Best entertainer I ever saw. He could have an audience laughing then weeping if he wanted to. As good as his solo act was, tho, when he played with John Prine it was just pure magic. If there’s a heaven, Stevie was there to open the gates for John...with a couple of guitars.

Any youtube with him and John Prine? Two of the most underrated folk/country singers ever. I'd appreciate a link if there is one. But preface it with "hello in there" at my age.

I don't think Steve ever sang this song quite the same way -- ever. That's just another reason we loved him so much. I never saw anyone who enjoyed performing as much as Steve Goodman, and I've seen A LOT of live music. I still miss him, and always will.

So, I was in a folk group with two other guys, we were pretty dreadful but Bob got us an (unpaid) gig in the basement of a pizza place on Dempster. It was dreadful, too (When you finished your free peanuts you just dropped the shells on the floor. Made walking noisy.).
While we were waiting to come on, our instruments in the back, everyone was told, “Hey! Steve’s here!” and he came out playing my new Goya 12-string.
He’d just dropped by, ‘didn’t have an instrument, ‘was told told there was one available, picked mine.
I was blown away. It never sounded so good. Ever.

I have been thinking of Steve a lot in the last few days in the wake of John Prine's death. Loved both of those guys and their music. I was reading a tribute to Prine by someone who recounted having dinner with him in his home last fall. At some point they were playing the jukebox and it started smoking. I suddenly thought OMG is that the same jukebox Steve Goodman gave him all those years ago? Bet it was. I love all the various versions of this song and all the variations on the story of how it came to be.

You Never Even Call Me By My Name - Steve Goodman
    Lyrics:
It was all that I could do to keep from crying
Sometimes it seems so useless to remain
You’re the one who always tried to change me
And that is why I will always stay the same
    Chorus:
But I’ll hang around as long as you will let me
I never minded standing in the rain
You don’t have to call me darlin’, Darlin’
But you never even call me by my name
You don’t have to call me Waylon Jennings
And you don’t have to call me Charley Pride
And you don’t have to call me Merle Haggard anymore
Even though you know you’re on my fightin’ side
    Chorus
I’ve seen my name a few times in the phone book
And on the neon sign above the bar I used to own
And there’s only one thing that I’m really sure of
I’m going to hear it when my savior calls me home
    Chorus
That’s where the song ends. But when David Allan Coe recorded this song, he demanded another verse with trucks, Mother, prison, trains and getting drunk.
And Steve Goodman wrote down a few verses with some replacing getting drunk with farms. So here’s the verse he uses for this video.
    (Secret Last Verse)
Ever since the day my Mama went to prison
Ain’t nothing ‘round this farm has been the same
And you know that when they let her out last Tuesday
Then she drove her goddamn truck into a train
    Chorus
Title: You Never Even Call Me By My Name
    Artist: Steve Goodman
    Songwriter: Steve Goodman, John Prine

Does Country Music realize that Mr. Goodman was making fun of them? Really? Not even after all this time? Certainly not the individual artists. The names are clearly homage. But, the industry? I imagine they think we're laughing with them. Is there a country song today without beer, brand named whiskey or blatant and coarse sexual references? Could somebody please show me. I used to love Country Music. I miss you, Steve.
