Machine Binding Tutorial

- In this video, I share with you my technique for machine binding a quilt. I've tried many different techniques for machine binding and this is the method I have been using for several years.
The quilt I am binding in the video is made using 2 yards of the red panel I designed for my Beautiful Day fabric line. These fabrics are in quilt shops that carry Moda fabrics both online and brick & mortar.
Rebecca Silbaugh of Ruby Blue Quilting did the beautiful custom quilting on this quilt. You can find more information about her quilting here: rubybluequilts.blogspot.com/ or on Facebook: / rubybluequilts
Diagonal Seam Tape is designed by Cluck, Cluck, Sew. You can purchase it from her shop here: cluckclucksewshop.com/product... or from your favorite quilt shop.
This is the newer model of my iron: amzn.to/3qEH0dt The one I use doesn't have the retractable cord.
Since the release of this video, Nicole, the creator of the Binding Boards has signed a contract with Riley Blake allowing them to manufacture the boards. They have just started shipping to quilt shops January of 2023. Fat Quarter Shop is an online shop that has them for sale: shrsl.com/3wsfr
I use a Juki TL-2010Q for almost all of my sewing. I also have a Bernina that I use for applique. This is the Juki I use: amzn.to/3us1gAo
I referenced two different sewing machine feet in this video:
Hinged Presser Foot (I used this for sewing the binding strips together as well as top-stitching the binding down in the final step): amzn.to/3uucaFI
1/4" Presser Foot with guide (I used this when sewing the binding to the back of the quilt): amzn.to/3DcfclT
I use these same two feet for all of my piecing. I use the Hinged Presser foot when I am making flying geese, HST's, Flip/Stitch units etc. I use the 1/4" foot for sewing together my blocks & block pieces.
The thread I use almost all of the time is Aurifil 50 weight thread in the color 2021.

For everyone that likes the 'binding board,' this is a very easy (and cheap) way to make your own. All you need to do is place two long pins parallel to each other on your ironing surface an inch or two wider than your iron (stop the video and look at her board). Make sure your pins are heat resistant and that the middle section of the pin is wide enough for your binding to fit under when folded in half. Then you can slide the binding in just as shown in the video and voila, you have a 'binding board." I prefer to use that $40 for fabric instead of buying one more quilting tool. You can see hers is getting burned too from having her iron always in the same place. This way, you can move it from spot to spot and have your ironing board cover last much longer.
This is how I learned like over 20 years ago.

This is the best binding tutorial, for me, that I have ever seen! Binding has always been scary 👻🤡 but your video was easy to follow! Thank you!
@@valhinkel9516 I'm so glad it was helpful for you!
Thank you so much for your binding tutorial. This is the best one I've ever seen.
I hope you make more instructional videos. You're a great teacher!
Thank you so much!..I plan to!
I'm brand new to quilting and watching tutorials and trying to absorb as much as possible. You were a great teacher. Easy to understand and follow. Thank you so much!
You are so welcome!...thank you!
Literally found you via cats while I was folding laundry and they decided to play with my phone. My cats seem to know how to bring more joy and sewing into my life 😂.
That is hilarious!...I have my fair share of funny kitties in the sewing room. =) They sure bring a lot of laughter into our lives!
Oh, that's so so great
I followed your instructions for sewing the ends together, and i am thrilled to report: WHOOPEE!!!!! FINALLY, I WAS ABLE TO DO THIS!!!! AT 80 years old, I have tried a few methods over the past three years, but this one worked for me. Thanks, Corey!! PAT BERNE
Woohoo!...isn't it fantastic when it all works out nicely. I love having a technique that works well for me. =)
80 years YOUNG
Thank you. This was such a helpful binding tutorial. I don't like hand sewing my binding and this is the best machine binding video I've watched. ❤🤍
Glad it was helpful!
I fight with my binding every time. Watched your tutorial and will refer to it for all my future binding. You made it look so easy. I can see where I make mistakes. ❤
I hope it's helpful for you! Binding can sometimes be a little bit unruly for us. =)
Beautiful! You are so skilled.
When I join my binding diagonally, I move the top strip to the left and up just a bit so I can see the intersections where it overlaps the bottom strip. Then I can guide the bottom intersection along the red line of the diagonal tape.
