Making a pair of super tiny socks for a stuffed plushie, thank you so much for allowing me to make them look like real socks with a real heel and not just tubes! Also, I super recommend making tiny socks for a first time. Being so small, you can get through them very quick and it will help to build your confidence when you tackle the full sized project!
I'm making my first pair of socks following another pattern, but was having trouble visualizing the heel turn. Your explanation was super clear and really helped me to see what I needed to be looking for :) Thank you!
I would like to second that. I had a written pattern before I tried this website, and I couldn't understand what they meant about the "clusters of stitches" but this video made it much clearer and easier to understand.
Jana, After the 20th viewing I stopped counting! It works, I did it, wow! Incorporating the reinforcement was an excellent idea, it's so nice to feel a bit of cushion. The anchor for me was having the same amount of stitches on each side after the gap. My first sock has taken me 20 years, most of that time has been overcoming my fear. Thanks for being my guide in the journey.
This was incredibly helpful!! I'm knitting my first pair of socks from a written pattern and it's only my 4th knitting project to start with so I was so confused when the pattern was making me knit short rows without explaining why
You are so good at demonstrating how to knit socks! The way you phrase the techniques not only makes it very clear but makes it enjoyable to listen to you. Thank you so very much! I love the comment you made about the 'baby floats' in the previous video, step 3 the heel flap, haha!
I've knitted a few pairs of socks but always had a hard time identifying where the gap was. When you said that it was where you turned the work I instantly understood. Just to be sure when I turned my work I added a clip-on marker. Seemed like extra work but I had the heel done in no time at all. It was perfect. That made my day. It was so basic. I'm making a toddler sock but your instructions helped so much.
You are saving my life with these videos. I'm following a written pattern and it's not clear enough for someone who has never knit socks before. Thank you for the help!!
I’m on my 2nd sock and have lined up my slip stitches right this time on the heel turn! These socks are for me~next pair with size1needles and done right for a good friend!!! Thank You Jana😀
I cannot tell you how much this tutorial helped me knitting my first socks while following a pattern for the first tim as well. The visualization is perfect to grasp the basics of this technique!
I’ve knit a lot of socks but never with such clear and complete instructions. The written directions accompanying the video are just what I’ve been needing. Thank you so much for this support!
You have been indispensable as I knit my first pair of socks! I knit about one project a year and thus need uber instruction as I knit. The quality of your video is superb and lets me see exactly how to proceed! I'm still having trouble discerning the slip and knit stitches to remain in pattern, but who is going to look that closely at my heel within my shoe! LOL Thank you so much!
Light bulb moment! You always say, read your knitting, and I finally discovered that if I look at the purl side I could clearly see if an SSK or K2tog had been worked on the round before! Believe me, I am elated! Hope to eventually be able to “see” lots more! Thanks for your videos. I am understanding socks better with every try.
I've made a few pairs of socks, but always followed a pattern to the T. Now I know how to make the gusset and heal with any amount of stitches on . Thanks so much!
Just found you and I have learnt so much even after years of knitting socks ! I have only ever knitted a basic heel flap and have wanted to learn the shadow type you did in your last video. Next time ,I will follow your instructions slowly and try that heel. many thanks from Wales , uk.
I forgot to say that you were much easier to watch knitting. english style. I find continental knitting videos a bit distracting. I use dpns which are easier for me but your circulars did not affect the lesson !
Jana, this video is magic gold for me. Thanks so much for making it. I've watched it over and over as I'm almost ready to turn the heel and have deviated from the pattern. Knowing the formula helps so much!
Not just about this particular video but to thank you for all the videos, f/b group and tutorials. I just wanted to ask if there was a way of making a single small donation instead of patreon? I've so appreciated your customisable sock pattern (not an experienced knitter but started to go down the rabbit hole of socks!) and just wanted to thank you for that and the videos which explain so much.

Thank you for teaching me how to knit a sock :) I have knitted a few so far :) I am now knitting my first fair isle sock and it is going well :) I am up to the heel flap and I would like to know if it is possible and if u have an instructional video on it....if I can make my heel flap in alternating vertical lines using the sl1, k1 etc...I want blk and wt lines thank you
I don't have a video specifically on that, but sure, you could definitely alternate colors. You wouldn't even need to slip any of the stitches because you're already carrying a float behind your work by alternating colors. The float is what creates the extra padding and reinforcement. Happy Knitting!
Because of my pattern I have an odd number on the side I am putting the heel on...31...how would you work this? Thank you for this, I have enjoyed following this...usually I make toe-up socks and have liked learning a new way to make socks
I did it...I added my extra odd stitch as the part of your knit 5 instead I had 6 and everything else fell in place...my heel looks great...ready for the next step...GREAT TEACHING
I had a restless night and had tossed and turned for 2 hours. Just as I was almost ready to drop off to sleep, my voice yelled in my head 'Linda, you didn't turn the heel!' Instantly awake, I thought darn...I didn't. I was half way through the foot part! Watching too much tv as I was knitting, I guess. But really...I couldn't have thought this much much earlier 😭
For a very narrow heel, can I sl 1 P3 P2 tog P1 and then turn? Asked another way. if I only purl 3 instead of your 5 stitches, how does that affect the rest of the sock? In your example, you knit half (18) PLUS 2. If I shorten Sl 1 P5 P2tog to Sl P3 P2tog, does anything else change?

