Thank you, thank you, thank you! Just finished an oil painting course at the community college and this was never discussed. I had made my own list of which paints in my arsenal were transparent and which were opaque but didn't know why I needed to know! And, now I do :-)
Interesting, this cleared up the difference I had not understood before even when painting with the different paints. Hearing and seeing make all the difference. This is what my instructor had been trying to get into us.
Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment here Pam. I appreciate your kind words Pam. Thank you and take care. I hope you enjoy the other tips listed here in my channel.
Thank you so much for this absolutely valuable tip Dan. I am currently half way through a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts and I have never heard this. Just goes to show that sometimes the most useful information can be a lot easier (and free) to find through a search engine.
Hi pipespalette! I appreciate you taking the time to write this comment as well as for your kind words. Thanks again and i hope you enjoy the other videos that are on this channel
Hi Karen, thank you for your kind words. I appreciate that. Thank you for leaving a comment Karen. I hope you enjoy the other tips located in my channel as well. Thanks again Karen.
thanks. note: flake or lead white is relatively transparent. and btw, Gamblin makes a relatively transparent black.. called chromatic black i think. I would make my own black with thalo green and quinacridone rose and that is what is in the chromatic black from Gamblin.
Thanks for your appreciation Adel, There are online classes but also these Still Life & Landscape DVD'S which a lot of artists, young and veteran, purchase which have proven to help them out a lot and took their art to the next level. A link is provided in "annotations" at the end of the videos i have so you could view it from there. Thanks Adel
Thanks. I have never heard this before. In fact, except when I played with watercolours a little while back I have never taken much notice of the issue of transparency with oils.
im ready to start this art degree & im terrified as i don't know the lingo. i can draw n paint quite well only know nothing about lighting so Thankyou i will try these methods
Hola, existen videos en español?. No hablo ingles y me interesan sus consejos .se ve que son formidables para avanzar EN ESTE BELLO ARTE..Gracias por compartir su experiencia y conocimientos
What if you are doing a still life rose using chromatic scale with transparent permanent rose? Lighter shades with yellow at the focal point (yellow advances) but you still need some transparency to see the translucency under the petals?
Yes that would work and I'm sure it would end up being absolutely beautiful. Just remember that everything within the painting is relative to everything else in the painting so as long as you don't have thick heavy paint somewhere else your flower will still advance and look gorgeous. Remember these are just the ways that I do it... it doesn't make it the only way there are many many ways to make beautiful paintings and I'm sure your roses are going to look wonderful. Thanks for your thoughts
Painting for 20 years and something this simple finally makes sense