Yes!..you can absolutely do it this way. 😃
I do that too.
I do too.
good tip!
Me too
Thank you for this tutorial … it was so informative! Your fabric and quilts are gorgeous! I’m waiting for my fat quarter bundle and panel of beautiful day fabric to arrive… thank you again. And the binding board is a great idea!!
I love my binding board--it makes pressing those strips fun!
Thank you! This is “sew” (hehe) helpful! I’m a beginning quilter and your instructions are easy to follow and the results look fabulous!
You’re so welcome!
Love, love, love this video Corey!! I know it’s been awhile since you made this but this is the best tutorial out there. Who would have thought to make it easier for someone to let them know you join the ends like when you make your binding the same way! I am so grateful for your tutorials. You have such a gift of teaching others❤❤❤ I just made my first big quilt with your “Sunwashed” fabrics and made the “Bountiful” quilt on FQS and had it long armed and it’s beautiful!! I gain more confidence each time I go through the process and it is so wonderful that there are quilter’s who help us all. Thank you! God Bless!
Thank you so much!...I'm so glad you found it helpful. And I'm so glad you like the Bountiful quilt---I had so much fun designing that quilt and it's been a treat to see so many people making that quilt. =)
I am going to try the 2” binding and love the beautiful day quilt❤️Thank you!
You're so welcome!
The best binding tutorial Ive seen yet! I love the ironing tip and wish Id seen this before binding 3 lap quilts yesterday lol. The quilt is stunning!
Thank you so much!...I loved designing this panel for my Beautiful Day fabric line!
Paige handmade is better
Cori, thank you for an awesome tutorial! I have not tried a 2 inch binding before but I will defiantly do so soon! I agree with what you mentioned regarding the wiggle room with a 2 1/2 inch binding …so it’s nice to know that the 2 inch binding works better as far as fitting nicely around the edge. I hope you got your other quilts binded. They are beautiful! You mentioned in the description that you use the hinged foot for HST and flying geese etc… I would love to see a tutorial on that too! 😊
You are so welcome! The 2” binding is wonderful for keeping things today!..give it a whirl and see what you think. 😃
In my video on Diagonal Seam tape earlier this week, I showed how I make my flying geese as well as HST’s. 😃
Thank you! I LOVE your fabric & your patterns. Great binding tutorial.
Thank you so much!
Love your book “Oh Happy Day”. I am taking a class for Twinkle and Shine” and the turtle quilt is adorable. It will be one of the next ones I do. Thank you for such a great book.
Thank you so much Suzann! Twinkle and Shine is such a great one to be working on right now...just in time for Christmas!
Great tutorial, Corey! I feel less anxiety about trying machine binding now. Thank you for this! Your fabrics and quilts are so beautiful! Hope that you can get caught up on your binding tasks; would love to see how the other quilts look when finished!
I'm so glad!--try it out on small projects first...they are easier to maneuver and you can get the hang of it a little bit better.
Thank you for a great lesson. Love how you make everything look so neat and perfect.
You are so welcome!
Perfect and easy. I love to sew. And especially bind. Just so satisfying to see a job well done. Please show your finished projects. Procrastinating is hard on your body and mind. ❤️🙏🏻
I’m loving all of your new videos! Your fabric lines are so colorful and beautiful! Thank you!
Thank you so much!!
Love your teaching style! Thanks for all these tips, learned a lot!
I'm so glad!...thank you!
Fantastic tutorial Corey! Thank you so much. Your descriptions and tips were spot on. I love the suggestion of cutting the strips 2” as I have also had issues with not liking what the back looks like when machine binding other widths. I am now actually “eager” to bind several projects languishing in my sewing room! 😂❤️👍🏻
Oh good!…I hope that narrower width is just the trick!
You're a great teacher. I just found your RUclips channel and plan to watch more of your tutorials. You're a natural!
I really appreciate that Kelly!...thank you! I'm so glad you came across my channel!
Thank you so much for this tutorial!!! You are so patient & explain everything so well💕
You're so welcome!
The quilts and fabric are beautiful!!! Thank you for the video, it’s very helpful!
Thank you!--you are so welcome!
