing and a guy practicing. With nothing else to do, I sat and watched that guy practice.
I swear.. I saw that guy shooting for maybe half and hour, who knows how long he had been practicing. I didn't see him miss. He was incredible. I couldn't believe what I was seeing.
Later that day, the second game on schedule was Brasil versus Canada, I think.. when I saw #14 for Brasil, I told my brother.. HE'S THE SAME GUY PRACTICING IN THE MORNING. He scored 38 in that game. He was incredible.
... and that's when I knew who Oscar Schmidt was.
