  • @scottykilmer

    compressor clutches only need positive power to run, and negative ground to ground the clutch so it works. Other wires are sensor wires, you can normally just bypass them. Or, if you don't want to do that, get the correctly made replacement one, you got a cheaply built one, see that a lot with the chinese made ones.

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  12 лет назад +5

    depends on what was wrong originally. Of course replacing all the parts will always work, but that may be wasting money. I'd try the compressor, the drier, and the expansion valve myself.

    Hey Scotty. Thanks so much for your AC videos. My compressor was leaking oil and I did the replacement last weekend all by myself. Since it's an old car, I replaced the receiver drier and all the o-ring seals on the lines to make sure nothing else goes wrong in the near future. I used those 12 oz cans of refrigerant instead of that big tank you have, and a small digital kitchen scale for measurement.

    Great video, Scotty. I just had my ac compressor burn out. There was smoke coming from the engine on the passenger side and through the air vents. Took it to firestone. The original compressor had a lot of charred stuff coming out from the sides and the pulley wouldn't turn. They put in a new one. They did everything you mentioned that needed to be repaired or replaced to make it functional again. A friend suggested a pulley kit to attach to the alternator and crank shaft. Decided to repair it all at once. I would've eventually had to add that ac compressor back, summer is a coming. Took over 4 hours. All good. Cost just under $1000. Drove car, 1996 toyota camry LE with a v6 engine, home. That was about a one hundred mile trip. Worked great. Wish I was closer to home to try to get help from a neighbor to replace it.

    Hey there Scotty! I recently had to replace the AC Compressor and Drier in my '02 Avalanche (It gets a bit hot here in Oklahoma during the summer) and without your videos and advice, I would have been stuck paying some mechanic shop easily triple what it put into the job - and I get to keep the tools for future use! I got the compressor from a place on ebay for about $150, orifice tube, drier, high pressure valve for about $50 online, vacuum pump and gauges at Harbor Freight (some people complain, but I haven't had a tool break from there yet) for $150, and r134 from Autozone for $20. I learned a lot in the process - a buddy of mine does home AC so he recovered the old refrigerant for a case of beer!
    Anyway, just wanted to give you a big THANKS for the advice and instruction. AIRBORNE!!!!

    Hey Scotty! I have a 2012 Scion xB with over 168,000 miles on it. I bought a new A/C Compressor Kit from AutoZone for around $430.00 because my current compressor is blowing hot air and no longer works after getting 2 opinions one from the original dealer that I bought the car from and at a Firestone Complete Auto Care shop. I have already gotten taken to the cleaners once at the Firestone Complete Auto Care near my home. I had the radiator cooling fans replaced for a bill of over $1,200!!! I asked the Firestone place what they would charge for the labor if I bought the AC Compressor Kit from Autozone and if I provide the parts. Firestone said that they would allow me to provide the kit for them to install. They said I have to buy the compressor from them. Firestone would have charged me over $2,000!!! for the parts and labor. I tried to lookup these mobile mechanic websites online to see if they provide reasonable rates if I provided the parts. But they wold have charged me over $1,000 labor even with parts. I called a local independent repair shop not too far away from the same Firestone place that charged me over $1,200 for the new radiator cooling fans and quoted me over $2,000 to replace the ac compressor. I called this place. They called me back and they quoted me an estimate over $1,400 for labor with me providing the parts!!!!!! I am so frustrated because I have already gotten ripped off once with the radiator cooling fans. I do not want to get ripped off now with my ac compressor problem. I am not an auto mechanic and I am not an expert on cars. I just want to know how I can find a good auto mechanic or shop that doesn't overcharge for labor and overhead and everything! I have seen a couple of your videos on how to avoid getting ripped off by certain chains and pop-and-son's auto shops, But I cannot seem to find a mechanic that offers reasonable rates just to install a new ac compressor that I bought new to provide for them. I don't know who I can turn to. Help!!!! Sincerely, Daniel Willis from Homestead, Florida. Thanks Scotty.

    I have to say although I'm in the UK & you're in the USA I'm so glad of your help, you're so quick to answer! God bless, Bill. It's a great site!

    you have to find the exact leak point, use soapy water and it will buggle from the leak area. see if it's the hose, the gasket, or the compressor, could be any

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  11 лет назад

    find if it's radiator coolant or ac refrigerant coolant. Fix whatever is leaking, and if it's coolant, it's obvious as the radiator will be empty when you take the cap off

    you can add oil to a noisy compressor and pray. if a compressor comes with oil, it needs no more. And you can turn the compressor after it's put on the car

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  11 лет назад +2

    small knocks like that are often worn transmission or motor mounts, check that first. As for ac, tons of things can do that, start by checking the refrigerant level and PRAY it's just low on gas.

    either blower motor is wearing out, or kleenxes or stuff are jammed into the intake slowing speed

  • @scottykilmer

    to get a correct hose, they have to be described to the seller. They are all Ac hoses, and you say "the ac hose from the compressor to the condenser" if it's that hose. Or the drier to the evaporator hose. Wherever the hose goes, you describe it.