I have never ironed my binding once attached on the one side. I can see it makes such a difference. Thanks for sharing all your tips.
You are so welcome! I was surprised how much pressing the binding before stitching it down makes!…it keeps everything so tidy and smooth.
You do all the important steps. So fun to see someone do all the things!! you are the best 😍 ( so important to eliminate bulk)
I've tried a lot of different methods for binding and this one has worked for me the longest. I always get great results if I do it this way!
This is the best binding tutorial out there! Thank you for taking the time to post this helpful tutorial!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much! You make it look so easy. I have always hand sewed the binding on and general enjoy doing so, however, you make this look sew easy I am going to try. This will definitely be a video I will revisit. And your quilts are amazing, I like the grey! Thanks Corey!!!
You’re welcome!…I don’t mind machine binding either, it’s the time involved that pushed me to find a machine binding technique that I liked. Thank you so much for your kind comments about my quilts!
I love this tutorial. Very easy to follow. I have a Christmas 🎄 show coming up and I am doing a lot of Christmas panels.
Panels are such a fun way to make a quilt quickly!
Thanks for this video Corey. I do some of the same techniques. I am going to try the 2" binding strips. I have been using 2 1/4" but this looks much better and will line up better. It boosts my confidence when I see someone else doing some of the same techniques and it turns out great.
You're so welcome!...I think it's great to try different things until you get the process just right for you. =)
Thank you for a fantastic tutorial! I am going to practice this technique. And I am going to buy some of that beautiful red floral for the back of my current quilt.
You are so welcome!…that red floral is available in both 42” and 108” wide making it perfect for backing.
Thanks very much for this tutorial , I still consider myself a newer quilter but I will definitely try this method on a table runner. By the way I have always loved your fabric lines but now I think Beautiful Day is my fav.
You're so welcome! =) And thank you for your kind comments about Beautiful Day!
This is how I do my binding as well. I also find that using a stiletto gives me more control and accuracy. Also as mentioned before when joining strips I offset the overlap a little and you can see exactly the diagonal lines to the corners. And this also helps with the final join at the end making the binding fit perfectly.
It sounds like you have a great technique!
Thank you so much for the tutorial! It is very thorough, especially the part about needing to adjust your binding to match the loft of your batting. I generally just use what I have and really have no idea about the different types (something I want to learn more about). I generally make the same width of binding and now I’m seeing the advantages of going a bit narrower.
P.S. I think I may have heard your machine asking for a drop or two of oil. 😀
Batting does make a difference! I oil and clean after every 5 bobbins which keeps things running pretty smoothly but maybe she gets a little dry like I do in the winter. 😂
Excellent tutorial! Thorough, easy to understand, and I appreciate the extra tips included within each step.
Thank you!--I'm so glad that you found it helpful!
Thanks Your tutorials are excellent! Love your fabric lines too!
Thank you so much!
I also do my bindings like you do with the exception of using invisible thread when topstitching the binding (on the spool and in the bobbin), so if my sewing gets a little wonky on the front or the back, it really isn't noticeable. I use Sulky's 100% polyester invisible thread. CONGRATZ on getting your lovely quilts bound!
Oh sure!--invisible thread is a great suggestion! =)
I love this tutorial Corey!!! Thank you!!! You made it so clear and precise and I'm so glad you explained why we might have to adjust the binding width according to the batting loft of our quilts. I've been consistently using 2 1/2" bindings but sometimes they look uneven , now I realize I should be trying more narrow ones. Thank you, Thank you!!! So helpful!!!
You are so welcome!…I’m so glad you found it helpful. 😃❤️
me too 2 1/2 isn't working out and i couldn't figure out why , now we know !
I love your binding tutorial! Your quilts are beautiful, such quilting inspiration. I truly hope by now all your beautiful quilts have binding. I will be seaching for more of your tutorials.
Thank you Lisa!...yes, I did get those other quilts bound (along with many others!). =)
What an AWESOME tutorial...I've only done 1 binding so far and I'm hand sewing it. But, I know I'll have projects where I'll try the machine binding and I'll definitely save this for reference. I'm loving the Beautiful Day fabric collection. The Mystery BOM is SEW much fun! Thanks for all your videos and the great QAL!
