Daniel has so many helpful hints, and as one can see, he does beautiful work. I think he has so much good advice...I would certainly highly recommend him to anyone who wants to improve on his/her painting. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, Daniel! I hope to purchase your videos soon!
Daniel, this is the first video I've seen of yours, and within the first two minutes I already liked you. I had a similar experience in school- I studied design, and I don't have any complaints about those classes but my fine arts classes were very similar to what you described. I've yet to learn my own 'system' I don't paint representational work, mine are all abstracts, but I'm well on my way, and your video here is very inspiring, and its always good to consult someone with experience thanks!
I love this! The part about asking "why," breaking everything down into pieces, and really examining them to understand painting...that's math! You are using a mathematical process to learn painting. Math is everywhere. Most people in my country won't even know what I'm talking about because they never get the chance to do real math in highschool. Math education has been reduced to learning specific problems to pass a standardized exam. Anyways, in conclusion, you are brilliant and inspiring.
@MandalaClare THANKS for your KIND WORDS about my DVDs I highly recommend Daniel's DVD lessons. His style of teaching fits perfectly with my style of learning. And his joy of painting is contagious. I've just finished lesson #5 and already am more authoritative with my brush strokes. My paintings are more 'painterly' AND I am having fun. I've been an artist for over 30 years. My friends and family are 'wowed' at the level this series has elevated me to. Thank you Dan! MandalaClare 1 month ago
I appreciate this video. I have thought in the past that a pro will not use as many brush strokes to do something. I was painting from nature and quit, but finally realised that one must paint from the imagination or a vision. My painting lack many things that I forget, but change according to what I remember.
Great video, thank you sir. One thing I might add as to why instructors don't alway seem to have the right answers: it's because they don't. Like you said, different artist have solved the problem of art in countless ways, so there is indeed no "right" solution. The sense that I get from most instructors is that they project the sense that they know the "right" way, but never divulge enough to show that they actually don't. For that reason, they often come across as closed or guarded.
this is really inspiring and helpful ! I'm a digital matte painter working for film and I teach matte painting masterclasses around the world , and I find this absolutely great tips ! for teachers and students ! I totally agree in everything you say
As I heard ur first few lines, I hit the the subscribe button, coz I smhow alrdy know, tht im gonna learn a lot from u. Nd u also talked abt tht stagnant period in an artists life. Very thnk u, for all the knowledge u shared sir.
So true with what you were saying with art lessons. I have found that I have learn't so much more by watching youtube videos than what I have in art lessons. Art lessons that I have been to are more of a social event than a learning experience. Art teachers I agree don't want to share what they know as they feel threatened that a student may be better then them! I did art at school but that was just a waste of time. Thank you for your videos!
yes that is true Joyce, I have had some amazing teachers and also some not so amazing...but I think most were doing their best to share what their understanding of painting was.
Gelanda Dunbar false my art teacher helps much more sometimes it does feel like he's doing the painting for me but what I see is that if I go to classes with him more repetitively his advice starts to stick more
This advice is great as long as you already paint or want to paint in a style that is similar to Dan's. If you're working in a style that isn't like this, don't fret. I don't think he's speaking to all artists, necessarily. There are many types of art where this advice doesn't quite fit. His heart is in the right place, however.
Great video Daniel! I definitely agree with many of the points that you raise, particularly with regard modern art education with respect to painting. I think another big problem with painters today is that many have surrendered most of their innate creative prowess and become devoted to the exercise of (photo)-hyperrealism. The general public (and even some beginning art students, which I've mentored a few) are lead to superficially believe that "better art" is art that looks exactly like the subject. When people say, "wow, you're work is getting so much better," I politely correct them and say, "what you mean to say is my work is getting more refined." I realize this is genera dependent as well, e.g., how would one provide critique for how "better" a minimalist is getting?
If I have had around twenty painting/art classes in my life, 18 of them were awful and full of sh$%t! I like your points, I would add, "learn to be yourself!" Some people will never do that successfully, but that is far better than lying through your art (by faking it, or trying to paint like other people). You clearly know how color works, and when you do, it's easy to spot people who have no idea about this most basic element. Nice series, Subscribed!
This was a good video and good information. I would have enjoyed spending more time during this video viewing your paintings. Panning, close-ups, and pausing on the painting while explaining some of the techniques would have been great. I am pleased that you have found one of the answers and are doing what you can do to share it with others. Have a good day.
This is so good and helpful. Just like cyborg drackle, as soon as you started talking I hit subscribed. I'm only 16 so hopefully this will help me get better while I'm still learning. Thanks so much!!
Listened to the first 21 seconds of your video. Precisely what I found out about art teachers. In the UK even spent a week at the Royal Drawing School cost a lot and all I was told once a day was what was wrong with my drawing.
Wow sorry I caught this 11 years later . But ! Great ! I’ve thought the same thing after years wondering why the teachers didn’t explain this or that and I guess you’re the first one I’ve ever heard spit this out ! DAM ! Thank you ! Landscape artist painting on off for 24 years!
Thank you for sharing your thoughts keysignify. I appreciate you taking your time to leave a comment here. I understand, thanks for that insight as well. Take care
great. Sir can you tell me what is the role of drawing in painting (art in general)....like making drafts. So can you let us know 'how to cure amaturistic looking draft (sketch/drawing) ...what makes a drawing real high class etc ? thx
EVERY workshop that I tried, I would just go to the first 3 classes. I would just get LOST somewhere.. I want to know about BRUSH strokes! Finally someone understands what I am feeling. I'm going to try this.. but I want to know about the framing too. Could you put that together too in the future?
AWESOME ADVICE!!!! My wife experienced the same info you shared about two and a half years ago. Her name is ESTHER ANNE WILHELM you can google it or see her youtube video's. Her art teacher saved her.
hi, hmm i relate this to applying for passport. i lost passport onc and next time too. Yet second time it was first rejected, too dark photo... Yet i liked photo myself. The rejection was not safe, and caused me suppose to lose 2,000 pages of work over a decade. So when you kept saying too dark, etc. the rules. I don't know why losing an important legal document is very trying. Any thoughts or did i just hear the right thoughts. I know is a different subject yet it rings a bell.
Yeah, I have found what you say to be true .I was a member of an Art class for a few years where the tutor ( who was an exhibiting painter ) never took the trouble to actually demonstrate any processes of painting or even told us about things such as tonal values or colour mixing etc ! I suspected that he was unwilling to share his knowledge with us . I have learnt more from utube and books etc . We need better teachers !
Looking forward to ordering the DVDs (beginner) but also interested to know ifyou would give a referral to the DVD on framing that you mention in this video. Thanks. M