    Thanks Scotty. I must say you are the most helpful person on RUclips. I have one last question. I'm changing out my compressor in a 2006 Saturn Ion. The Drier is on the Condenser and cannot be removed. Should I replace the Condenser? The manual only talks about replacing the refrigerant filter when changing out a major component.

    @lowlow643 Electrical problems can be cows to fix. Me, I'd just hot wire the compressor, and it that works, I'd do it permanently with a toggle switch and wire from the battery positive to the ac clutch. Scotty

    it may fit, look at the numbers on the compressor, clean off the grease, if they are the same model it would work.

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  13 лет назад

    @RastaMan699 sure, try hot wiring it direct from the battery to see. If so, fix it, or run a toggle switch from the dash to it to run it on manually., Scotty

    there are certain amounts of oil to put in ac compressors, and that information should be obtained before putting a new compressor on. but the process is exactly as I show to change one out > ONLY if the old one blew and threw metal inside the system, you would have to flush it out, change the expansion valve, the drier, and the condenser to make sure it would not break again.

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  13 лет назад

    @Outdatedcrab1 yes, no one really fixes em, as that's just a band aid and the whole thing's breaking down anyway. Scotty

    Thanks for making this easier to understand! My Saturn Vue -03 a/c stopped blowing cold 3 weeks ago. I toughed it out, then mother nature heated things up. Took it to a shop, was told the uv dye shows compressor leaking - they can't add Freon - ozone layer contamination, etc. They say replace compressor - what do u think? My money tree is suffering from heat exhaustion n $800 bucks seems pricey

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  13 лет назад

    @imabichover9000 could be a leaking evaporator hiding back there. YOu can't see it, so have a mechanic use his sniffer machine and a little refrigerant in the system to see if the leak's there. Scotty

    back expansion valve may be bad, opening and closing AC systems can break them in older vehicles

    Scotty,
    2006 Chrysler 300 3.5 RWD.
    Filled coolant last year.
    Now blows hot.
    Added AC Pro and it's now cold again but hear no audible leak although I don't think I filled it to max with refrigerant so the pressure might not be strong enough.
    Any advice on locating-diagnosing leak?
    Thank you in advance.
    Your videos are priceless and you present in a clear and charismatic manner that is greatly appreciated

      johnnymac1975 put UV leak dye into the system and check for the green leaks. OR, buy a 100 dollar sniffing machine that smells out AC leaks, you can get em online easily

    @jhep1985 It's the law in most places, the tank is just the storage tank for the recovery machine. all mechanics have to own them by law if they work on Ac systems. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer

    often a wearing out compressor does that, but check the system for low refrigerant and a loose or worn Ac belt and PRAY it's that.

    Thank you Mr. Kilmer. I appreciate that. In the desert and the ac was just serviced, and now its either blown compressor? Or clutch bearing seized? But no doubt sloppy workmanship, as ac worked great for 22 plus years....Thanks again

    Scotty , hey first off thanks for the videos they are truly helpful.
    My car started blowing hot air while driving to work then a real funky smell started to come through the vents. Like a burnt rubber type of smell. I took it to a mechanic for a visual check and my fan clutch was not kicking on. He told me I need a new compressor. Any input would be helpful. Thanks

    @jessisherriff when the seals go bad on the compressor, it spews out and needs replacing. Scotty

    We just replace the radiator on our 02 Venture. It ran fine for about two days, then when we started it, it said "POOM" and started spewing coolant. We aren't car pros by any means, but are trying to do as much as possible to save money. It's spewing from an area on the lower passenger side of the engine, on what I believe is the compressor? It's a brass piece that looks a bit like a hex bolt with a hole in the top. Maybe an air pressure issue?

    saturns have high priced compressors, just the way it is. But heck, get an add kit at auto zone or somewhere, and add it yourself, each can is like 8 bucks. you must evacuate the system first, then fill it up with a factory load of refrigerant.Start there, but it it won't take refrigerant . try hot wiring the compressor clutch with power from the battery to get it start sucking

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  12 лет назад

    simple job, no video yet though. You loosen the bolts on the adjuster and swing it down to get the belt off. Most have an adjuster with a screw assembly that loosens and tightens the belt

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  11 лет назад

    often a restriction in the system will do that. Hook up AC gauges to low and high side, e mail me the readings

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  11 лет назад

    stopping and going is often just being low in refrigerant. Check that first.

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  11 лет назад

    hondas have pretty weak compressors that often just go bad. Pray it's just that and not something else like a bad condenser

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  12 лет назад

    @Tynlinz if it runs fine and cools fine, why not just run a toggle switch from the battery to the compressor with a 20 amps inline fuse? makes it easier than finding shorts.

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  12 лет назад

    could mean lots of things, but check the refrigerant level first and pray it's just that.