I'm not sure what i'm doing wrong. I'm using a different number of stitches, and I keep ending up with a gap before the last stitch on each side that i have to ssk/p2g to close, but then there's no additional stitch after that to purl or knit into the back of
that's totally ok. As you've noticed, depending upon your stitch count, you may or may not have a stitch left over to knit or purl at the end. Just close the gap with your decrease, turn your work and carry on!
hi Jana, after turning the heel how many stitches do i have to have if i cast on 72 stitches......half of that is 36, half of that would be 18+2 =20......so will i keep decreasing until i have 18 sts or leave it at 20 sts? Thank you ever so much for these tutorials, they helped me so so much. knitting presently my 1st sock :P Thanks for your help :)
You'll keep doing the short rows, turning the heel until you're finished closing up the gaps on each side. You should have 20 stitches across the heel, if you haven't missed any. Does that make sense?
Can’t wait to start this! I’m a little confused about identifying the knits & slips. The “sunken” row is the knit & the raise one is the slip? Is that right? I don’t want to screw that up. Thanks in advance. Great video! ♥️
Hi, as a left handed knitter, people are saying that I should do a k2tog instead of an ssk, whenever I see one in the pattern. Also they say I should do an ssk in place of a k2tog. Is that correct? Thank you for the wonderful videos!! I love your channel!!
I'm a little confused what to do when there's only one stitch left on either side of the gap. I know you talked about it but since that is normally the stitch you would use for the ssk or p2tog, do you do that and forgo the normal row ending knit or purl? Or do you back up the ssk or p2tog by one stitch (stopping two sts before the gap) so you can still get in the ending knit or purl on the last stitch ? For this question I'm also assuming normal stockinette for the heel turn cause I'm not sure I'm ready to tackle it in eye of partridge.
Great video. So when you said "wear point", my brain translated it to were-point, then I went downhill and remembered Young Frankenstein: Inga: Werewolf!! Dr. F: Werewolf? Igor: There. Dr. F: What? Igor: There wolf. There castle. Dr. F: Why are you talking like that? Igor: I thought you wanted to 🤣
This was super helpful! Quick question, though. I'm knitting a sock magic loop with 18 stitches on each side. Will this method still work if I follow the same guidelines? Slip 1pw, knit half + 2, ssk, k1, turn; and then slip 1pw, and purl 5? Or should I adjust the number I'm working on each needle to account for the fact that I have fewer stitches? Thank you!
are you supposed to end up with the same number of stitches you started with? I never seem to. I started out with 16 and ended up with 18. I think I am following your excellent instructions, so I am curious.
Turning the heel. 64 sts ,m, so 32 for the heel. After I turned the heel, did all the decreases, I was left with 18. The last decrease on both sides was ssk/p2tog, whereas you had a single st left after your last decrease (I think). So maybe I am doing something wrong. BTW, I love having an “action” round and a plain round! Makes it so easy to keep track.
I’m having trouble here: my starting number of stts is 33 (1/2 of 66). Center point = ? +2. I chose 17 (1/2 of 34). So, no matter what, I’m uneven. Is this a problem?
A long time ago, in I believe English knitter guilds, women were considered not smart enough to turn the heel and had to give up the job to the knitting master until the heel and gusset are finished and I believe also to close off. It's weird the things people made up to make others feel inferior...
This was great until somewhere around the 4th row when you get fast and sloppy. Your fingers obscure your work and aren't coordinated with what you are rushing to say, and then you've got that yarn over which confused me, and I hesitated, and by that time I had lost my place inthe instructions and now I have NO idea where to pick up. I will try to refer to the directions that you've posted and if that doesn't work I might have to watch the video all over again to see where I got left in the dust. I'm sure if I was an expert knitter, I would be so thrown off at this point, but I wonder if you only want experts watching your videos? I'm not going to give up, though. I hope I can catch up. @@PurlTogether No. But I should have. By the time I stopped thinking about it, I could have fixed it.
Is the goal to move the gap to near the end of the needle? Is that how the yarn ends up at the end of the needle when the heel is done?
Yep

It would be better to have an even number to that your heel will be symmetrical from side to side.
It's not just confusing - it's a bad case of overthinking.
