INFO: In this video i thought i’d do a breakdown of Josh Homme’s guitar playing. First i thought i’d play through a selection of the most iconic Josh Homme riffs that comes to my mind. Then i’ll break these songs down into a set of scales to get a better understanding of his unique melodies. We’ll later take a look at the individual playing techniques that Homme’s using, his approach to picking and experimenting with various genres and finally what effects he’s using.

Glad you mentioned Kyuss a few times, such an important part of Josh's musical journey .
Indeed. How could i not. Thanks for watching btw.
@@LieLikesMusic he was actually the big influence on kyuss..
I still listen to Kyuss on the reg
Some would argue the most important. To this day nobody can replicate that, Kyuss was something truly unique and ahead of its time.
Scales 3:11
Techniques 8:16
Genres 14:50
Effects 16:55
Playing these songs in standard tuning actually complicates things even more. Josh plays things a bit more simple than it may seem, if you use the C tuning, especially in the first 3 albums.
He has such a weirdly dissonant sound that it’s instantly recognizable
It honestly just sounds like a bunch of incoherent sounds when he plays the songs with just guitar.
its not dissonant, your are just not use to this kind of sound
A lot of that I think is the tuning and might be coming from playing that tuning on a normal sized neck aswell
@@Wohodix that's what dissonance is
I really like how you show the guitar "upside down" as if you were looking from the player's point of view. Makes it so much easier to understand!
Koen Wieringa Thanks for the feedback! I'm glad it made more sense. Not a lot of guitar youtubers do this, but i thought i'd prioritize practicality for once. Cheers
Yes a first, and welcome too.
Just like guitar tablature
How To Play Like Josh Homme
?
Step 1: Sell your soul to the devil
Bollocks! The music is loaded with soul. Think about it. Or listen to Tool, sounds great, kinda hits the spot but lacking something, that's when the music's souled out.
Littlewing6was9 Tool’s new album is full of soul.
His guitar is upside down .
WORD!
My mom sold my soul to rock n roll before I was born.
And I thank her.
I can tell you’re a Josh Homme fan because of all the videos you’ve made of him...
I’m also a huge fan of Homme so I love your videos!
As a long time Qotsa fan, thank you for the effort on this great video! Now i just need to learn how to play the guitar lol
Haha, well all great guitar journeys starts with a single note.
I've been waiting for this! Excited
This should be part of a different channel if you're looking to dip more in this direction. LieLikesGuitar. More views and ad revenue that way if you build it up.
Well the content i posted before was highly exposed for copyright claims. That's why i'm making this switch. Plus this video alone took me a whole week to make. If i had a team of people, i think things would be different.
@@LieLikesMusic I can absolutely imagine that it took a long time. You went full-on mad scientist and did a study on what notes were most used. It made me think of where else those patterns can be looked into 🤔
@@XBL4K3X Yeah it sure did. And that's an interesting question. I'm a big time fan of Qotsa and Homme so i'd be happy to make more videos on the topic. Btw if you'd consider supporting me on Patreon, that gives me a lot more resources to play with. If you don't want to, that's fine off course www.patreon.com/lielikesmusic
just so you know, tapping wasn't invented by metal guitarists...i remember seeing dudes from at least the 1950's in black and white tapping on acoustic
Yes someone else mentioned that in a previous comment. I appreciate the information!
I appreciate you going super nerdy on this wonderful breakdown of Josh Homme's most iconic riffs. Seeing styles of other guitar players is helping me better understand my own style, riff and song composing approach. Thank you.
Man, this video is so inspiring. I think Josh is such an innovator in terms of blending genres, techniques and sounds from his guitar and you brought out front. Thank you for sharing that magic. ✌🏻
This is a cool format. You should do more of these!
Do one of Stu and Joey from King Gizzard
Im not usually snobby about this stuff but I really wish you had shouted out Matt Sweeney's Guitar Moves video with Josh since it's glaringly obvious that you got half of the info for this video from that one. Also you've really gotta pay respects to Joe Shit the Ragman and Gravel Gurty for Josh's playing style.
Boom doo weedoowee dafurdy hur da hurnyhay....
Pocket Picker I can’t stop laughing
Ohhh did i just shock you?! Did you just shock me?! Weird...
Too much distortion, Troy always says it's not that saturated as one thinks.
are you serious? did you hear gardenia at the start lol. It's probably right for later queens stuff but he definitely rolled it back for demo purposes
Maybe the examples on this video are not as saturated as you think.
AttakaiMusic needed way more gain lmao
For early stuff, there's a lot of gain, but not so much recently. New stuff is actually pretty clean. His tone in general has changed a lot, compared to when QotSA started.. Guess you could say it's "matured" a bit.
I wish SFTD had the amount of distorion than people say. You can hear the transition Homme did on his tone from self-titled to Rated R. Just crank it up, let his Ampeg saturate and control with EQ. And the rest is just for colouring, like PDF or the Ultimate Octave.
Good job man! Love his style, it’s recognizable instantly. Cheers!
Aw man dude this was EXACTLY what I was looking for tonight will sub!
