I am brand new to sewing and I have to say,you are seriously one of the best teachers I have seen. And I have seen alot this month lol. Thank you so much, what a wonderful time we live in. I am 67 and I tried learning sewing years ago more than once and always gave up. With the Internet I am enjoying every moment, even all the picking❤
Thank you, Miss Phoebe! I couldn’t sleep last night, so naturally, I planned future quilts! The decorative stitch on the binding seemed possible…and now I know it is!
Love this video. Just last night I tore my border by trying to rip out unevenly sewn binding. So now I have to figure out how to fix this. Grrr! Thanks for invaluable info.
Excellent tutorial, you explain in detail which is very helpful. I’m a beginning quilter, your teaching is precise and very well done. Thank you. Keep on teaching. You have a gift and very pleasant to listen to.
Excellent tutorial. I’m using this technique on a quilt I’m finishing now for a special Christian Sister. Thank you for the in-depth teaching. I can tell you are in your teaching zone. ❤
Great tips. I know a lot of gals that just hate doing the binding but I love it. I usually do stitch in the ditch for binding because I really want to do a great job of catching that loose side of the binding on the back but also like the option of using my decorative stitches on my machine. I don't free motion quilt but have also used the fancy stitches for quilting. Love the giant clip for keeping the quilt out of my way for joining the binding. That's the worst part is fighting with the quilt.
This is a great tutorial for me a new quilter! We should utilize the decorative stitches just like you did. Do you ever trim back the corners in binding them?
Absolutely. On the wrap around (last) step, if a corner looks like it will just too bulky to be covered, I'll start by trimming out a little of the batting. Usually that does it, but sometimes it helps to trim off just a little of the folded inside corner of the binding. Just be careful because you want the binding to be "full," and you don't want a hole to show up later. Good luck, and thank you for watching!
Glad to see that I sew my joining ends the same as you. Always like learning new and easier ways to do that. I have twisted the binding as well so the test is no needed!
This is awesome I’m not kidding this is great! Your technique is how I will finish all my future quilts. Doing it the way I was sometimes I would pull the binding over too far and then I had to go back and hand stitch all those yet doing the decorative stitch like you did will catch all of that and I won’t have to go back and do any handstitching, yahoo! thank you so much for this tutorial, I really did learn a lot ❤️
I appreciate the detail! It looks like I need to get out the multi-stitch machine. I prefer doing almost everything on the straight stitch only but this is a great idea
This is brilliant. You’ve just advanced my binding skills by light years! Can’t wait to use decorative stitches on my quilt. I have a Christmas table runner that will love this.
I cut my final join a wee bit short (fat 1/8th"), so it is taught but not tight. I also miter my join first to make it easier to sew. Creative Grids folded corner ruler is my go-to tool for making binding. A stylus is another useful tools for maneuvering tight corners.
Hi Amy! I've had that fabric for several years because I was too chicken to do the French Roses pattern, but here's what I see on the selvedge: yellow is Fairy dust and Flowers, pink is Romantica, both from In the Beginning; peach is Skywriting, and blue is Seaweed, both by P&B. I hope you can find some of what you're looking for!
I did. I made it in my video on raw edge applique and washed it to get the fluff. Washing before binding helps the binding to not bunch up the first time the batting gets washed.
Yes. For this stitch I normally backstitch a few. It's looks complicated enough that a few little overlaps don't show. If I'm close enough to the inside edge of the stitching, I just switch over to straight stitch and do a little back and forth.
@@QuiltedPigPhoebe Thank you I have cut my binding 2.5in which has been cut for a week as I am working on a quilt for myself so lucky I cut it at that 😅
I'm glad it will work out! Two and a quarter is enough for this idea, but 2.5 gives you a little wiggle room. Have fun and keep quilting. Thanks for commenting!
@@QuiltedPigPhoebe l haven't done a quilt for a few years because of health so had forgotten the size, I have just squared up the quilt top so next is borders plus get the backing & wadding done I have a large throat Sewing machine which needs to go in for service & sort out but can put the borders on with my standard Sewing machine I still have health issues but decided not to let it stop me plus I do have to try to get it done before I go in for a hip replacement, thank you for your reply

What a nice presentation of a new to me way to bind. Love this!
You make it easy to follow, every one else goes to fast, thank you .🎉 I understand a lot better now.
Thank you, Linda! I appreciate your thoughtful words and am glad I could help. ❤
I've been quilting for several years and I still learned from this tutorial. You're a great teacher.
I have the most trouble having the back look as good as the front. Catching the binding in the back. Like your technique.
Thank you! I'm glad to help because that's always been a struggle for me too. Happy sewing to you!

Yay! It makes me happy to know I have helped.
This is great. The corner tip really helps

I'm glad you liked it! Maybe trim half an inch or so all around the border to get past the tear?
New to your channel and picked up quilting again…thank you, I really enjoyed everything and the reminder to use all these beautiful stitches.
Beat binding video I’ve watched! Very informative and you took time to show!

Extremely clear with great videoing! This is a must for every beginner! Happy I stumbled across it.
You are such a great teacher thank you so much. I love the way you tell us why you do things it makes learning better. Sue
Thanks for a great video🙏😍
Thank you!
great video I loved it
I wish I had that swirl stitch on my old Bernina. I do have the leaf stitch you are using. I like your multi colored binding. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for watching. I do like that swirl and use it a lot on smaller quilts. It really compliments over-all swirl quilting.
@Amy White It's a 1630. I'm not sure when they came out, but mine says Update '96 on it.
@Amy White - if you are asking me I have the Bernina 153 it’s over 25 years old.
Excellent tutorial on binding and I've watched a lot.
Thank you for saying so!

Great tutorial. Love the fabric . Where can I get this fabric?
Hi Amy! Nifty!
Rotate to 45' then continue to sew to the corner, this has been the missing link! Thank you...
It was a game changer for me! No more catching the corner when you turn, and it makes the corner a little flatter for the wrap-around step.
Thanks for sharing
Very cute idea. Out of curiosity, did you wash that quilt before binding it?
I did. I made it in my video on raw edge applique and washed it to get the fluff. Washing before binding helps the binding to not bunch up the first time the batting gets washed.
Thanks for all the specific details! Do you need to backstitch or knot the thread when you get to the very end?
Yes. For this stitch I normally backstitch a few. It's looks complicated enough that a few little overlaps don't show. If I'm close enough to the inside edge of the stitching, I just switch over to straight stitch and do a little back and forth.
@@QuiltedPigPhoebe Thanks for the clarification. I love this stitch but had not thought of using it for a binding.
So when you use these decorative stitches are you always stitching off the binding or does it depend on the stitch you pick?
I would say it depends on the stitch. I kind of want it to hit the middle so the most coverage from the stitch runs close to that loose edge.
@@QuiltedPigPhoebe thanks I appreciate your answer and definitely loved this technique. I learned a lot.
What width do you cut the fabric for the binding
Hi good morning! It started as two and a half inches.
@@QuiltedPigPhoebe Thank you I have cut my binding 2.5in which has been cut for a week as I am working on a quilt for myself so lucky I cut it at that 😅

Great ideas. However, lighting made it difficult to see detail. Maybe it’s my older eyes! 😮
Can you put the make and model of the machine your using in the description? And notify me when you do. Thank you in advance.
Hi SoCal Gal! My machine is a Bernina 1630 with the '96 update. I don't know what the update gave, but all the stitches shown came from that machine.
Your machine sounds like you haven’t oiled it in far too long.
Probably true. Someone else mentioned that it's loud. I just thought it was because the bobbin door was open when I was recording this. Oops!

Enjoyed your teaching but lighting needs to be better
