Attacks at the Nest! - Hanover, PA Bald Eagles Nest - March 19, 2018

- It has been one truly frightening day at the Bald Eagles nest in Hanover, PA today. I was fortunate to capture two of the attacks. It appears to be Freedom (male) fending off the attacks in this clip. The intruder/attacker is another adult Bald eagle. It is unknown exactly why this occurred; it would only be conjecture at this point. Fortunately the eggs appear undamaged.

This reminds me of the attacks on the SUMRR Trio nest last year! The Mom at SUMRR was actually fatally injured so she never returned to the nest. There were two Dads to protect the nest after the fatal attack. Two of the three eggs had already hatched. The remaining egg never hatched. The attacks continued for what seemed like forever- at least a month. The Dads were able to take turns hunting, feeding and protecting as well as standing together against attackers - the eaglets were raised by the two Dads and survived to fledge. This situation is so sad to watch. TY for sharing.

Something similar happened a number of years ago at a Catalina nest. Both babies were about to fledge when they were attacked by an adult. First one then the other were knocked out of the nest. I thought I was going to have a heart attack. I and others watching the nest were able to get in touch with the wildlife society overseeing the nests. Both babies were rescued by rather daring, caring people who climbed the cliffs to get them. Both had to be brought to the mainland for medical attention, but survived and were eventually returned to the wild. The cries of the mother when she returned to her empty nest were really tear-jerking. All eagles involved were rescues who had been returned to the wild. It was felt that it was a territorial fight. The offending male was re-captured and sadly is living out the rest of his days in captivity to protect the wild breeders and their young.
Damn. Those eggs came SO close to being smashed in the last attack. This poor family - geez. Thank you for the video - I'd heard about it in our online cam viewing community while at another nest... Man, I hope his wife is okay and will come home very soon.

When you have to fight for your freedom
To the concerned viewers of this nest I can only add the latest information that I have been able to gather. The attacking eagle is most likely a female wanting her own mate and nest. Close up pictures appear to show an adult, but a very young adult. The tip of her beak is black leading to the speculation that she is a young adult. Liberty (female) is an older adult - still in her prime but quite a bit older than this attacking female. Since Liberty has not been spotted for nearly four days it is possible that she was injured or worse and cannot return to the nest. Like many others, I have watched this nest since the cameras were installed by HDonTap in 2015. I have seen them go through many difficulties...terrible storms, both rain and snow; the death of a baby; non-viability of an egg; other intruders; tormenting squirrels and raccoons; and, of course, this year saw the near complete collapse of the nest. But these two, Liberty and Freedom, persisted and raised their young to fledge as strong healthy juveniles. But keep in mind, this nest is only one of millions that experience the same tragedies, as well as joys. What Liberty and Freedom have experienced so have millions of others. It has only strengthened my view through the years that nature and its' children are a beautiful miracle that is truly awesome. Thank you for allowing me to voice my opinion. IMPORTANT ADDENDUM AS OF APRIL 8, 2018 - The missing female "Liberty" has been located and she is ALIVE and WELL! She has been seen in the company of her mate "Freedom". Unfortunately there will presumably not be any further eggs produced this season by this beautiful pair, there is always next year! Bless you Miss Liberty!

The nest that I use to watch, the tree fell in bad weather, this happened a lot and the last time it happened the intruder destroyed the eggs!! Broke my heart. It's nature but makes you sad!

Me too Gordon. I can only add that these two attacks occurred over a four hour period, mid-day, on Monday, March 19. Hope that helps somewhat.

As of this date, April 3, the female has not returned. 😞
Usually when they call out the alarm like that their mate shows up. Surprised it didn't . First time here so don't know names of both the eagles.
At the time of the attack the mate (female) was missing and presumed injured or even dead. Fortunately about two weeks later she returned and fended off any further attacks. Thanks for watching Tamara.

Why would an eagle attack another eagle?
Mostly in territorial disputes or, as in this case, a younger female eagle wants to take over a nest and mate with the male. Unfortunately bald eagles are now becoming so abundant that disputes are now becoming more commonplace.

Here's my theory Sara...this intruder is a female and Liberty (female) is out gunning for her. Some people say that females chase off females, etc. So perhaps she's out there. I hope she's OK.

With all due respect, this is Freedom on the nest. He successfully fended off the attacks. Unfortunately, his female mate, Liberty, has not returned to the nest for three days. He is trying to go it alone but will unable to do so without his mate. 😟

I think someone should have called USFW or AEF and rescued the eggs. One parent cannot incubate the eggs and still
Feed himself.

Maybe you should ask them why they attacked this nest. Must be some sort of valid reason. Could be he's the local tax bird. Freedom clearly is a Republican and is trying to dodge his tax bill because his chicks will enroll in a Christian charter school and they will get tax-dodging vouchers.
