I used to paint very detailed paintings. I have just started painting again after a 20 year lapse. Having no formal training I really appreciate your thorough descriptions of what you are doing and why. It has allowed me to look at my old paintings and figure out why some were so good and what was wrong with others. I absolutely love you tutorials. Finding them by accident on You Tube has inspired me to paint again!

Beautiful. I especially appreciate the close ups you provide on your brush strokes which enables the viewer to see exactly how you're holding the brush and the way the bristles are being used. Also the explanation of what colour you're using is very helpful so the view understands exactly what you're doing. This is so helpful for someone like myself who is still learning. Your talent is beyond amazing and your videos are extremely helpful. Thanks so much for sharing.

I respect a person who does not take their God-given talent for granted. It is obvious that you are dedicated to exploring the depth of your talent. You have a spirit of excellence in your work and your teaching. Your generosity will create room for more opportunities to learn, improve and enjoy your craft. I am new to painting, so new, that I haven't even purchased my brushes. Watching you I vacillate between inspiration and "forget it". Fortunately, the choice is mine, and I choose to be inspired. Thank you and God bless you.

I'm learning to paint in a more loose style than you paint, but I always find that your "blocking in" of your paintings are so beautiful that the blocking in generally serves as a really fantastic tutorial, particularly your discussion of color and why you use various colors for mixing. No matter where I go for tutorials, I end up right back here again and again. Thanks, Andrew.

As a talented child I spent three years oil painting under the tutelage of an elderly painting professor who had escaped Europe during WWII where he had taught in St. Petersburg. He was an “academic” painter and I had no idea how fortunate I was to learn from him even if he was still learning English. When I attended a top university art school later, the trends were different and I suffered them sadly because though they were clever, they lacked the craft and shear magic I had experienced earlier. I was made ageless-transported back in time sixty years by this tutorial! We become easily dulled by our digital viewing experiences and an acceptable photocopying style which too often pass themselves off poorly when compared to the many genuine abstractions and interpretations that become artistic sleights of hand in the artwork of deep observers. Even Andrew Wyeth considered himself an abstractionist, but one whose model was nature itself. Thank you!

I tried to paint this with acrylics and I can honestly say I've never worked so hard on one painting. I spent 40 or 50 hours on it, way more than I normally spend on my works. I came away with a great admiration for your talent. I also went to the store afterwards and purchased a starter set of oil paints....I have learned that there are some effects that acrylic can't duplicate effectively. Thanks so much for this lesson; I learned a great deal. Ken in Philippines

When I was studying decades ago, I was fortunate to have several exceptional landscape artists to learn from. But I have to say you taught as much in this short demonstration as I learned in a year of in person classes.
Now my kids are grown I thought to give it another go. But I don't remember a darn thing. And we are in lockdown and my teachers are long gone.
I am thrilled to find you.

Honestly I find these types of videos underrated treasures in the age of digital art. Nowadays if you try to get an understanding of the finer concepts of painting , people in the digital space seem to teach too much in relation to the software. Yes these specific techniques which apply to digital only provide a great time-save and some advantage, but people seem to become lazy in understanding the technique and realizations that came to be these concepts over time. People should understand this sort of state of mind before resorting to these "cheaty" techniques within the digital space , they are applied for a reason. These are mostly time related but I feel understanding these concepts at their core can push people's art to a higher standard.

That was just thrilling to watch. What a wonderful artist you are. As I am Irish, I really thought your mountains in the background were very similar in style to some of Paul Henry's paintings. I am in love with the finished painting (a bit sad to say goodbye to the horses that you had painted so beautifully but I understand from a composition point of view that they had to go 😥). Thank you so much if you ever see this comment after all this time 😀

You can already see a lot of details in the first 'phase'. Reminds me a lot of good ol' Bob Ross's art (may he rest in peace, shall i add)

I loved Bob, but this painting is such an amazing example of degrees of light and dark to create depth...I dont remember Bob ever demonstrating anything as intricate.
      Not that he couldnt,
I dont know. But I think this takes oils to another level.
      W O W!!!

Andrew, I've been a subscriber only for 6 months or so and enjoying past videos. So, I tend not to comment, but I must! Your teaching skills and techniques are captivating. But most of all, after watching this video, I feel like I've spent a relaxing day on a hillside in N.Z. Thank you!

Absolutely topnotch tutorial on application of paints, brushstrokes, tones, mixtures... I could go on and on, but sufficed to say, I love this style of instruction. I’ve learned so much from your videos. You are an amazing teacher. Keep up the fantastic work you do.