Thank you!…and thank you for joining in on the mystery quilt along. It’s been so fun to share those blocks.
So many great tips, thank you! Love your designing and colors! I know things are different when filming, but incase you did not know…on your Juki, if you step on the heel of the foot control it will activate your thread cutter. Thanks again for your tutorial. I have several things I am going to try!
You're so welcome! I do know about the foot/thread cutter--I just never use it. I know a lot of people really like using it!
Thanks for the tutorial!! I’m going to try 2” because I get frustrated with the uneven-ness of the 2.5” binding strips.
Hope you bound those gorgeous quilts!! I’m working on easy peasy from your apricot and ash line 🤩 love it
2” made such a difference for me!
Yes I agree. Beautiful quilts! Getter er done 😅
Great information and the best explanation I’ve had for binding a quilt! Thanks so much!
Pat
I'm so glad you found it helpful Pat!...thank you!
Love the red one. Thank you! So very pretty!
I still go back and forth as to my favorite!
This is the best machine binding tutorial I've seen. Love your style of instruction!! I'm going to try 2" strips as well.
I’m so glad!…thank you so much!
Great job ❤this video so easy to follow along with you and so clearly seen your work .. thanks 😊
@@arlene9330 Thank you! I'm glad you found it helpful. =)
Thank you for the tutorial on binding. I’m still learning so this was super helpful.
I hope it helps stream line things for you!
I enjoyed your video! It was very well done. I am so excited that you showed the Beautifully Charming quilts. I just ordered all the fabric for the red version this morning! It's so beautiful.
Thank you so much!..I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
Great video! I’ll echo the others and say how much I appreciate you explaining WHY you like a 2 inch binding. It makes so much sense, will definitely try it!
Sometimes we do things because "that's the way it's always been done"...but maybe there is a way that might work better or a technique that would make things more simple. It's so nice to know those different options we might not have considered.
I could watch you all day. I love seeing all of your quilts. They are beautiful. Thanks for the helpful techniques!
That is so nice of you to say, thank you!
Thank you! I'm going to try the 2" - was always told 2 1/2 - I've been doing 2 1/4 with better luck - Definitely going to try the 2"! Looks great. I would have thought that would be too tight. LOVE LOVE LOVE this fabric line!!! Your quilt are beautiful, and again, thank you!
You’re so welcome!..Since going down to 2”, I’ve never going larger-I find that to work so well for me.

Love the Beautiful Day Red! Thanks for this video. I sew to front on machine, then hand on back. But I did do machine same way once. So now I have 3 quilts I need to bind, so gonna try your way :)
That's exactly the way I hand bind too...it's such a nice finish for a quilt.
This is the best machine-binding tutorial I’ve seen!!! Thanks! ☺️
I'm so glad you enjoyed it!--thank you so much for watching!
Love your quilts and did you get them all binded? I love the red colors!! Great tutorial I love how you explain things in detail as you show up a few times, this helps us beginners!! Thank you
I did get them bound!--thank you for asking!
Corey - love listening to you talk - so relatable. Great tutorial. I've finally got comfortable with my binding techniques and no longer dread the process. As you mentioned pillows are a great way to do that. Having said that, the tip about the binding width will be very useful going forward. Thank you so much!
Thank you!…I agree, practice makes so much difference as we perfect our techniques. It takes some time to get it just right. 😃
I always love a binding tutorial! This one was fabulous! I have been debating about going smaller in my binding width because I don't like the extra overhang I get. Now I know I can! And I thought it was only me having procrastination conversations with their teenager. 🤣 good to know I'm not alone.
Oh girl!...you are definitely not alone. My 16 year old has perfected the art. =)
That binding board!!! 😮 I’ve never pressed mine after attaching the binding. Definitely going to try that. Thank you Corey!!
Love the binding board! And yes!..try pressing after attaching…I was surprised what a difference it makes.
You’ve explained everything really well. Thank you! Did you finish binding the quilts?😄
I did…yay!! 🎉
Thank you for showing us your method of attaching bindings. You make it look so simple!
I too have a pile of quilted tops that need bindings, that seems to be the step I procrastinate on.🤦♀️
But I will ask….Have you gotten those bindings done? 😉
I am just as guilty of procrastinating on those bindings!…but yes!…I got them done! 😃
Fantastic!! That you finished!