Fantastic, super well made video. Thanks dude.
Love this channel, keep it up man
I have been waiting for a video like this about Josh. Thx
No probs my friend. More desert rock related guitar videos coming your way.
great playing, I love your technique!
I was just looking up some similar videos about Josh Homme, didn't know you played guitar, so glad.
My fave scandis in one video! Informative and fun as ever mate, thanks for uploading 😁
Thanks mate!
Great video, kudos, waiting for more!
Fantastic video! Thanks for posting!
Nice video, nice editing, great work behind It, good job
You need some more Mid in your EQ. They crank that up especially in songs for deaf
Nice video, man! Josh has the coolest phrasing and the best tone. 👍
Hey man I love your videos and I can see that you are trying new stuff. Keep going and have fun!
Momchil Georgiev Thanks. Sure will. Thanks for staying tuned on the journey
Momchil Georgiev Sure will. Thanks for staying tuned on the journey
Very unique and fresh approach to teaching guitar. Nice job. 🙌🎸🐕
For the Doggies Guitars Hey man. Thanks for the love.
"Desert Wizard"
Hold up I get this reference! It's Joshua Homme!
Lie, I don't even have a guitar but I've enjoy this video like a baby.
You're the best man!! Keep it up!!!
Great analysis🤘
No problem. Check out my Instagram page @ christianhaugliee for more qotsa guitar stuff. Have a great week.
That's a dope shirt ngl.
Nice work man
Outstanding video! I never watch guitar videos because I don't know how to play but yours really got me hooked. Excellent job!
Cool thanks for the positive feedback. There's more guitar to come. What got you so hooked btw?
@@LieLikesMusic Every time you played you gave clear examples of songs with that play style and played them for a bit. That was probably what got me hooked :)
lit video bro! thanks so much!
This is amazing. Thank u
I'm pretty impressed u were able to play all those riffs in standard
Great video, the scale analysis was spot on . I'd make one small change to the power cord with the added note: remove the octave note. That is a signature of his and I use it liberally myself thanks to him haha
Oh that's true. He mentioned that in the guitar moves video. Don't know how i didn't see that. Cheers for helping out ;)
@@LieLikesMusic I love that guitar moves video, great to just see someone like Josh talk about his playing it such a candid way. Need to find some polka tabs haha
You mean like a 7th chord?
@@RexVergstrong same hand shape but muting the 7th usually. He then uses his pinky to add notes on the higher strings. Check out the guitar moves video he explains it well
@@jackington1994 like on the riff of No One Knows?
A video that I would have loved to have heard a decade ago. But I'm so glad that I'm hearing now
Cool i'm glad you like it man.
Ha, this so true. I’m such a josh Homme nerd I went out of my way to learn all this. But this is probably one of the best synopsis of Hommes’ playing that I’ve seen. Amazing job.
@@ebanizalex Thanks dude! Btw if i could provide you with tabs for any Josh Homme related project, what album (song) would it be?
This... this is awesome! Well done!
Thanks Justin. If i could provide you with tabs for any Josh Homme related project, what album (songs) would you pick?
That’s tough all his projects are awesome, Era Vulgaris would have to be my pick. Turning on the screw for sure. I know the rhythm part but I wanna know that solo, it sounds so wrong but oh so right! Cheers man! Keep up the great content!
Great subject my hermano, hope to see more Homme videos maybe next video could be of he's lyrics, would be awesome.
great video guys
Desert session 11/12 ...can't await.
Me neither actually hehe. Btw, if i could provide you with tabs from any Josh Homme related project and song, what would you pick?
Very kind of you, but I only played drums...for years.
@@LieLikesMusic reptiles please
@@LieLikesMusic Regular John, The Sky is Fallin',Make It Wit Chu,Smooth Sailing,The Evil Has Landed. :-)
It’s almost as if he was courting in a cabaret, like “how do you do?”
Daniel Yeverino yeah I saw that video too.
Quick shout out to Matt Sweeney, spokesperson for the benefits of silence.
Daniel Yeverino Matt is a legend too. You should look up guitar moves with the Black Keys guitarist. So funny 😂
@@LieLikesMusic I knooooowww, I love the one with Billy Gibbons. He's such a fan and I love that as a fan.
Next time use quotation marks.
Very interesting video displaying the difference between insanity and passion & logic and precision
Havent watched fully but im sure its hella kool. Keep theese comming lie. - brokunas really loved the unique camera angle and edits
Yea i know you're a guitarist. So what do you actually think of the angle? Can it help you learn the licks even faster? Or is it just too different?
@@LieLikesMusic its quite helpful. I havent seen this angle anywhere used. Well its really easier if ur holding a guitar in the hand because you have the correct angle and its perfect for beginners
@@raykin8633 Exactly my thoughts too. It's the view you have when you look down at your guitar yourself.
@@LieLikesMusic yes this view will make it so easy to learn. When i was learning i always used to mess up the chords and this view will make is soo helpful. Looking forward for more
I'm a simple man. I see Josh Homme I click
Excellent video!! Probably the greatest video of your channel :)
Woah that's quite a compliment. Thanks!
