Due to human extirpation of predators that historically maintained populations of raccoons, nothing but human intervention keeps the population in check. Left to their own devices, raccoons would overpopulate and likely fall victim to diseases, such as distemper which can nearly wipe out the entire population. It seems crazy that reducing the population keeps the overall population more healthy, but that’s why the State of Iowa just recently changed laws to allow for such population control methods. Predators always play a key role in animal populations. Hope that helps explain why we hunt them.