Very informative and encouraging to see how you make binding a quilt doable! Thank you.
You are so welcome!
Clearest demo of this method I have seen. Thanks, Corey!
Glad it was helpful!--thank you!
Loved this binding tutorial. Soo helpful. I love how you just take your time and do the corners and they turn out soo perfect. I’m a very new at quilting. And so far I have used flannel in the middle of my projects. But I have started a sweetwater Christmas with red barn fabric. So hopefully by Christmas it will be finished. Lol. Thank you again for the tutorial. I will go back to it time and time again. And I also enjoy your east coast ish accent. 💟
Quilts with flannel in the middle are so cozy!
What a great demonstration! You are so patient. Thanku!
Thank you!-you're welcome!
Great tutorial that binding board looks fantastic. Even though I've been quilting many years, I didn't start machine binding until this year when I retired and started getting lots of UFO's done so your tutorial is so helpful. Thanks.
Machine binding speeds things up so much!
That quilt is beautiful. I go to your videos for inspiration and always feel reminded to take my time and be more precise.
Thank you so much Johanne! I really enjoy the precision of quilt making. =)
OMG, so much easier than figuring out
the binding tool. I'll keep coming back to this when doing my next binding. Thank you
You're so welcome!
Wow what a great tutorial, I learned so much thank you ☺️ I hope you were able to get your other quilt’s done it always feels good to finish 😀
I did--thank you! Thanks so much for watching!
Thank you for sharing your machine binding techniques and for showing the two Beautiful Charming quilts. I have the charm squares and the fabrics all prepped for the grey version. The red is cute but I’m excited to get going on the grey. I’m also doing your mystery quilt!
You're so welcome!--I still can't decide if I like the gray or the red quilt better! =)
Great tutorial! Thank you! I'm going to try this method on my next quilt. Hand binding is therapeutic but sometimes you just need it quickly.
I agree with you! It's so nice to be able to use either method.
Thanks for the video! I am new to quilting and struggle with the binding. I have watched many videos and I can’t wait to try it like this.
You're so welcome!
This is exactly the way I have been doing it…so validating to know that it is good for everyone!
I'm so glad that method works for you...it's such a time saver. =)
Oh my goodness!! A binding board!?! I love it... thank you for sharing, Corey!
It's so fun to use Stephanie! =)
I loved this tutorial. I have been quilting for years. I am glad to know other people start other quilts before the others are bound. Binding is my weak spot, probably because I always finish them by hand and it takes forever. Thank you for this video. I like the idea of machine sewing both sides.Yay!🥰🧵🪡🎉
Machine binding sure speeds things up! I’m still guilty of putting off getting that binding finished even so! 😂
So glad you did this video. Even after years of quilting I struggle w joining the binding and have to search tutorials every time. Yours is definitely saved as a fave.
I'm so glad it was helpful!
What a terrific tutorial! I've been binding from the back for years, but I've never seen anyone else do it. And thanks for the info on how to connect the strips at the end, that's been my worst problem. Thanks again.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it!...it's the easiest method I've used for machine binding. =)
I love hearing the enthusiasm in your voice! Thank you for sharing your tips, I picked up a few on this video from you.
I’m so glad it was helpful!…I do enjoy fabric and quilts! 😃
Thank you for your binding tutorial! I think joining the ends makes sense to me now. Hopefully no more getting twisted. I am also motivated to try smaller width binding. When I make my binding strips I like to use Doug Leko's Mino Simple Folded Corners ruler. I have the diagonal tape, but haven't tried it yet. I have started not pressing my binding in half before I attach. I just pin them in half. I sew it on. I haven't tried pressing after sewing one side on, so I will give that a try. I do use glue on the final side instead of clips. So many ways to do one thing!
You are right, there are so many ways to accomplish the same task! It's so nice we can each do what works best for us.
Thank you Corey for your tutorial on machine binding. I had looked at so many other tutorials for this method and it wasn't until I came to your site that I truly understood how to do this!! Your demonstrations and explanations were easy to view and follow. I thank you so much for this! Your quilts were all so beautiful!
