  • John Suhr and Pete Thorn Join us for Part 2 of our great discussion. This show we take viewer questions.
    This video has been re-uploaded with a small section removed. In the original video we made a statement indicating that we thought Marshall no longer makes gear in the UK. We have since learned from Marshall that this is simply not the case, hence the edit. Our apologies to Marshall.

    I think the internet and social media has been a net negative for the most part, but boy shows like this sure make me happy for it. To have a John Suhr and Dave Friedman "riffing" for hours is heaven for the electric guitar community

    Great episode! I watched all of pt1 and pt2. For me, it was really interesting to see and hear what John Suhr had to say. I really love his products and own quite a few (Modern, Guthrie Govan all mahogany, 80's Shred Tiger, Mary Kay Strat, SL-67, Jim Kelly w/cab). I am proud to own these awesome instruments and amps! I almost bought an early PT100 head, but (sorry Pete :). I have been a long time fan of you and your music!. And I am also a huge fan of Dave. I have an early BE100 non-offset, Dirty Shirley, SmallBox, Pink Taco, BE100 2018, cabs, 2xASM12's and my new pride and joy: a Friedman Transparent Blue Berry NoHo 24 ! I have met Dave and he is a real person and down to Earth..I equally love and respect the great products you guys are making available to those of us who love great tone. And Marc - thank you for Tone Talk. So cool to get into the minds of some of the best musicians and gear legends in our time.

    HI Marc, Dave, John & Pete. Your discussion at 1 hr in, on 'modelling' software was fascinating. I have played for many years with Tommy Emmanuel and Colin Hay (Men At Work), and am a real amp guy through and through. However, back in 2019 I was asked to headline the Melbourne Guitar Show to play all of the Van Halen 1 album in track order, and I of COURSE wanted to use my trusty old Plexi cranked up. Alas, those Expo shows being what they are, there was not going to be a soundcheck and there were 4 other bands on that day. So I elected to use the Kemper with some profiles that were very well made of a dimed Plexi. Anyway.. it definitely got me out of a jam, and the resulting video (on my channel) was better than I thought it would be. Let me know what you think? BUT - you're right however.. there is '3rd dimension' missing. And I know what it is like to stand in front of a dimed Plexi, and it's intimidating and wonderful at the same time lol. If it's a choice, I'll always go tube amp. And I have fond memories of meeting John at his factory with Colin Hay.. him walking away with an amp, and me some pedals 🤘 Respect from Down Under gents.. love your show. Simon

    Standby switches - they are a hangover from the days of directly-heated thoriated tungsten cathodes, as used in the 20's & early 30's. Thoriated tungsten filaments don't react well to rapid power cycling. They were fine if you allowed them to cool down fully (1 hour+), but if you turned them off for a few minutes, then turned them on again (while still hot) there was something like a 1-in-5 chance of a complete tube failure, with the potential for the failure to happen in such a way to give a direct short between cathode & plate, taking both power and output transformers with the tube. This problem was solved by the introduction of the indirectly-heated tube and improved materials technology in the early 30's.
    AFAIK, there are & have never been any production guitar amps made with thoriated tungsten directly-heated cathodes. Put simply, unless you're using an amp with 300b, 211, 805 or 845 valves, a standby switch is pretty much useless, just adding cost to an amp...
    Cheers... G

    This talk about amps and pedals and modellers is fun from my own perspective. I've never thought the modellers sound "real" but I had the chance to be in a band and buy a 100 W tube amp before the modellers were good enough, pod was a thing but nobody played direct in through modeller yet. I've tried to believe people and online discussions and A/B blind tests that they're just as good as real things. And they can often trick you in those recordings. Yet funnily enough I don't use a modeller instead of tube amps at home. I think something like neural dsp plugin is great for getting recordable sounds quietly at home, and very malleable, but if I'm serious about it, I still go for the real amps.
    And it's absolutely true about the tweakery, I hate digital interfaces with passion. Very off putting. I have grabbed a pile of pedals to explore sounds, but when I play at home to practice or learn something, I play unplugged. Despite all the gear. Just because in that moment I just need a guitar to play, the gear is not necessary.
    Sounds like John Suhr was trying to pronounce Juha Ruokangas, a finnish builder (every builder in Finland is super small, but he's really well known in Finland, the best known). He made some guitars for a great player, Juha Torvinen.

    My #1 player is a LesPaul model with 1 cut access body shape, Bridge stop bar T-O-M style. Head
    stock is 3x3 style. And a 3 way selector switch on top like a LP. I love that style. But it has 3 knobs,2 Volume one tone. 24 frets! Body is basswood, Rosewood fret board. Maple neck. Anyone guess what it is? Its an ESP LTD cheap model, EC-100 QM color. I did a pup swap, added a kill switch in the control cavity. Upgrade tuners. And a bone nut that I cut to my specs. My next guitar will be like this one in most ways except I do want mahogany, Maple cap, Mahogany neck, Rosewood fret board. But thinner. Guess what that guitar will be? It will have to be a PRS. Its the only one I found that has what I want most from the factory. Why I do not have it yet? Three things, #1 Price #2 Price #3 The Fucking Price! Scoping out the SE models. The upscale of that is just stupid. Them guitars are for people that have other people buy it for them.