While there are no rules or one correct way, there IS however many things to keep in mind which will help enhance your work. Just trying to paint how you want is tough, most people have no idea what they want or why.
Painting evokes many feelings, esp representational. Lack of gray for instance can give a painting a feeling of being tacky, tonal isolation and high contrast feelings of loneliness. When things contradict each other. Keep nature's methods in mind as well.
Thanks 2chatify! I appreciate that a lot! Check back here for more free oil painting tips soon! Thanks!

Thanks a lot cyborg drackle! I appreciate that! I posted oil painting tips here, i hope each one helps you! Thanks again!
what brushes do you recommend for oil portraits?
Artists can use pretty much what they are used
to using or utilize what is mentioned below. I suggest bristle
filberts. Filberts are kind of like using a flat and a round brush all in
one. One will find they can get a lot of use out of them with out buying
a whole bunch of brushes. To start I suggest numbers 1, 3, 4,
6, 8, 10, and 12. If you are on a budget it's good to at least buy 2, 4,
6(or 8). Good brushes are Silver Grand Prix filberts or a less expensive
version called pro stroke made by creative mark(you can get these at Jerry’s
artarama or ASW supply online) and Royal Sable Langenickel model 5590 # 2, 8,
16, 44 if you can find them(check misterart.com the #2 and the #8 are the most
important and cheapest too)….they recently quit making them…these are a
mongoose hair brush that really holds the paint nicely…a good substitute is a
extra long filbert made by pro stroke made by creative mark as mentioned above.

that is making them and everyone has switched to...