You're very welcome!...I'm so glad you found it helpful Susan!
You have inspired me and gave my the confidence to get my first binding 😬 done!
Oh wonderful!
It looks so beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing!
You are so welcome!...thank you!
Thank you, thank you 😊 🤗 it warms me to know that a sewist/designer like you machine binds and says its perfectly fine. With your help, I might get some of my unfinished projects completed. BTW, I'm cuckoo over your fabrics 💖
Thank you so much! I definitely think it's fine to machine bind..actually for quilts that will get a lot of use, I think it might even be better. I think machine binding is a sturdier finish than finishing by hand. =) I hope you are able to get some of those UFO's completed. I was just sitting here mulling over the idea of a monthly UFO video here on my channel to motivate myself to finish up some of my own!
Wow! Wonderful technique Corey, thank you for these great tips 👌
My pleasure!
I bind all the time, and still learned so much watching you
I'm so happy--thank you!
Thank you for this!!! It was so helpful in finishing the second quilt I made. My corners aren’t perfect but with practice I know I’ll get it! Thank you for your video!!
I'm so glad it was helpful for you!
Thank you for a great tutorial - I found this really helpful and your tips for binding width and corners were so easy to understand for a first-timer :)
I'm so glad you found it helpful!
I’m venturing into machine binding. This was a very helpful tutorial. Thank you!!
I'm so glad you found it helpful!
Your tutorial was well done and easily understood! Thanks for your tips. Like you, I always iron my bindings before turning them down to sew. I had also changed from a 2.5 to a 2 1/4 binding and found I really liked it much better. However, I’m making a runner so I’m going to try the 2”! I also use clips!!
Thank so much and thank you for watching!...You'll have to see if you like the 2" or 2 1/4" better!
Thank you! Great instructions! I do mine this way but wider and from the front. I am going to do some from the back. Your comment about the thickness of the batting sure does make a difference. Thanks again.
You're so welcome! There are so many different ways we can approach our machine binding.
Thank you for this great tutorial. Watching the hands on made what I was reading really make sense. Gotta go my binding awaits
I'm so glad it was helpful!
I've been putting bindings on many quilts for other people for and they look professional, but I was blown away with your method - I'm a huge fan and can't wait to try it your way.
What a nice service to offer quilters...even though I don't mind binding and I'm pretty quick at it, it's still a task that I sometimes put off!
Love the colors of your quilt! I always machine bind but I do use a decorative stitch or have even used satin blanket binding with a zigzag stitch for a more casual quilt.
Thank you Wanda! That's a great suggestion to use a decorative stitch. =)
Thank you. I loved this binding tute. Glad I chose to watch yours as I will be binding my very First quilt. Am grateful for ALL the tips included.
You are so welcome! You might like watching some other tutorials as well. There are a number of different ways you can machine bind a quilt.
Thank you Corey for a great tutorial! I just did my first binding and it was so hard to do by hand. I learned from you what I was doing wrong and also now I know how to machine bind my quilts. Your a wonderful teacher. Thank you so much.
You're so welcome!--I'm so glad it was helpful!
Great tutorial! Thanks for sharing, and I hope you got those bindings done!
I did!--thank you!
I have struggled with machine binding, you gave me some good tips to try. Thanks!
Machine binding can be a little bit tricky…the right combo of things and practice will help. 😀
So helpful thank you and i hope you got the binding in the other 3 quilts have a beautiful day
I did!..you have a wonderful day as well!
FANTASTIC Tutorial. Your relaxed approach makes me feel more relaxed with the process. Very thorough, relatively simple with beautiful results. THANK YOU.
You're so welcome!...thank you so much for your kind words!
Your quilts are beautiful. Love the tutorial on binding. Am going to give it a try.
Thank you!
Another busy day for me getting things done and organized for Monday's filming. I so enjoy sitting with my hand quilting and watching your video! I hope you have an amazing day! Thanks for posting this video.
You are so welcome!
I’m not much of a quilter, but I have a quilted Advent calendar I’m making for my daughter and I needed this technique! Thank you for such a well done video.
Wonderful!--I'm so glad it is helpful for you!
I real enjoyed watching you and explaining each step you were doing , thank you ❤
You are so welcome!