    I asked the question about Poly vs Nitro finishes. I think Mr Suhr was a little disingenuous about that. Of course "a finish doesn't have a tone", but there's a reason Nitro finishes are prized over Polyester ones. And why the cheaper Suhr guitars are Poly while the more expensive are Nitro. It's about the thickness of the finish, and Nitro finishes are usually a lot thinner than Polyester. The thinner the lacquer, the easier the guitar vibrates. John might have found some Nitro examples with thicker finishes than he puts on his Poly Classic Pros, but that would be the exception. I think he was making a case for his Pro guitars (or whatever they're called now). Plus Nitro looks and ages way better.

    • @InGrindWeCrust2010
      @InGrindWeCrust2010 4 года назад

      In Part 1, they all- or at least Thorn and Friedman- agreed that which type of finish, or lack thereof, affects tone, as does thickness of a neck, etc. I thought nitrocellulose also flexes and...breathes? in a way poly doesn't. In Suhr's defense, there are several bass luthiers who have begun to mix a touch of poly in with their oil and wax finishes, super minimally, for consistency and durability. Maybe Suhr's player series have a very thin poly finish?

    Personally, I think the Modeler vs Tube debate..comes down to generations. This generation of guitarist is use to a recorded guitar( already processed) sound.
    There's freedom( touring) knowing your sound is consistent night in and night out.. I'm 58 and I love my Fractal.. I have great tube amps, But, I play R&B, Jazz and Comptemory Gospel.. And, I get the Paul Jackson, Landau Nile Rodgers Cleanfunky, but not brittle sound..And, the in-between tones as well.. I'm going forward.

I think I can speak for the majority of people that have guitar fetish but not a fund base for it that supersedes your bills. If I saved a couple thousand dollars for a guitar, Which I am dreaming, And a bill needed payed or something needed fixed, Guess what? I could not buy that guitar without feeling very bad about it. It could be 800.00 or 600.00. Same thing.

    Honestly, I don't think the editing and reupload of the stream is a good idea. Even if anyone in the show says something completely wrong, uninformed or biased in any way, it's not a reason to edit... because that's an open door later to always edit any future show if one manufacturer just doesn't like what is being said... and in a long run, it will neutralise the "raw" nature of the show that actually makes it good right now. Of course, there's probably unpopular opinions said by anyone, but it's OK, it's part of being different people with different taste, habits, preferences, styles, etc... For instance, I don't agree with what Marc or Dave already said in some previous videos about the whole Kemper thing... but I fully understand your position and even if I don't share it, I still like very much the show. It's just called: having different opinion... that's it. And yes, different opinions is different from misleading with false information, or if we ignore some facts at the time, etc... true, but it's a slippery slope. A simple follow-up in the next show mentioning: "Hey guys, we were wrong last time, it happens that Marshall still make gear in the UK"... done! Or just add a "pinned comment" on the original video. Because it's important to correct facts and not mislead people, so yeah, no problem with that... I just think the whole 'let's edit and reupload' it might be an open door to then analyse every single word that might be said later and then being cut out to not "offense" anyone because it's an unpopular comment or opinion. My 2 cents...

    • @Spidouz
      @Spidouz 6 лет назад +2

      PS: And on my own words: Screw Marshall's feelings. At this point they deserve it since it seems like every single manufacturers on earth now know how to make a great Marshall amps... beside Marshall themselves! There's a reason why we have Friedman, Metropoulous, 65Amps, Victory, Blackstar, Fx Amps, Fargen, Suhr, you name it... so many Marshall alternative brands that would probably not even exist if Marshall wouldn't be messed up today!

      I do believe, unless the vid is hurtful or violates a law, it should be left alone. Editing the description at the top, saying what error was made, certainly would have sufficed. Pointing out Marshall makes amps in jolly ol' England still, in the description, is more publicity than they deserve for such a simple error...buried deep in 4+ hours of good info...which won't be seen by near as many people as the description...IMHO. Talking or typing opens up the opportunity to be human and make a mistake. We used to say "oops", not delete the history of the event. Just saying...

    A 24 fret guitar should be the norm if you ask me. Playing one for a while and when you play a 22 fret or a 20 fret, Its like playing a toy! The expansion you learn on a 24 is huge! Anything less actually stunts your ability. A lot gets chopped off when you are looking down field at the lay out of the land. And I do not know much so someone with a large musical vocabulary will feel it twice as much. So yeah, 24 fret should be the norm. I will say that people who play only a 22 fret, Older and set in their ways so to say, Which is not what a musician should be, But their are a lot of people like this. If they forced themselves to play a 24 for a month, They will never look back! They will get irritated at first jumping to a fret that isn't right because they have moved right? It doesn't take long at all to get on with it. But their out of their comfort area and have to think which is a good thing but are used to not thinking about the things that come with learning. Just try it for a month. You get passed the easiness of knowing what you know. Just try laughing at yourself. And before you know it, Playing a 22 is not as fun! Another thing for set in your ways people is to play with drop D if you haven't. Or not very much. Same thing. Leave your guitar tuned to drop D for a month. You will discover a lot more with it than just the one or two songs that require it. Now think about drop D with 2 extra frets! The turnings you can experiment with. These two things alone will intrigue you for a long time. Light a fire under your ass! You will bug the shit out of your wife saying listen to this honey! Check this out! I have a song I want you to hear! Lol.