I am kinda afraid of your channel cuz whenever i get to know an artist u put out a video bout them. Like i just got to know Josh Homme bout an hour ago and here u r! This happened several times before too.
Btw love your content.
Damn that's such a cool coincidence. I've had a few other people say this too. My guess is that you've searched for Josh Homme on youtuber earlier. So RUclips suggests more of that content y'know. I'll do a lot more content about Queens and other desert rock bands. So stay tuned if you wanna learn more dude. Cheers!
@@LieLikesMusic You Read minds Lie........................................ and it's Cool
RUclips was invented for you that's why, enjoy. Yout life's about to get a whole lot brighter now Josh has made an appearance
My playin is never gonna be the same again after this.
Just go like this: *moves hand up and down and hums A Song for the Dead*
I'm fairly certain the double bend wasn't created by Hendrix because I've heard similar bends used in Robert Johnson's music. Other than that, this was an incredibly well done video.
I used to have an Epiphone les paul I really loved that guitar.
Lovely t-shirt!!
Mariana Almeida Thanks. I got it from the guys that made the Desert Age documentary.
Nice vid 👌
Thank you very much for this video! I have a short question. Would you tell me the title of the book you used in your video? That would be great! :)
Josh has really nice taste in guitars.
Can you do a video about Nick Cave? Would love to you cover this subject and he's such a mysterious guy
This.
C F A# D# Deep and Dirty. Quite Delicious. Nice playing my friend, is there no end to your talents
Tapping was happening way back. Steve Hackett did it on "Return Of The Giant Hogweed"
great video, I'm a huge fan of josh's playing style and it's rad to see you break it all down but that version of gardenia was wimpy as hell
Nice video! I read that the tapping technic comes from the Italian tradition of mandolin music (Abruzzo’s traditional folk music)
I would def also suggest parametric distortion but this is pretty well known. The stone dead pdf is that qotsa sound in basically one pedal. I have one now it’s it’s my absolute favorite pedal you can actually do so much with it for a overdrive or dirt pedal. The sustain is awesome
Neat scales
Really interesting to improvise with for sure
I was hoping you'd throw in the solo from "Writhe" by Kyuss. Bummer. His best solo.
That's a great song! My personal favorite solo by him has to be from The Bronze though
Hey L.L.M.! Long time watcher, big fan. Just a quality of life note, the upside down guitar visuals are very jarring. I understand it’s to match with your diagrams, but it’s just way more natural to see it upright positioned. Love this vid, btw!
hell yeah
;)
Nice video. You'll find an example of 'The Single Tap' at the very last note of the solo on 'Burn the Witch' 👌
Yes please
Also it’s 5:30 in the morning here
@@Marly345 Lol good way to start the morning eh?
i hear 'Manic Depression'
Are you sure about the powerchord thing? In guitar moves he mentions that he never learned to hold them properly like that, and that he always used 3 fingers
I play guitar and I like this
in 1:38 it says songs for the dead but the album is named songs for the deaf, just thought id point that out
Hey, great video, could you do a video teaching how to play like Troy Van Leeuwen?
Sick t-shirt! Where did you get this?
How do you hold your pick?
9:51 dude its a normal chord
You should do "how Jamie Rhoden plays guitar" next!
Gaussia agreed
@@davidsnedden6849 yessir
congrats your'e a certified josh homme groupie
How do I tune my guitar like Josh Homme?
I never knew that you were such an talented guitarist! Could you do this with some Jimmy Page riffs.
Tapping was invented by Van Halen, that´s what i´ve heard ;) Cheers and thank you for this brilliant video!
Can we have this style video for Jack White too ?
It's weird, that
almost none of the people of the English-speaking world can't pronounce Josh's last name correctly.
His last name has a French origin and pronounces like "Omm", which means human or man, sorry for my English. ))
Please Make a Mike Kerr understanding or something ♥️!
Hey man, are you using a Catalinbread SFT pedal??? That's the real old school Josh's signature sound!
The amount of EQ-Mid boost they had in songs for the dead is kind of ridiculous. But it’s the tone of that album. For any interested in other tone options for pedals, Stone Deafs PDF or Catalinabreads SFT are good ones.
What's that after how to handle a rope? I couldn't catch it
Josh homie
great video! btw what book is this ? min 15:06
You have a crush on Josh Homme
isaac lopez Maybe
@@LieLikesMusic I certainly do.
In the thumbnail he looks like that thing from what was it " Pan's Labyrinth " I think that's the name of the movie.
B00STed Yeah that's a great movie actually
@@LieLikesMusic haven't seen it in awhile also gave you seen Labyrinth with David Bowie it's a I think 80s movie
please dont invert the image it complicates instead of simplificating :) thank you for all your videos youre awesome
How do you already have a Desert Sessions copy?
I have some connections
@@LieLikesMusic haha well that's obvious
@@diaperwiper Lol yeah. They'd rather have me not talk about them. So i choose to respect that.
That's a sweet ass shirt!!!
